[Q] Beats or Eqaulizer? - HTC One X

Hi there,
I have just been doing some reading/research and have just found out that people believe the HOX's beats enhancer sucks?
I thought the sound quality was epic?
But people suggested getting an equalizer such as:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sImNvbS5zbWFydGFuZHJvaWRhcHBzLmVxdWFsaXplciJd
My questions are:
Does the Equaliser get rid of the beats enhancement?
Is setting an Equaliser up properly going to make music better than using the Beats?
THANKS !!!

Beats headphones are mediocre and overpriced.
Beats sound "enhancer" is a bass-heavy equaliser.
Other equalisers are configurable and work instead of the beats one, but don't get rid of it, it can still be switched on if that's what you want.
It would seem that some peoples ears or brain-wiring is broken, although what one would like to hear is quite subjective.

it depends on the app, but for me all i have tried don't override Beats, and end up like rubbish.
I didn't see any equalizer have better bass/treble than Beats, so far.
Maybe try installing beats equalizer mod (if not stock), that is the best customization option IMO.

Cheers mate
Problem is I haven't touched my HOX so completely stock.
So basically, an EQ won't over-ride beats properly?
And could cause it to be worse than usual?
So stick with beats?

Yeah man ....beats are rubbish ...use Esq equalizer ....its very good if you like bass

Ahh! Two different points of view.
Someone saying EQ sucks?
Someone saying Beats Sucks?
Which should I use?
How will I get better audio from my songs, using the in-built beats or downloading an EQ and playing with that?

I use beats with dspmanager, link not in Sig as on phone but you can get it from profile.
Beats uses compression makes the music louder at the cost of quality (audio people will hear it, most people will be like oh louder).
And as said is quite bass heavy.
Dspmanager is an eq that comes of cm roms I just put it in a zip edited a few files for sense.

If you install one and dislike it, you can uninstall it right?
I'm sure they come with some presets to give you an idea.

HTC has announced "beats" technology in their new phones that supposedly offer better audio quality when plugging in Beats headphones.
Pretty much a publicity stunt.
I think it's hardware related... chance for desire HD... but i don't think we Vision can have Beats working
What's the difference between htc dezire and g2 I thought they were the same thing and what I was asking to your question is can we get htc beats on cyanogen mod . Basicly can it be converted to an apk like a normal application would and would it run on my g2 properly running cyanogen mod nightlies

Exactly what spastic said... you can get it for AOSP (CM7/MIUI) roms with volume+ app. But, as he said, its just an equalizer. It does make an inprovement, imo.

Desire HD is capable of play Dolby and SRS while Vision is not... ROM like Virtuous Unity can make Dolby working for Vision but SRS still not work. That makes me think of the differences in hardware between these 2 devices
I've used some previous Sense 3.5 ROM that has Beats but not working or force close on activation

Any flashable zips? Link to the app? Lol i'm running aosp and i'm interested cuz the lack of an equalizer sucks
It's probably useless, actually; I found something weeks ago demo'ing how the Beats software works on laptops. It actually completely kills your bass and treble when it's off and then makes things sound magically better when it's on, because you're comparing it to garbage. I would assume that's how the phone software works too. You'd be better off just using the DSPManager that's included with CM7 and setting the EQ how you like.
However, I know the laptops get a better audio processor, and I'm sure those one or two new phones have also has better audio processing hardware, which we obviously cannot duplicate.
its not possible on cyanogen, but it works on siulmagics sense 3.0 port. ill upload it tonight maybe. and YES SRS and DOLBY also work. beats makes a huge impact for me tbh.

Yup! It's pretty easy to do. Open DSP Manager, enable Dynamic Range Compression (I recommend Moderate strength). Enable Bass boost, select the strength you think suits best. Enable equalizer, and the preset closest to beats is Rock, but as each set of headphones or earphones is different, you may wish to tweak the EQ manually too - it's simple enough. If sound is too bassy, reduce the first two points, if too much treble, the 4th and 5th points. You'll get used to the feel of it after a short while playing about.
There's no perfect EQ that suits every type of music or every set of headphones. The best thing to do is play around with it until you get a sound you really like. Presets are a good place to start, though.
Wasn't there a beats_allandroid.zip somewhere? A flashable beats library that boosts the sound quality a little? I remember flashing that onto my Milestone, which screwed the original motorola sound enhancers, but it worked perfectly with DSP manager on HTC Desire Z, and the audio was better. These were still just libraries, not an APP, DSP manager still worked better IMO. I don't know about beats headphones though, I got a higher mid-end AKG phones - plays great.

HELLO devs and noobs like me,this a mod which i extracted from the desires z forum,I extracted it because i wanted my fellow sense 3.0 user who want to feel beats audio. This addon adds BEATS AUDIO! thats because youve tweeked the sound to compliment your headphones where as beats is more generic.
just read what you said... an app doesnt care what you are plugging into it so the reason you are hearing a difference is because of your hardware and nothing to do with beats
you could configure dsp manager to sound better in your car however i no longer use dsp as the eq and preamp in poweramp is far superior
you could create an eq profile for your headphones and an eq profile for your car and then you dont have to turn anything off , just switch profile
poweramp is awesome, yes it costs money but its utterly worth it if you are a fan of good sounding music (the sound reproduction is the best ive heard on my desire with sennheisers )
beats lowers midrange on eq and hightens bass and treble, exactly like megabass. its no magic trick

Stable Beats Audio for Jelly Bean HTC One X?

Hey folks. So I recently installed a JB ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1796340
Works greats, but the only problem that is I've lost the Beats Audio driver which came with Sense 4.0 and I'd quite like it back.
I tried this one here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motioncoding.beats&hl=en
which worked perfectly to begin with, but shortly after my system became completely unstable with apps constantly crashing, forcing me to wipe my phone and start over.
So does anyone know of a solution to this? Or am I just gonna have to wait a while for a stable release, given how new Jelly Bean is?
Thanks,
PS>If any of this sounds noobish, that would be because I actually am new to all this.

Beats Audio is prepared for Sense... And IceColdJelly is completely NonSense ROM. You have to make a decision:
1. Beats audio with any Sense ROM (Stock or Custom)
2. IceColdJelly without Beats Audio.
That's all....
If you want IceCOldJelly.... Just reflash the ROM. It will be OK, I guess.

Since Beats audio really doesn't improve anything but the bass, cant you get the same result with an eq?
Power amp app is all you need.
Use this mod linked below (be sure to make a nandroid backup before you flash it). It has beats audio and a lot of other mods as well that you can select while installing the mod.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1692233
The sound with the latest version (14) is pretty good and offers beats audio from Rezound.
Use it with a player like DoubleTwist or PowerAmp which has it's own equalizer, and you can get great audio quality on your music.
Also, System wide sound equalizers and DSP manager doesn't seem to have any effect on the sound on AOSP based ROMs.
Beats audio is effectively dynamic EQ, little more. Unlike a static EQ, it's trying to EQ based on 'beats'. At a very crude level, it's boosting certain frequencies when they are needed... e.g Bass on a musical 'beat' / peak. It's a little more complex than that - it's signal processing similar to an 'exciter'.
You can get comparable results with a decent EQ app (I use PlayerPro) although EQ in this form is static and not dynamic, but Beats Audio 'just works' for almost all apps.
It's also branded and hyped to high heaven - to make it seem like some amazing feature.
Lets us not forgets, we've had HTC trying this with SRS and Dolby too...
One final thing to remember - making something sound 'better' doesn't mean it's making it more accurate! usually it's the opposite. Most users will be playing 128K mp3 files so it's hardly surprising they feel the sound lacks a little depth.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'll try the One eXtreme Sound Enhancer tomorrow and report back after a trial run.
And yeah, I am aware that Beats Audio is nothing more than a glorified dynamic EQ that's hyped marketed up the **** to appeal to people who have no idea about music production, and who think that Mr. Dre (he's not a doctor...) can magically dip his fingers into your MP3 and enhance the production values of the original master. Like trying to tickle somebody in a photograph...But it does the job very well so I'll forgive the hype.

If you can't have it with nonsense rom, you don't need to bash the product..as far as I'm concern, Beats Audio is very good..

Sense sound enhancements on AOKP/MIUI

As I'am listening to music a lot, I can't live without proper EQ + some enhancements to fill it up and make it sound how I want it to. On sense ROMS those several beats presets to choose from together with poweramp EQ and stereoX can make this job done, however on AOKP poweramp can't deliver bass at all, you have to use external AMP to get some, but even then the sound is dull and dead.. Of course you can play around with DSP manager, but it somehow just makes music sound fake, EQ works like a noise/dullness knob (lol) and virtualizer literally screws up the music, it's not even close to what poweramp or sense can do.
So, is it possible to port sense sound enhancer to other ROMS? Or maybe there is something similiar integrated in recent other branded ROMS as well?
If you like beats you could find and try one of the flashable beats zips running around.
you mean this called "awesome beats" ?
I'am afraid it's not what I'am looking for as apparently it sounded just like a renamed bass boost in dsp manager and it doesn't look as it would have anything common with HTC one. I'am looking specifically for beats solo or urbeats Sense presets or anything similiar which I haven't tried yet (maybe Xperia's have some kind of app for that?)
I'm using a miui rom and I've set srs_v sound enhancement through the snd3254 command and sound is really great. Have you tried that?

Yes, of course.
Open terminal emulator and type snd3254 -dspmode XX where XX is the number of the sound enhancement you want to apply.
To see the list of possible sound enhancements you can run it with 00.
Another option is to download SndUI app from the market. It's a UI for the snd3254 command.
It shows you the list of available sound enhancements and lets you set one.
EDIT: I get the best sound with srs_v_hp or srs_a_hp dspmodes. hp means headphones.

It's kinda interesting how it works, it surely increases treble and gives bass more headroom to DAC clipping but it comes with the price of V shaped EQ (decreased mids), which I'am afraid isn't exactly what I'am looking for.

Yea, that writing depends purely on your rom. On blackout it's "playback_v_headset_srs"
PS. It seems there are some nice Equalizers (+enhancements) in play store, do they work on AOSP/MIUI ROMS? I couldn't get them to work on Sense + poweramp.
I only tried Equalizer app from the market. It works ok but the sound wasn't the best. That's my opinion at least.

[Q] HOX music and enhancements

Hi guys! I'm kind of a music freak. Yeah I admit...I want to have a good listening experience. There are some problems though. I would like one or more of you experts to guide me. We have "Awesome Beats" and "Noozxoide". We have some mods made originally for Sony, and so on. Today I use HTC One X endeavoru.
I wonder: what would be the easiest way to test them, and combinations of them? I've noticed that some of them aren't compatible together and sometimes it sounds just terrible. Other times the phone gets nuts and nothing works. For example: yesterday I couldn't change volume in any of my music players; if I did, it shut right down. What custom rom I use doesn't matter me very much as long as I get an overall good experience. So, my questions, and hopefully, the beginning of a usefull thread starts like this, and, thank you in advance, you are great!:fingers-crossed::
1. Optimal music player for the audiophile, and optimal for the noob who don't want to config too much.
2. Mods, combos, APK or flashable? Roms that allready have and give ultimate sound experience.
3. How to temperally disable players, mods or whatever, so that one don't interfere with the ones you want to use.
My HOX is running the latest 4.2.2 ICJ build with XMkernel. Haven't flashed any sound mods.
1)Best player for me is definitely PowerAmp. Nice clean and organised interface. However if you like tweaking then have a look at Neutron Player.
2) Not really, I just downloaded Noozxoide and run my equalising through that
3) Not really necessary except I had to disable the built in app "MusicFX" for the Noozxoide app to work.
Hope this helps!

Yes, I have the same configuration myself right now, but original kernel. Is XMkernel to prefer? Well the sound is really good and I found out that I should go to settings - apps and clear and stop players that I don't use for the moment. Can you get to configure Nooxxoide thru Poweramp or do you have to do it the long way? I have some trouble too make Noozxoide do job, I mean some features work whole for example the manual settings of the EQ

For sound quality, not really necessary. Well to get Poweramp to work with Noozoxide you have to go into Poweramp Settings - Audio - Advanced Tweaks - and uncheck "Direct Volume Control". Then disable Poweramp's EQ, tone and limit.

Well, I tried that and get the EQ I want, but I can't, like in ordinary player, customize it. I havet to leave poweramp and go to the EQ. And when, like my ”awesome beats” the EQ is flashed in the system you can't reach it from ”outside". Oh yeah. I have AC!D music mod to. Also built in ICJ.

I've tried both Awesome Beats and Noozxoide on AOSP ROMs and quite frankly I didn't like any of them. I'm a huge audiophile myself (and a music producer) so all that did the job for me was tuning DSP equalizer myself.
Another recent thing I've tried and I quite liked the results (although, the sound is not as amped as having Beats enabled, but it got both ups and downs.. downs obviously being somewhat lower loudness, the ups being way cleaner and natural sound, and no distortions by the overamplification of having Beats enabled) is that I've simply flashed Walkman app from "SONY Xperia Z Walkman Clear Audio+, Movies Album & BE 2" which comes with mods, but I didn't flash any of the mods, just Walkman alone, and remove apk's that caused me force closes and errors.
Once Walkman app is flashed, DSP starts misbehaving, but kind of in a good way - the changes applied in Equalizer aren't as aggressive anymore and allows for much finer tuning, achieving the great sound described above, while still being able to bleed your ears with loudness.

Well, that sounds interesting! Guess I'll find the links by googeling. What rom are you on, and what player do you use? What quality do you havet on the music. I use to have flac or in worst case, 320-mp3. Often when you talk to audiophiles they try to convince you that a clean sound s Wright. For me the right thing is when the listener really enjoys the music. Personally I prefer a deep, pretty strong bass without loosing too much of the middle and high frequences. A good sound is what you think is a good sound. Thank you! Be shure I will try this out and come back with respons.
