I would say yes, but more importantly, if it really does work, then all of us can just backup our own EFS folder
I read that the EFS folder does not contain the IMEI, but what the hell, might as well backup that folder on my external SD (done..)
Just in case there's something to it.

Well I'm not a pro at this, is their a problem sharing my IMEI? Would that cause me issues?
What I do know is that you can back up your working EFS folder and if you ever loose your IMEI just copy back that folder and your good...
My BEAST!!

Unfortunately that seems to not be the case with the Galaxy S3.. read up on the "lost IMEI" threads

Ingen what exactly do you mean bro? This way worked for me like a charm I restored my IMEI in seconds......

Jarule51082 thanks for the files, I haven't tried yet because I don't know if its safe to put your folder in place of mine, hoping someone can confirm if it is or isn't.

i tried and it doesn't work for me.
the problem with my phone is when i paste my efs folder to the root of the phone. when if reset or reboot my phone my the permission change.
the redata.bin files permission change from "rw-rw-r--" to "rw-r--r--"
i can manually change the permission back to rw-rw-r-- but when i reboot the phone it keep changing back to rw-r--r-- no matter what.
i try to do a fix permission but it won't lets me

I'll see if one of my friends can let me borrow their S3 so u can I try it on theirs.. It should be.... What you can do is back up your current EFS folder on your External and replace it with mine and see if it works... The phone boots up with the EFS deleted completely so it should be no problem putting another working EFS folder in there.... Just saying... But your welcome bro no problem..
My BEAST!!

Liquid you did take your other EFS folder out completely right? It didn't just make a other like efs1 or something like that?
Just a thought if it worked for anyone let me know if it didn't ill take it down.. It worked for me flawlessly but it might be limited to its own devise... So if more do test keep us in the loop... Thanks

Look, aside from my reservations that you might be doing something malicious, even if your intentions are good what you're suggesting is based on what you THINK, and all data posted on the subject so far says that you're wrong. I'm talking about data from experienced users and devs that have worked on this issue specifically for weeks/months.
Maybe you're a good guy who just isn't that wise, but the only thing people could do that would be fairly safe (barring any permanent loss of their own IMEI that could happen) would be to copy their OWN IMEI, and test things with that.
There are too many risks both to you and the person who uses your IMEI.
Sent from the current Heavy Weight Champ GALAXY SIII

Your probably right I'm just trying to share what worked for me.... I'm not malicious I'm just trying to help.
My BEAST!!

Guys,
What Ingen said is true you can use this method and back up your own IMEI so if you ever loose it just put the EFS file back in and you'll be good.... I apologize if my IMEI did not work for the ones who lost it...... Thanks again guys....
I took down my drop box link...

[APP] EFS Backup for Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
Here is a simple app to backup a copy of your EFS in .img format to your /sdcard folder. While it is not checked during runtime, root is required.
It's fairly basic at the moment, this being my first Android app
Hope I can improve on this while I pick up more stuff about Android programming.
Special thanks to silow whom I learnt the commands for Galaxy Nexus EFS backup.
Useful application! But you definitely need to replace that black screen when app is making the backup many will tend to close the application believing that this is not working!
So if you use this now wait 3-4 minutes and will announce when backup is done!
And definitely you need to add the Restore EFS from backup option!
EDIT!
Will be something like kTool for GN!
We need this!Good work and good luck!
In market?

That's strange, you mean it doesn't display a progress dialog with a spinner for you?
Restore is easy to add but testing if it works is a bit tricky
Nop no progress dialog with a spinner (tried 3 times)! Just black screen and then Backup done! Will reinstall and try again later!
EDIT!
Installed again and now it display a progress dialog with a spinner! Strange!
I get a pop up /w spinner for what it's worth.

In what situation could this ever happen?
Not sure about the gnex, but on the i9100 it can happen randomly with a rom flash (rarely). Independent of rom or quality thereof.

Interesting, I've flashed many a ROM, mostly on HTC devices, and never had this issue. Is it a Samsung thing?
HTC, on the other hand, seems to have a knack for killing the MISC partition
I've also had an HTC (Desire), and never knew about this EFS partition (nor did I have any issues).
I am wondering though, if it does get corrupted, and we have a backup, can we restore the .img using Fastboot if we're unable to get back into Android to use this app to restore?

So it's not really necessary, but Samsung went ahead and put it on there anyway, making sure that if it's modified/overwritten/corrupted the phone will become a paperweight?

Phones still do boot with corrupted /efs, but you will have a generic IMEI and stuff probably won't work

So the question again: Why did Samsung put this somewhere where it can be so easily overwritten/corrupted/broken?

What is EFS folder ?

Hi All,
I came to know the EFS folder is very important in Samsung phones. I didn't cared about it and flashed a different region ROM (XEU->OZS). Each thing is working fine.
I can remember that there used to be some files inside the EFS folder when I had the XEU but now i am little bit worried that the EFS folder is empty.
Many threads on XDA recommend to Backup the EFS folder before flashing new ROM. I have noticed that my Product Code has also changed after flashing the new region ROM.
So anybody can give some details that have I missed something important by not backing up the EFS folder ??
Thanks
Man.....read this:

Are you able to get your IMEI???

Or settings/about phone/status
Also check MAC address is still there!!
There is a backup option in Nitrality, free from Market.....
And, in the link I posted, there is a link to app on XDA, to backup/restore the /efs folder!!!
Are you using Root Explorer or ES to check the folder???

Thanks @irishpancake
Currently all the things are working fine. But I came across the EFS related article after I flashed a different region Rom. So I was little bit wondering that Have I done a big mistake ?? thats why i posted here.
all the basband related things are fine including SIM, Wifi, etc. IMEI is also there.
in ES i wasn't enabling Root option that's why I was seeing the blank EFS folder. Now I have copied this folder manually to my PC.
I also tried to backup through Nitrally, it says backup completed, but i am unable to find the backup efs files.
I also tried Win32 (.net) application but due to unavailability of 4.0 framework , it couldn't run.
I noticed one major thing by changing the different region Rom that my product code has been changed. I think it will not have any effect on phone performance/function.
Actually I am in search of best Baseband (Asia) so that the Radio power consumption can be minimized. So I want to try all Asian Roms to check the power consumption in Radio.
Any further suggestions will be welcome.
Thanks again.
Ur welcome ali

EFS stands for Encrypting File System, which is really important part of networking and communication for Android Smartphones, It also contains your device IMEI data. When installing the Custom ROMs, it is always recommended to backup EFS Data, because these are the places, where you might loose this data and when you lose it, it means you may no longer be able to use your smartphone for communication, ultimately which becomes just a multimedia toy!!

Might be helpful. How to Backup and Restore EFS Data/IMEI on any Samsung Android Phone
If your phone is working fine, there's no need to worry. It's most likely more technical.
Simply copying your EFS folder to your PC is a reasonable idea.....and one which most people would think would work.......
However........
If you had to restore your EFS folder from that copy, it probably *wouldn't* work.....simply because during the copying process, the permissions would have changed, and unless you have detailed knowledge of what the permissions were before copying, they'd all be wrong after re applying........
Your best bet is to do what others have mentioned and use an app to make the backup (and re apply it if necessary). I use HC k tool and then make a copy of the backup it produces on my external microSD card.......

[Q] How are people losing IMEIS?

I want to root and flash cm10 on my galaxy s3, but I hear their might be some complications. I want to avoid all complications.
nobody know why we lose IMEI when flashing from ROM to ROM, its just bad luck i think, me myself been flashed more than 100+ but never happend to me.

I've never seen that happen.
But you should do a nandroid backup. If you are concerned.
I never do, but it doesn't hurt.
It's pretty straightforward.
Root with the right software and files. Odin is your friend. All, available in the stickies of the dev section.
I think people from other forums try to make it sound scary to root the s3.
Easiest phone I ever rooted. I have a cell phone store.

I lost my imei in my first flash on the s3, actually in pretty sure it's because i chose the wrong .pda. I was in the international version lol. I'm on cm10 now.

IMEI numbers are lost when you mix and match the PDA files or Modems of one version with another or if you flash any other ROM not intended for your phone. ALthough sometimes this doesn't happen. I lost my IMEI for my Galaxy S(international) but thankfully flashing a Stock Rom restored it. That is why people recommend doing a NANdroid back up or atleast backing up ur efs folder.(though i never do )

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that just a nandroid will restore your imei. If it were really that simple, I don't see why there would have been so much time devoted to coming up with a specific method to backup and restore your imei.

for me a simple flashing of my stock rom sufficed..or else normally you could do an efs backup and restore. well for nandroid backup never actually did one,but most people told me it was a solution so i assumed it to be one.
Does this only happen to the galaxy s3 also? Or do other phones lose IMEIs when flashing.

[Q] How do I retrieve Notational Acceleration notes from Kies3 backup of Galaxy S3?

Here goes:
--Backed up wife's Galaxy S III (T999) in March, along with all app data, using Kies 3
--She was using an app called Notational Acceleration to keep a large number of notes, but no cloud sync
--T999 was replaced, due to water damage, with a Galaxy S III LTE (T999L)
--I figure the notes she made must be somewhere in the backup, so I found a file (com.kludgenics.android.notes-1.apk) that I thought might have them
--tried opening that file on her T999L and a different T999 and got the same message, "There is a problem parsing the package."
How can I find these notes in the backup? Am I looking in the wrong place? What other folders could they be in? I've tried emailing the developer but get no answer.
I greatly appreciate any help.
Wouldn't know where to find the notes but what you found was only the installer for app, the .apk no actual user information is there. The only place it would still have a possibility of being on is probably the phone unless Kies backs up Android data. You could try looking in the /Android/data folder. Alas, if it isn't there I think it is lost forever.

Thanks so much for responding.
I had a feeling the .apk was not the right place, I've used .apk files to install before. It was the only thing I could find that pointed to the app, so it was really wishful thinking. The original phone is back with t-mobile.
I just checked Kies 3, and it gives the option to back up the apps but not the app data; it doesn't seem like it's even possible to do with the program! I need to search for another backup program for Samsung phones, I'm used to complete backups with CWM on my nexus phones so I'm not used to having these problems. What terms do you suggest I use when searching for the ability to back up the /Android/data folder? Is that just considered "app data?"
I appreciate your help.
When you open that folder on your phone you generally find names of some apps on your phone. I don't use CWM or Kies so I wouldn't know about either unfortunately.

You could try the sd card of the phone you have now assuming you didn't wipe it and it could be there. But if it isn't.. I'm afraid there's nothing further you can do.

Thanks, I'll try that, though at this point I'm not expecting Kies to have actually saved anything that I'm looking for... 'Preciate your help!
As for the /Android/data folder, is data only located there if the app has root access? Because /Android/data is a root folder, correct?

It shouldn't be. It should be located in the Internal storage, or sd card. No problem, sorry about the loss of data. Hope it wasn't anything too important.
