[Q] ROM Question - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a quick question regarding which ROMs are available to me. I'm using a T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 but there is very little development in that area (less that ten threads). I'd like to know if other GSM ROMs are flushable on the SGH-T889 (T-Mobile) device. I know that this has been the case with other devices in the past. Please advise. Thanks.

No, they are not suited for your device. Only for GT-N7100 HSPA+ version in this forum, not for LTE or Dual Core devices.

The T-Mobile version is HSPA+ and it's quad-core, not dual-core. It is technically LTE capable but it isn't used. It is basically the same as the international version.

No love for LTE GN?

Why does it seem there is much more support for the GSM version compared to the LTE? I keep seeing radios, kernels, ROMS etc released but none for LTE...

Are you looking in the forum that specifically contains the ROMs for CDA nexus?

The GSM version is international and has been out for a month, whereas the LTE version is a U.S.-only release and has only been out for a week. As such, GSM GNex has both the time and user base advantage. I wouldn't worry about it, though. The LTE version is still a Nexus, so there will be plenty of development for it.

Has it been separated yet? I thought they were working on it and it should be done in a few weeks..
Edit: I can't even find the sticky that stated they were separating them.. I'm confused now lol...

Ya there's a bit of development for the LTE, but most of it goes to the GSM because it's been out a month longer and has a much larger user-base.
Yes its a bug in xda app. Doesn't ever refresh sub forums.

No idea where open is looking buy vzw gnex is getting lots of love fast a lot of top devs from other previous vzw devices are chipping in and things are coming along nicely
I wasn't so much talking about the devs as I was mostly referring to the updates such as 4.03 or the new radios etc.. however I didn't know there was another forum for the lte version..

AT&T GSIII On Tmobile 3G/4G

Since the AT&T GSIII) and T-mobile GSIII) are basically the same phone I wounder if the AT&T version will work on T-mobile 3G/4G. Similar to the way the AT&T Galaxy Note works on T-mobile 3G/4G. I was gone probably by the phone out right to use on T-mobile. AT&T has it for 550.00 where as T-mobile has it for 630.00.
I don't think so because att phone doesn't support mobile's aws band but idk if you could flash a modem. I did that on my note but the speeds were horrible. But yea t-mobile is expensive I just paid 680$ for my s3 today at my retail store..
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I don't know, i'm wondering the same thing. the phones are identical. I think it's a very high possibility that there will be rom/radio/ kernal combinations in the future that will cater to t mobile radios that we will easily be able to flash. Just unlocked mine, I think i'm gonna have faith in US GSIII development, identical hardware and eventual full cross compatibility.
As far as I know, the Att has an lte modem and the tmo doesn't. I read that even when tmo launches LTE it won't work with the gs3. But, the tmo has att hspa+ support 1700mhz and should work with att 3g no problem.

The modem for lte or hspa+ is built into the msm8960. In theory they should be interchangeable
Would be interesting experiment for someone with rooted phone to try loading the alternative kernel/baseband then applicable sim.

Think it was done by tsp and failed. Also how do you know the mms8960 works on T-Mobile's 1700 band? So far no evidence.

There is snapdragon s4 whitepaper that states modem can do lte cat3, and dc-hspa+ cat24.
Elsewhere states that the rf for common freqs range 700-2600.
Do not have link handy.but try developer.qualcomm.com
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk 2
What I don't get is why t-mobile would use a different chipset if the 747's msm8960 was compatible with 1700 aws. Especially since t-mobile is spending billions to refarm right now to make all gsm devices compatible with their network. It just doesn't make sense. Until there's confirmation, there are reasons to have doubts.

There are some reports on xda that t999 variant used the msm8260 which is similar chipset but NO LTE.
I would be interested in link wrt tsp attempt at baseband flash, especially which s3 was used.
I find surprising samsung would bother with these build variants.
Does not bode well for FM....

He spoke about trying to flash the t-mobile s3 radio in another thread earlier with no results. Returned his and ordered the t-mobile variant. I ordered a skyrocket myself. So far it doesn't look good. But of course with radios nothing is concrete. All we can do is flash their files and hope something sticks.

Has anyone tried injecting the modem.bin of T999 to the i747M CWM flash ready file and has their phone network unlocked with T-Moblie/Mobilicity/Wind sim?
There are at least two "versions" of the MSM8960, one with the LTE support, one without. The TMO version has the MSM8260A modem, which can be verified with getprop from the terminal. In essence, the TMO version does have the newer S4 (Krait) CPU, but it does lack the LTE hardware. So, no, the phones are not identical. The TMO version does support AT&T HSPA frequencies though, but the ATT version does not (at least in the default configuration) support TMO HSPA frequencies. Whether that can be changed or not, I don't know.
From "getprop" in terminal:
ro.board.platform - msm8960
ril.modem.board - msm8260a
What does the AT&T version say?
When Amazon first posted the AT&T version on their site I read a review about it saying it would work on T-Mobiles network for voice but not data.

What they undoubtedly meant was that you would only get plain old GSM (EDGE, GPRS, etc.) with the AT&T version on T-Mobile, due to the lack of proper frequency support for T-Mobile's network. Still voice and data, just slow as hell by today's standards. However, the T-Mobile version fully supports AT&T frequencies for HSPA (no LTE though).

I been thinking...instead of messing with all that and end up with a brick, why just not sell it on ebay and buy an actual Tmobile one or maybe trade with someone willing to. I would look at the selling price for an AT&T GS3 on ebay and how much would a Tmobile run and if it's not that much difference then pay the difference than end up with a possible brick. Plus I have read some forums where if you flash some things that are not meant for your phone you can even mess up the IME on your phone with no way to flash it back at the moment until someone comes up with a solution for it.
Not trying to be a jerk. Just a friendly reminder that this is not development related and needs to be in general or QA. I would repost there and report your thread to a moderator before the pitch forks come out.

When I put my friends note to t mobile it was the modem you had to flash , if your set on doing it , read a bunch on ways to do the note WITHOUT a custom Rom then find the same files you use in that ( the modem and if I remember right there was one other thing ) then go to the t mobile section in the sgs 3 thread and ask for help finding those files , but do a lot of reading first cause it would be a shame to brick your awesome phone

im looking into this as well, i had the att note and flashed the tmobile modem worked like a charm so now im looking to do same with s3. if i find anything ill let you know

I seriously wouldnt count on it. The two networks run on different technologies. Im pretty sure the hw is different due to this.

Have you guys tried the radios in the dev section by wildchld? I'm not sure it will work either but maybe worth a try. It has a script that backs up current radio and you can revert back. Atleast on T-Mobile s3 it does. Just need to reflash the restore zip to go back to previous radio. Again try at your own risk. There's a huge chance you can brick your device.

I don't think it matters if the Gs3 from T-Mobile doesn't have LTE, I used to have my Galaxy s2 skyrocket with LTE running on T-Mobile 3G/4G off a GS2 Hercules Modem.

Then by all means, give it a shot. I have no problem being proven wrong on stuff like this!
Just remember that was a different phone. And tmobiles radio Im pretty sure was confirmed to NOT support LTE. So they are different.
I'm definately looking forward to hearing someones results after trying! Just do some research on the two radios, and make sure the sw modem is on the same partition for each phone. (I think it will be. But if its not you could end up with serious problems)
Good luck to whomever tries it!

[Q] LTE in the near future. Bad?

Will the switch to LTE in 2013 (I'm assuming to facilitate the MetroPCS merge) impact us Galaxy SIII users negatively? Does our device support an LTE functionality?
Also, if there is to be a switch in networks, would I be able to "switch off" LTE --to the lesser 3G-- to preserve date usage?
It won't impact us negatively. Heck it could even help us as it would lessen traffic on the hspa + bands as more people switch to LTE. And no our devices cannot use LTE.

I'm probably going to have to agree with you, unfortunately. However, T-Mobile recently sent a pamphlet to me with a provided "FAQ" section, claiming that all of their devices will be able to support the LTE. I just didn't believe it, hence the thread's conception. It wouldn't surprise me if I had missed the fine-print-three-font saying "*this excludes the Galaxy SIII". It's still a glimmer of hope, though.
I'll continue researching the matter.
All of their future devices maybe. As of now, the only phone T-Mo has that is LTE capable is the Note 2.
As stated, T-Mo will still support HSPA+ as well as they do now. Gives T-Mo the edge over AT&T from how I see it.

Our devices may be able to support lte depending on the frequency T-Mobile uses for it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Here's a pic to kind of show what the network will look like after refarming and LTE deployment is complete. Our S3s or any other phone that can use the 1900 band shouldn't take any performance hit. In fact, as newer devices are released with LTE support (and after deployment) it will reduce the number of hspa+ devices, leaving even more bandwidth available for hspa use.
It has been confirmed and questioned a number of times, but the T999 radio is not capable of using LTE. Besides, LTE is still far enough off that most of us probably won't see it in our areas till after we've upgraded to a newer phone.
But in the meantime if your areas been upgraded to hspa+42, you may already see speeds that rival current LTE offerings by competitors.

The variant marker (v in this case) does not make the device incompatible. In reality it is identical to the t889 and will be able to share the same ROMs. I have seen certain devices that the Canadian variant has different polarity in the sensors causing a backwards auto rotate but is a quick fix I can put up as a flash able if that is the case. .. but all in all your answer is yes, they are compatible

The V could mean minor hardware differences too. I used to have a SGH-T959V, which is a HSPA+ (4G) version of the HSPA (3G) SGH-T959. Aside from a different modem, the ROMs were not compatible between the two models. Both were US T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S1 phones. Samsung & T-Mobile released the T959 first, then released the T959V months later.
