Though bear in mind non rooted ones can't read ntfs. Only fat32 and exfat.

If it's a 2.5" bus powered hdd, it will work fine. Have you tried to connect it? As mentioned above you would also need to have it formatted as Fat32 otherwise the SGN2 will not be able to read the data.

this mean i need to root my phone first?
Fat32 and exFat disks are natively supported so no root required.
Ntfs requires an app like pandora which needs root.
Also, the phone may not be able to power hdds on its own. So the hdds needs is own power source or you can use a powered usb hub

I've tried a neso/Hitachi 500gb and a WD 1tb 2.5" with an OTG USB lead and my note 2 will read neither, yet my sgs3 reads both.
The neso is probably fat32 and the wd has been formatted with a mac to exfat.
Coincidentally, when using an Arcam rwave to an rcube dock the note 2 plays faultlessly yet the sgs3 "pops" during playback.
Both are UK devices running 4.1.1

If you need 500 gb you have two options: external usb powered hub (I do own a belkin one...very small and working perfect) or external powered hdd. I suggest an 2.5 ssd & external 2.5 rack which works flawless without the need of external power. You loose some space capacity but you gain extra speed .

I've been thinking abit during christmas and searching ebay after the ultimate product for theese new devices that has micro USB with OTG capabilities.
I wish for a small OTG cable with built in micro SD card reader. Now I use an OTG cable and a small reader which ofcourse gets a bit lumpy.
With todays micro SD card readers integrated into a USB shell it shoud be easy to make it as a msall unit that goeas straight into the micro usb port, eiterh as a mall dongle with all integrated or as a coonnector with up to 2 inches of cable.
Or has someone already made this and I ca't find it ?
Thats the set up I'm using. There is no 'integrated' version I can think of but I'm trying to strip mine down and integrate them into a case.

A case with integrated microSD a great idea. Would be perfect for a GN, especially my GSM version haha.
Maybe Radio shack has some small case for projects and we can put the innards in a small form factor.

works perfect on windows 7. just shows up like a flash drive would. as far as 32GB. can't say since my max card i own is a 16.
*edit* ah just saw the other post lol. Good to know a 32gig works. i'll be picking one up eventually now.

i've confirmed a 16GB card, and another user has confirmed a 32GB card.
But in my flash drive tests, NOTHING over 8GB would work. i tried 3 different brand 16Gb and 2 different brand 32Gb and none worked. Additionally no portable hard drives worked either.
pretty much confirms that the cards use a lot less power than the flash drives.

What about formatting? If I recall correctly, the phone won't read anything that is NTFS formatted, as its not in the kernel.

External hard drives require a startup power, that's why some of them have 2 USB connections. Even though they should only require one connection to work, depending on the computer you are connecting to, you may need to connect 2 USB ports to supply enough power for the hdd to spin up. After that it works fine.
I doubt the GN will ever supply the necessary power for an external HDD to work though. Best to stick to FAT32 flash drives and SD cards.
I have successfully connected a fat32 16Gb flash drive to my GN with a USB OTG adapter without any problems. Just make sure it's formatted as fat32 and not NTFS.
@esoomenona: i tried both fat32 and NTFS, on 16GB neither worked. my 32gb are all NTFS. did not know about the formatting kernel though. hope my kernel supports it since i plan on formatting my incoming 32gb microsd to ntfs.
@flakz0r: figured as much about the hard drives. my transformer can run it, so now it just needs to get ICS so it can play 720p videos without lag.

You can bug the kernel developers to try to add it for you?
Some 720P movie files are more than 4G. I`d like to watch them on my note2. Is it possible that note2 can accept external SD card that its format is NTFS? If the answer is not, is there a possible way to watch HD movies(>4G) on note2?

Not with a stock ROM, no; I've tried it. You'll need a custom ROM that has NTFS support.

You can mount if you install Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ from Play Store. Just search in Play Store for NTFS, and you'll find it.
Of course, you need root access..

Yep, got it to work with USB OTG. Sometimes strange it says out of memory and unmounts but works most of the time.

Now I will buy 1TB seagate backup plus without worrying about USB OTG functionality. My NTFS pendrive working nice on my Note 2 with Paragon NTFS software( I am on Stock ROM). So I think, I don't have to format that to exFat.

Oh by the way, I'm using the Smart Dock. Not a USB OTG only. You might have problems giving the portable hard drive power.
But I did try it with USB OTG only, what happens is when I transfer big files, it unmounts. And remounts back.

Basically it is the phone that blocks files larger than 4GB. Use a card-reader on your PC, you will be able to copy larger files than 4GB then!.
Other option is indeed, gain root and format the card in NTFS. But it is not needed. Only annoying thing is that you have to remove the MicroSD from the phone and plug-it with a adapter in the computer. I bought myself a Trust USB 3.0 Adapter for it.

Now the cons of using a card reader if you very often watching movies ur and you keep removing ur card often you will very soon notice you phone back cover becoming loose which will worry you more
An alternative is otg transfer ur movies in flash five and you can watch it from there.

On 4.1.2 it won't be a problem. On for 4.1.1 I observed that some apps gain root access in front of my eyes without asking me but I didn't observed similar behavior on 4.1.2

I have got a couple of 2.5" HDDs, which i expected to work via OTG, but no avail(not recognized anywhere, even with tools like stickmount).If at all any of you have been succesful, please post the brand,capacity,filesystem etc.
Have you tried regular micro SD cards or just external?
I've only tried it on one of my usbs this is just a normal 32 gig SD

hes talking about HDD as in 2.5 or 3.5" platter based spinning HDs. pretty much everything being pulled in storage wise for OTG is flash based as it requires WAY less energy to power as opposed to external spinning based ones. i probably just throw it out there thats theres not enough juice to run the spinning HD.
Has anyone been able to get your M7 to charge via a "Y" USB OTG cable? I have tested the one that I have other devices and they the power from the input. IE i plug up the "Y" cable to to Nokia 6350 and it charges fine.
Any suggestions?
I have been trying OTG with an external SSD to no avail. I have plenty of thumb drives. Its more of a see if i can get it to work mission
I believe the issue is kernel related. Haven't found that special custom kernel
A conventional hard drive will not work. I don't believe an SSD will work either. These simply use too much power. Just buy a 64-128 gig flash drive, which should be plenty.
Or, buy cloud storage (which can actually get expensive).

Yeah I tried a 2.5" drive and no go. Drive kept trying to spin up. Flash dongles work fine. But I have had not success reading NTSF formatted drives. FAT32 and ExFAT no problemo.
thanks for the replies..a mouse i plugged in worked perfectly, flash drives work. FYI the NTFS issue can be overcome by rooting and using something similar to stickmount.Seems to be a power issue, maybe limited by the kernel..hopefully there is a way around this

You need a USB Y-cable and an external battery to make it work. But with that, it works fine.

yes , i know, no problem with flashdrives, but external hard drives, thts the problem, a friend of mine, told me tht GS3 can mount/read HD , even its jsut a phone, so i thought tht galaxy tab 3 can do it even its ony dualcore not a quadcore! in youtube i didnt find such thing about the tab3..
Doesn't depend on how many cores a device has. Depends on how much power it can supply to the externally connected device.
USBs require low power whereas HDDs require a lot more

ok, thks for yr comment, it helped me a lot.......
I just connected a 10 port, powered, USB 3.0 hub (working in USB 2.0 I guess) connected 5 USB 3.0 harddisks and a pen drive. All drives were detected but the ntfs ones were reported as unknown file system.
You can connect terrabytes via USB on the go.

Of course your powered USB hub solution will always work, USB devices will never draw to much power from the host.
BTW, Penarukan, Keloncing, Sinabun, Suwug not so far from Singaraja
the thinkpad tablet can supply my hard drive 320 gega hitachi... and as a friend told me, the gs3 can do it too

I have just connected my tab 3 with an external 80 gb old laptop hard drive in a caddy,it has to be formatted fat and has to have a power supply.It read and played all my 40 odd films no trouble.

FYI if ur not aware u need to be rooted, have busybox (once rooted its a must have, if not for this for other important apps), get a good OTG cable, for drives with no ext power supply better get a Amkette or Transcend USB 3.0 powered USB Hub's, you wouldn't want ur drive sucking ur tab's battery like a vampire

I'm interested in getting this tablet to replace my laptop while traveling. I need to somehow download microSD cards full of pictures taken from my DSLR into an external 2.5" USB drive. You can use Total Commander and the USB plug in for it and it works fine and without root.
Otg working fine for me with mouse, keyboard, ps4 controller.
Stickmount Pro works the best in my opinion and allows you to use your favorite root explorer. Just create a shortcut to your home screen and when Stickmount mounts your micro drive all you have to do then is open the home screen shortcut

No, a regular Western Digital "My Passport" USB HDD.
My Nexus 5 provides enough power without needing a y-cable/external power. But thats probably because it has a snapdragon 800 chipset.
The Tab S uses an Exynos 5 so I'm worried it won't be able to power up the drive.
Anyone tried a USB HDD with the tab S?

Galaxy Tab S 10.5 USB OTG works with my 32gb PNY flash drive. I formatted it first in FAT 32 and my drive was recognised instantly. You can double check if it is recognised under the 'storage' option in settings, then in the USB OTG storage tab.
Then i reformatted it in exFAT on my computer and it still works perfectly. It was instantly recognised upon plugging it into the tablet.

This post was from 2014. Is your OTG still working? Mine was working up until about a year ago and now it doesn't work. I am on version 6.0.1 with the SM-T705, not rooted. I have tried using the Total Commander with USB plug in, but the tablet doesn't recognize the 16 GB USB drive at all. Any other suggestions?
