the program def works. I use grooveip for phonecalls though so I don't use it- it would stop incoming calls, and the note2 batterylife is already insanely good. if you don't need your phone to be able to alert you to calls, emails, etc though it's great.

As theoilman states it works great if you don't need to use what it turns off. I had an app called DataEasyPro or EasyDataPro on my old SGS which was really good. It allows you to schedule data connection (Wifi has priority over 3G).I had it set up to connect ever 90 minutes for just 2 minutes. 2 minutes was enough to get social media updates and email. I should point out that it had a very ugly, but small, widget.

It doesn't impede on the incoming mail at all, it's perfect but you have to be careful when updating our changing radios

correct me if I'm wrong, but juice defender turns off data when your screen is off. that would totally stop incoming calls on groovip as well as email notifications when your screen is off. less of a big deal for emails since you will still update when you turn your screen on, but totally breaks VoIP if you want to receive calls.

Is setting the groovip on the app list as "enabled/screen off" helps, as isn't that supposed to make the data for that specific app enabled even when the screen is off? I'm not sure, since i don't have any voip app.

if you set enabled for grooveip that means that juice defender essentially won't do anything while grooveip is running. and since I have grooveip running 24 hours a day that means juice defender would never do anything on my phone.

Well, if you use this option you can still receive incoming calls when screen goes off.

it will indeed let you get incoming calls. but I believe that setting, with grooveip running all the time, will make juice defender do nothing at all except take up RAM in the background. essentially the fact that grooveip is running will tell juice defender to not work, and it ends up being a waste.

After you do that, turn off the "Always On Mobile Data" option. I still get push Gmail (the stock mail app that I use for MobileMe doesn't work hourly, but syncs when I open it and randomly without sometimes). Everything else works normal, but when your phone is locked nothing but Gmail, text messages and app alarms that use Slacker/Pandora work just fine. Pandora stops between songs (I listen while I'm setting up my work station) just hit the top power button and it'll resume.
I get about 30 hours with moderate usage. Checking about 10-20 emails per day, listening to Pandora for about an hour or so, checking some web pages, a few text messages, few photos and maybe playing Angry Birds for a bit is my moderate usage. I also keep Bluetooth off unless i'm in my car and I stream to my radio, gps is off unless I use navigation (I still use the tower triangulation for correct weather) and Wi-Fi off.
Sorry for being so long. Hope that helps.

[Q] SetCPU and JuiceDefender, are they needed anymore?

Hello,
Title says it all...
I would notice overnight that my battery would be completely horizontal (no drop) and thought it was the combination of SETCPU and JuiceDefender (night profile + screen off drop mhz).
But, after unisntalling them, I noticed the same "flat line" at night and also achieved over 30 hours of battery life.
My question is... do these apps really make a difference on our phones?
Or, are the phones advanced enough to handle everything just fine?
your thoughts are appreciated.
I agree... I got about 27 hours of life out of my battery without set cpu or JD (i've never liked JD anyway because its like putting my kid on riddlin)

Which version of JD are you using? If you have the Plus or Ultimate version, you can probably still gain some benefit, but you need to learn how to custom configure the settings so that you use the ones that are still relevant. For example:
Where Not Helpful: JD will turn off your GPS if an application isn't using it, but most of today's phones will do that anyway.
Where Helpful:: In advanced settings, you can provide a 'night schedule', wherein during this time, JD will disable mobile data, and thus polling, so your phone will not go out and check for mail, FB messages, Tweets, etc. Otherwise, mobile data is off unless you 'wake' the screen for some reason. Or another feature that 'trains' your wi-fi to only activate when you are at home or a 'recognized' wi-fi spot. These are a couple examples, there are others.
Where it MAY be Helpful: JD can disable mobile data for a custom # of minutes (10/15/30/60) and prevent background sync during those periods. It will awake, allow the sync, then turn mobile data off. Now some apps may only sync in these intervals anyway, but unless they're all syncing at the same time, you could have lots of 'up' time. Some of this may not 'wake' your phone from Deep Sleep, but depending on how sloppy the code is, it might.
Hope this helps.

I think really depends on the ROM you are running. ViperROM has a script that changes the CPU speed and governer on the fly. So no need for SetCPU there. I'd say Juice Defender can still come in handy with turning data off when you aren't using it.
My 2 cents. Your results may vary.

I use ultimate. I did run a night schedule, but that kind of points back to my original observation... I'd have night setup from 11pm - 7am and see a horizontal line for battery during this time (wow JD is really working)... BUT, with it uninstalled, during the same period of time 11pm - 7am my battery was also horizontal line... So did it really do anything? I'm on wifi at my house so when I'm sleeping the phone is wifi and not constantly pinging the mobile network (does that make a diff. being on wifi)?
I also did like the wifi only when home setting.
With ViperRom, I probably don't need set CPU anymore... Maybe i'll throw JD back on.
One question.. were you running the beta JD? I noticed the beta would always throw errors in the log stating i needed to uninstall, reboot, reinstall (I never did) anyone else have that happen?
These numbers sound like you have the radio off and don't turn your display on. Pretty amazing numbers otherwise. Would love to know the rom + kernal you're using
edit: I see the post above you mention viperrom. Typically if you have data turned off and display off any device will last days. My OG evo lasts for around 48 hours just sitting there. Still really impressive if you're using your phone within that 30 hours

I've never tried the beta; I started with standard, upgraded to Premium, then eventually upgraded to Ultimate (I use the 'Customize' setting, but rarely the 'Advanced' config).
I hear ya on the night-time wi-fi thing. But with this particular phone (and before I rooted and changed ROM/Kernel), on some nights I would be connected to wi-fi and get ZERO CPU sleep time, other nights it would sleep - I have no idea why. It is conceivable that if the only polling your doing is e.g., Gmail, that either it doesn't happen at night, or it happens in such a way as to not knock the phone out of sleep (it IS Google's OS after all).
On a related note, I'm using K-9 mail (my primary mail is Yahoo); it throws wake-locks all the time (set to poll every 15 minutes), but they don't seem to impact battery life or take the device out of deep sleep which is why I suggested that case above.
One other item I like about JD is the ability to permission each and every app for wireless/network access; obviously mail, calendar, phone, etc. need it, but some apps simply don't, and I've been surprised when I set it to 'notify' and some random game pops up seeking network access. Looking for an update? who knows, but I lock 'em down anyway.

I do not turn off data/radio (no airplane mode).
I'm running ViperRom 2.2 with the latest loskernal experimental.
My display was on for roughly 2 hours (again, just used it as i happened to during the course of the day) and data was on.

Interesting thing is with the latest JD build it has the bluetooth settings, so i can leave my headset paired, but the phone disconnects while not on a call and then when i get a call, it turns on... kinda cool.
In regards to the permissions... do i need to give the email applications permission for enable/screen off? (so that I'll still get the notifs?) or just enable (as in when screen on).
thanks,

Poor Battery Life

I am getting very poor battery life. Fully charged at 8am and dead by 5:30. Hardly even using it. I have a limited number of apps on, just a subset of those on my Nexus One and no rouge ones at all. Made a few calls, no web, a couple of gtalk posts and that is it.
See attached usage screen charge to dead and charging again!
The phone is useless like this... any ideas????
Are you in a building with poor reception? I noticed this issue when I left data on when my company moved buildings.

Is that solid blue bar from your WiFi being on all the time, or is that your awake bar on 100% of the time from a bad app?
That battery life looks atrocious. Show us the second screen to see the "awake" times.

I am not sure what you mean by awake bar?
I keep wifi and bt on all the time, as I did on my old N1. I am in the same place in the day as I was with that and will have same reception, which is not bad.
App installed are not strange at all;
Adobe Reader
Android Task Killer
AL Voice Recorder
Amazon MP3
Astro
Google Authenicator
Compass
ConnectBot
Currency Converter
ixMat Scanner
RealCalc
StopWatch
That's it, like I say a sub-set of those on my N1 and all solid apps.
I normally listen to mp3 on the N1, but have not had time on the Galaxy yet, so it;s getting less use.

Other than that, don't see anything crazy... This battery life is really strange. When your screen is using less power than the 'Android OS' it shows you're really not using the phone much, but the phone is still tanking on battery life.
I'll post those screen shots for today when I get home tonight.
A few things I have noticed though. It seems to level off at midday, this is when i leave work and go home for an hour. While at home I will be on wifi. I do not connect to wifi at work.
Secondly, while at work I notice my data often changes between "3G" and "H", while the phone is in the same place. Probably 60% H and 40% "3G". It is not practical to turn "2G" only on, as I get the volume bug and the phone becomes unusable.
I am wondering if the data signal is draining it somehow? If so, how can I work around that? Like I said, I have a N1 before the GN which sat in the same place on my desk every day and had no battery drain issue at all.
I unplugged mine yesterday at 7.30am and it died at 9pm
I used the internet on/of all day made a couple of calls and about 50 texts, screen on time was about 4 hours.
Today i've used it in a similar manner and as of now (3pm uk) 7 and a half hours in its on 57%
The battery in this thing is better than my desire, granted, not much in it but it will easily get a normal user from one sleep to another

I'd say with 95% certainty it's just signal-hunting causing the drain. With my Fascinate at work, I'll easily lose 50% battery within a couple of hours, even if I'm not using it, while at home it'll last me between 15-20 hours before getting low. Easiest solution is to just buy another charger for work, and leave your phone plugged in whenever it's on your desk.
Don't like seeing android os at the top of that list! Does the nexus share some of the problems that have plagued the galaxy s line of phones, the android os bug!? :O

I kind of think you might be right. However, a phone that drains itself while doing absolutely nothing useful at all, is no use to me. I carry it about and am in and out the office though out the day. It would be unworkable to keep putting it on charge every time I come back in the room. I need a phone I can carry around for a working day without charging. My old N1 did. If this can't do it I'll need to get short of it and get something more practical. Seems ridiculous though.
Btw, task killer just got installed by default when I upgraded. All the apps that were on the N1 were installed when I signed in. Just never deleted it
Do you leave your Wifi on all the time even if you don't have Wifi signal available? Don't do that.
If you are too lazy to manage your data connection manually all the time, I highly suggest getting the app Juice Defender from the market. You can save the battery by setting a schedule for data connection and also it will disable your wifi automatically if your phone can't find a wifi spot it can connect to.

Yes, I leave wifi and bt on. I want to be able to do this. I am not asking for it to run for days. 1 full day is all, I have not issue charging every night.
I could look at the juice monitor, however, it does not seem too much to ask to be able to get 1 full day from it of average use. To me, it seems perfectly reasonable to expect the device to work for a full day with all services running.
Is there any tool than can be used to prove that the signal hunting is eating the power? Currently is seem to be in the big pot called "Android OS"??
Well, I'm not gonna defend the phone. Leaving all radio processes on, especially when there is no signal available, is well known to drain a lot of battery since the phone uses more power to search for available networks than when it has a stable connection to one. If you leave it on in a place with spotty or no signal it will make the problem worse.
Juice Defender (the basic one anyway) is free and pretty much manages the connections for you and basically extends your battery life with minimal effort. Give it a go for a couple if days.

+1 with Chrono.... Turn off Wifi completely if you are not using it.
if you are a new android user, you should also check the settings of the phone:
hit *#*#4636#*#* in the dialpad.
this will bring up a menu. there you should try phone (i think, my n1 got stolen a while ago). there, you scroll down and there is a menu to adjust the preferred network mode.
if it's set to CDMA preferred, it will search for a cdma single. you just adjust it (i think) to gsm only. google will help you a bit here.

It's a paid app
WORTH EVERY PENNY
I have automated mine to do the following
As soon as I enter my work car park, it drops the volumes, switches off WIFI
I leave my work car park, volume to max,
I enter home, WIFI on, Volume max
after 11pm - 6.30am everything on silent, wifi & data off
then when i scan my NFC tag in the car, switches on GPS, loads co pilot
re-scan tag, turns off GPS and closes co-pilot

Was thinking the same. Any partial/wakelock issues caused by the program constantly assessing the environment. As it happens I am thinking of using the program to reduce battery drain and shutting down WiFi when out of range of home networks but if it's negated by the situation above it seems pointless for my needs.
Any one care to comment?
I've been using Tasker for a couple of years accross 4 different devices now (X10i, DHD, TF101 and GS3). I have a lot of profiles set up to do various different things and I can honestly say I've never seen a noticeable effect on battery life.
That said though I don't use the GPS location state at all. I imagine that particular state would drain battery pretty quickly. I use the WiFi Near state a lot though and, as I've said, never really noticed a detrimental drain on the battery.
I suppose it depends on what you do with it but overall IMO it's a very well written app. Extremely useful too.

Yep! This is what I was hoping to use it for too. My betterbatterystats has identified my Wifi as the one real drain on what is still a very good battery life. So although I could turn it off myself I just know I will forget to turn it back on at home and would like a program to do it for me. BUT if one negates the other it's not worth the effort.

Well your WiFi has to be on to use the WiFi Near state. You could potentially combine it with a Time state too though. Just for example you could have Tasker turn WiFi on for 1 minute once an hour to check for your network(s) then either turn off again if no network detected or connect and remain on if a network is detected... if that makes any sense!
It would save battery compared to leaving WiFi on all the time.

What effect does it have on, I have a task to turn of Wi-Fi during 10am and 1pm; but I try to turn on Wi-Fi during this period. Will it automatically turn it off again, or allow me to continue to use Wi-Fi?

It will allow you to continue to use it. That sort of profile works as a toggle based on the time state so at 10am it will turn it off - but only at 10am. If you were to turn it on again straight away it would stay on until you either turn it off manually or another profile kicks in which is set to turn it off again. The same goes for anything else such as ringer/silent/vibrate, mobile data, GPS etc.
@Greedyfly: you're welcome

Tasker can do wonders...but it requires you to be some kind of Tasker-scientist to get things done. I recently discovered Llama as well. It's free and simple but capable.
Yeah Tasker does have a reasonably steep learning curve admittedly. By no means insurmountable to most though.
I suppose it depends on what/how you want to automate. Tasker is very powerful but not so simple. Llama is free and easier to use but no so powerful.
Both are good automation solutions. Locale is another one to check out.

I've been using Tasker for the best part of a year now, awesome piece of software. Negligible impact on battery life and it's astoundingly powerful. A few examples of profiles I currently use - detects headphones/bluetooth headset and reads any text and who sent it, useful when cycling or out on the bike. Disables screen lock when at home, I use the phone as a control for my media centre so it remains unlocked at home and turns the screen on as soon as the handset is picked up, controls a variety of connection states according to location and time.
These are just scratching the surface. On top of this I've had direct dealings with the dev on a couple of occasions, genuinely nice bloke who does his damndest to solve problems as quickly as possible. All in all, this and Titanium backup are by far the two most useful pieces of software I've bought:good:

I love tasker even if it drains my battery(but it doesn't)

[Q] What's best? Wifi Off when screen is off or Wifi on all of the time?

To start off with; i get good battery life; right now I'm at 1 day 3 hours and I have 39% left.
I was wondering however, does setting the Wifi to go off when the screen is off help significantly on the battery? And if so...is there some other negative issue that I'm not aware of if I set it this way?
I'm pretty sure any sort of data connection will use more of your battery than WiFi will. So if you're always around a strong WiFi connection you probably should leave it on at all times.

Oh that is funny.
I just do everything everyone else does:
1.) Screen off when not in use
2.) Screen brightness down as much as possible.
3.) Dark theme.
4.) Tasker profiles to turn off wifi when not near my house or work.
5.) Tasker profile to turn off GPS when not actively using certain apps.
6.) Tasker profile to turn off BT when not connected.
I also am probably a light user...the only thing that I do beyond normal phone use is to watch Netflix a slight bit a day and stream Spotify a bit.
I also don't play games except Words with friends.
No FB no locations, no nothing like that.
Wifi off and data off would be most helping when screen off
