Has anyone tried switching out the sound effects played when detaching the S-pen? I know it's possible via a root file manager, but how would I go about preparing the files, format, bitrate, etc? I would really like it to play a cinematic-style sword unsheathing sound when I remove the stylus.
You will need to be rooted to do this. You can use root Explorer (paid) or solid Explorer (free)
The files are located in:
/system/media/audio/ui/
Pen_att_noti1.ogg
Pen_det_noti1.ogg
Those are the two sound files that control the remove and insert S Pen sounds.

Any recommendation for how to create a compatible .ogg file out of, say, a .wav file? I don't know if an incorrectly formatted file could cause a crash in this instance.

That I'm not sure about. I'm sure there is a whole bunch of software out there. . Probably even apps... To convert. As far as length requirements, I'm also not sure. But I'd just stick close to the duration of the rest of the ui sounds and you should be fine. I think the worst that could happen is, the sound won't trigger. ..pretty sure

The sounds I used were just small mp3 files. I just renamed them to .ogg. I don't know if you could do that to a .wav file. Give it a shot.

The lightsaber SFX are just renamed .mp3s? What bitrate/codec, or does that even matter?
Lightsabers = win, perfect to go along with my Jedi Master rom. I was to say flac will actually convert to ogg, nero, winamp, etc.

Yep. Just renamed mp3s. I didn't convert them.
Here's the files to replace the second pen removal and return sound effects with a sword unsheathing one. They shouldn't replace the lightsaber sounds, as those replaced the first sound set. These have been confirmed to work with Jedi X4, just unzip and paste them over the existing files in /system/media/audio/ui/ using Root Explorer.
If I come up with any more, I'll post them in this thread.

The gain on these files are really, really loud, almost unusable. As far as I know, there isn't a way to modify the gain in an .ogg file. Are you able to adjust them on your end?

If you use these files, you may have to manually adjust the permissions of the new files in the folder to be identical to the rest of the files. For me, it wouldn't work otherwise.

You beat me to it because I was going to say the same thing. I really like the sword sounds but like you said even on the lowest volume they're ridiculously loud. I'm pretty sure you can just rename them back to .mp3 and then use a conversion program on a pc to adjust the levels. I'll give it a shot and see if it helps and repost them if it does

I'm not sure how to but u can download the zedge app for free. Then search for the samurai sword notification. Download it. Use file explorer go to zedge folder and move the mp3 to system/media/audio/ui. Then rename the Pen_det_noti1.ogg to Pen_det_noti1.bak and rename samuraisword.mp3 to Pen_det_noti1.ogg. This is how I did it. It is rather loud but its awesome. I just turned down system volume a little and its fine.

I am kind of suck if the default sound theme. Does anyone have a sound package that would basically make all of my sounds final fantasy menu navigation sounds? For keyboard, opening and closing of menus and such.
If not. How would I do it on my own? Any good tutorials that could guide me on "skinning" the default sounds? They are boring. Lol.

FF7??
OH! Final Fantasy VII!
Indeed it is possible. If you were to download your favorite ROM and open it up you could navigate system/media/audio/ui and see all of the system ui sounds. the TW_Waterdrop is the audible sound you get when you navigate with the touchscreen.
You can also change low battery sounds, key presses, the dialer, etc.
You would need to get the audio files you want and convert them to .ogg format(I'm assuming). Then replace the stock audio with yours.
Have fun!
Thank you for the speedy reply, sir. I figured it would be something semi-simple. Just did not know if directly modifying system sounds like that would cause a lot of problems.
Guess it is off to my favorite torrent site to see if there are any good audio packages out there.

Final Fantasy soundboards
I found the developer's website who had the FFXI soundboard on the market at one point. He has FF7 there too. You can long press on each song/effect and save as ringtone, notification and/or alarm.
Enjoy.
I'm going to work on making some of them into system sounds in a flashable zip. I just need to map out what each one does.

How many sounds have you successfully replaced?
Want to get SGS3 touch tones, water unlock and lock sounds, and make the menu and back buttons have a water like effect like the SGS3??
Well you came to the right place, here I am going to teach you how to get those with a simple tut, read on:
DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible if your phone get bricked, bootlooped, unable to start etc. You take the risk to provide this modifications to your phone. Remember that you are messing with the system root partition, one small mistake might get you into serious trouble, sometimes unfix-a-ble. 99.99% success rate so proceed at your own risk. Remember to do a nandroid backup through CWM or backup the sound files if you do not want the sounds anymore, avoid losing your data if you made a mistake or find the water sounds too annoying .
:: REQUIREMENTS ::
a rooted Galaxy W
Solid Explorer, Root Explorer, ES File Manager or any that can have access to the system files
a computer to download the sound files
patience:angel:
:: LET"S GET STARTED ::
Download the files provided below and transfer them to the root of your SD card
Open up your file explorer(in this case Solid Explorer for me)
Click "Jump", "Device", "System root"
Scroll down untill you see the system folder
Select the folder and then locate the media folder inside and later select it
Select "audio" then "ui"
Backup the sound files in your system by COPYING "Lock.ogg","S_HW_Touch.ogg","TW_Touch.ogg","TW_Unlock_Glass.ogg" into your SD Card and then deleting them accordingly
Locate where you put the downloaded sounds and then copy and paste them into the same place which is system/media/audio/ui
Exit Solid Explorer and do a REBOOT(recommended)
Enjoy the sound of the SGS3

Update:
Special thanks to @yihao96 for finding a workaround for the sounds to be possible in cm9:
For cm9 user,
Download Lock.ogg and put in /system/media/audio/ui to replace the lock screen sound.
For unlock screen sound, rename Lock.ogg to Unlock.ogg and replace it in the same folder.
Download S_HW_Touch.ogg and rename it to Effect_Tick.ogg then replace the Effect_Tick.ogg in the same folder.

Hello,
thanks you very much but
1.TW_Unlock_G"r"ass.ogg must be rename to TW_Unlock_G"l"ass
2.DL for TW_Touch.ogg ist the same file as S_HW_Touch.ogg (fix it)
3. The first both files are the same as the both TW files.Maybe is that right
Thanks.
Best regards

Edit:
What are the both files
Lock.ogg and TW_Unlock_Glass.ogg for.
After replace all 4 files there is the difference only when i touch the screen ....
I use Stock Lock screen no Go locker or something else is it just cause that?
well firstly i thank you for telling me about renaming the 'r' to 'l' my mistake for it.will also fix the links. the lock .ogg file is for the lock sound when you lock the phone and the tw glass .ogg is for the water like effect sound. if you dont want it, just put back the original sound clip that you backup into the location again. is it working for you?

sorry my friend. but ics has a different sound layout as in gb touchwiz. i'm not that familiar with the system layout for cm9 so i guess none of those sounds work for it. however, there is one which is the Lock.ogg sound which MAY be able to changed as cm9 has that sound, so i will say if u are taking a risk against it, always make sure u have a backup either the sounds or a nandroid. hope this helps and i wish someone would prove me wrong on this.
here's what u gonna do:
1. download that Lock.ogg file and transfer it to your phone.
2. have a backup of the stock "Lock.ogg" in cm9 or have a nandroid backup ready just in case.
3. replace the downloaded "Lock.ogg" in the system/media/ui place and reboot.
hoping it would work to prove me wrong.remeber to do a backup(i may sound a lil pesky here because of me keep on urging you to do a backup but believe me its for the best for you, though ur phone wont get bricked for changing sound files.

Make sure that your file explorer is setting the /system folder as writable. Even if you have access to root folder of your phone, the /system folder is usually read only. Goes without saying you need root access to your device.

This post intrigued me so I tried it myself... I wanted to change the obnoxious "boop" to the tick from an aosp JB ROM and I found that All 3 of these files must be changed or else you'll still get that dang "boop":
/system/media/audio/ui/Effect_Tick.ogg (Actually, I really don't think this is necessary because I accidentally deleted this file entirely without replacement and have still achieved the same results, but if it makes you feel comfortable...)
PLUS
/system/media/audio/ui/S_HW_Touch.ogg (This is the sound for the "back" and "menu" keys on the bottom of the phone)
AND ALSO
/system/media/audio/ui/TW_Touch.ogg (This is the MAIN file that changes the sound on every touch made on the touchscreen)
Hope this helps!
And oh yeah... DEFINITELY make sure you're using a root-capable file explorer with "/System/" mounted as RW and make sure permissions are set to "rw-r-r" when you're done. And reboot for new sounds to take effect.

I was tinkering around in the sounds and found out that this works really easy.
Unfortunately the effects are not immediately noticible, it requires a reboot to have the system sounds replaced.
Also another big thing is that if you want to keep your phones original sounds just rename the file TW_Touch.ogg.off or .Bak all you need to do is add something to the end that makes the file null by the phone and it can always be changed back to reinstate the stock sound

I get you man! It almost drove crazy! and yes the sounds in question are located in /system/media/audio/ui/
I change 2 files : S_HW_Touch.ogg and TW_Touch.ogg with 2 files I picked from AOSP 4.2, set the permissions correctly and reboot ... voila , no more water-drops .
For the dialer you need to rename/remove/or replace Dialer_new.ogg in the same directory.

I replaced it = Dialer_new.ogg with other file/sound>>>>>>and it didn't help!.....the other two did changed
Only the dialer stays with the water sound
Any one?
I would love to know how to do it as well. The key tones on the dialer are very important to have certain sound, for some visually impaired people using this phone it really helps to listen to the key sound when pressing numbers to confirm right number has been pressed. Anybody at Samsung reads this forum? Can you please put back regular telephone dial sounds? What was wrong with the sound? This device is a telephone, right? If anybody can help me I would donate him. Thanx.

Since changing the other sounds worked for me, I assumed it would be the same for the dialer. I was wrong, I apologize.
No one? Come guys (and girls?)...I changed all 3 .ogg files as well, but unfortunately the Dialer sound is still the terrible water sound...although I can't find a SINGLE file on my phone anymore which IS that sound...so where does the phone find that sound/file????? Aaaaaaaaaaaarghhhhh!!!
This is spooky...or is it an encrypted file just to tease us?
Thanks,
ChaosDM
Can someone post the alternative files please? ?
thanks to Androssama for the files.
the files are here for the needy.
btw, the dialer sound is not annoying as it is a bit different now that the other sounds are changed to better ones.
you have to change the mount from R/O to R/W in the root explorer. & make a backup of the old files just in case. then copy paste the new files overwriting the old ones. change back the permission from R/W to R/O, reboot & enjoy.

Being rooted, w/ Note 2 and using root explorer, I changed to R/W, replaced Dialer_New.ogg, S_HW_Touch.ogg, and TW_Touch.ogg, changed permissions on them taking Write off, back to R/O mode, rebooted, and still dialer has drop sounds... Not getting this, am I missing something?

Did you try renaming the new sound file to Dialer_New.ogg?
I know it's been a long time but i just found this and wanted to share it with you guys:

Now after unzipping the apk the ogg file is there, it should be the one as it sounds like the dialer. I tried all the stupid tricks I know (replacing it with another file and zipping back the whole thing, renaming it to apk since apk files are just fancy zips => didn't work. Tried embedding it in a flashable vrtheme zip file since those decompile, mod and recompile the apk => didn't work.) I don't know how to properly decompile an apk and since everyone is using a different ROM it'll be difficult to post requests.
I've been able to change the touch sounds from water drop to click which was pretty straight forward however the keypad dialler 'spelling"
was located in a different place than otherwise noted on the forum.
The dialler touch sounds were located in a different place than the touch wiz sounds. and it was one file not broken down into 1 2 3 ect.
This is for 4.1.2 i9100.
So I put it into the to hard to do basket and just left it. Sure you can use a app dialler but I like stock.
Wouldn't you think that someone as big as Samsung would allow you to make a simple sound change just by going to settings - sound.
Good luck.

I've been looking all over for this sound file (it's not Dialer_New.ogg in System/Media/Audio/UI)
I would be happy to replace the dialer sound with just a single touch tone sound I already have but can't locate the file.
(EDIT) - nevermind - now I understand the post above indicates that the file is located inside SecContacts.apk
SecContacts.apk\res\raw\touch.ogg
Does anyone know where to find the above file? I searched in Root Explorer from the top level (Root) but didn't find it.
Thanks
Hello!
The stock unlock and lock stock sounds in the One are too quiet, only supersonic equipped machines could detect them!!
So I took them off, normalized(volume) them using a pro sound editor and voila!
Now you can finally hear the sounds when unlocking or locking the screen.
UNZIP the file,it's not a flashable zip
You can rather use a file browser for root like Root Explorer:
-Place the 2 ogg files in your SD card
-Copy
-Paste into system/media/audio/ui
-Restart!!
-Don't forget to enable the lock sound in system settings
Or Push via ADB from your computer:
-adb remount
-adb push unlock.ogg system/media/audio/ui
-adb push lock.ogg system/media/audio/ui
-adb reboot
Lock.zip = Normalized volume
stocks.zip = Louder than normalised
OneX.zip = Normalized stock sounds from OneX
NEW NOKIA X unlock/lock sounds = Nokiax.zip
So did it work for you?
Do you have other stock sounds you wanna hear more?
Perfect, fantastic, brilliant!! Thanks!!

I had created the zip for my so old thread now
Here u go flashable (300% of low/normal volume) -> http://vps.rana.sg/x920d/Virt-Delicious-Sense5-MODs/HighVolume_Sense5_Lock_Unlock_Sound.zip
Hi dev it's working great the lock and unlock sound is now audible
Two request if possible
1. Make the lock and unlock sound more loud, around 450-500% total load from current 300% loud.
2. Since you know how to make sounds louder maybe you can make the total sound coming out of the external boom speakers louder. HTC had it loud on 1.27 base but then after that all the other new Roms the sound has become a lot quieter. Maybe you can look it and see or change the Audi library settings for the external boom speakers and have them amplify the sound louder than what current level does.
Awesome!
So does this men were going to see some different ones?
Variety is always welcome

Are you using Root Explorer?
If yes you should get out of sdcard and choose system folder(partition)
can u make these louder? i can only hear when my vol up. thanks :good:
When listening to music the (un) lock sounds were jarringly louder than I was accustomed to. Reverted for now, but they do sound great in general.
These are the sense 4 onex sounds, you can download in op and loud

i've got a problem,
i replaced original two soundfiles with root explorer and then restarted my phone. but the "new" sounds weren't there anymore. the system restored the original soundfiles. this happens every time.. how can i fix this?

use root explorer and first extract the two sound files, then paster them in the right directory, at that time it will ask you to replace the existing files. Say yes and then once copied you need change the permission of the two files, at start these files have RW,RW,R permissions
Change them one by one, long click on the file till you get options and choose permissions, then change them, you need to have RW,R,R permission for both files...
Once you have changed them correctly, you will under the file name the permission will show as rw,r,r ...
after changing both file permissions then reboot your phone and enjoy loud sound..
if this does not work, then check the 3rd or 4th post on page 1 you will get a CWM flash-able .zip file, download it and flash that and you will have loud sound as well...
:good: super
