I want to root and flash cm10 on my galaxy s3, but I hear their might be some complications. I want to avoid all complications.
nobody know why we lose IMEI when flashing from ROM to ROM, its just bad luck i think, me myself been flashed more than 100+ but never happend to me.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I've never seen that happen.
But you should do a nandroid backup. If you are concerned.
I never do, but it doesn't hurt.
It's pretty straightforward.
Root with the right software and files. Odin is your friend. All, available in the stickies of the dev section.
I think people from other forums try to make it sound scary to root the s3.
Easiest phone I ever rooted. I have a cell phone store.

I lost my imei in my first flash on the s3, actually in pretty sure it's because i chose the wrong .pda. I was in the international version lol. I'm on cm10 now.

IMEI numbers are lost when you mix and match the PDA files or Modems of one version with another or if you flash any other ROM not intended for your phone. ALthough sometimes this doesn't happen. I lost my IMEI for my Galaxy S(international) but thankfully flashing a Stock Rom restored it. That is why people recommend doing a NANdroid back up or atleast backing up ur efs folder.(though i never do )

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that just a nandroid will restore your imei. If it were really that simple, I don't see why there would have been so much time devoted to coming up with a specific method to backup and restore your imei.

I would recommend using efs pro and back up your imei..its happend to me and if you dont have a backup you could be in a pickle!

Nandroid backup will not backup your imei or efs file..you need a special program..and by just making a copy if your efs will not work because there is a file signature. .

for me a simple flashing of my stock rom sufficed..or else normally you could do an efs backup and restore. well for nandroid backup never actually did one,but most people told me it was a solution so i assumed it to be one.
Does this only happen to the galaxy s3 also? Or do other phones lose IMEIs when flashing.

How exactly did you lose yours? I'm getting that its random every time, but there must be something specific that is making people lose their IMEIs.

First of all, if you rooted your phone(seeing as you have vaelpak i assume you did) how could you not pick up a few things along the way??
Secondly, there are literally hundreds of stickies, posts and other forms of information on XDA. i know, sometimes it's faster to ask a question, but this question is something that REALLY should be researched first.

if you have the keys then your fine. download clockwork app from appmarket and then have it install alternate ra recovery then boot to bootloader (vol down+power) and do nandroid backup and make sure you check the wimax box. now your keys are backed up. then try going to an earlier nandroid backup assuming you made one and see if 4g works. if its still not working use the search function for the fix your wimax thread and follow the directions there

Did you root the phone yourself or did some one else do it for you? I'm only asking because if you did it yourself using one of the many guides found all over the internet or youtube, you should know the answers to most of these questions already. I am by no means and expert but I did root it myself last Thursday and have loaded a couple different roms and kernels. My advise to you is read, read, read. If you're still not sure, read again. Its really not tjat hard. Good luck with your 4G though...

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
BigPapaBang well said. I bought my Evo back in November, but I didn't root the thing until a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to make sure I understood enough to do things right. Even now I still tread carefully. I decide on what I want to do, read and read some more, and then formulate a plan on how I'm going to proceed.
My advice to the OP, please stop and read some more.
First, make a nandroid backup. Then, back-up all your apps/data using titanium backup and just wipe everything (data, cache, etc..) and reflash the rom. if 4g works, restore all your apps and data and you should be good to go. if not, then try flashing another rom. i'd recommend mikfroyo, fresh, or myns if you want a sense rom, and cyanogen 7 wimax if you want an AOSP rom. if your 4g STILL isn't working after that, then make sure your area actually has 4g coverage (use a friends phone or something, just because the sprint site says your city has 4g doesn't mean the area you're in definitely has it). if that doesn't work, then you have a problem.
Download wimax checker from the market. Its a free app and it will check and see if your wimax keys are still intact.
What happen to my device?I Just noticed that when i open in settings..Please help anyone
The IMEI is the Individual Mobile Equipment Identifier. It's basically a way for the Provider network to identify the equipment of your phone. Normally, this shouldn't be changeable at all, unless you have unlocked several aspects of the phones security functionality. Have you been rooting your phone? I think more likely than not, the IMEI is simply not being read correctly by the ROM. Have you tried rebooting your device? Can you still make calls?
This happen to me once... I've send it back to SSC... but there is an article showing how to recover the IMEI , the link below provided by Irishcupcake last time when I was in the same situation . Hope this help..

Actually I got the exact problem with my Galaxy S & Galnet MIUI rom. The symptom was the phone suddenly unstable and restarted by itself. After that I couldn't get any signals since the modem was missing and IMEI went to zeroes.
Nitrality tool didn't work for me. Neither switching rom using cwm. But re flashing to stock rom using Odin did
So maybe you should try the same thing? Just reflash stock firmware using Odin?

I would say yes, but more importantly, if it really does work, then all of us can just backup our own EFS folder
I read that the EFS folder does not contain the IMEI, but what the hell, might as well backup that folder on my external SD (done..)
Just in case there's something to it.
Well I'm not a pro at this, is their a problem sharing my IMEI? Would that cause me issues?
What I do know is that you can back up your working EFS folder and if you ever loose your IMEI just copy back that folder and your good...

the problem with my phone is when i paste my efs folder to the root of the phone. when if reset or reboot my phone my the permission change.
the redata.bin files permission change from "rw-rw-r--" to "rw-r--r--"
i can manually change the permission back to rw-rw-r-- but when i reboot the phone it keep changing back to rw-r--r-- no matter what.
i try to do a fix permission but it won't lets me
I'll see if one of my friends can let me borrow their S3 so u can I try it on theirs.. It should be.... What you can do is back up your current EFS folder on your External and replace it with mine and see if it works... The phone boots up with the EFS deleted completely so it should be no problem putting another working EFS folder in there.... Just saying... But your welcome bro no problem..
My BEAST!!
Liquid you did take your other EFS folder out completely right? It didn't just make a other like efs1 or something like that?
Just a thought if it worked for anyone let me know if it didn't ill take it down.. It worked for me flawlessly but it might be limited to its own devise... So if more do test keep us in the loop... Thanks

Look, aside from my reservations that you might be doing something malicious, even if your intentions are good what you're suggesting is based on what you THINK, and all data posted on the subject so far says that you're wrong. I'm talking about data from experienced users and devs that have worked on this issue specifically for weeks/months.
Maybe you're a good guy who just isn't that wise, but the only thing people could do that would be fairly safe (barring any permanent loss of their own IMEI that could happen) would be to copy their OWN IMEI, and test things with that.
There are too many risks both to you and the person who uses your IMEI.

I tried it already. But it says "EFS_SYNC() was not supported".
You can always restore from the firmware's Restore/Backup.
Main Menu > UMTS > COMMON > NV REBUILD > [4] Restore Back-up
The firmware will use its default backup (they call it Golden-Backup). For me that default Golden-Backup is called Ca//NV. This is the first thing I look for. Then if I make a mistake I can restore.
But I still love learning.
I don't know if it helps but there is a option in the toolkit to Backup your EFS Partation?

Dial the following keys *#197328640#
From another post in unlocking Galaxy Note 2 sim.
And from another post in getting SGH-T889 to work with AT&T. But still need stock APN. Work for some and not for others.
We also notice both LTE and WCDMA radio bands are included.
Found out
Ok i used some of my Google mojo and found this What is EFS? It is a place that stores your Android smartphone important data like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth MAC address and IMEI (nv_data.bin). Do take note if you are a frequent ROM / firmware flasher or rooted your Android phone. Install unstable or poorly cooked ROM might cause EFS partition to be corrupted or missing. This will make your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 fail to make voice call due to missing IMEI number. Therefore better to make a backup of your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 EFS partition.

I am just rooted on stock rom...may be it needs totally stock without root

I have been having this problem is I flashed GalaxyMod RLS16 about a day ago. My phone seems to lose signal completely about every five minutes. Ten to twenty seconds later it turns back on. I have formatted my extsd card and internal card. I've re flashed to AOKP and have tried two different modems, same result. Called AT&T, they re provisioned. And it was fine for about 20 minutes and the the problem arose again and is still occurring. Any sort of tips?

Easy answer is that those Verizon based ports are not completely stable and reliable on our devices. There are APN, modem, and other issues that cause them to loose connection because for some reason they haven't been able to optimize them form our devices and there are some amazing devs working on those.
If you want reliable stick something that is at&t, tmo, or Canadian based.

Flashing ports like that can create some issues that only flash back to complete stock rom , formatting everything, and reflashing my rom (or whatever rom you choose) will fix.
Don't mean to be a burden. But, i have the stock rooted flash files for Odin on my desktop. I'd just flash those correct? And before I do something to mess anything up, I'd just flash it over your ROM right now correct? Don't need to wipe or prepare anything else right?

Same procedures used as when changing any rom. Wipe data/cache/dalvik then flash

Yes just flash back to stock using Odin. I wish some of those Verizon ROM's being ported over said WIP just so people know it still is. I've never seen so many requests for how to inject their IMEI.
No need to prepare anything else. Jusy flash stock rooted 4.1.1 and then Task's AOKP. Not my cup of tea but the heck if that man doesn't put a lot of work into that for it to be great.
My IMEI was intact the whole time. I just flashed a AT&T touch wiz ROM. (Intergalactic to be exact) and have had no problems so far..weird. Wonder what would happen if I tried an AOSP based ROM again.

It's safe to assume you will be fine. I just think it was the Galaxy ROM you flashed and interglactic is a good stable ROM. Make a nandroid and flash an AOSP one.... got nothing to lose if you back everything up.
