[Q] SD-card issue

I bought a new Sandisk Micro SDHC 32GB UHS1 to increase a write/read speed to/from sd-card. But the problem is the sd-card steadily unmounted when I listen to the music or watch the movies. I think it‘s because of the class of the sd-card.
Can anyone confirm that this doesn‘t happen with the other class of the sd-card (with the same capacity of 32GB)?
I‘ll be very grateful for this.

I have a 32gb class 4 SanDisk MicroSD HC card, and I've actually never had any card issues at all, ie unmounting, corrupting, or anything weird. I've seen higher class 32gb cards, but I know how rare it is to have a microSD that doesn't ever give you any problems, so I'm sticking with my slower class 4 that has never let me down since I started using it about 5 months ago.

Well, I found the problem. Our devices are compatible only with microSD cards that have 2.0 interface like classes 2-10. UHS1 cards have a new 3.01 interface, therefore our devices don‘t support the new interface.

It's supposed to be backward compatible, but I guess things don't always work how they are supposed to.

I agree. With my Sandisk 32gb (Class 4), I formatted it as FAT32 with 64kb clusters from a card-reader on my PC.
I had unmounting issues as well, but I believe I incorrectly disabled something when I was debloating my Nitro...Once I started using CM9 though, the unmounting issues went away.
* If your Nitro is stock, then I would suggest trying to format your card from a PC and trying again.
* If you're rooted, stock rom and did some debloating yourself...Try getting your phone back to stock and see if you still have issues
* If you're rooted and would like to try a new ROM, definitely try CM9, that will take care of the bloat and potentially the unmounting issues.

Hmmmm I just bought a UHS-1 card, haven't opened it yet. Is this phone for sure unable to take advantage of it?

Try heading to http://www.sdcard.org and download the SD Card formatter. Format the card and see if it makes a difference (Needs to be done from a Laptop/PC). I know I had to do this with one of my external SD Cards and it started working again, but I did not have the same problem as you.

32GB or 64GB MicroSD cards for Galaxy S3

I picked up samsung galaxy s3 today and looking for a good sd card. i am considering these two options:
SanDisk Ultra 64 GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card 30MB/s with Adapter SDSDQUA-064G-U46A
and another by Samsung
Samsung 32GB High Speed MicroSDHC Memory Card
samsung one seems like a good deal, compared to pricey sandisk.

64gb because it has exFat format 4gb+ file won't be a problem. I have got the same one.

I bought mine from amazon a few months ago and costed me 78$ $54 Class 10 64GB Micro SD
You should get a 64gb card, because you will have a lot of space for yout stuff and you can format it as exFat!

No issues with it formatted at exFat? I know someone else with a S3 had issues and had to format it to FAT32.

64gb because MOAR IS BETTER! I formatted mine to FAT32 because from what I've read and experienced with my other devices, it's just safer that way. I've had issues right off the bat using exFAT on some devices (mostly Samsung) or gradually the card will become corrupted (I've lost about 3 full microsd cards full of data so far). From what I've read this is due to Samsung using a half baked implementation of exFAT. exFAT is a patent-pending, proprietary file system created by Microsoft, so if Samsung, or any other OEM wanted to use the full implementation they would have to pay licensing fees. So while you can format it to exFAT using a PC, the way Samsung devices handle it there is high chance of it getting corrupted.

How do you format with FAT32? Just using format option in Samsung S 3?
I've been experiencing problem where from time to time, it just corrupt and give me SD card error, and refuse to mount it. I have a 64GB Sandisk Micro SD on Verizon S 3.

I used my laptop's built in SD reader that supports XC cards and just formatted to FAT32. You can use any PC program that formats. I personally used an app called guiformat (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm). It's a simple app specifically to format stuff to FAT32. I've heard you can simply use the window's formatter but I've also read of some people that had issues with that.

I've personally been using Class 10s for my devices and haven't had any issues as long as it's formatted in FAT32.

The difference between the sdhc cards and the sdxc cards is that the xc are intended to be used on usb3 systems so that they can take advantage of the speed. This is important when you are loading the card with your music library or unloading it with your photos. (and you don't do it mounted inside the phone.)
A Sandisk 64GB sdxc class ten card won't get the 30mb read speed advertised. It gets regular class 10 speed, the gs3 has no speed improvements when using this type of mcard. Here's a speed test in the phone of the Sandisk 64GB sdxc I got the other day.
IME, exfat is sensitive to power level change and anything that stalls or disrupts any read/write operation. However, if the phone says that it is damaged, just put it in to your adapter and a pc with exfat support and run chkdsk /f (with the fix options selected).

Hi. I'm getting the SanDisk 64gb class 10 tomorrow. So formatting it using the phone will make it FAT32? As previously mentioned in the thread it isn't worth formatting to exFAT, right?

The default system as far as I know in SGS3 is exfat. Use a free downloadable tool by name mini tools and format the card to fat 32. I have a 64 GB micro sd class 10 sandisk. I have no problems using it . My 32 gb card was running out of space because of music files If you are getting a new card you can do a surface test with the tool i mentioned above so that you know whether it has any defective sectors. It does take some time though.

This is correct, it formats exfat on the 64Gb. I did this yesterday and using myTerminal app, the mount command shows that the card is formatted exfat.
Now, it's an interesting thing, exfat is a licensed format, and Samsung paid for a license, however anyone with a rooted phone has some sort of Busybox installed which replaces most of the exfat commands with Linux standard ones.... is this better or worse?
I have a question for the people who have formatted fat32, how big is the space on the 64Gb? on exfat it's 59.47Gb what's yours?

Thanks for the reply guys. As I'll be using files bigger than 4gb exFAT would be the best choice. I've read in some threads though that this file system corrupts in the s3 over time, she was the card fills up. I don't know if this is true since it was only mentioned thrice in 3 different posts. Can anyone verify this?

My old 32gb is mostly standard stuff that I keep from phone to phone (like contacts backups music). So I have a copy on my desktop. Anyway, I had 29Gb filled on the card as a normal condition with Nandroid backups and TI backups.
When I was transferring this to the new 64Gb card, I was trying to use a 4 port USB OTG with the old card in the USB stick adapter. I fumbled with the power supply to the 4port and the phone didn't like it and unmounted the card, and wouldn't mount it again. I put it into my desktop with an adapter (on XP you need a patch for exfat from MS) and ran a chkdsk /f on it (took some time as I don't have USB3). The chkdsk finished (I made a backup to the desktop since some of the nandroid was new.) and put the card back into the phone. It worked for a few hours, I was listening to music on the card. The battery ran low, and I shut down to swap batteries and the card wouldn't mount again and claimed damaged and needed a format. Since I had everything backed up (and still had the old card, too), I just formatted it in the phone. Used the OTG to get the data back on from the old card. Everything's been good since 30+ hours without turning the phone off. But as I write this, I swapped batteries (full shutdown) and when I rebooted, the card wouldn't mount (and doesn't say that it's corrupted).
It also takes more than a minute (maybe two or so) to mount the card when the phone boots. This also makes it totally unusable for applications being stored on it or data for applications on it or for swapping apps like App2SD where it links the external card to the internal card and visa versa. If the app tried to access data on the card while it's being checked, it may not have the code to support the error returned. If the app needs to be running at bootup, few are going to wait until the card is ready, and the os will query for the card. I know that this was a problem on GB, and is one of the reasons so many oems are including more very fast internal storage in the phones.

Thanks guys. I would probably try exfat and see it works... FAT32 is always an option!

Just got my card an hour ago. Right out of the box I tried copying a bunch of files and I encountered an error. Reformatted it using windows and now it runs fine. So I guess it would be best to format it again and not use it right out of the box.

I put the card into a windows box without problems, could read the data, etc. Ran a chkdisk /f to find and fix any errors, no problems. Tried to put it back into the phone and it still wouldn't mount. Gonna give Samsung a call since it works in Windows, it either Samsung or Busybox that's the issue.

I ran a chkdsk /f again, no errors. Then I downloaded the sdformatter from the sdcard working group. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/ this is a free formating program that will make sure you have formated to the sdcard org standards. You can not choose the file system. You can choose to do different types of erase as a part of the format.
Anyway, after the chkdisk, I tried to mount the card but it would not. I then made another backup of the data, and did a long format (exfat) with a simple erase rather than the zeroes erase. Copying the data back and lo and behold it mounted. My phone though hasn't been off since though. Since I don't have usb 3 the formatting and data transfers take hours to complete. I am going to have to get a usb3 card for at least one pc and a usb3 card reader.
Samsung was not any help and wanted me to do a factory reset.

I bought my first tablet - Galaxy Note 10.1, 16g, a week ago. Latest updates to 4.1.2. I have searched the net, watched video's, read till I'm blind, called Samsung(No Help There), and walked away totally frustrated more than once. All the tech stuff about Class #,(4 verses 6 or 10) type, Samsung verses Sandisk, exfat, HC, HCCX, HCl, on & on.. It would all be fine IF there was a general favorite.
I want to buy the best functioning, best peformance micro 32 g sd card for general all around enjoyment the Note will best utilize.
Please, please suggest the best 32g sd card for the Note. Please be specific with brand, class, and type. I have learned so much from you folks. I am glad I found this site for most all my concerns. Well, to keeo it short and sweet. First off, some have gotten it to accept a 64gb card but with a certain formatting and process to go through.
In my experience, I got this 32gb card for 22.00 on sale at a local wholesaler. It was accepted by the n8013 without any difficulty.
Sandisk worked for me.

It really doesn't matter as far as class goes and the tab does take up to a 64gb card easy enough. I just bought a SanDisk 64gb Class 10 card off NewEgg for $54.99 on their Shell Shocker deal of the day thing. You just pop the card in, go to settings, storage, scroll down to SD Card and format SD card. Basically it's just a FAT32 format, but whatever...
Anyway, that's it. After that you are all set to use it.

I also have a SanDisk 64gb Class 10. The class doesn't make a difference, all current cards will perform the same. You won't notice a performance difference on the Note. You just need to format to fat 32, as the other poster suggested. I would also buy from a reputable seller because there are a lot of knock offs with fake labeling on them. I got mine from Best Buy for $56. The 32 gb was around half the price.
A lot of people go with Sandisk because of reliability and price.

i have sandisk 64gb class 10 bout it from ebay £42 and converted it to iternal memory thanks to zedomax hack i have 64gb iternal memory

Ok Folks, I can not thank you enough for your time and advice. But I will anyway, Thank You ALL for responding. :good:
New Egg jumped back up to $80 and Amazon was $65 and then sold out while I was checking a few things..... So I ordered the Sandisk 64g HDXC SDSDQUA-064G-U46A. I just hope it works when I put it in the Note. I may be back for help if it is not as simple as you say. Then if it is, I hope I can intall APPS on it with out restrictions to space and all will be Dandy, right?
After a week of trying to find a case-Moko Slim fit, sd/usb/micro usb adaptor-JUICED Systems GT401-01, screen protector-ClearPleax, and now micro SD card, I am exhausted! Still need one of those mini keyboards, but need to decide if rf or bt is the way to go. Now I just need to learn how to use all the neat stuff on Note...I think I will be ready to use it for work..& fun. Thanks Again.

Hey Jerry,
You only get notified if you subscribe to the thread (in response to your PM). Anyway, as I said, the formatting the Note uses for MicroSD is FAT32. You don't need to turn it off to insert the SD, but when you eject it, you would want to go into setting, storage, and unmount SD card.
You don't need partitions, but because it's FAT32, you are limited to 2GB or smaller files.
Anyway, that should answer the SD questions.
As for the keyboard, I have the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android. Works very well, comes with a tablet stand sorta built in the case, and it's full sized, so typing on it rocks. Costs $70-80 though.

From what I understand, you cannot install and run Apps from your SD card...

According to another poster here 'From what I understand, you cannot install and run Apps from your SD card...' I know some apps may not be willing to load from an extrernal card for some vendor reason, but that is the exception, is'nt it? For the most part, we can load, install and use apps with the 64gb card we ordered right? I know I have held off loading apps because I want them on the ext sd.

I have had the same success with three gt-n8013 notes. Its a complete falsity that the 64gb class 10 san disks need to be formatted to work. Plug and play.

Class 10 has faster data transfer speeds way worth the extra $6-8.

had a SanDisk 16GB and it went sour. never bought one tho somehow got them all for free
edit: they did replace it for free also, but I lost all my data on a so called reliable card

Got it today. worked without doing anything. 59.4g. How can I confirm the format is FAT32 or exFAT? I have read that it can be either?

sd card issues

Hi guys,
Fairly new to the tab s got one just over a wek ago, since have been having issues with anys sd card i put in it.
Firstly i used a scan disk 32gb class 10
, it worked ok but would randomly dissapear, and seemed to have issues withplaying 2k videos, eg being choppy
So i thought i would upgraxe to a 64gb samsung evo class 10 card, been having nothging but issues since .
first i put loads on it then my tablet wouldnt read it at all. I then formatted it to ex fat via windows , same issue .
i then formatted in the tabelt it self. Now it works for about 5 mins then it will show as nothing in there
in storage settings says it mounted and show the correct memory but when trying to use it via various apps
as empty .
Both cards work fine jn windows, and have been brought from officisl websites hence arent fake
Anyone have any idea
Im trying to hold off routing so i can use banking apps , but if that lets me axtually use it !

You could try a factory reset on the tablet to see if that helps. If it doesn't work, then you'll need to exchange the tablet and do a factory reset anyways, so it won't hurt to try that first. I'm using the same samsung card you mention and it's working fine.

how do you have it formatted? exfat
It now tells me the sd card is blank or not formatted , just changes every time i turn it on!

I just left it how it came, exFAT.

Android doesn't support exfat- it's a Microsoft format for the most part. Format it as fat32 and it will work. These large size microSDXC cards are coming formatted exfat (which was designed for flash devices in mind) but isn't really supported well.

I just got a 64GB flash drive and played with formats to see if I could use exfat or f2fs but nope. Fat32

I don't think that's entirely true. Some android devices don't support exFAT, but from my experience most do these days. I'm currently using an exFAT card on my Tab S.

ok so i tried exfat and fat32 and both did similar things.
I then tried the same cards inside my microusb to micro sd adapter and they worked fine!
So i took it back to John Lewis, spoke to their technical support who didnt know a fat lot, they kept telling me this tablet
doesnt support that type of media, i then showed them it did by using the microusb adapter, we then tried it in the display unit and worked fine, they werent understanding that sometimes it works in my device and
others it wont.
They kept advising me not to just swop it as the samsung tab s wouldnt do what i wanted it to do (i knew it would) they eventually agreed to give me a full refund, so i did and just swopped it for a nexus 9 as i was torn up between getting the
2 when i brought the tab s.
Short story - i swopped my tab s for nexus 9, happy with it so far compared to the tab s.
Also means i have some tab s cases going space if anyone fancies buying them off me for dirt cheap, got the official case, and cheapo one and some extremeguard protectors etc... drop me a message if your interested. (in the uk )

I'm having the same problem with my SM-T807T. Using an 64GB SanDisk formatted FAT32. I had it my nook before and it was fine (works on windows as well as my phone) but randomly stops working in the Tab S.

Sounds like the tab s struggles with certain types of sd cards mabye?
do you have a micro usb to micro sd adapter to test it on like i did? worked fine for me that way.
But i went to nexus 9 and so far im happy with it

Funny enough i had the same sd card in my phone (same brand/model/capacity) and that one works fine in the tab. My phone (galaxy note 2) reads both so i swapped them. Card was Team 64GB sdxc
The nexus is a no go for me, no sd card slot is a deal breacker. Plus the tab s screen is also unbeatable. I do a lot of reading and high res graphics so it's ideal for me.

Android, and this tablet support Exfat no problem.
And you'll want exfat if you want to put HD mkv files on your card larger then 4gb (fat32 limit).
When the tablet formats a new sdcard it does so in exfat.

After reading this thread I'm starting to think maybe the S series has some micro SD hardware issues...
Mine is a totally different problem and so far i guess it hasn't affected me much i guess...
I have a SanDisk extreme 32 in mine that i used in my Note 3 and Phantom Vision Plus camera... it has worked flawlessly in those other devices... now, while installed in my Galaxy S 10.5 .... when i wake the screen i see a popup sometimes that says something about "SD card detected" ... as if i just inserted one ... but the damn thing has been in there for two weeks!?!?
So far none of the other problems listed here tho... plays all my 2K video files just fine... reads and writes with no problems... really fast as a matter of fact... i don't get it

For sure the Tab S is very picky about which SD cards it uses. When I upgrade from 64 to 128GB I'll definitely be going with a Samsung EVO/Pro or one of the new SanDisk branded cards just to be safe.

Quite right - not at all true. Android absolutely supports exFAT - that's the only format you can use over 32 GB - without using some sort of format utility...and even if that works, you can't store files over 4 GB in size (like my ripped Bluray videos). Android also supports NTFS, but SAMSUNG doesn't appear to.

So why does a 16GB Transcend card pre-formatted as FAT32 work, but a 64GB Samsung EVO ***EDIT _- IT NOW LOOKS AS IF THIS CARD IS A FAKE. The App SD Insight shows it as INVALID. The seller did not quible ; just refunded me! *** that comes pre-formatted as exFAT not work? I have had no end of little troubles, which at the bottom of it all seem to come down to this brand new SD card. The card works fine in my PC, and in a camera. I've no other Android with an SD card, having come from Nexus when the 9 was physically too big.
If I don't unmount the card before rebooting the tablet, it has decided that the card is damaged and will not do anything. When I asked it to format the card, all it did was wipe the file table - it only took a few seconds so it cannot have done anything else.
It comes to something when a Samsung tablet will not play ball with a Samsung micro SD card.

I don't really have an answer for you. I have been using a new 128 GB Sandisk card since day one (I assume it is exFAT, as I just put it in out of the box. I did no formatting or mounting) and I have had no problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly when I first booted and has worked like a champion ever since. I'm not seeing any of these problems.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. How frustrating this is... Since posting I have looked farther afield. There are all sorts of threads across various forums on the internet about SD cards suddenly not working in Samsung devices.

I had similar problems with My SanDisk Ultra 32 Gig card. I took it from my LG GPad 8.3 and deleted everything off it on my PC except my music folder, when I put the card in my Galaxy Tab S 10.5 it showed the card but I could not access my data, after a few reboots it worked for a while but was buggy and would stop working. What did work for me was copying off all my data and letting the tablet format the card, I then copied my data back to the card while it was in the tablet over USB. I have not had any issues since and it has been several weeks.

One of the main reasons for replacing LG G Pad 8.3 with Tab S were SD card unmount issues. Here it goes again. I tried two 64 GB SanDisk cards, formated FAT32 or exFAT, even zeroed out one card... The cards still stop working after heavy load from media scanner or reading large video file. The cards work fine in pc, other devices (S5, iBasso...) and even when connected to Tab S using external card reader and USB host cable.
My other cards (32 and 128 GB) exFat and FAT32 formatted SanDisk work fine in Tab S. So I'm trying to solve the issue by ordering 128 GB Samsung EVO card and hoping for the best...
EDIT: The 128 GB Samsung EVO card indeed fixed my issues - even watching large video file is fine.

I don't think it does format the card. WHen I did that in my tablet, it took a very few seconds - long enough to do a quick format i.e. clear the data area that tells you where files are, but nowhere near long enough to actually format the card. Therefore all it does is leave the card as teh same format it was beofre the command.

I doubt I'm the only one here.
I got my G4 (h812 LMY47D)and im ecstatic about using my micro sd slot (S6 was the main deal breaker paying top dollars for more storage) but now I'm running into issues with my Class 10 micros sd from Lexar, This darn software does not want to mount the thing (tried several format including a full 40 minute format @ fat 32 default allocation).
The G4 detects an SD card but won't mount it. This thing works flawlessly on my old S3 so it has to be software related as using a cheap Kingston 1gb class 4 works fine.
Anyone else running into issues with their sd card?

Are you sure the g4 does not require different format. Been awhile since i had this issue. Was a format issue for me.

tried both exFat and fat32,. it does detect a sd card is inserted but will not mount it or allowed to be erase "the options are greyed out"...

gonna have to give them a call as their user guide states
WARNING Some memory cards may not be fully compatible with the device. Using an incompatible card may damage the device or the memory card, or corrupt the data stored in it.
Not to found about this flagship! having issues reading a descent memory brand when an old rival device of 4 years is capable of doing so...

Just taught of leaving what got me to sort this out after playing around... Fun times :good:
After tinkering around with another SD card, the LG device formatted it to FAT16.
I've formatted the sd card using http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html under FAT/Primary
It created a 4gb partition and left it the remaining untouch
Popped the SD on the G4 and it finally mounted the partition
Performed an erase via the phone 2x to make sure and the entire 32gb is now accessible.
Hope that helps others having mounting issues.

I have facing same problems with my 64 GB sandisk sd card on new LG G4
can you explain the procedure to make it work

I've been using an AData 128GB for the last month or so with no problems. I turned the phone on yesterday morning and for whatever reason it went straight to my home screen but locked up and took half a minute or so to unlock and then goes to the lack screen, then I also got a SD Card inserted notification, I figured nothing of it and ignored it. The micro sd runs fine on other devices (formatted as ex-fat) but it causes that issue on startup i mentioned above as long as it's in the phone and it also refuses to mount.

I'm using the SanDisk SDSDQUAN-200G-A4A 200GB ULTRA MICROSDXC UHS-I since 2.5 months ago formatted in exfat with 128k clusters which was what it was out of the package and it works fine.

SanDisk is the only one with something larger than 128GB at this point in time and notice it's 200GB instead of 256GB as size usually doubles in capacity, heard the 56GB was used for something else or maybe not usable. I have a new 200GB card in there now. There is a 512GB card coming soon from Microdia as well.

I had the same problem with micro sd evo 64gb, I formatted to fat32 but I can't solved a problem and only when a erese older .avi file recorder with older Nokia a solved a problems and now my lg G4 work perfect with my sd evo 64gb, and so guys control file inside sd well.
