So I just flashed PA2.99 and now my CWM shows all kinds of paths for when I select choose zip to flash. One of them is zero? When I tried to restore CWM could not find my backups. So once I flashed a different ROM I tried to restore a titanium back up and it could not find backups. I found the SD path that the system and apps are trying to use and moved the files there and now TB worked. So my question is how do I get all my storage/SD card paths correctly defined again.

This is due to the 4.2 update. A device can have multiple users, so it takes everything on the sdcard and puts it into folder 0, because that is the first user (you). Not sure how you can remedy the situation but I figured I'd at least try to explain what/why it happened.
Would that mean that all my apps need to update to the new paths or should I move all my data to the 0 folder?

I guess I could have tried to search it out before installing the ROM but I was unaware of the changes. If there is a way to get everything squared away that would be great.

Problem is, these folders are not populated with anything inside. They're just copies of the same folder but empty.
My questions is, for someone like me who has a full /sdcard, what is the best and quickest way to move all my folder back to /sdcard and get rid of the "0" folders. I have about 7 of them now...

Tried that myself, removing everything from 0 folder effectively deleted everything as far as android was concerned .... the data in sdcard was no longer readable

These "0" Folders should no longer appear if you are using the latest TWRP recovery. I even read that the latest CWM recovery has also fixed this.
When it happened to me, I installed the new ROM (of course, rooted) then used ES File Explorer to CUT the data from the deepest "0" Folder then paste it to the main /sdcard/ place. Afterwards, all my files were on /sdcard/ and the "0" folder as well but it is empty now because I took the data out of it, so I deleted the "0" Folder. I lost nothing of my data this way.
If you are going to try this, then first use ADB to pull the data from /sdcard/ to your PC then try so you can push your data again if anything goes wrong

You don't need ADB, just connect your phone to your PC and open up the storage.
Find the current 0 folder or w/e that your system is currently using. (You can check date it was modified)
Paste it in the /Sdcard and delete everything else.
You said you knew why it was doing it but you kept doing it? Your harsh on yourself, update your recovery.
O and the answer is in 1 of these threads too, probably to same thread you downloaded your ROM from.
so the new CWM, 6.0.1.5 fixes this? I dont have this problem yet because i havent flashed a new rom after 4.2 but I just want to make sure before I do. Thanks.

I think that is because the new OS allows the multiusers.
After all, the clockwork file are is in /data/media/ , with the 0 folder

Download TWRP recovery or update your clockwork recovery. I recommend TWRP, very nice recovery and feel that it's better than clockwork

well I have the newest twrp and I get 0 folders all time when jumping from rom to rom and legacy folders. I just take everything out of them and merge it back into the main folders.... it works perfect (nothing gets lost) my worry is im maybe adding files that are ment to be deleted.. never anything good in the 0 folders just boring app crap but then again I only test other 4.2.1 roms I don't use them. So maybe given time the 0 folders would get big? if so iI woulde love a fix I searched a lot but i keep finding these threads so I thought poswt.
Your not crazy new recovery isn't a fix at all
For me, if i use latet CWM, if i flash from 4.1 to 4.2, the files will stay the same. But if i flash from 4.2 to 4.1, then it start creating 0 folder. But if i flashed 4.2 roms to 4.2 roms, no 0 folder was created.
However, i tried latest TWRP last night, flashing PA 4.2 rom from CNA 4.1, it still create the 0 folder.
Its weird..and annoying

So going from 4.2 to 4.1 on CWM you don't end up with a left over 0folder and legacy driver? I only get them going from 4.2 to 4.1

but then when restoring i get the error that /system could not be restored.
I have searched over many threads on xda and androidcentral for people who experienced similiar problems but to no avail
Changing cwm recovery version doesn't seem to help at all.
Any one have any suggestions please help me out.. I'm pretty lost now spending the last 3 hours trying to recover it..

Use version 5 working
When you upgrade to 4.2 all of the sdcard content is moved from /data/media to /data/media/0
So, the location of your clockworkmod backup is now /data/media/0/clockworkmod
If, you are using an older version of clockworkmod recovery, it will not automatically find the new backup location.
There are two solutions:
1. Flash the latest clockworkmod recovery
2. Manually copy content from /data/media/0 to /data/media using adb

I'm having the same problem. I made a nandroid with CM10.0 and then did a clean wipe, updated the rom to CM10.1, and I've been annoyed by certain things ever since, such as the new file structure.
So I've tried to restore my nandroid of CM10.0 only to find that CWM Recovery can't find it, so I managed to find the backup myself and move it to where CWM stores new nandroid backups, and then I get the same message: "Error while restoring /system!". I updated CWM to 6.0.2.3, the current version, and I still get the same error.
Does anyone know the best way to restore my phone to CM10.0 with my data in the nandroid backup?
MY situation is similar but not quite the same. i did the nandroid backup in clockworkmod. i flashed 10.1. i noticed it moved it to the "zero" folder. so i moved it back. i go back to restore, and here is where things are different. it says its not there. says it can't find a backup.
so i do a backup on 10.1. it creates the backup properly. i check in ES Explorer, both files are there. i go into recovery, it only finds the new one i just created. not the old one.

Since the move to 4.2.x all user data has been moved to /0/data instead of just being in /data
Now, backups shouldn't be any different UNLESS you had the one you want on your SD card before updating. CWM is looking on the original position of the backup but it's probably in the /0/ folder. Move it back to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/<date of backup> and it should find it when you go back to CWM

I tried placing it in the /sdcard/clockworkmod but then cwm wouldn't find the backup, it would just say backup not found. Only after moving it to /data/media then the backup can be seen, but it still gives the error that I'm currently having.

I have the same problem.
CWM 6.0.2.3
saves new backups to data/media/clockworkmod but you cant see it when connected to a computer.
move the backup in the above directory to data/media/0/clockworkmod, this is the new sd card directory.
"Im guessing" that if you want to restore an old nandroid, you will have to adb push it to data/media/clockworkmod/backup.
"also guessing" you have to push the blobs folder as well or it wont restore.
you will see other 0 folders and emulated folders in the root directory,I tried to delete these but it deletes folders in the data/media/0 folder.
these other 0 and emulated folders do not seem to contain actual data files, but are more of a link to the actual data files, the new system type i beleive.

have u checked the blobs folder internal and external sd card?
Which version of CM did you flash. If you flashed one of the nightly builds dated 12/17 and forward you may have flashed 10.1 which is JB 4.2.1. JB 4.2.1 modifies the directory layout to make way for multi-user support and puts the contents of your /sdcard/ folder to /sdcard/0/ which may cause your backups to not be recognized by CWM.

If you have USB MTP functionality you can just connect it to your computer and manually move your CWM folder from /sdcard/0 to /sdcard/
Then simply boot to recovery and CWM should see your list of backups.

I'm on the same boat as the OP. I tried doing what you recommended but the darn files won't copy and it takes ages. I'm helpless. Hating CM10 for ruining my life lol.
Aww don't hate on cm, the new update is causing some pretty big problems, but keep in mind it is only 3 days old. give it some time. =)
There are a couple of possible solutions:
1.) Flash back to stock using ODIN and then reinstall a custom recovery/ROM.
2.) ADB push the backups to the correct folder.
Either option should work just fine. In the future I'd also recommend TWRP as your recovery manager. It has a built in file manager that saved me on this issue by allowing me to copy the data to the correct folders within the recovery module itself.

This is what I figured. However, the backup fails with message "Error while restoring /system".
Tried using CWM 6.0.0.0 (which version is equipped with cm10 stable?) and installing cm10 stable prior to restoring my cm10 backup. It still fails and now I don't know what to do next. Any advice is welcome!
EDIT1: BTW: I need to restore my CM10 to remove my 4*4 pattern... when installing CM10.1, 3*3 pattern must be entered, which I don't know, so I cannot unlock my own phone... :/
EDIT2: Hold on... I did not know about incremental backups and hence I did not copy the blobs folder (within clockworkmod folder)... I will do that now and expect the restore to succeed then.
EDIT3: this works fine, remember to not only copy the folder "backups" but also all the other stuff of the clockworkmod-folder. or make a symlink in /data/media to the old location. works fine.

1. Open terminal, become root by using command 'su'.
2. Enter the following command:
cp -Rv /data/media/0/clockworkmod/backup/[backup dir] /data/media/clockworkmod/backup
eg.:
cp -Rv /data/media/0/clockworkmod/backup/2012-12-12.12.00.44 /data/media/clockworkmod/backup
Reboot to recovery and select the 'backup and restore'. Now there will be another entry with your older backup. Restore it. Enjoy!

So After all of the recent questions and concerns I have seen and answered, I have decided to make a thread to help users understand the new file structure of android 4.2.x. I hope this will help those of you with questions and concerns and make for a smoother transition from 4.1.x and touch wiz roms.
I will break this into three categories........
First I will explain what the file system is and why it is present and how it affects you......
Second is if you haven't yet but are planning on making the jump to 4.2.x.
Third will be if you have already made the jump without doing your homework. (For those of you wondering where your files are, wondering why your sd card was formatted, or cant find your recovery backups..... This section is for you!!)
Section 1.)
What is the new file system and what the hell is this /0 folder?
With Android 4.2, Google introduced multiple users as a new feature. In order to accommodate multiple users, Google is now giving each user their own folder for storage. What happens is 4.2 uses an emulator to make different users and uses the /0 folder as the default users storage on the sd card. It doesn't recognize anything on the root of the sd card only whats in /0. To support multi-user capabilities this will be the norm... for each user, there will be a sequentially numbered folder in /data/media (/data/media/0, /data/media/1)...
And for each user, within Android, this will be symlinked to /sdcard & /storage/sdcard0... for user 1, /sdcard = /storage/sdcard0 = /data/media/0... for user 2, /sdcard = /storage/sdcard0 = /data/media/0...
These are emulated storage points... /data/media/0 = /storage/emulated/0, /data/media/1 = /storage/emulated/1
Without root access, each user will just see /sdcard/ and will not be able to access the other emulated storage points...
In the recovery mode, however, /sdcard is mapped to /data/media which is why you need to navigate to the "0" folder to see your files!
So in order to access your internal storage files they will be in data/media/0. So for example to access the backup location In titanium backup after you flash navigate to data/media/0/TitaniumBackup. (Thanks to ktetreault)
That being said, If you already flashed a 4.2 rom without preparation, your files aren't lost they are just inaccessible they are just not in the proper place for 4.2 to see them.
So now that we have all the technical stuff out of the way...... Lets get into how to either prevent or fix this issue.
Section 2.)
Preparing to flash a 4.2 rom from a touch wiz rom or an aosp 4.1.x based rom.
Okay, so you have touch wiz or aosp 4.1.x of some sort and your ready to try out the goodness of 4.2?
First backup your ext sd card to your pc or if a pc is unavailable (and your willing to take a risk) use a file explorer on your phone such as Es file explorer from the market to transfer the contents of the ext sd card to your internal sd card. I highly suggest avoiding using the phone as some hiccups can occur. I have done it successfully myself but have heard others who have lost their files during transfer because they left the app while it was transferring. If you do use this method DO NOT LEAVE THE APP UNTIL THE FILE TRANSFER IS COMPLETE.
Second Format your ext sd card so we have a clean slate to work with as this will help tremendously to avoid any headaches.
Third Install the latest recovery of your choice. The reason for this is that the older recoveries are not updated for 4.2 and will continuously create a new /0 folder every time you flash a new rom. Follow the instructions to install in the applicable thread.

Fourth Flash the 4.2 rom of your choosing per the instructions of the developers OP in their thread.
Set your phone up as usual and then restore the files from your backup on your pc or move them back from the internal sd card using es file explorer again. Keep in mind that the /0 folder is your new sd card storage. Now you are good to go and enjoy the new features and benefits of 4.2 and not have to search for your files :good:
Section 3.)
Okay so you got overly excited and flashed a 4.2 rom........ OMG!!! All my files are gone!!!! I can't restore any backups and all my precious files have disappeared!! Why was my sd card formatted?????
Relax.... Your files didn't go any where they are exactly how you left them you just can't see them.....
I will walk you thru 4 easy steps to get your files back and put you back on track.
First Make sure you have the latest recovery of your choice. If needed refer to the links posted in section 1. If you don't do this you will see a duplicate /0 folder created every time you flash a new 4.2 rom.
Second You won't be able to find your backups thru recovery. The easiest method I found is to download any touch wiz rom. Wipe your phone completely and then flash the touch wiz rom you downloaded. Reboot and go thru the setup and what not.
Third Now install es file explorer or the app of your choice. Next copy everything from the root of the sd card into the /0 folder that 4.2 had created oh so nicely for you.
Fourth Reboot into recovery and re-flash the 4.2 rom you began with. After going thru the initial rom setup you will see that are of your files are back intact and ready for you to access.
Hopefully this has helped those of you with questions and concerns about upgrading to 4.2.x. If i missed anything please feel free to let me know and ill include it here or address any further questions.

So far i have backed up apps+data with titanium backup, and im ready to flash liquid smooth ROM using twrp. I just want to know if after flashing my internal storage contents will still be there and i will be able to restore apps with tb.

No you shouldn't be affected bud I would only suggest getting an sd card just to backup anything important in case of a freak error during flashing or accidental wiping of internal sd.

Yes, but you will have to set the backup location In titanium backup after you flash to data/media/0/TitaniumBackup

this was of great help
When I went to 4.2.1 I did not understand the file system change. I had to use my backup phone for 5 days before I finally got my SMSand MMS and Launcher Pro restored.
Then I wiped and flashed again and it created a new "0" directory. I have been afraid to do anything but dirty flash since.
This finally explains it all and I feel confident in wiping again.

Yup that will work but quite an annoying work around Lol that's why I showed you guys how to prevent this or fix it so this won't be needed every time you need a file

Hey, quick question, I bounced off another ROM onto liquidsmooth without updating my recovery and ended up with an extra '0' folder, can I move my files out of there and delete it safely?

Yup no problem just delete the innermost one without your files and you will be good to go.
