Hi, I am new to Android and rooting and had a couple questions. I will be getting the Xperia Play R800x soon. If you get the bootloader unlocked from SE, do you still need to root the device? I have been trying to get everything ready for when I get the phone. I have Android SDK and Flashtool installed. If I want to get the NXT Light Edition Rom, do I need a custom kernel as well? Thanks.

If you get your bootloader unlocked and flash a custom kernel/ROM no you dont need to root as nearly all, if not all come with root. Seen as you have flashtool and everything else use a custom kernel. If you want to return to stock then just reflash a ftf file for r800x , make sure you dont flash a ftf for r800i though. I dont have the link handy but there is a thread here with all ftf files. Just search in XdA

Just a heads up.... The NXT light rom is gsm... It won't work on the r800x

Thank you Wedgess and Lordomn. Since the NXT light is for the GSM version, would you recommend the COLA rom, or maybe SlimBean or CM9?

You have to unlock fastboot on your phone. Flash a custom kernel and rom. Take your pick

First unlock bootloader, n find the ics rom u want from the play dev forum, u can choose from many different roms based on ics beta or else the ics beta itself

Locked Bootloader
You'll need to unlock your bootloader bro. If your Xperia is a debranded phone (bought directly from Sony) you can unlock it for free.
If you're under a carrier company, you need to check the following:
In your dialer, please put this code: *#*#7378423#*#* and if you made it corretly, it will display the service menu.
Go to Service info-configuration
Go down and see the Rooting status.
If "Bootloader unlock is allowed" says "Yes", congratulations, you can unlock your bootloader for free; otherwise you'll need to pay about $25 to unlock it. In the process your phone will be SIM free, so you can put any carrier SIM if you want.
This is the official site instructions:
http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions
¡Good luck!
Once you've got all the bootloader/rooting stuff figured out, I recommend XDarkICS ROM. It has extensive gamepad/touchpad support and is based off of Sony Stock ICS. Almost no bugs. Use DoomLord's ICS beta V3 kernel if you choose this ROM.

Ok, i understand that ICS is just not good for gaming. I have a R800ì root LOCKED BOOTLOADER. Can i still do some flashinf roms, etc etc? I'm new in these things, but i think it's time for me to begin. If i want to keep my bootloader blocked, what can i flash? Is it possible to flash Xperia NXT 1.2 rom, DIxperia 2 rom, TrueAncestor rom, etc etc?
And most important. BEFORE i do anything, is there a way to back up everything EXACTLY as it was, so i can go back to my stock 2.3.4? Thank u for your time guys:good:
Hi, assuming you are rooted, yes you can install some rom that are compatible with locked loaders. The ones you mentioned are all compatible, provided you flash the specific fw that's indicated in each of those rom
You can do a nandroid backup to backup your current rom exactly like it is right now, with cwm. Just download x parts from the market

Thank you, exactly what i needed to hear. Another queations though. Since it 's my understanding that for those roms i also need to change differents firmware (i have stock. 42 now), i would like to know if a nandroid backup include my original firmware (.42).
Ansother thing: with a locked bootloader what i cannot do? Change kernels?
My favorite so far is Gin2JellyBean 1.8.1, i still have my bootloader locked, it has some bugs like weird looking home screen when it's in landscape mode but still very smooth and great looking :silly:

Wait, sometimes i read a rom is "based on .64" or "u have to put baseband .42"....what does that mean?
Hi All,
I have a rooted ICS Arc (4.1.B.0.431) with a locked bootloader. What is a good, fast kernel for it ? Thanks in advance.
Call me silly, but you the entire benefit of unlocking your bootloader is the ability to flash custom kernels. Therefore...locked bootloader means no custom kernel.
I'm no guru....so please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong here...

I am unable to update to FW.587 OTA. The update center downloads the update and fails to update upon reboot (get an error here). I suppose my only option due to this is to flash the official .587 kernel. If I need to flash a kernel, why not a 'better' kernel ?
Then U Flash A FTF ,
Because For ME OTA Sucks !
Don't upgrade to .587. Lags too much, I went back to .431.
Kernel-wise, unlock your bootloader then try ArcKnight 3.5.1 or SEGA Kernel V3 Army edition.

heres the link for the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2210559&page=2
you can also find in the android dev section how to unlock your bootloader
ok but is compatible with r800x, games camera etc and how do i downgrade without relocking my bootloader
edit: i also saw the xdark rom and looks good what rom is the best that it will give full xperia 2011 ics experience with completely funcionality
edit2: ok i have Bootloader unlock allowed missing so how i can unlock my bootloader
sorry for my english
That's not compatible with r800x. Its only for gsm. It'll boot but it wont give you service and if you want camera and game pads you cant install on locked bootloader. Also download an ftf and flash with flashtool to downgrade without unlocking. Check out fma965s guides. They are very helpful and explain how to do everything very well

with camera and touchpads and how i UNLOCK MY BOOTLOADER WITH Bootloader unlock allowed missing
and i ask of how to downgrade without RELOCKING bootloader, no UNLOCKING
edit: ok i dont care if it is an ics or, jb or gb rom I ONLY WANT A FIX FOR CAMERA ON DIXPERIA 2 OR XPERIA NXT ROM OR TA GB ROM WITH A LOCKED BOOTLOADER
edit2k i have unlocked my bootloader so can someone please give a tutorial of how to install the xdark ics rom, i have r800x with 2.3.3
Do not install ANY GSM GB roms they are incompatable to the R800x you will get a black screen instead of a home screen. You can only install ics and jb roms. but that requires a unlocked bootloader. If you dont have your bootloader unlocked your stuck with what you have.

I've been trying to buy a Sony Xperia Ion (LT28AT) for use on T-Mobile USA where the bootloader is allowed to be unlocked. So far, all the devices I've looked at all say No.
I know I can still root an LT28AT where the bootloader unlock allowed = No, but I can't install custom ROMs and kernels, right?
But from reading threads here it seems some people can still install custom ROMs and kernels where the answer is No. Can anyone please clear this up for me?
Thanks!
With a locked bootloader you can use roms that are stock-based.
With an unlocked bootloader you can use roms that need another kernel, just like miui, cm 10 etc

Does that include CyanogenMod ROMs like CM10, CM11 etc?
Also, with a locked bootloader can anyone tell me if I can install any kernels that will overclock?
THANKS!
CyanogenMod Roms need their own kernel, and to flash this kernel, you need an unlocked bootloader.
You cant flash any custom kernel on a locked bootloader.
You must unlocked bootloader before flash another kernel.

So what ROMs are stock-based that are available on XDA?
U can actually flash cm 10 on u a locked boot loader... A developer @mrgeez is working on making cm10 rom for locked bootloaders... Some roms work on locked boot loader and some don't... But ideally don't buy a cell with locked bootloader.. Causes to many problems..

What's inaccurate about it? This is an exception because they managed to get CM10 working with a stock kernel. You can't get any higher versions though because those require an appropriate kernel that isn't stock anymore. There have been a lot of kernel changes between Android 4.1 and 4.2. So on locked bootloader you can install stockbased ROMs (like eXistenZ) and one particular version of CM10. Impossible to flash a custom kernel.
Unlocking the bootloader also has downsides though. Beyond Android 4.0, the Mobile Bravia Engine stops working on an unlocked bootloader. Without that, the colours are a bit more washed out, and the screen already isn't the most vibrant around (the Xperia S screen anyway, but the Xperia Ion screen isn't that different).
