hopefully it wont be to say the Xperia S update is coming end of Q1 2013!!!
Looks like the Xperia U entry level phone will be getting Jellybean before they have even announced what's happening to their high end phones...
http://www.gizbot.com/mobile/sony-m...-top-5-rivals-of-mid-range-stylish-smartphone
Way to go Sony, you have seemingly destroyed your userbase... I'm off to get a Nexus4, I can't be bothered with this. My Xperia S feels much slower than my wifes Xperia U, and the camera has never been right since ICS was released.
It's a total disaster, and there is no way Sony will ever be able to fight with the big boys.

Its funny you say that I have a Xperia S and my wife the U! personally I find the complete opposite, my S running the latest .55 firmware is very quick and responsive, whilst her Xperia U with he latest latest firmware is very slow and the camera is shockingly bad!!
Its not looking good at all for us Xperia Ion owners.

The S is faster at some stuff (gaming etc), but the launcher feels sluggish at times. My wife's Xperia U running ICS has none of these slowdowns, I'm guessing because it's not got nowhere near as much screen to "maintain"...
It's very disappointing that Sony have pretty much ditched Xperia S flagship users, and seem to be focusing their efforts at the entry level (the XPeria U is a fine entry level phone WAY better than the HTC Desire C and Samsung Y)
My God, are we desperate. We are looking forward to announcements announcing promised updates.
I'd be happy with a working ICS for UK SIM free Xperia S
M an xperia u user and yup my ics is really bad... Camera autofocus, slow response everything is mashed up so we need jelly bean earlier...
And a most genuine reason for xu getting jb update before others is that is it based on sony' s own novathor chipset ( we already saw 3-4 months ago a video of novathor chipset jelly bean first boot)
Bt I still dun belive it myself that xu will get it before xs or other high ends xperias

I was right all along.
Xperia S received ICS update later than 2011 line-ups and will receive JB update later than 2012 2H flagships.
Congratulations Sony you ditched one and the most important part of your user base.
it´s ok as long as we get 4.2 instead of 4.1 . the question is will i get the nexus4 or jb update for my xs first? damn google...

Trust me, you REALLY don't want 4.2 It's a total bag of crap. It's totally ruined my Nexus 7. The Bluetooth support is totally broken.
It's 4.2.1 right now, and it has no problem with Bluetooth.
I also own a Xperia S with latest 55 FW, and a Google Nexus running 4.2.1 JB. The latest is my daily.

4.2.1 is overrated. The biggest issue is the way the internal memory is partitioned. I had a hell of a time getting titanium working again after upgrading on my N7. I dont see why we need another folder called 0.

So, this is no new news, the article is just saying an announcement from Sony for the Xperia S 4.1 is near.
Don't read Android Central articles, just follow the Xperia Twitter and Xperia Blog posts directly.
They're supposed to announce the timeline for the 2012 devices in mid-December but JB is not coming until February at least from what I've read.

So when they say S, do they mean the S as well as the SL? I'd assume so since they are essentially the same thing with a different processor.

Calm down, boys, we all very well know that official Jellybean won't be on our phones that fast. It's Sony, so we have to wait(thanks to CM, no more. After CM I see little reason to use stock). We saw news about early november/late october, now it's december, after december it will be january, and some site will yell OMG EXPARIA S IZ OPTODET TO JILLYBEAM!!!!111111
No, it won't happen before the time Sony decided. They won't just say "Hey guys, let's make a surprise" and release JB.
Hi, I'm currently still using stock rom on my xperia s. Is CM really such a huge difference? And which CM should I take? (CM 9 or 10) Thanks!

mid q1, too long will have CM 10.1 by then.
They'll announce they had to cancel the update since due to internal testing, they found the hardware not sufficient to support JB

Yeah, that made me mad a bit... I mean I love the camera and the screen of the XS but since ICS it's a piece of garbage... Losing focus, music stutters, no quick launch for cam, network drop out, random slowdowns, home screen redraw, etc... Last sony for sure... I'll try to enjoy it until it dies and then either a Nexus or WP. Enough of Android's fragmentation, late updates (if any), childish UI on other manufacturers roms, etc. I'm looking forward to see if JB improves anything but so far from what I saw on other devices (mainla cooked rom's however, it won't). We'll see (or not)

Get a Nexus.. I too am sick of Sony and their lack of updates. I had an Arc S, and it was OK, I have an Xperia S and it's terrible, FAR too many software faults, most of which you mention.
I won't make the mistake of buying Xperia again.
Im just waiting for an Sony Nexus. I dont know if it will come out one day.. If not..
Another Sony :cyclops:

No. I'll still buy a Sony as long as it's the best looking phone. I don't need updates right away for a device that I use for sms, email and phone calls.
But it needs to look good, I don't want to think 'ew this thing is ugly but at least it runs the latest android version' every time I pull out my phone.
If updates are so important to you, why didn't you buy a nexus in the first place?
It has nothing do with 'fanboys'.
Some people have different priorities in a phone than you.
My boyfriend is still satisfied with his sola even if won't get jb.
My little sister hasn't even updated her ray to ics because she doesn't even know what it is.
Some people just want their phone to work the way it did when they brought it. Which is why they bought it in the first way.

The new Nexus looks ok (it is LG but what the hell) as for the previous which was Samsung..... ewww!
It probably wouldn't put me off too much.
I've had an Arc S and the Xperia S, and loved them both. I'm also capable of flashing ROMS, so as long as theres dev support, I wouldn't be bothered if Sony are waaay behind release schedules.
The new Yuga looks awesome, although I'm not due an upgrade till October next year.
Although, after buying a Nexus 7, and getting the 4.2 update about 10 hours after Google released it, I definately consider a Nexus device as my next handset.
Not really. i like sony devices somehow and i'm inclined towards buying them always. i had couple sony devices and loved them all. i like arc s but due to half gb of ram i moved to sxs. i'm not on cm10 by fxp and loving it. though it has few bugs i really do not miss official updates. one thing i like about sony is they support open source projects. i'm waiting for xperia yuga and thinking of waiting till xperia nexus. :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:

Same here, if Sony had pushed a fixed ics, especially for UK generic then I would have happily sat back, waited for jelly bean and probably bought another Sony next summer, I don't need the latest update straight away, but I do need a phone that works. So after the way Sony treated me, not now.

I don't care about the updates.
Well... Right now I'm testing a JB ROM and it's great and everything, but I prefer stock Sony ROMs. When official JB gets released I'm going to flash it over the CM10 based ROM I have now. And also I'm thinking that my next phone will be a Sony Xperia Odin xD
Maybe Sony is going to fix all its mistakes next year, or maybe they're going to make the same bad decisions about updating their phones but the hell with that, I'm happy with my XS right now!

No need for official updates, when you've got great teams like FXP and KXP
You get CM, AOKP, MIUI plus a bunch of stock- and custom-based ROMs with even better features than the official ROMs...
That's what you get if your device gets an unlockable bootloader and gets featured on the xda portal
Tha only bad thing, though, is no CM7...

Hello there,
I am a Sony Xperia S user for 11 months now and so far I have been largely satisfied with my device. I have always run on the Stock ROM, I have not unlocked my bootloader yet and I do not intend to do so.
However, in the light of recent events I find myself thinking of a switch to another phone with better characteristics and more recent hardware. The best deal seems to be Sony Xperia T - newer chip, better support from Sony; perhaps it would receive further JB updates (4.2, 4.3) as well. Still, its recent price is just above 300 euros - unlocked and without contract - in my country. In comparison, I still have to pay about 200 euros for my Xperia S to the end of my 2-year lease contract with my local mobile service provider. That's why I am considering paying off the remaining sum of the lease in advance and then selling my Xperia S for about the same amount of money.
There are several reasons why I am considering such a switch. For one, Sony does not seem too eager to support Xperia S any longer. Yes, the 4.1.2 JB update is on the way but it has been for several months now. The numerous delays, and I am not too interested in the respective reasons, have finally put me off this otherwise pretty good all-rounder phone. Second, we have to take into account that the Snapdragon S3 chip is already heavily outdated and it would most likely not receive any further software development. When considering the alternatives, Xperia T seems to be the best one, because of its price, hardware and software. I am very fond of Sony's interface, indeed.
So I wonder what is your opinion on the matter? Is Xperia T worth it to replace my Xperia S for the next couple of years?
This thread could provide a general discussion of Xperia S's future, too.
I think its time to move on. Im never going back to Sony unless they improve. Im keeping my phone for few months more. I just bought my Sony phone and Im pretty disappointed. HTC and Samsung have better phones than Sony why settle for Xperia T or V, if you can have better.
My friend got Xperia T, and i don't like that phone.
Move on something newer, keep in mind (snapdragon 600) will receive every update before S4 and S4pro

However, I noticed it is always those few monkeys tryin to be funny, not able to listen to simple English. Sony might not be good in updating Xperia S, but they didn't break any promises and my current ICS build is flawless.
Sony might not reach Samsung's level yet but it has suppressed HTC greatly already. Those who don't know, HTC abandons HTC Sensation, the phone with the exact same CPU as Xperia S.

I own an Xperia U and it lags badly on ICS. They didnt abandon Xperia U. It is just not fit for JB. Anyways, Sony sales numbers have been steadily increasing YOY and already destroyed Motorola's and HTC's. Sony will continue to rise as 99% of customers dont give a damn about updates, fortunately.

Pretty much of your same opinion... I'm totally satisfied until now for what I've done with my Xperia S, but I really cannot stand anymore the politics of software update that Sony is pursuing.
And ok, my phone is fully unlocked and I tried a lot of custom roms to get closer to what is a pure android system, but to me those all are still full of bugs.
And to be honest, stock remains the best deal.
I'd like to switch to a pure Google Phone like the Nexus 4 but his great fragility, the weakness of the camera and the max 16gb of storage are three points that still makes me doubtful.
I'm considering the upcoming Galaxy S4 Nexus Edition...
When the official Sony JB update comes, everything changes. We can run custom ROMs without a flaw with the help of 3rd party developers. There has been rumors that Android 4.3 is still going to be JB. Even if we cant upgrade our phones to Android 5. The problem is our ROMs are'nt stable enough.

Yep, the Galaxy S phones are always a viable alternative, but I am not a big fan of Samsung. Too much plastic, and the user interface is somewhat dull and boring. Yes, the horsepower behind the back panel is immense but I am not a power user, not really. In fact, it turns out that Sony are the brand with the highest number of upper-mid-level devices at the moment (Xperia S, T; SP and ZR upcoming; not to mention all the derivatives like SL, TX, Ion, V, Acro S, etc., etc.) and I am rather leaning towards buying one such device. I am not too interested in the current flagship devices (Xperia Z, HTC One, Galaxy S4) since cheaper phones provide similar daily performance for some 2/3 of the price. Snapdragon S4 is one really capable platform and its wide availability makes it accessible to anyone.
To sum up, I am rather looking for a phone with a good manufacturer's support and expected updates till Android version 4.3, at least. The 16GB non-expandable storage of Nexus 4 is a deal-breaker for me as well. Maybe I will wait another couple of months, until SP and ZR get released and their prices decline to their true market values.
And guys, please stay on topic here. We are discussing Xperia S and its alternatives here, not Sony's customer policy in general. I know, there are many of you who are angry at the Japanese, I am somewhat dissatisfied myself. Anyway, please stop the rant because I believe this is a sensible topic and I do not want to see this thread closed. Thanks!
edit: nvm
I had similar thoughts too, until i realized that the hardware in my Xperia S is just fine for my needs for now. What is it you want to do with a newer chipset? And on the software side, I have my hopes on that things will improve somewhat once/if Sony releases the new kernel-sources.
This question has been as so many times, only you can decide what is best for you.

Hello guys! I was wondering today why that annocement hasnt been considered here on Xperia S forum, while it makes such an impression on Xperia Z forum. Its all because of http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2013/07/25/on-android-jelly-bean-4-3/#more-9209 . It clearly says: "We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @sonymobileNews for all the latest.". Guys i got used to it that you owners of XS should actually be full of hope and pleasure hearing such words, but unfortunately you always blame on news that type, so please make exception this time and try NOT to blame on me for sharing this great news (yea, ive been here around for year with my lovely xperia s but i switched to xperia z a time ago)

x10 reloaded? skip x.2 and give x.3 would be too nice, but a proper 4.1 update would do the job as well.

One reason some old devices had so much development was the fact all the source code was available. Now Qualcom is unlikely to give the source code to the dev community but Sony may be able to so this could come to the S3 chip devices. Yes I am being optimistic but it could happen and would help Sony establish itself in the device world. I just wish they would focus on less devices and create some really good phones with a longer life span. I don't get the concept of build 12 devices every year. It seems you could build four and cut more cost in parts and save a ton in development cost.

x10 reloaded? skip x.2 and give x.3 would be too nice, but a proper 4.1 update would do the job as well.

Yea, Ive got the same situation in my mind as I was an owner of x10. Most of you guys dunno that x10 was running 1.6 then 2.1, then was said to be by SONY not efficient to run properly 2.2, but then they realised that it can run 2.3 smoothly- it was highly unexpected by anyone. Also x10 as i remember at first wasnt capable of using multitouch, but SONY also here surprised us and came up with multitouch few months after x10's release. I would say that most companies cannot afford to update every portfolio smartphone thay have with every android update i mean 4.0.X->4.1.X->4.2.X->4.3.X, but some of them are able to skip minor updays only for major one and so they do.

HTC removed One S from their Android 4.2 update list because some models were with S3 processor.
There are very, very low chances (almost nonexistent) for official Android 4.3 for our Xperia's...
And that is not so much of Sony's fault, it's more Qualcoom... however, Xperia S had older processor even at the time of its launch so at the end it is Sony's fault
Guys, we have good 4.1.2 ROMs, some excellent and always progressing 4.2.2 ROMs, it is not so dark as you guys present it

What do you mean Sony's fault? You have the power to choose whether to buy Xperia S or not. Don't blame that on Sony.

I'm guessing this thread has really said what 's got to say and those that have mentioned OpenGL ES 3.0 have really put the nails in the coffin on Android 4.3
Isn't there a thread in the general section dispelling even Android 4.2 updates from Sony for the XPERIA LT26i?
If Sony do a bang up job of getting this puppy to fly on Android 4.1.2, what more could we expect of a Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 chipset anyway.
And at the end of the day when the sun sets on the XPERIA S we have a bevy of excellent XDA developers that'll make sure the wheels don't fall off our trolley that is the XPERIA LT26i.
My XPERIA X10i (64GB MicroSD, 1.15GHz CPU, 1800mAh battery) is testament to that.

And I agre with you 100% for whenever to buy S or not. I just wanted to say that Sony decided which CPU will they put into their devices. They have chosen older generation. They didn't knew how long will Qualcoom support it and I think they didn't think they'll put som much time into upgrading 2012 Xperias.
But, to say Sony is completely innocent for not being able to provide 4.2 or 4.3 to Xperia S - I disagree.

How is it Sony's fault Qualcomm didn't provide the CPU drivers? Xperia S is the first flagship of the ships launched early January. I know you have the urge that you must put the blame on someone, but do it correctly. This thread is about the direction and future of Xperia S and not "let's try to pinpoint and destroy Sony".

Hey, at least we received 3 major Android upgrades. This is ALMOST comparable to Galaxy Nexus which started off at 4.0 and ended 4.3. And you can't really blame Sony, Qualcomm didn't release new drivers for Snapdragon S3 SOCs.
I think it's time to move on, even Google is not updating the Galaxy Nexus even where its within the specification.

Ha ha.. sounds funny when u don't know the whole story.. Galaxy Nexus won't get 4.3 because Ti OMAP did what Qualcomm did to us.. Same thing.. No drivers from them.. So that being the main reason, Google covering it with 18 months reason.. Also pretty valid.. And for SONY which probably should have been released with 4.0 was released with 2.3, which they have done with all their flagships.. Z with 4.1 when 4.2 was already out, Z1 with 4.2 when 4.3 was out for months.. They are always a generation behind.. Hence we are forced to stay on 4.1.. Its like we only got 2 generations of OS.. Qualcomm might not have given drivers.. But 1 single person brought 4.2 and 4.3 for us, can't SONY, a big international NO.3 mobile company build one?? Lame reason i say.. Cheap parlor tricks.. We just have to fall for it..
as expected,we r left at 4.1.2 same as samsung cheap phones, whats the difference ? getting a flagship

Or <Sony forcing us to sell our phones and buy a newer sony product>
Of course I would be more than happy to hear about updating xperia s to 4.3 or 4.4, but it was never going to happen. And you know what? Thanks to developers such as @niaboc79 our xperia s is a great smartphone no matter how do you call the newest android version Maybe in a year from now I'll get xperia z1, z3 or z5, for now I'm really fully satisfied with what I have Of course there may be people who really need more power, more possibilities or more anything, and it's not a problem for me, but I think for average user our phone is still more than enough

even for heavy user and gamer, its more than enough.i checked the xperia z1 camera its not big deal breaker compared to our xperia s.just my only concern with this awesome xperia s is its mediocre batery life.cant last a day but its all because of my heavy usage.4.30 hours of screen on time
As some people have been saying we still have ROMS.
And yeah the only thing i complain more is the battery but it is still a great phone...
btw, just something that i am always curious. If sony cant get 4.2, 4.3 4.4 to work, why do other developer managed to get it work?

Well i am no expert but this is my take, as some people are stating Qualcomm isn't releasing any more drivers so Sony can't deliver an 100% stable version, developers release the most stable version possible but with customized drivers (which may not be perfect)
Well I think we all saw this coming. Been a nice ride though and I for one don't plan on getting rid of my Ion any time soon. A boot unlock sure would be nice though.
To be quite honest if the devs and community are still intact like it is currently for this device then no amount of of sony's paid devs can achieve what has and is being acheieved.
I believe the support of this great community of SXS owners and dedicated devs have made this device so much better than what Sony i still believe cannot achieve.
So a big Shout out to all the DeVS as they have done a fantastic job to a device that had posed a challenge to them thanks

Sony 4.3/4.4 ROMs are never going to happen for our devices. We'll just have to rely on custom ROMs and ports.
I prefer the new kitkat over any Sony ROM.

From what I have seen the only thing kit kat brings is a way to stop locked boot loader devices from being hacked. Things are going to get allot harder and we may all find our self's saving up for unlocked devices now. Kinda sucks if you ask me.
