I've been using eco mode all day at work now and i really dont see any decrease in performance but my battery life has been great. Has anyone else using eco mode noticed any difference or is it just me?
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Nope. I'm in permanent Eco mode unless my Note II buddy starts to get a little frisky with the benchmarks. That's when I have to go normal mode and pit him in his place.
I meant to say I've noticed better battery life and no performance loss.

We ran a few different ones, (quadrant, antutu, linpack, nenamark2) and after the first one, (quadrant) i felt his entire mood shift. He didn't know what he was in for
(I ran a ~7700, while as he ran ~7000) He was blown away by the graphics power difference. Just gotta teach them a hard lesson sometimes.
Mine stays in Eco Mode unless I have the urge to run some benchmarks, strictly for bragging rights. The entire system runs ridiculously fine on Eco Mode, unlike previous phones that would really lag behind while underclocked or using their preinstalled battery saving software. Pocket Legends plays fantastically on Eco Mode and I don't have to scramble to find a charger before getting killed by Skeller Krunch.
How many hours of battery life are you getting with eco mode on?

That depends on many factors for me. My job includes a lot of driving, often through areas with weak or no signal, and I'm getting around 14 hours of battery, with 2-3 hours of screen on. I too keep the phone in eco mode most of the time, and I don't see any real decrease in real world performance. I also have it set for cdma only (no LTE near me) and I typically turn wifi, gps and bluetooth off unless I need them. This is a massive increase over my old evo, which still had the original battery and would die after 4 hours of no use if I was in a bad signal area.
I had eco mode on today and went to play angry birds star wars and the game froze after a couple of minutes. Turned of eco mode no problems afterwards.

Ha! Try hours with GPS, Bluetooth music and Tethering on... the heat seems to really hit while I'm charging and doing all that. Fact! I can't touch the ass end of the phone. It probably gets about 8 hours a week like that. Still working perfectly. Samsung tells me it's normal. It also has a lot of factors for me too. I use a 1 amp charger. After 96% it's not so bad. At night when brightness is down. Not as hot. I tried to get it to mess up but couldn't. GPS, Bluetooth, tethering, charging from 30% and 100% display, and I pushed out to a low coverage area. Didn't miss a beat or melt. Lol.

Navigation makes phones really hot, but with normal usage it should stay within 30-36°C.
I like this phone's heat management more than my old phone. My Evo 3d would get hot from 10 min usage.
On this, my screen has been on for 2 hours straight and I'm running at a cool 35.1 °C.

It actually shouldn't be expected. The Snapdragon S3's also ran at 1.5ghz and was pleasantly cool and the Exynos on the Galaxy Note was at 1.4ghz. Both are less power efficient and should run hotter than the S4. I've used the Evo LTE for a while with the same S4 and it barely got warm on a hot day. The issue is with the second core being weird. For those that hasn't already, make sure you flash Freeza's fix, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790061 . This fix made my phone cool and got rid of my quickly draining battery life.
Most of the time my phone will stay within "normal" (to me) range, but when I game heavily... it turns into an oven range! I've gotten so paranoid a few times, I took the battery out and let it cooled for 5-10min
Im having the same problem....it isnt the software thats causing this its the hardware

I hope you guys will repsond to this... What do you consider to be "normal" temperature for your phone to reach? Is 35 degrees realy normal? Ive heard people with s3 talk of theirs only reaching temperatures of 29 degrees max.
Thanks.
I just got my s3 a few days ago and my battery is terrible. it shows that the cell standby is almost every second . Also compared to my gnexus when I listen to music the sound quality is a lot worse and has a lot of static. Do you guys have any of these problems?

Battery life isn't worth writing home about... not the worst I've ever experienced, but not great.
It's annoying that when game audio's playing out the external speaker, you only hear one channel... (some games sound very strange because of that)
However, the thing I have a pet peeve over is that when it's connected to bluetooth, notification sounds stutter most of the time. (not sure how to describe it other than stutter).
I'm uncertain if that issue is isolated to my phone or if it's a general issue. I'm working on getting a demo phone to test if it's my phone or a general issue with Samsung vs Kenwood...
Battery life is amazing on a custom kernel. For some reason (yields I'm guessing) most cpus are horribly over volted. I get similar battery life as my razr maxx now. Sound Quality is meh from the external speaker but pretty good from headphones.

It's just what it's called. Would you prefer there be separate items? Cell standby, cell 2g, cell 3g, cell 4g, cell data, cell roaming, etc.
"Cell standby" is the amount of power the cell atennas are using period, regardless of what they're doing.
It says right on there "Battery used by cell radio", you don't have a separate item showing battery from using the antenna with a different name do you?
I am REALLY hoping tmo allows wifi calling on airplane mode soon lol.
I've had mine for a week, replaced a MyTouch 4G running JB. So far, generally good. My only concern is how badly Temple Run plays on it. Stutter and lag worse than any Android phone since G1.

I get phenomenal battery life out of my S3 (stock).
I had an Epic 4G and was afraid to leave my desk because of the battery drain. With moderate usage (30-60 mins talk time, texting, chat, some web, exchange, ect) I can easily get 16-20 hours. Signal quality in your area will impact it more than anything. Also, wifi is vastly easier on the battery.

Post a screen shot and I'll tell ya what could be happening.
You can improve battery life by switching to custom roms with less bloatware, and updating to more efficient kernels. (This is on a Rom/Kernel level)
Software wise, just figure out what apps are causing wake times and try not to use them. Basically whenever an app/widget refreshes/updates content, it may cause phone to wake (like weather/clock widgets for example).
I have been using cpusleep and it seems to have helped my battery life ... also using a custom rom without the bloatware is key for me.
my current setup is freegs3 release 6 with the latest trinity kernel...even though its overclocked my battery has been amazing and phone has worked flawless.
Im also using system tuner which has given me the ability to manage the cpu with on demand and other customizable settings
The only thing I synch is my k9 mail account
I also have frozen several samsung apps which helped...
Im now getting over 20 hours of basic use between charges...I dont use games/videos so might be a little skewed . I use this phone for business calls/internet/messaging/photos/navi...pretty basic

What I find most telling in many of these screen shots is that Device Idle and Cell Standby are almost always in the top.

Cell standby is actually lying. It was coded with a decimal in the wrong place and so it shows that it uses a lot more than it actually does. Purely cosmetic really, but can be annoying when testing battery issues.
Edit: many custom roms have corrected this btw.

Ya, I saw that before. There is a zip floating around here somewhere that moves it from .34 to 3.4 and fixes it. But you're right that most custom ROMs have this (Cell Standby) fixed.
I just mainly think that Device Idle even being in the top 3 or 4 is a very telling sign that the phone is not being used very much.
Install the easy battery saver app.

Never heard of such a thing. Try a kernel mod app like Fauxclock or Tricksters mod. Might make all the difference. I swear by Faux's myselff, and have great performance, battery life and no added heat.
There is but it's not recommended. The phone shuts off in order to try and make sure the heat does not damage the hardware permanently. If you're phone is shutting down that often due to heat then it sounds like you need to get it replaced. I've never had it shut down due to over heating, even after hours of playing a graphic intense game with the screen at max brightness and charging..
