I'm not even sure where to talk about this. It only seems to happen at home on my Linksys/Cisco 3000e BUT none of my other devices give me a problem. Here's the problem i'm experiencing....typically when I'm using a reddit app....I'm not sure of any other apps that link me straight to other content the way Reddit does.
When I'm browsing Reddit at home from my phone, connected to my cisco/linksys 3000e Wireless access point if I click on a link to the web, or a link to youtube, the youtube app will fire right up...and then wait....and it takes like 15 to 20 seconds to load, and then it's pretty quick after that. Like..there's no slowdown to cache in the video or anything. It does the same thing for web pages. On my laptops this doesn't happen. On the other hand, if I connect to the WAPs at work, or anywhere else (including the WAP that is my modem) it's fine.
I updated to the newest linksys firmware....no better. Tonight I upgraded to dd-wrt....no better
I'm at a loss and have no idea where I should be asking this question. I do have an overly complicated network, but none of the PCs or laptops in the house behind this same configuration suffer from this "initial lag". It's really weird.
hoping someone has some suggestions.
Thanks
allroy
okay, to kinda rule out my "overly complicated network" I just plugged my Win7 Laptop into the (now dd-wrt) Cisco WAP, and used Virtual Router - Wifi Hot Spot for Windows 7 / 2008 R2 and connected to my laptop...going THROUGH the cisco router.....it FLIES. just like it should. Damn...that means there's something wonky with the wireless on this WAP, but I'm not sure what it could be.
I don't have ANY security enabled on it right now. I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible for troubleshooting obviously....
man, i feel like an idiot. i've been trying TONS of stuff.....finally started googling HARD....
found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567884 where they figured it out.
changing to G only is working for now.
Ugh....not sure this was right. Sometimes it seems better, but still not great. I've spent way too long on this tonight. Need sleep.
Hopefully some of you smart cats will have something for me to try.

This phone just plain has bad WiFi drivers/chip set IMO lol.. least with ICS its plain bad.
Yeah, I'm running AOKP, but I don't think that's the problem, cuz like I said it works fine on so many other wifis. This stupid router was pretty expensive, so it's pretty disappointing that it works so poorly. I can't remembe if it used to be better or if it's always sucked.....grr.

I've googled this to death....I've tried DD-WRT, and different flavors of cisco firmware. I've tried a million different configs including single band configs....I'm at a total loss.
can someone recommend a cheap (inexpensive < $50) wireless router/access point that they're currently using and getting good speeds on? I picked up this thing http://www.microcenter.com/product/381839/W308R_Wireless-N_Broadband_Router the other day, but it doesn't seem to be able to be configured as simply an AP.
thanks guys....

Network is complex for a home network...not to a giant ISP like Savvis or whatever...but...here's what I've got....as far as wireless goes...My linksys switch connects to a 16 port gigabit network switch which connects is fed by a stupid old machine running Vmware with a pfsense firewall/proxy filter, and that vmware machine is the only machine that has access to that NIC. Then I've got a 2003/2008R2 domain set up and the 2003 server hands out DHCP and does DNS, but also the DHCP sets the 2nd dns to googles 8.8.8.8 and everything gets the pfsense vm as it's gateway.
so...it's not REALLY complex..but I don't have a linksys plugged into my cable modem.
I'm gonna give Tomato a shot...I just didn't find a step by step upgrade path for that like I did with the linksys and on top of that there are like...a million flavors of each tomato build, and I just need the one that works. I'm not doing anything super complex with the wireless, all the complex stuff is on the other side of the wireless....all it needs to do is allow devices to connect to it and pass the traffic to other places. my wireless router just needs to be an AP.
suggestions on which flavor of tomato I should go with? Std I assume is standard? if I was gonna do VPN I think I'd do it on the pfsense server, so...no VPN, Ext? what's that for an external HD or printer? nope...I'm gonna give std a shot....we'll see what happens.
no go. same lag at the beginnings of things.....I picked up a trendnet router tonight...$25.....gonna give it a shot I guess....

not that complex. so thats good. well you ruled out the router. whats left?
-what rom and modem?
- wireless interference?
- it sure does sound like something on your network though.
- how hsrd would it be to shutdown the vmware gateway and use that trendnet as a temporary firewall. shouldn't be hard since it doesn't need to do much.... might be worth it to rule it out.

I actually had this thought last night so I turned it off, then I realized it didn't make much sense that it worked on the cable modem and not on my internal wifi...didn't sound related..but I tried last night anyway.

ugh....okay..so I set the linksys/tomato to be on the same subnet as my wireless cable modem (192.168.0.x) then plugged it directly into that...made it a DHCP server and....boom, no lag...so that leaves the Vmware PFSense box...or my 16port gigabit netgear switch that connect all the network together.
I guess the most likely thing is the box with vmware on it....but I have no idea how to fix it. grrr...

initial dumb answer: because I like to make things complicated.
hmmm...that's actually an excellent question. I'm not a great networking guy, but I'm a solid PC/Server guy, so I'm always trying to mess around with new stuff (stuff I haven't messed with before....not necessarily NEW, you know?). Years ago, when I got my first sys admin job, I was 192.168 @ home and 10.168 @ work. I was doing so much at both places that I was CONSTANTLY getting the IPs confused and it was frustrating..so I switched my home network to 10.168. I used to run an app on my windows 2003 domain controller (that also was my DHCP and DNS servers) that acted was a firewall/web filter. Eventually I started toying with vmware, and for a while ran Vmware IN that windows 2003 server that ran a copy of untangle - a different firewall/web filter. It worked fine. Eventually I built a 2008 domain controller to sit with it and moved the Vmware stuff to the 2008 box because it was beefier. it's been like that for a LONG time. and then recently, I started noticing this problem that we're trying to figure out. I switched from Untangle to pfSense. I blew away the 2008 config and installed straight vmware esxi 4.1 server on the box and rebuilt the 2008 domain controller (made it R2 this time though) rebuilt the pfsense box.
Less of a dumb answer:
Mostly I like having the separate firewall box because I feel like I have a good solid firewall, i'm learning new stuff that I could potentially use in the future in a professional environment (not to mention some places LOVE to see all this geeky **** on a resume or hear about it in an interview). I guess I could use my linksys/tomato router as my firewall/DHCP/DNS.
Then there's the children. I don't wanna make it too easy for them to get to the porn....so I try to create an environment that keeps them from it. I basically try to do my job at home. Keeping the users away from dumb stuff.

WIFI seems to perform excellent on this phone and works flawlessly at home. When at work though I have to toggle wifi on and off maybe 3 times an hour. Work uses EAP and I'm thinking this is the culprit. This is the first phone I've had this problem with. Like I said it doesn't do it at home which does not use EAP.
Anyone else experiencing anything similar? By the way I looked into the wifi region fix and didn't think it applied to this situation.
Without knowing more about how the wifi infrastructure is configured, it would be hard to pin point. There are quite a few people using EAP without issue. Can you give any more details?

I don't know what other info I can provide other than its EAP and I use a user name and password to log on

I have the same problem. My g2 would connect to the eap network at work fine, but my galaxy nexus does not with the same exact settings
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Mine connects just fine on the first try but sometimes the internet just won't work. I'll show like 2-3 bars and they are blue but nothing works. Have to toggle wifi to get it back.
Maybe it has to do with me moving from one room to another and the connection drops with no indication? I can not for the life of me figure out how to use log cat! And I've tried many times in the past!
does someone found a solution to this issue?
I am also looking for a solution to get connected with my office wifi network
I'm still having this problem for the record. Different kernels and roms. Only happens at work.

Unless someone compiles it into aosp from the master branch, you won't really have eap support. I am sure it will be in next ota.

I've got and old DInc2 now that I don't use because I've got my Galaxy Nexus, but I thought I'd convert it to like a pmp kind of thing. There's always airplane mode and wifi, but I was wondering if there are any ROMs out there designed for just using it for media? This is an interesting idea. However I highly doubt that you would find anything like that.
But most sense 3/3.5 ROMs ask you if your going to use this as a phone, or just for wifi in the setup. Mabye you could check those out.

Hasta la vista, baby
There are a few roms for the Eris like this. They started popping up when everyone started upgrading to different phones. I think the devs just removed the files for cellular connection. On this phone I don't see any reason that you would need to remove them since we aren't short on internal space like that phone is. Just find a rom you like and don't activate the phone then turn off mobile networks in the settings. You can then use it like a pmp or a very small tablet :good:

Does that make it so it doesn't search for networks though? I just don't want to waste battery on that, its already disappointing enough. Currently I just have the no data over mobile network box checked, and the WiFi network I have access to right now is pretty flaky, so I'm not sure where some of my network problems are coming from.
I'm not sure if that would stop it from searching for 1x (the voice network) but it would stop from searching for 3g which uses more battery than 1x. I'll grab a link for one of the Eris rooms for you. You could pm the dev and ask him what files he removed.

So myself and the wife are at Applebee's. She gets on WiFi no issues and I can't. See below screen shots. I even rebooted my device to no avail. Mine was always unstable and would drop. Hers was solid see.pics below. Mines the N900T and hers is the N900A. Both using Att sim cards.

Unfortunately, i think its just the hardware. Your phone might have two antennas and if you find your correct kernel, you could change it to run off the best antenna possible. might take some testing and such. if all else fails go to your service provider for a evaluation

Yes, correct. Once after connecfting to the Wifi Router I need to launch the stock Samsung browser to accept their terms and conditions, this process in itself takes about 5 mins or hangs proir to terms and conditions screen it boots me off the WiFi and says its unstable or too slow per my original post.
Its just that theres too many people on the network, Thats the only issue. It mainly does this on public networks. So it is not a phone problem its a client network problem
I had this briefly on my home WiFi. Wasnt a client network as I allow 10 objects to be on mine. Its water under the bridge but that is a possibility on a public network.
sent from my sm-9005.
I had this problem in spades.
It has nothing to do with a public hotspot or router.
I'm not entirely sure it's not on some type of pattern yet, like 7 or 8 days.
I'll bet you that if you had powered off your phone for a few minutes and turned it back on, the problem would have been gone.
I am pretty sure this is something going on with the Radios in these phones.
Everytime mine gets flaky it usually resolves with a power down for a few minutes.
The other problem I've seen is that if I shut down wifi a number of times in a row because I want to use Mobile data, it will then start not staying connected when I want to use it.
I have to power off and power on and re enter the WPA2 password.
After seeing another thread with some other strange issues, I'm convinced there is a HW or SW issue related to the wifi radio.
I have seen the message exactly like you have here on a AP at my house that only has 2 clients on it and performs flawlessly.
It wouldn't connect to attwifi at Sam's yesterday for some reason.
This is one of the reasons I won't ROM it yet either. I'm still not convinced that it might not go home to the mothership at some point.
Can anybody try to copy a file from computer to your phone/SD card through wifi and let me know if you're having extremely slow speeds? I used ES File Explorer to test.
I get under 800kbps when I do the transfer, both computer and phone on the same network.
I tested with my note 4 and s6 at the same location. Both got over 10mbps, so it can't be my router. It is connected to 5ghz AC network.
My speed test for outside of network is great though, gets my advertised speed over 50/50 downlink/up link...

LOL I was in the same situation as you when I got my note 4! I started checking out a bunch of explorers in Google Play and came across Solid Explorer. It managed to do around 4-5 MB/s, that was really fast compared to what I got using ES file explorer (my favorite back then). Turns out Solid explorer is quite reach in features, especially using shares, be it smb, http, gdrive, etc).
Now a few days back, using my Note 7, still getting these speeds of 4MB/s on wifi using SMB in Solid explorer, I wanted more, since I know the wifi in Note 7 (and Note 4 for that matter) is good, getting close to 40MB/s in downloads using wifi, wondered why the heck SMB is so slow compared to HTTP protocol. I set up a webdav share using IIS on my intel NUC wired to the wireless router, and .. BAM!!! constant speeds of 40MB/s in Solid explorer. So, yeah.. if you use shares a lot in your home, use http protocol (webdav gives you also write permission I guess). Haven't tested ftp yet.. but now I don't have a reason to
So.. if you are ok with 4MB/s use Solid explorer or some other app out there, just test them!
If you want to go further and you have a good wifi router and a PC, use http. I used IIS on windows 8.1
Hope it helps!
Cheers!!

Thanks! I'll try a different explorer. Doesn't make sense that the other phones can get faster Lan transfer speeds at the same location though..
I'll also try a new router too. Good excuse to unwrap the new one

I was going to make the exact same post. I noticed the slow transfer speed last night when i try to stream videos from my network hard drive and I couldn't watch any, none of my videos played smoothly. So i tried to copy files to my phone, the speed was under 1Mbps, this was done by ES file explorer. Then i switched to Total Commander, it gave me about the same transfer speed. I noticed the connection speed under Signal Strength on Note 7 is only 260Mbps, while my other devices (Tab S, Mac Mini) show 867Mbps. However, the internet download speed is perfectly normal (tested by downloading app from google play store).
Here are things I tried but no improvement.
Turn wifi off and then on
Reboot the router
Restart Note 7
Reboot network harddrive
Forget and reconnect to SSID
Change to 2.4G SSID (Connection Speed is only 86Mbps)
Reset network settings
Wipe cache partition
Factory reset
Even factory reset won't solve this problem, the link speed is capped at 390Mbps.
Does anyone have solutions to this issue?

Nope, connection speed seems about the same when it's next to my s6 and note 4... About 230mbps according to the wifi info. This is on 5ghz AC network

Mine sucks too.. but it sucked on my note 4 and note 2 too. I think my LG G3 was better, but I can't remember for sure.
Tried different file explorers and speed still sucks... Under 1mbps transfer speed on Lan....

What kind of router do you have at home? I notice the same issue today with mine, I also use es file explorer, I have 2 wifi routers in my house both connected directly to the main router via cable. nothing over 400kb =(
I'm using the Asus ac66u router
Sent from my SM-N930P using Tapatalk
Same here.. I am actually using a the ac66u AND the N66... i wonder if its an issue with the routers..
I just tested the same file to my tab s2, and it was at 11mb + Def an issue with either the phone or the routers..
Have you done a full reset on the phone then tried again?
tested on my ol g2(surprisingly still a fast ass phone) was gettin 6 MB transfers..
So, either an issue with the note 7 hardware or issue with the asus router.

Looks like a phone issue..
The only other questions I have are..
Did you use smart switch to move all your stuff over to your new phone?
Have you tried a full reset/wipe and then only downloading es file explorer and seeing if it fixes it? EDIT - NM Read your earlier post =D

So you were within the 15 day period and just walked in and said I want a replacement? I am on my 10th day, so, If this is the case I am going to go in tomorrow and ask for one..

Main reason I dont think its the router is because like I said above, the tab s2 transfers at 11mb and the old lg g2 was at 6mb... same file on the note 7, 400-600kb.
I then tested by plugging in my nas into a new netgear N gigabit router I had around, connected my phone to the wifi(new netgear).. same speeds above.. Cant be router related..
Might be in luck if your pat the 14 day window since Samsung announced a global recall.
I have a Asus RT-AC5300 router with the latest firmware using Tri-Band smart connect setup, where the 2.4ghz, 5ghz(1), 5ghz(2) all use the same ssid, and the router the load balancing between all three radios. I also have setup up MU-MIMO on all three bands. The maximum link speed I get on the 5ghz band is 433.3 mbps when the phone is few feet away. While I have older devices connecting at 1300mbps a lot further away on a different floor. I'm hoping a software update will fix this issue.
I also have this problem.
I have RT-AC66U and I could not get more than 500KB on SMB transfer. FTP transfer was fine, only SMB.
I tried bunch of different explorer but no luck.
I did factory reset and firmware update on note 7, and resetted the router. Now I get between 1.5MB to 3.0MB.
I don't know which made the difference, still not happy with the speed though.
Yeah that is still crap, sounds like an issue with certain phones and asus routers.
I think we lucked out though, with the recall, we will all be getting new phones in a few weeks..

Hey guys,
Been using the Adguard app for a long long time and have a lifetime license. Used it on all my last devices, including the Pixel 2 XL.
I have never had a single problem. It always worked wonders.
Until now, on my P3XL it totally chokes my internet. Making loading times / refresh times literally minutes.
It makes Chrome (Beta) / Instagram / Twitter / or any other app that needs the net virtually unusable.
I am dumbstruck by this. I cannot figure out why this happens.
With Adguard off or using Blokada (but I really want to use AG) I experience none of these problems.
In the P3XL settings I already tried changing the 'Private VPN' settings to no avail.
My first question is, if anybody else is experiencing this. Or not.
And my second question is naturally, if someone has a solution or an idea of what could be going on.
Who is your provider? AdGuard has problems with T-Mobile and sounds like this is the case. I bet when on wifi you don't see this issue. I have not come across any solutions, probably best to email customer support since you have a lifetime license.

Thank you for your reply.
Im on Vodafone in the Netherlands.
The issue appears both on WIFI and Mobile Data.
I have posted my issues on the Adguard forums and finally someone is willing to help (if he can).
But I thought I would ask here too.
Maybe there are other users who also Adguard on this device. And may or may not have the same issue.
Just trying to get as much info at this point
I don't have an answer for you, but just chiming in that I use AdGuard also. No issues here. I'm running it pretty much stock (just install it, and go) with maybe the added filters for security, but I haven't changed any settings or change the VPN type. Have you modified settings, or are using it as is?
@Myrrhman Can you please link to your thread?

I have enabled some extra filters.
I have also enabled DNS in the settings. Using Adguards DNS and in that setting using DNS over TLS.

So whats it called ? Jinxed ? Or reversed jinxed ? ...
Ever since I posted here and in the Adguard forums, things are a bit better than a month ago. (But still not the way I was used to on my P2XL)
Also, connection seem a bit faster when on mobile data and not WIFI.
I'll admit, I am a bit confused now as to what is going on.
All I know is my device got one (Android security) update in the past month. But I am not too sue this made changes to my issues.
A little timeline:
1st of April I received my P3XL. One of the first things I always install is Adguard.
Internet got choked horribly (using the settings I always use). After a few days of tweaking and testing, I decided to switch to Blokada. All issues disappeared.
Around the 14th of April, i tried again. Internet got choked horribly again. But .. I disabled a system app named DNS in app settings (Adguard). This seemed to make things a lot better ... for a while
Soon all was back to truly unworkable. Back to Blokada. All issues disappeared.
2 days ago, re-installed Adguard. I want it to work !! I WANT to go back to how it was on P2XL. So also started a thread here (thinking it might be between the P3XL and Adguard) and continued also on the Adguard forums.
And now we are here, today.
With things finally looking up. But i have truly no idea why.
Anyways, I will keep on testing and probably also keep posting here. Because its still not all how it's supposed to be. I am just unsure on how to proceed from here.
And yes, I highly prefer Adguard's interface and features over Blokada. And also because I purchased a lifetime license in February of 2017.
(Phew, I'm usually not good at these write ups, but there you go )
Just a shot in the dark, but do you have data saver turned on?

This is really helpful. It shows its at least not a problem with Adguard in combination with our beautiful P3XL
Okay. Seems the issue is more present when on WIFI.
On mobile data, things are pretty fast.
I wish I had a better solution, but I had the same problems with adguard. I did the back and forth between adguard and blockada, but both had similar issues.
My best solution has been to set up Pi Hole on a Raspberry Pi 3+, but you could probably just use the Pi Zero (super cheap, but still not free).
The advantages are strong. The Pi does the heavy lifting, so there is no extreme strain on the battery. Pi Hole has great support through an amazing community--so you can get pretty surgical in your blocking. You can set up a VPN, so the Pi is handling DNS, even while you are off your home network.
I haven't given up on adguard or blockada, I think they are both decent products, but they aren't as effective as Pi Hole in my experience.

Thank you for your reply. I will keep it in mind.
I just cant let go of Adguard for some reason.
Right now the issues only occur when connected to Wifi. So I'm thinking its a setting in my router. i just have no clue what it could be.
I have changed the DNS several times, but always after a day or two, everything chokes up again. Well, i say everything, but its most notable in Chrome (Dev) and the Google app.
Whenever I use Blokada i have literally zero issues. And also when I'm on Adguard and using mobile data.
I am situated in the Netherlands. And a test someone over at the Adguard forums gave me, shows me when I'm on Wifi Adguard connects to London server. And when I'm on mobile data, Adguard connects to a Amsterdam server. Although that shouldn't matter much, they said.
Sigh. I just wish it would work like it did on my P2XL. Never had issues then. With the same router and settings.

Make sure your router isn't blocking UDP 443. Google uses that for their QUIC protocol. It will fail back to standard 443 but it will really slow you down waiting for the failover.

Thanks for your input !
So its more and more likely its either my router (Nighthawk R7000) or my provider (Ziggo)
Still doesn't explain why my P2XL never had problems.

You're welcome
I don't know what the cause is for you. I guess I'm just basically trying to let you know it could be something else that's the issue. Just cuz it's fine for me and I have it heavily configured.
I mean, theoretically, using Adguard SHOULD increase load times, however, not to the severity that you're describing - and not in such inconsistent quantities and intervals...
I'm wondering how Adguard distributes their server load as I imagine they have to be relatively spaced apart so that users further away don't experience extra latency routing through a server that's halfway around the planet...
But hey, that could be a potential cause - perhaps they shut down the server hosted in your region and so your load times are horrible now. This could at least explain why you didn't experience as much latency on your P2XL....
I had this issue before.
Turn off DNS filtering. I'm based in the UK and also disabled ipv6 as adguard won't work on 4g only WiFi
