So half the time I open up my active app menu (holding home), a lot of the time nothing shows up until I go to the home screen and press for a second time then everything recent shows up. This common for anyone else?

Whenever i open hulu and start watching something it works fine. But when i press back or home it just goes into the background. What i noticed was whenever i have had it open, without closing it in ATK, and press the lock button i press it again but it doesnt show the lock screen. Is this happening to anyone else?
When I press the back button in the Contacts app another screen opens (this one identical to the first, except missing the "Contacts", "Groups", and "Activities" tabs), rather than exiting to the home screen as should be expected. Pressing the back button on this screen does nothing - the only way to exit the app is with the home button.
I have noticed that this does not happen with some ROMs - pressing the back button on the first screen simply exits the app without opening the second screen. Why does this happen, and is there a way to make the app always exit when pressing 'back'? I tried using the Contacts.apk from a ROM in which it works correctly in a ROM in which it does not, but nothing changes.

Press and hold the Contacts icon until the Edit Dock Shortcut window appears. Select Change Shortcut and find Contacts under Applications. Select the icon you want. You must reboot the phone for this fix to work. After the reboot, Contacts will work normally with the ability to "Back Out" to the desktop.
Thanks, that worked perfectly.
If I am in an application and my screen turns off, I hit the home button to wake the screen and then it takes me to the desktop instead of the last app I was in? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Would help you you state which app or all apps. The Home Button function is to go to the Home Screen.
To make the Home Button take you to the last app you were in, press and hold. It will give you a recent apps page.
That also has the task manager and Google options.

I don't think that's what he's refering to. If my screen is off(aka in sleep mode), when I press the home button to wake the screen back up, that's all the home button does with that press. It only wakes the screen up and leaves me where the phone was, when it went to sleep. If I press the home button, when the phone is awake, then yes, it does take me to the home screen.
To the OP,
I tried it with Touch Wiz and Nova Launcher, even using the app "nolocK' to lock/prevent locking of the screen. In all instances, when the screen was off and I hit the home button, it woke the screen up, but left me at in the same place where it went to sleep at.
Thanks so much chuck. Thats exactly what I am referring to. I have nova installed but I am having this problem. I wonder if it is some setting I have enabled.
I just installed no lock and messed with a lot of settings in nova. Same problem where if I wake the screen with the home button it takes me to the desktop and not my most recent app. Argg
i have this problem only when i have the on-screen nav bar. if i disable that it works fine. it's somewhat odd.

use the power button instead. works fine. home button does exactly what it is named for. takes you to your home screen.
Cant wait to try your rom t3! The home button never worked like this in the past. I am used to having home wake my screen and just want it the way it was.
Yeah, If the phone has just shut off and you press the home key it takes me back home, not to the app I was in. In this case I have to press the power button. I dont remember it doing this on the gs3. I remember hitting the home key if my phone shut off to turn it back on and it resumed where i left off.
So far i'm loving my new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (i317m). I've modified the setting to bypass the lock screen when i click the Home button.
The issue i'm seeing now is the screen is blanked, i click the home button, i can see the app i was using before the blanking BUT the screen promptly flashes taking me to the Home screen.
Is there any way to have the lock screen removed AND to have the home button NOT take me to the home screen IF when the home button is pressed the screen was blanked? A simple IF conditional.
Thanks for any help.
I'm trying to understand your AND statement "AND to have the home button NOT take me to the home screen IF when the home button is pressed the screen was blanked"
The first statement is easy, just pick no lock in settings but + AND statement?

Thanks so much for the response.
Yes the "AND" part is the tough part and the reason i asked it. I will clarify. The situation is this. I am well aware of the option Lock Screen >> Screen Lock | None. This was a useful option when i discovered it some time back as now when my unit blanks and i go to hit the home button to wake it up, the unit wakes and take me automatically to the Home screen bypassing the annoying Lock Screen. Terrific.
For those of us who have this option set will quickly notice an issue. If, for instance, one had Google Talk app running before the screen blanked, and later returned to wake up the unit by clicking the Home button (expecting to continue within GTalk), he will briefly see the GTalk app and then it will disappear and will now see the Home screen. One must now navigate back to the app.
I would like the Home button, if pressed to wake up the unit, to remain in the current application. This would be similar to the Power Button functionality. I'm hoping there is a "fix" for this nuisance.
UPDATE: It seems Samsung recognized this nuisance / bug and has corrected it within 4.1.2 but sadly it wont be available thru my Carrier for at least another 6 months (Canada is a bit slow with updates).
** I still would appreciate any work around in the meantime
UPDATE:
I neglected to mention i had the settings of S-Voice modified disabling opening S-Voice if the double click of the Home button occurred. I did this to speed up any Home button clicks.
I just discovered if i have this settings enabled it appears to prevent the click of the Home button to wake from exiting the existing app. The prob now is my Home button takes 1 sec (as opposed to 0.4 secs) to snap back to home when pressed. Sheesh.
Ugly but it is a start.
I've been experiencing a strange system/UI/OS bug for the past couple of months, and I've finally decided to take the time to post about it and see if anyone else encounters this.
TL;DR version: Upon restarting the phone, the Home and Recents keys will not respond with the expected software functions, although haptic feedback still occurs. After opening any app, pressing the Home button doesn't bring up the home screen, repeatedly pressing the Home button will eventually result in a blank, black screen with only a notification bar being displayed (see screenshot), and once this state is reached, there is no way to return to any app or the home screen. Multitasking/recent apps menu doesn't display, and instead of the home screen, a plain black screen with only a notification bar exists. Upon rebooting, the phone returns to the initial state described above - the home screen is displayed immediately upon boot, but the Home and Recents keys do not work as expected, and after leaving the home screen, there is no way to return to it.
Detailed version:
Upon restarting the phone, the Home and Recents capacitative keys do not work as expected. The Back button works as usual. There is haptic feedback when pressed, but the Home key doesn't bring up the home screen again, and the Recents key does not bring up the recent apps multitasking menu. If I leave the home screen by launching an app, for example, there is no way to get back to the home screen again by pressing the Home button.
If the Home button is pressed several times in a row, the active app finally gets minimized but instead of the home screen, a completely blank, black screen is displayed, with no features apart from the notification bar (see attached screenshot). Only the notification shade works, and interacting with the present notifications works only to the extent of interacting with buttons and commands in the notification entries. eg. Toggling WiFi or Bluetooth on and off, or notification drawer controls for apps like Tasker, music players, etc. However, tapping on the notification entries for those apps DOES NOT open the respective app, but returns back to the blank black screen with only the notification shade working. Attempting to open Settings via the 'gear icon' at the top-right of the notification shade doesn't work, long-pressing Quick Settings entries like WiFi or Bluetooth to open their 'advanced configuration' windows doesn't work either. Only simple toggling.
However, Asus apps in the Quick Settings section launch and work normally - Calculator, Flashlight, Bluelight Filter, etc. Pressing Home from one of these apps takes you, again, to the blank black screen with the notification bar.
This is most probably NOT a hardware problem, because haptic feedback is produced upon pressing the key, and also because long-pressing the Recents key produces the expected result (as configured in Settings)- bringing up the active app's menu, and double pressing the Home key also produces the intended effect of toggling One-Handed Mode.
This seems to happen almost every time I restart the device. After 5 - 10 restarts in a row, the device will randomly behave normally, and will stay completely functional until the next restart, and the entire cycle will repeat again.
What I've already tried
I've tried using a different launcher (although this is clearly a system-level bug, not to do with a specific third-party app). No difference.
I've tried rebooting in Safe Mode, which just leaves me with Asus Launcher crashing ('Unfortunately Asus Launcher has stopped') in a loop. I usually use Nova Launcher, but in Safe Mode only pre-installed apps work, so Asus Launcher is active but crashes immediately upon boot, and immediately crashes again in a continuous loop each time I click 'OK'. The phone is unusable because you can't actually do anything before you the app crash dialog pops up again.
Does anyone else experience this, and any ideas as to what's going on? My hunch is that it's a system level UI/OS bug, not a hardware issue.
