[q] afraid to do anything now! - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I was on Stock T999UVALH2
Rooted and all was fine
A few months later I did the small update to T999UVALH4
Again all was good.
Did the Update to the 4.1.1 OTA and phone went into a boot loop! (for a long time and while I was trying to do
different things to try to recover the phone.) I tried a whole bunch of stuff, and after trying to get into download mode,
and missing it, the phone booted into a screen that was saying it was updating file x of 25x files and counted till the last update file, and rebooted to a screen asking me to choose which launcher to use.
I chose what I was then using, and all the stuff came up, and the NEW rom was running! T999UVDLJA
Build # JRO03L.T999UVDLJA
I began having weird issues, and it was recommended I clean the Dalvic Cache.
Well, I cleared the cache with CWM and the darn thing started counting, and upgrading all over again! WTF?
I don't know what/why it did, but it rebooted and all was like before the cleaning. I have a few more stuff that just do not seem right, but I am afraid to "monkey around" with anything till someone can tell me what was happening (re flashing the rom by itself?) and what I should do to stop this behavior, or if that is a normal thing. I once cleared the cache, on another android HTC, and it just cleared the cache and rebooted.
Maybe some of our "Gurus" can tell me what I should do, if anything.
Thanks to all for any advice that might be forthcoming!
Aloha!

What recovery are you using?

My Recovery
CWM - based Recovery v5.5.0.4

So, you did the jellybean update without the stock recovery, yes? That's the trouble.

I'd flash a rooted jellybean Rom; since you have clockwork.
But you could go back to stock and then update

?
I was on a stock rom, and folowed all the "updates" as was said that it was necessary for jelleybean...

Just so I don't grab the wrong thing again,
Would you , per chance, have a link to a rooted JB Rom?
Thanks!

Here is the link to the stock JB rooted rom, it's also safe from triggering the counter if you are worried about that stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
Just flash it from Odin and you will even keep all your apps and such too.

odin flash with the jelly bean .tar image, bone stock.
then root with chains cf auto root (OG dev section)
then download the new clockwork mod touch 6.0.1.2 ..... put it on the root (meaning in no sub-directory, or in no other folders) of your internal sd card, and rename it to cwm6....
download an app called terminal emulator, open it, type "su" without quotes, then grant the app root access, then run these commands, hitting enter after each one:
dd if=/sdcard/cwm6.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery (hit enter...and you will see an output, xxx data transferred in xxx seconds blah blah)
reboot recovery (hit enter again. oops. phone rebooted....... into your new recovery)
good luck

wait, isn't it normal for the "android is upgrading/optimizing x of y apps" to appear after clearing cache? That usually happens when I clean my cache.
As for the other problems with this rom, i guess you should Odin using the method that doesn't trip your flash counter, as stated above
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

That's normal. It will happen every time it has to rebuild dalvik cache.
Sounds to me like you need to backup, wipe data and start fresh and clean.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

I have the same thing happening to me each time I clear cache (optimizing x apps of y), that's completely normal. As to other problems that you said are happening just flash root66, rooted stock 4.1.1 rom, using odin and everything should be good.
Good luck

[Q] New ICS official Update Can't Get Past Reboot in CWM

I was running stock rooted G.B. 2.3.6 and just to see what would happen (I kinda knew already) I did the official upgrade to the ICS 4.0.3. Of course it went from UVKL1 to UVLE1 and I had backed everything up with Titanium Backup and also with Rom Manager. I lost root, because I did a factory reset because it wouldn't install the first 2 times. Oh, I was doing it through Kies. I wanted to do it by the book sort of.So after the install I tried to get root again but when I got into CWM recovery I had no functions working except reboot. No update.zip from sd, or anything else. I could scroll up and down and stop on the different options but when I pushed the button to make the choice it jumped back to reboot and that is all I can get. I rebooted and retried 4 or 5 times and same thing. So, now what ? I like the 4.0.3 but hate the massive amount of bloat and the ads and f**ked up notification popup/ads. I want my root back. I would be willing to start fresh again with a good, fast, everything works, custom ICS but don't know which to choose. that is one of the reasons why I tried this "official" upgrade. Again, as always, Thanks in advance for everyone who helps anyone here on XDA. K.K.-Out

Thanks ToledoG28, I tried that link and it wasn't a good page. I appreciate the effort. Maybe you could double check it and let me know.
OP: Here's CWM 5.0.2.6. After flashing and once youre back into your phone, you can install ROM manager and upgrade to whatever you want. Push this via Odin.
This happened to me. I had just had to wipe the cache in recovery and it booted. I would try that first
You have to use darkside wipe and darkside cache wipe. The regular recovery wipe isn't working properly.
You just need to Odin ics.

Guys he can't get into recovery. How can he flash super wipe etc if he can't? And how will odining ics fix that? He needs to odin the recovery i posted.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
I got it solved you guys. Thanks to all of you. I did another factory reset, and then found the actual T989 Hercules .tar file (the one I used was from a post for ICS from November or December and was actually an Infuse tar file.) and reinstalled it. I was able to after I got cwm recovery old style not touch. Touch was what was giving me problems. So I Odin the new Hercules.tar and then rereinstalled Superuser zip and everything went smooth. The only thing I am seeing as a problem is the phone won't sleep. If I have the phone plugged in, I can't shut it off. It wants to immediately turn itself back on. I like to have it shut down and charge at night sometimes. But it won't let me. Any ideas? Thanks again everybody.

[Q] CM10 has no root access

I have been researching all day trying to figure out how to get CM10 root to work properly. Each time I install it all of the features work fine, but I lack root access. I am able to root using the stock rom whether it be by using cwm or flashing using odin. Each time that I flash I always make sure to clear cache, do factory reset, and wipe the Dalvik cache. I have also attempted to use twrp instead of cwm, that yielded a bit different results; it would notify me when wifi was available and I had the CM updater, which I did'nt have before.
In all cases root access has been missing though. As far as I know CM had root access built in so I'm a bit confused as to what I can do. Any suggestions on what to do would be great, and if you need more information feel free to ask.
Thank you,
SqueakyP

Yes, I have the latest superuser, also tried getting the latest supersu. I only used one manager at a time. Both of them were unable to update the su binary due to lacking root access.
I am also unable to use the "su" command in terminal due to access being denied

So I should just flash the rom without doing factory reset beforehand?
root the phone.
Which should give you clockwork.
Install Rom manager.
Download the latest cm10 nightly
Flash.

When installing using rom manager should I leave "wipe data & cache" checked or unchecked?
No. but you may need to boot into recovery and manually wipe the cache and davlik cache. I believe wipe data does a factory reset.
...I would download the zip file from get.cm and install it from recovery rather than from clockwork in Android as I've had MUCH better success installing ROM's that way but that's me...
It's a miracle! I installed cm10 using rom manager and left the wipe data and cache box unchecked. Then when it tried to boot it would stay at the boot logo, left it for about 10 min. Then I cleared only the cache; got the same results. Then I used the wipe data/factory reset option cwm recovery, flashed cm10, and then gapps. After that it booted up and surprisingly enough it was rooted.
Since the rooting was successfully done even though I wiped the data prior to install there are only a few possibilities as to why this happened:
I had the wrong zip to flash (I obtained it from the official posting for the sgh-t999 todays nightly build)
I was using the wrong cwm recovery (T-mobile S3 touch cwm obtained via cwm website)
Or I just needed to flash twice with wipes in-between to ensure that no files were left over from the stock rom.
Either way, it's working now and I'm glad, thanks for the help c:

(Q) Been Gone For Some Time...???

I was wondering how in the hell do i get updated to all the new updates and such.
Currently i'm rooted with Twrp 2.3.1.0, i used the toolkit back some time ago and game me the option to basically install custom roms and such but never did anything except for a kernel.
So my question is Im still on LJC, 4.1.1, and i'm sick of the pop ups for the install update, and i know its going to fail so i'd figure can i just install a custom rom and it will take care of all that crap like for instance just go ahead and start fresh and install CyanogenMod?

When you say CM 10 I'm assuming you're referring to CM 10.1? If so make sure your using the correct gapps and if you still face issues I suggest redownloading the ROM and gapps through Goomanager, make sure the MD5 match up, and then fully wipe and flash again. Keep me updated.

Ok I see what you're doing. My brother had a similar problem and there seems to be something wrong with the kernel script not running through properly and to fix this you will need to perform a factory reset as the OP instructs BUT I would try it twice. Once before the flash and another after the flash. Try it and if that doesn't work try the same steps with a 3rd party kernel. Flashing a kernel after the ROM is not recommended but if it helps to boot up the phone then you'll know it was the stock kernel. Let me know

Does it bootloop...or have you just been impatient? 1st boots of a new ROM can take a while.
Presuming it is stuck at boot splash...either an unstable build, or a corrupt download are possible. Verify the MD5 of your downloads.

Every device handles things differently, including first boot up times. It can take anywhere from 5-10min. So don't worry about how short Josh's boot up time was in his video. I highly suggest you:
1) Wipe system, data, cache/dalvik 3x
2) flash ROM and Gapps
3) Go back and perform a "factory reset" 3x
4) Reboot
5) Let phone sit at most 15min.
Just do this one final time exactly as instructed and assuming you've tried earlier nighties, if it doesn't boot up by 15 min then you'll know it's the phone and NOT you.

[Q] My S3 is stuck on the logo after using CWM. Odin not working please help

Alright, im not completely new to rooting but I have encountered a new problem.
I rooted my phone through odin (galaxy s3 T999), had some hiccups with that so I ended up downloading the stock rom tar and reflashed using that, problem solved good to go still rooted. awesome.
So, I attempted to flash the cyanogen rom using clockwork mod. it wouldn't come past the load screen, went into clockwork mod to recover my backup but for some reason it wouldn't let me access the SD card to get it. next thought was to go back to odin and flash the same file I used previously to get back to where I was, for some reason this is not working, I can get to download, use odin to flash it, says success and all that, then upoon rebooting it stays at the Samsung loading screen.
So from there I went and downloaded the GS3 toolkit and tried all of their recovery files, all having the same issue. about 18 flashes later I tried reformatting from the phone itself, same issue with the samsung logo being stuck. And now, I am currently baffled, anyone wanna help me out? I have a feeling it has something to do with the .pit option on odin, but I am not that advanced and its just a hunch. so...thanks in advance guys!
So I understand not to touch pit, roger, reading other posts makes that clear, but still cant find a fix, the top right of my download says
ODIN MODE
Product Name SGH-T999
Custom Binary yes: 19 counts
Current Binary Samsung Offical
System Status Custom
Qualcomm secureboot Enable
Okay, what is the current state of the device?

tried to factory reset and it does the same logo stuck business. That was the last thing i tried after attempting to back up and reflash numerous times. tried flashing again recently, it will install CWM if it is attached to the rom but still gets stuck on the logo. tried re installing odin as well, it is working as usual, starts, restarts the phone, sits awhile, success. then i restart the phone and never get past logo.
I would do what Doc said.

When flashing a new rom, you have to do a full wipe or youll run into problems like you are currently having.
If you dont know what a full wipe is, then stop what you are doing and put your phone down. Just about every rom thread here on xda explains what a full wipe is, it will be in the first post of the thread.
Like I said, find a rom you like in the t-999 section and flash it after doing a full wipe.

Looked it up, that is what I do by default, didn't know thats what was considered a full wipe, just tried it with similar results, didn't know about the dalvik cache though. im on a work computer so I cannot currently DL a new rom from the site, I hope thats what the issue is, but I still cannot see why my other ones would suddenly not work.

tried to factory reset and it does the same logo stuck business.

I'm just not sure what you mean by it installing CWM attached to a Rom? Recoveries shouldn't be included with a Rom.
Odin flash the root66 firmware, then reboot to STOCK recovery and factory reset. This will wipe all user data, including your internal sd card. Then try rebooting again.

Aroma only installs selected apks not system files

When I try to install Hyperdrive rom latest release 15 I select all i want in the aroma but then it starts to install only the apps i chose. It is not installing any of the mandatory system files which makes sense why it installs in like 10 seconds.. I wipe everything sys, delvik cache, cache, data.. using TWRP 2.7.0.1
please help me
This is also happening when I try to install Wicked Rom so ANY suggestions would be awesome. I'm probably going to return to stock and then flash new rom
after reinstalling stock firmware through odin and then trying to install a custom rom same thing is still happening so im guessing i should try and go to stock and than completely wipe everything and then try from there?
I'd install a ROM that doesn't have an aroma installer. Then install the one you want with aroma.

After successfully installing stock and TWRP recovery 2.7.0.1
I took your advice and tried install gpe rom and still after rebooting i just get a black boot screen samsung galaxy s4 screen
Is there more i could wipe like a partition that is still bad maybe?
I'm going to go to stock again but this time with odin 3.07 not what i was using which was a much older odin and im going to then install a custom recovery and root and please do tell me your favorite recovery im probably gonna try oudhs cwm and then ill see if i run into problems installing roms.
The main problem is the rom likes to install all its apk options for example adobe reader or samsung music app but it will NOT install any mandatory system files which make the phone work.
after i get stock i also wipe data factory reset in stock recovery which delete everything which is fine i knew it would.
This time i'll also be resetting the flash counter which i havent done
Have you tried using clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager?

I haven't but i will try. At the moment i am at stock firmware and I would like to know what my filesystem should look like.. When I go into just "/" section before sdcard it shows me lots of folders some looking unnessary and maybe in the way of installing my rom normally View attachment 2650548

Could this be a bootloader issue or something with my filesystem because I can tell these roms are all avoiding like half of their installation. They should be extracting more files and take more than 20 seconds to install
Which bootloader do you have?

How do I see what kind of bootloader i have i search google and im still unsure.
And do you think i could try deleting everything in my filesystem and then odin stock flash and then try to flash rom?
In settings, about phone what is your baseband? Mine for example is FNB4.

Reinstalling stock for 4th time when i get it up ill give you that baseband version.
I was looking on Odin at this Nand erase all and i googled alot and looked around but i don't think its useful in my case so i wont check it
there was a thread saying that you could repair your phone if your data was set to a read only not write but i checked with adbshell mount and all my stuff is rw so im good there..
I haven't ever had a problem where rom doesn't fully install..
I was minding my own business on GPe rom from Kot94h and it was good but i decided hmm this has been my daily driver for queit some time ill switch to hyper drive and bamm i realize stuff isn't going right.
My Baseband Version is M919UVUAMDL
on Android 4.2.2
I feel like I've tried every trick in the book with no success
I'm wondering if it's the team win recovery. I'd try cwm.

I've tried CWM CWM-oudhs thing and ive tried team win.
for now im going to run stock and restore my stuff but hopefully i can get to the bottom of this
I can't think of where the source of the problem is.
I find it interesting how while an app installs i see it installing like system/app/blahblah.apk and that is like the first thing it starts to install
i think if i can remember a rom usually does system/framwork or something along those lines first
I have also MD5 checked all my files and they are all perfectly matching
Any Ideas?
I have this idea to try and erase every file on my device and then flash a room is that even possible
Could someone download root file explorer and go to their "/" and just snap a pic of the folders i want to compare your folders properties for example one of mine say rwxr-xr-x
Or i have another idea.
Is it possible to reformat my system partition with odin maybe with a PIT file??
Think, why would a rom skip installation of system files? It looks like it blazes through the installation after installing a few system apps
