Mod or disaster! Please help - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hey guys,
I have a rather big problem! My wife's glide is sick and dieing!
It was dropped a few days ago and has been getting stuck boot looping! It will randomly reboot and sometimes constantly reboot before it completely starts up!..
I started diagnosing it, pulled it apart checking for cracked circuits, lose connections. Finally I have found the problem... it's the power button. The slightest touch when working will send it rebooting again! I know that button is a vital part of the phone, my problem is how can I do without it?
I'm considering de-soldering it from the board. I did some testing, trying to see if it's possible to operate the phone without it.
Powering on... connect usb while holding vol down. Gets recovery (cwmr 6 non touch) the search button works as the power!
Screen unlock... slide open the keyboard.
Power off / reboot... thank you 14 toggle mod!
Screen off... leave alone, or in need of a mod... maybe reprogram the search button long press, vol up + down or something simple!
It's there a mod that can replace the power button for all uses? Including recovery and download mode?
Thanks.
P.s. to the moderator, this is prob not the place for this thread, I placed it here for all the devs to see quickly. For the revival of a deathly ill glide.

If you have skills to remove the button properly you can replace it as well.
I couldn't find these spare parts for i927 but it's a Samsung stuff so probably you can find replaceable part from ebay.
See, these buttons for the S2:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_t...kw=samsung+s2+power+button&_sacat=0&_from=R40
For Screen Off: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.droidmania.lockscreenwidget
I'm using it since years on different phones without any problem and it's working on i927 with Stock and modded ROMs as well.

I'm sorry your Glide is sick, however, questions NEVER belong in Development. Sadly I don't think this phone's General section will ever reach the threshold of posts to warrant a Q&A section. General is where this belongs.

I am on my phone or I would link to the external memory question ranking up on the boards just one above this as of the current writing anyway. I posted ways you can fix a boot loop, hopefully it didn't damage a chip inside but there is an older post from like 2-3 months ago that will give you full details of how to take apart the phone and its pretty tedious but if you know what a blown fuse looks like, you might see hardware damage similar if it fried a diode or transister somewhere. Doubtful that's the issue, but still, check if any of the hardware is loose (needle point tweezers and very gentle wiggles) if one is loose.. try to re-solder it back on, you need a soldering pencil with a pin point sized tip and just heat that one point up, use a magnifying glass to see it well.
If you don't wanna chance it, you can usually go into any radio shack and see if anyone is in the electronic parts section and ask someone there to help. Hardware modders are geeks too, they usually don't mind helping
But try the software methods first as it might have just hit so hard you might have an error in the memory is all currupt data.
If you cannot find the external SD mount topic, pm me and I will be happy to rewrite one and maybe a mod could make the guide a sticky somewhere?

Thanks guys,
After pulling the button from the phone, so far so good. It hasn't given and reboot problems. New just to find some spare parts! It's a physical push button mounted on the main board, not like the vol rocker that is a ribbon cable type. I'll have to keep my eyes out in some electronics shops. I think I might try Mouser electronics, I've ordered from then before and there located close by!
Thanks.
P.s. a guide would be good to have here for the glide! With pics on course!

Button Problems and First Root Ever

Hi, Everyone! This is my first post on here but I have spent the better part of the last week reading all the different threads. Yesterday my Samsung Epic 4G decided to go a little insane on me. It was working eprfectly fine (especially for a 2 year old phone) when all of a sudden my power button seemed to start cyling and the power off screen kept popping up and the volume keys did the same. I turned the phone off and even tried taking the battery out and giving it a rest but the problem persisted.
Another issue was that some of the numbers no longer worked correctly. The even numbers both on the touch screen and keypad would dial
"2468" instead of the corresponding number; very weird! The phone had never been rooted or modded at all. Well I was able to get into the phone after figuring out a way to input my passcode with the faulty numbers and I performed a hard reset. The phone is back to completely stock but the power button and camera button do nothing. The volume up button works well but the volume down (besides lowring the volume) button causes google search to pop up and then a bunch of letters and numbers to be typed in both the google search bar and in the message of box of the last person I texted. I can still use the phone by opening the key pad to wake the screen up and I can text and call fine as long as I don't touch the Volume Down button. Also, battery life is ridicolously low. I am up for upgrade but don;t really feel like upgrading to the S3 just yet. Sorry for the long post. I know it is against forum policy but I wanted to get the whole story out there. So here is what I am looking to do:
I want to root the phone and install one of the roms to maybe eek out a couple more weeks out of it. Again it works ok now, just the sliding out of the keypad and lack of power button sucks. The phone boots up if I take the battery out and put it back in wihtout touching the power button.
I have read up on Odin and that looks somewhat straightforward. Just trying to see what you think is my best course of action. Again, I do not have a power button working or camera button and a faulty Volume Down Button. Maybe I can do the whole slip in the battery while holding "1" to get it into download mode? This will be my first time rooting a phone so any help is great and appreciated. Thanks and again, sorry for the really long post!
I forgot to mention that the phone is currently running on Gingerbread 2.3.6. This may or may not make it more difficult to root.
Did the phone get wet at all? Use it in the rain?

was thinking this as well
It actually got wet about 1.5 years. I threw it in rice for about a week and never had any issues. The phone has never frozen or had issues the past year and a half. Yesterday it was in the kitchen charging (with a samsung charger but not one for this phone specifically) and it started doing the whole power button/power off screen flashing. I was able to get it in download mode earlier today but i don't know about recovery mode since the power button is dead. Maybe I should root it to see if its a hardware issue?
Edit: I forgot to mention that the phone gets really really hot while charging as well in the area above the battery. Hopefully nothing short-circuited.
It could take a while before the corrosin gets bad enough to affect your phone. I dropped a phone in the toilet once, and it was over 2 years before it crapped out. Took it apart and it looked like an old Chevy wheel well inside.

That is a good point. I never thought of that. It was also in the kitchen which was humid and hot as ever yesterday. Do you think any kind of root or rom could help me squeeze a little bit of life out of my old phone.

Doubtful. If you're hardware's screwed, so are you.

So I left the phone alone for a couple days with the battery out. I go to turn it on today and it worked perfectly. Then after about 5 minutes the power button stopped working again, but everything else is ok. No random letters and numbers and the volume buttons work as well. Now, I'm kind of lost as to what to do. I do have a parts phone, same one as this. Maybe I need to replace the power button? It clicks and everything and even worked for a couple minutes but now is non-functional again.

HELP! Replacing power button on phone?

Hey guys,
So today my phone started acting up, the power button has become touch sensitive. As soon as I touch it or come close to it on either side of it, it acts as if I'm holding it down. I tore it apart to see if it was sick and it isn't so I can't figure out why it's doing that? Anyone ever had this same problem or have an idea of how to fix it?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This has become a common problem with our phones; do a search for "power button" and you'll find several threads reporting the same/similar problems. Some people seem to have managed to fix their issues by wiping the area with alcohol or re-flashing their recovery and/or ROM (I personally don't see how that could help a hardware issue, but whatever). In my case, as well as several others, the power button became permanently damaged, the phone was stuck in a vibrating bootloop and the only way to stop it was to take out the battery. I chose to have the power button replaced using the MobileTechVideos repair service. I wasn't 100% satisfied with their customer service, but the power button was replaced and my phone works fine now.
I suggest the same, I got my phone back a week ago after my power button got stuck.

I bought a replacement power button for my Sprint S2, and it looks like they now offer mail-in power button repair service too. Their feedback looks better than the experience you had.

Don't bother buying a new power button yet! I had the exact same problem, and it was throwing my T989 into a boot loop. Your most likely problem is that your power button internals are getting jammed up with dirt from your finger and lint.
Here is a thread with a person experiencing a similar problem. Here is another thread where I go into detail on how to attempt to fix your problem. You already have the know-how on how to disassemble your phone, so this should be easy for you.
HERE is the original thread that I found which addresses the problem you seem to be having.
CRC QD Electronic Cleaner saved me from having to replace the hardware and I haven't had power/boot loop problems since!
If you feel as if you don't want to over-do it with the electronic cleaner, you can give your entire logic board a nice rub-down with some Isopropyl alcohol (I got mine from a general pharmacy). You should be able to get the electronic cleaner from any auto shop, but I've had specific success with CRC QD Electronic cleaner. I don't know enough about electronics or chemistry to recommend any other brand/type, so if you can't get that specific brand, then I can't help ya!

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 - Possible power button problem?

Hi,
I have purchased a Galaxy Note II a month or so ago and never had a single issue. The phone has not been rooted or ROM flashed. It's 100% factor setting and such.
Here's my problem - I recently had a minor spill and it reached my phone. I snatched it out of harm's way immediately and it was perfectly fine after I wiped it clean. After a few hours, I noticed that my phone keeps rebooting itself and it never surpasses the Samsung Logo. I have tried multiple things:
1) Removed the battery and reinserted it - This didn't work. My phone powered on even without my assistance. I didn't push the power button or anything and it just turned on (Which is why I suspect there may be something wrong with my power button).
2) I tried booting my phone into recovery mode and download mode, but it didn't quite work. I managed to enter both modes, but it just brings me back to the Samsung logo within a snap. The longest period I maintained in either of the modes was 5 seconds.
3) I swabbed a little bit of rubbing alcohol on the power button. It didn't do anything. I think it was by chance that my phone didn't reboot until a minute after.
4) I tried a spare battery I had lying around. That didn't do anything. My phone continued to reboot itself.
5) When my phone managed to stay on for a minute, the power menu kept popping up (The menu where it says "Restart, Flight Mode, Silent/Vibrate... etc).
From the points I've mentioned, does it seem like a power button issue? Does AT&T fix these kinds of issues? Is it actually hard to open the Note 2 up and put it back together after a thorough clean?
Thanks in advance guys and gals. Appreciate your help!
FROM CHINA. SIMILAR SITUATION.
Guess it's not on the power button.
maybe the liquid flew into your mainboard or under your touch screen.
Since your note2 had not been rooted.
Send it to costomer service ?
Umm I don't think any liquid entered from the screen. Chances are, it probably went in through the power button, volume controls, USB, or any combination of that.
try to unfix it and check?
seems not difficult.

It sounds like the sticky power button issue of the note 1...
And if the liquid contains sugar. ..then sticky is what gets left behind after everything else dries out.
I can't say for sure, but the residue may conduct electricity. ...causing the constant boots.
The device needs the residue cleaned out if present. ..g
Thanks! That's what I did. Brought it to a cell phone repair shop. They told me there are signs of residue and sugar left behind on the motherboard. They cleared it all out... Pretty expensive, but it got the job done!

[Q] Not-working volume rocker workaround...

Hello there nice people of Desire HD's XDA Community,
I have a somehow strange problem regarding my phone. After around 3 years my Volume Down button has stopped working. In order to turn the vol down, i have to push the Up button and then slide the bar down.
This isn't much of a problem but the real problem is that, now, I cannot enter Recovery mode if something goes wrong with my ROM. Has any of you faced something like this in the past?
Thank you for your time
If you're running a custom ROM, it probably has an advanced power menu that will allow you to reboot directly into Recovery. Just hold the power button until the power menu shows up and see what options are available. If you're using 4EXT Recovery, its Control app has a power menu that allows you to reboot into Recovery as well. If you're running CWM or TWRP, perhaps their apps have a similar option.
If your phone is off you can try connecting it to your computer and using adb to boot directly into recovery,
adb reboot recovery
hey sharksfan7... Thank you for your answers. I am familiar with all of these functions.
I was asking for something in case of the phone does not boot and there is no PC available.
Or even if some user had the same problem before and can recommend me something he/she did. Like, replace the volume rocker (although I don't think a piece of plastic is the issue. More likely some "sensor" is fried/broken)
Again, thank you for your time
If the phone won't boot, you probably need a computer.
Hi there
My vol +/- plastic broke and fell out so when i need vol down + power i use toothpick , but just before it fell out completly i noticed button has 3 pads 2 for pressing buttons and one in middle for rocking action and that one fell out completly first and after that neither vol buttons using palstic button worked, so after a while it fell out completly and i discoverwd toothpick method.
So check if buttons work when you remove big plastic bar if they do see if pads are on place, biggest black is in middle, 2 smaller for pressing near end. Or just replace whole button.

Need help in buying a new volume button...
I'm searching on ebay for a new volume button, but can't seem to decide on which one can be the best... Don't seem that most are genuine (if any at all), but I don't expect that...
Can anyone help me on this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_s..._nkw=htc+desire+hd+volume+button&LH_PrefLoc=2
When I install the new one, does it going to stay firmly attached?!?
I'm asking this, cause on the last time that I dismantle the volume button, I don't know what I did, but I never got back the volume button firmly attached again as it used to be. Now it's very loosely and it very simple to loose it from the phone and that's why I'm buying a new one... to trying to fix the volume button to work and to get it firmly attached on the phone.
Hi there,
I've got the same problem here, but my volume buttons are gone..
I've ordered one from good old china (hehe).
I think you have to set a piece of elastic glue in the center of the button to keep it in place.
At least at my phone there is a little point of glue-like stuff there, very elastic.

but do I have to put that elastic glue or does it already come with the new button that you order??
Did you already have that new button and put it on the DHD ?? If yes is it good and fits good? Where did you bought them (ebay? seller?)

Not arrived yet, will tell you then.
I think you have to organize the glue yourself..
Any news??
Yeah. Arrived this week, I just installed it. No glue delivered with the parts. And the parts aren't nearly the original, but I got two of them.
Because I'm using a cover, the volume keys didn't disappear until now.
Just took a long time to get them, next time I'm gonna spend 3-4 EUR more and order it from Germany...
Hello
I'm having an issue with the volume button too, so I'm using this thread.
I have only the down volume which is working, the up button doesn't respond whatever the ROM.
And now the button doesn't stand in place, I have to watch when i take it that the button volume stay still. (I may use some glue to fix as you wrote earlier)
Do you know what I have to change if the up is really down ?
I don't think my button is wrong, but maybe I'm wrong and there is some contact to chek before going further ?
Thank you for any help !

Disable long hold power button to reset phone?

Is there a way to disable the hard reset caused by holding the power button for 7-10 seconds? I used the xposed additions to disable the power button, but it does not disable the hard reset from the very long power button hold. The reason I want to disable it is because my power button seems defected and it constantly presses it on its own which causes my phone to reboot or shut down. I used xposed to disable the power button and it helps, but the shut downs and reboots still occur from time to time.
I highly doubt it. That's going to be something hard coded into the processor or something along those lines. On just about any system you need to have some way of performing a hard reset even when everything else is royally screwed up. Not having that function is just a bad idea IMO, though I understand why you want to stop it.
I highly recommend you look into replacing the power button though. I've seen several devices become corrupt or damaged beyond repair due to the constant rebooting.
Or at least look at the power button thread in general section. I think the last few posts describes a somewhat risky way of fixing it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. So I've decided to remove the button as a temporary solution. I'm not removing the connected part on the inside, just the plastic button on the side and hopefully that'll stop anything from ever reaching the button deep inside. My only issue would be if the phone happened to shut down and I am not around a usb port, I may be stuck with a powered off phone. Unless someone has an alternative way of powering on the device without the use of the power button or a charger?
By the way, I am the OP but didn't realize I wasn't on my account when I posted the question.
A lot of the power button issues are actually a faulty switch, meaning removing the plastic piece won't help much. If it does for you that's great though. You'll be able to use something small like a pin or paperclip to still turn it on though.
