Howdy All!
You probably don't know, but I am (or was until recently) the dev over at MIUI_Au. About a month ago, MIUI shipped out engineering samples of their MI-One device. All the 'third party' translation effort leaders (except, sadly, our own XJ), including me, received a unit (as well as another 500 lucky Chinese users who had to 'win' one).
So I am in possession of an MI-One, which comes with MIUI as standard (obviously).
The world of Android (and indeed XDA as a whole) wouldn't be what it is unless people had ambition.
MIUI will release the M1 eventually, and it will be priced at around half that of the Evo3D ($350 USD).
What follows seems only logical, then.
I know nothing about porting, by the way. So...the main question: Is anyone game enough to help (or rather me help anyone) with getting a head start on a port?
Cheers,
Josh.
Hi Josh,
At first I thought that Sense can be ported to the Galaxy S for example and coming from a Windows mobile device world to Android this didn't seem impossible. Unfortunately some DEVs tried it but No BT, WiFi etc. It is really hard to port Sense to non-HTC devices because of hardware compatibility issue and the lack of drivers. Hell, it's hard to port from Desire HD to Desire.... That's why at that time I bought the Desire and not the Galaxy S. Sense makes Android complete and after trying AOSP or MIUI, I always found myself returning to sense (720p recording + fully functional). Even if it's slower then other ROMS.

It's funny to see how different are we all, and "vive la difference". Few days ago I tried again Sense (3.0 and 3.5), and guess what? I came back without any doubt to XJ MIUI ! That ROM really rocks.
Good luck.

Agree, even if porting is possible drivers are a great issue. Maybe its an option to port just the rosie.apk and the framework? (just an idea, my knowledge on this subject is very limit too...)

One of the major differences in this situation is that the MI-One is built with same SOC as the Evo3D/Sensation - the MSM8660. All bluetooth, wifi, gps, GPU-related, CPU-related and mmc and storage related drivers would likely be the same (or at least very similar).
It isn't like porting it to a device which has a completely different set of components.
Josh.

So am i. After a while sense starts to show its flaws. Sense is a good experience, but stock is the pure android experience ! And with launcher pro and sense clock (the sense clock is the best thing i've seen!) i've built a better experience than sense itself. This days there're widgets and launcher skins to everything. You have to face it, sense is all about the homescreen

Well, not really. Acctually, I really don't like some of the new widgets. The clock, for example - I much prefer the old one which flipped faster.
But also, Sense ROMs are about proper facebook contact synching, synching with outlook and tethering that works well. All of this works out of the box, and all of it is done in style.
Anyway, it is a little off topic.
Kindly respond to the original question if you are interested, developers.
Hi,
well if MI-One same as EVO 3D/Sensation (partition layout/hw/chipset version) then there is no problem, same as HD2 and Desire...both are too different devices (windows/android) but now we have fully working android for both devices even Nexus One *AOSP* also have almost fully working Sense ROM...maybe this is wrong section for answer try Sensation/EVO 3D dev section...
Mi-One would be awesome with a sense rom imo.

Fair Dibs.
You are probably right - I only posted in the Desire section out of habit. I just updated the index and went from their. Well, that, and I know that there are some very skilled developers here.
You did raise an interesting point though: While the hardware is quite similar, the partition scheme is much more complicated (with two system partitions).
Josh
2? Why?

Anyway, it can be done. But without owning the device, it's impossible to test out ideas. Partition layouts are the simple part. Nothing some smart symlinking can't correct.

Am from UK were would be best to buy one of these phones from?
I've read a news article on Pulse that this phone won't have much developer support due to Samsung keeping some files locked out for developer support, and that Cyanogenmod won't be developing on this phone due to that.

I don't understand the situation fully, but it sounds like Samsung has committed to releasing the source, so I am hoping that means it will get Cyanogenmod and good dev support.

Interesting..hate Touchwiz but it does have some nice features.

This might be a dumb question, I've just begun researching this but it concerns development. I'm considering jumping from my Verizon contract to AT&T for this phone, based on the virtual certainty that the Verizon version will have a locked bootloader. Are AT&T phones locked on a case by case basis, or is it already a given that this phone will release with devs able to mess with it? I don't want to play a waiting game like the S3 on Verizon despite their huge number of users.
From my understanding there will be NO cm support on any further samsung devices..But then I seen this? so who knows...lol

Pretty sure that is a port, not the actual CM team doing the work
i know cm10 is cool but i dont understand why people would want this on the note 2 since all the features that make the note 2 are TW related but thats just me.

Personally I agree, but this is xda and people will want to mod. I'll be rooting, but I doubt I'll flash any custom ROM's.
My order is in and I agree,
UNLESS...the many features including the S Pen etc. are ported to new ROMS I don't think I'll flash...
BTW ...anyone know of a cure for ORD

oh i will be doing the same ill flash customs roms just TW ones as i want to keep the features like spen and all that jazz.
on older devices cm was awesome cause it was fast but now as the phones are more powerful then ever i dont see a need to run them. just me tho
Same. I don't think I'll be flashing any Non-TW ROM on the Note 2. I've been flashing AOKP and CM10 on the Note 1 so I've been missing the TW S-Pen features.
This is why im glad i got the N7100 model, just sayin

Pretty much all I know is what I read on rootzwiki, but I thought that they were not going to drop all Samsung devices, but only the ones that used Exynos CPU's due to inadequate source or documentation or something. But then I think Samsung has committed to releasing this, so hopefully that means Cyanogenmod will not drop them anymore, but I haven't heard anything official.

I have to admit a lot of the features they added do seem genuinely useful, but I still think I would give them up for Cyanogenmod.
It is my understanding (from what I have read about the Note 1, etc) that android natively supports stylus input since ICS, and so it should be able to still work in Cyanogenmod. It is just that there are very few apps that really make use of it besides the ones from Samsung, Hopefully this will improve over time though.
I am with you guys, I personally will root the device and debloat it for now... But stock rom right now seems to be very nice..lol...
We will have alot of great roms coming out either way with or without cm support. I know a couple devolpers coming here shortly and there work is awesome.
There will be plenty of support. I will be working on a few things myself once I get the device. I helped start the CM development in the original note.
And the reason why we run AOSP vs all the craptastic useless stuff Samsung adds its because I personally like vanilla Google. Samsung changes to much. Android in stock form is beautiful. Just my opinion not trying to start a flame war.
If I run stock it will be stripped down deodexed and debloated likke a mofo.
If I decode to build an device tree and attempt to build CM I will. With the open support from Samsung it won't be difficult.
I know of a few developers coming this way also we will have plenty of support I'm sure

Normally I agree, and my S3 i definitely agree. But this phone is built around samsungs incorporation of the s-pen and related features. If AOKP roms ignore the s-pen, theyre useless to me.. why even get this phone then?
I think the most popular roms on this phone will be stock based, debloated and feature rich roms, much like Ariel rom for the ATT Galaxy s3 out now.

Touchwiz is hideous.
Don't get me wrong, Samsung has done some great things with the multitask and S-pen, but AOSP Jellybean makes Touchwiz look like a featurephone UI from 2003.

This is exactly how I feel about it. I will root it, but I'm going to take my time about flashing a custom ROM. I want the full functionality of that stylus as designed - as an old Palm girl, this is one of the main reasons I'm getting the Note 2. That plus the excellent GPS - coming from a woefully awful Captivate GPS. I had a Garmin iQue 3600, the Palm OS GPS unit, and am frankly spoiled by that integration. If only Garmin hadn't given up like that.....
so i was just wondering is there going to be any touchwiz port from galaxy s4/s3 to hox?
, and i am not asking for a cm rom with mrmadd theme or a launcher, but an solid touchwiz port.
and its not like why would i want a touchwiz port or that it sucks , but its quite the contrary why shouldnt we have it
i would totaly enjoy it and i know many of us would ..

My brother has owned a S3 device at the time I owned my One x . so here couple of points I would like to share
1-My brother always liked the Sense ROMs and disliked the touchwizy thing ,so people witth sense phones (HTC) are always lucky to have sense experience and not the wizzytouch thing
2-porting a touchwiz isnt that hard in my opinion , but porting to our device here has no need because we already have the goodness of the best of 2 worlds the Sense part which i consider to be the best Interface we had from all phone companies and AOSP part which has been ported successfully to our device

No.
NO Samsung device has the Tegra chipset, and unlike many Android open-source UI's the likes of Sense and Touchwiz are proprietary with no access to source from which to even base a port.
Hmm so that means no touchwiz port will ever be availible on our devices thats sad , and i know that sense is realy on a whole better level than touchwiz but i just kinda thought that i might some time enjoy a funny-like-toy rom to play with in free time anyway thanks guys for your answers.

Im looking forward to upgrade from my HTC One X, the reason being that its development has come to a dead-end, Almost no more custom ROMs, So Im thinking of buying either the Xperia Z or the Samsung Galaxy Note II. Both are identical devices, Im a custom ROM junkie and a device having active development is a must for me, and I plan on keeping this device for me for quite some time. Which device would you suggest? Note 2 or Xperia Z? Thanks.

Easy to answer, cause the versatility of the N2 is unbeatable at the moment only thinking of S-Pen and external storage. Look, there is a Rom with the features of the Xperia Z, can you imagine N2 features on the Xperia? Impossible.
New custom roms are in development all over the world and there is a great challenge coming up in the next weeks/months: Android 4.4.2 Touchwiz roms. Even for Android 5 I see roms in the future. :good:

Well, it is a completely different device, looking better, smaller screen, no additional sd card, full HD, not an easy choice as far as you have never put your hands on a N2.... but I think you won't find anybody here to change his N2 to this Sony
even if someone would donate a Sony to me, I would give it away immediatly.

Need Rom Touch Wiz based Kitkat or 4.3 :/
Possible?
Not possible... if you can't live without dual SIM and still want the Kitkat goodies, you can always download Google's apps on Play Store and apply some cosmetic mods to make your stock ROM feels a lot like Kitkat.

Its possible actually..but no devs today i think will take interest to develop/port the whole OEM...it will not just be buggy..but also alot of time consuming..as all it needed is a base rom and port rom of same android versions (we got 4.4.2 cm11 as base already),there is a mere possibility to do this..
But i dont think anyone will do that mahn..
#reference from thread "port OEM's of same android version", many cases shows successful results (at least OP do)....

Dude he was talking about "Touchwiz-based" Kitkat. Basically a CM11 on stock ROM. This is like wearing shoes on your head. Not possible.
But what you're talking about is "Kitkat-based" Touchwiz, which is possible but not feasible due to massive amount of work needed to convert the whole Touchwiz framework to Android 4.4 API...
Even Samsung itself (which is a giant company with hundreds if not thousands of coders) still need 3 months to port Note 3 Touchwiz to Kitkat... with our manpower here (about 4 active developers) this will take forever..
