[Q] CM10 has no root access - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I have been researching all day trying to figure out how to get CM10 root to work properly. Each time I install it all of the features work fine, but I lack root access. I am able to root using the stock rom whether it be by using cwm or flashing using odin. Each time that I flash I always make sure to clear cache, do factory reset, and wipe the Dalvik cache. I have also attempted to use twrp instead of cwm, that yielded a bit different results; it would notify me when wifi was available and I had the CM updater, which I did'nt have before.
In all cases root access has been missing though. As far as I know CM had root access built in so I'm a bit confused as to what I can do. Any suggestions on what to do would be great, and if you need more information feel free to ask.
Thank you,
SqueakyP

Have you tried updating the binary for super user/super su?

Yes, I have the latest superuser, also tried getting the latest supersu. I only used one manager at a time. Both of them were unable to update the su binary due to lacking root access.
I am also unable to use the "su" command in terminal due to access being denied

Stop doing a factory reset. It's why you are losing root

So I should just flash the rom without doing factory reset beforehand?

root the phone.
Which should give you clockwork.
Install Rom manager.
Download the latest cm10 nightly
Flash.

You've already made your phone compatible with cm10 by factory resetting once.
But the order you are trying to do things in is stealing your root access.

When installing using rom manager should I leave "wipe data & cache" checked or unchecked?

No. but you may need to boot into recovery and manually wipe the cache and davlik cache. I believe wipe data does a factory reset.
...I would download the zip file from get.cm and install it from recovery rather than from clockwork in Android as I've had MUCH better success installing ROM's that way but that's me...

It's a miracle! I installed cm10 using rom manager and left the wipe data and cache box unchecked. Then when it tried to boot it would stay at the boot logo, left it for about 10 min. Then I cleared only the cache; got the same results. Then I used the wipe data/factory reset option cwm recovery, flashed cm10, and then gapps. After that it booted up and surprisingly enough it was rooted.
Since the rooting was successfully done even though I wiped the data prior to install there are only a few possibilities as to why this happened:
I had the wrong zip to flash (I obtained it from the official posting for the sgh-t999 todays nightly build)
I was using the wrong cwm recovery (T-mobile S3 touch cwm obtained via cwm website)
Or I just needed to flash twice with wipes in-between to ensure that no files were left over from the stock rom.
Either way, it's working now and I'm glad, thanks for the help c:

Yeah, I much prefer doing it manually only using CWM recovery, I used to use it on my triumph, so all the problems I was having blew me away.

Do exactly what the Dev told you in his post. Install a Safe kernal. DL your file put it on your device. make a backup. do a full wipe(usually calikulin's wipe all is perfect) now flash new rom. flash different kernal(unless it tells you not to) if you desire and then flash your modem if its not there. If you have no idea what you are doing. READ READ READ. Ive done a decent amount of flashing over the past 2 years and i still read tons of posts to include the first couple pages and the last couple pages.
That rom will also have bugs and isn't complete since he is still working on porting everything over from JB.
No you don't. The only think you have to worry about is being on a safe recovery. Agats kernel has a safe recovery included. The kuban kernel also includes a safe recovery as well. (included to prevent confusion) The reason why you need a safe recovery is because in the past people have bricked their phones when wiping data. You could also use the el26/29 kernel packed with clockworkmod recovery v5 to be extra safe. Once you enter recovery mode with a safe recovery or cwm5 all you have to do is wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache and you should be fine to flash cm10. You don't have to flash older versions because the newer ones have everything the older ones have. They also have bug fixes. There is no reason to flash alpha 1, 2, ect unless you just want to see how it works.
Just flash the latest version.

You don't need to start with Alpha 1, just follow the directions on the original post (first post on the first page) after downloading the alpha 5.3 file, gapps, and any other files it recommends.

my 3g isn't working... i only get 1x. what do i need to do to fix this.
What version did you flash? If it was a nightly I wouldn't be too worried about it cause sometimes they work and sometimes they have bugs because they sometimes contain experimental code. Also try toggling airplane mode and see if that helps.

Also when you say you wiped everything, that means that you wiped data/factory reset, wipe cache x2, wipe dalvik x2, then flash rom?

[q] afraid to do anything now!

I was on Stock T999UVALH2
Rooted and all was fine
A few months later I did the small update to T999UVALH4
Again all was good.
Did the Update to the 4.1.1 OTA and phone went into a boot loop! (for a long time and while I was trying to do
different things to try to recover the phone.) I tried a whole bunch of stuff, and after trying to get into download mode,
and missing it, the phone booted into a screen that was saying it was updating file x of 25x files and counted till the last update file, and rebooted to a screen asking me to choose which launcher to use.
I chose what I was then using, and all the stuff came up, and the NEW rom was running! T999UVDLJA
Build # JRO03L.T999UVDLJA
I began having weird issues, and it was recommended I clean the Dalvic Cache.
Well, I cleared the cache with CWM and the darn thing started counting, and upgrading all over again! WTF?
I don't know what/why it did, but it rebooted and all was like before the cleaning. I have a few more stuff that just do not seem right, but I am afraid to "monkey around" with anything till someone can tell me what was happening (re flashing the rom by itself?) and what I should do to stop this behavior, or if that is a normal thing. I once cleared the cache, on another android HTC, and it just cleared the cache and rebooted.
Maybe some of our "Gurus" can tell me what I should do, if anything.
Thanks to all for any advice that might be forthcoming!
Aloha!

I was on a stock rom, and folowed all the "updates" as was said that it was necessary for jelleybean...
Just so I don't grab the wrong thing again,
Would you , per chance, have a link to a rooted JB Rom?
Thanks!
Here is the link to the stock JB rooted rom, it's also safe from triggering the counter if you are worried about that stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
Just flash it from Odin and you will even keep all your apps and such too.
odin flash with the jelly bean .tar image, bone stock.
then root with chains cf auto root (OG dev section)
then download the new clockwork mod touch 6.0.1.2 ..... put it on the root (meaning in no sub-directory, or in no other folders) of your internal sd card, and rename it to cwm6....
download an app called terminal emulator, open it, type "su" without quotes, then grant the app root access, then run these commands, hitting enter after each one:
dd if=/sdcard/cwm6.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery (hit enter...and you will see an output, xxx data transferred in xxx seconds blah blah)
reboot recovery (hit enter again. oops. phone rebooted....... into your new recovery)
good luck
wait, isn't it normal for the "android is upgrading/optimizing x of y apps" to appear after clearing cache? That usually happens when I clean my cache.
As for the other problems with this rom, i guess you should Odin using the method that doesn't trip your flash counter, as stated above
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
That's normal. It will happen every time it has to rebuild dalvik cache.
Sounds to me like you need to backup, wipe data and start fresh and clean.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I have the same thing happening to me each time I clear cache (optimizing x apps of y), that's completely normal. As to other problems that you said are happening just flash root66, rooted stock 4.1.1 rom, using odin and everything should be good.
Good luck

(Q) Been Gone For Some Time...???

I was wondering how in the hell do i get updated to all the new updates and such.
Currently i'm rooted with Twrp 2.3.1.0, i used the toolkit back some time ago and game me the option to basically install custom roms and such but never did anything except for a kernel.
So my question is Im still on LJC, 4.1.1, and i'm sick of the pop ups for the install update, and i know its going to fail so i'd figure can i just install a custom rom and it will take care of all that crap like for instance just go ahead and start fresh and install CyanogenMod?

That could be an option if you're looking to move over to AOSP but if you wanted to stick with TW you could always just flash a ROM based off stock 4.1.2, MA7 or MC2.

Then i had flashed CM10 then after flashed GApps, rebooted and bam into bootloop, and as i typing this i 'm doing the avatar rom and same thing bootloop. also i should mention it skips the md5 check and says there is no md5 file.

When you say CM 10 I'm assuming you're referring to CM 10.1? If so make sure your using the correct gapps and if you still face issues I suggest redownloading the ROM and gapps through Goomanager, make sure the MD5 match up, and then fully wipe and flash again. Keep me updated.

Ok I see what you're doing. My brother had a similar problem and there seems to be something wrong with the kernel script not running through properly and to fix this you will need to perform a factory reset as the OP instructs BUT I would try it twice. Once before the flash and another after the flash. Try it and if that doesn't work try the same steps with a 3rd party kernel. Flashing a kernel after the ROM is not recommended but if it helps to boot up the phone then you'll know it was the stock kernel. Let me know

Does it bootloop...or have you just been impatient? 1st boots of a new ROM can take a while.
Presuming it is stuck at boot splash...either an unstable build, or a corrupt download are possible. Verify the MD5 of your downloads.

Every device handles things differently, including first boot up times. It can take anywhere from 5-10min. So don't worry about how short Josh's boot up time was in his video. I highly suggest you:
1) Wipe system, data, cache/dalvik 3x
2) flash ROM and Gapps
3) Go back and perform a "factory reset" 3x
4) Reboot
5) Let phone sit at most 15min.
Just do this one final time exactly as instructed and assuming you've tried earlier nighties, if it doesn't boot up by 15 min then you'll know it's the phone and NOT you.

[Q] Softbricked my phone after TWRP data format...

Hey there guys, long time lurker, first time poster.
I've had a flashed ls970 for a while now, on spleef's 10/28 Carbon build. I was noticing my sd card was constantly full and logcat wasn't the issue, so I decided to format my data via TWRP. I then attempted to flash the current CM11 nightly (1/2) and had it fail on me. After that didn't work, I cleared my cache, dalvik, and data and flashed CM10.2. It worked fine, I got it to work and everything was right with the world. I rebooted it via CM's power menu to have the LG logo pop up and then a blank screen.
As of right now, my phone will ONLY work if I keep it on. If I turn it off, it softbricks. I have to format data, factory reset, etc etc. and the only rom that seems to flash at all is CM10.2. I've tried the stock rom, the Carbon 10/28 build, the CM11 nightly (and the proper gapps) and they all fail. I've tried via adb sideload and have tried via TWRP after an adb push. Last night, I used LGNPST to get teenybin on and got TWRP 2.6.0.0... still, no rom's would flash.
Like I said, if I turn my phone off, the only course of action that enables me to use the phone is by formatting my data, wiping everything except the internal memory (which I know not to do), and reflashing CM10.2 + pa's gapps for 4.3. No other rom's will flash onto the phone. What do you guys think I can do?

I'll look for some kernel's now and see if that makes any difference. My CPU's min is set to the lowest setting, 384000.
When you flashed CM 11 you needed to use the KK 2.6.3.0. You can find it in the root guide and the TWRP thread. The TWRP in teeny bins is the wrong one for 4.3 and up.
LGNPST teeny bins, flash the kk TWRP and install clean.
BTW any twrp backup prior to the new 2.6.3.0 will fail when you restore it.

BTW any twrp backup prior to the new 2.6.3.0 will fail when you restore it.
Edit. @spleef..Welcome home!

Updated TWRP to 2.6.3.0 via fastboot. Wiped cache, dalvik cache, data. Factory reset. Flashed the CM11 M2 and gapps for 4.4 - failed. I have the log if you want it.
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/cmod11.zip'
Error flashing zip '/scard/cmod11.zip'

Are you also wiping /system? I think that's what's causing that error.
And your sure you're using the KK 2.6.3.0? The one from Shel's codefire DL and octhropes links are flashable zips.
You may want to just go back to stock, make sure it works, then do CM/AOSP. There's a stock rooted zip in development.

Yeah, I just retried it wiping /system and still failed. On the top of the recovery, it says "Team Win Recovery Project v2.6.3.0," which I got the .img from the TWRP site for the Sprint LGOG. edit: for good measure I flashed the zip from octhrope and rebooted into recovery again.
I'm downloading your ZVC Deodex V2 to flash right now - I'll edit and let you know how it works. I'm going to wipe dalvik cache, system, data, and cache, then factory reset and then flash the rom (just so I'm being entirely transparent in what I'm doing).
edit: The second I started the flah for the zvc v2, it failed:
E:unable to open zip file.
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/ZVC_Deodex_V2.zip'

Check the md5sum. Make sure it wasn't a bad DL.
You may just have to start from LGNPST.
There are 2 versions of the 2.6.3.0. You HAVE to use the KK version to flash 4.4 ROMs. Which should be the one you got from octhrope. Just make sure the TWRP is written as being for kk. Other than what I, or octhrope have listed as KK TWRP's there no way to tell.
So to start fresh. In TWRP wipe the 4 then power off. It'll warn of no OS. Then LGNPST either zvb or zvc? Then you can teeny bin, then flash KK TWRP, and flash a rom. Again... Probably flash stock to start of with.
In the root guide is a walk thru for LGNPST up to teeny bins if it'll help better.

Here comes stupid question #1!
How do I convert your rom to a .bin to use on lgnpst? or, what do I download/do to get it to work on lgnpst?

Never stupid questions with our phones.
It's all in the Root guide stickied in Development.
But ... the bin file you need is here. http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111252790 It's ZVC which is our most current.
Then, since you already are using LGNPST, you can teeny bin to get root and unlock.
Then flash KK 2.6.3.0 TWRP, Flash stock ROM and you should be good to go.
Another option is to LGNPST ZVC bin, use fiddy619 root, then install FreeGee from the market and it will unlock and install the needed TWRP or CWM. Either option will work for you
I'm trying to get that file to work through lgnpst and it keeps coming back saying it's an invalid bin file. Anything I'm doing blatantly wrong?
edit: alright, I just used lgnpst to teenybin the sbl unlock version, flashed the zvc deodex v2, and rebooted and now I'm stuck in the LG logo screen... damnit, lol.

Did you wipe the 4usuals before flashing? If not, get into recovery, do a factory reset. Don't wipe /system

Check the md5sum on both those files. Make sure they match the reference in the DL site.
Can you get into DL mode?

You need to unzip the bin file before using it.

Yeah, all four. This time I won't do system.
edit: still stuck on LG screen
The md5's are the same, and I can get into DL mode.
and i'm stupid. Gonna do that now. Over a day of fixing this is frying my brain.
edit 2: I'm flashing the .bin now, will update after it's done. and it didn't work. same issue, stuck on LG screen.

That's weird. You should have stock recovery.
If I remember right to get into stock recovery, press power+vol dn until capacitive lights come on then release. It might take a couple of tries. Then do a factory reset. IT WILL WIPE EVERYTHING! SD included. I think you have to use the capacitive menu to select your choice.
LGNPST should go to 67% and reboot. Leave your phone plugged in until the screen comes up that says something like.... Unable to communicate

Sorry... Sent that to soon. After the factory reset it should boot up.
The bit about LGNPST was just some info.

Error on update binary either means you need cwm or different twrp. Or its a ROM for a different device. Probably the first 2 though.

Also, when I soft bricked mine without a custom recovery, LGNPST didn't work, but LGflashtool did. You'll lose everything though
Sorry, didn't read above. I'll just leave the post there in case anyone else has a problem

Good to know regardless. Thank you!

[Q] Can't for the life of me get GPS to work!!! Help please!

Good morning everyone,
I've been using custom ROMS since I got this phone several years ago, and that was after custom ROMS on the HTC Shift. I've never had as many recovery issues as with this phone. I love it when it works, but dang if it makes me crazy most of the time. For a long time, I was running Dirty Unicorn and had GPS just fine. Well, I wanted to go to newer ZVC Roms, so I updated to ZVB and then ZVC and I just can't get GPS to work since then. I've gone to stock ROMS (New_ZVC_Stock_Odex as well as OpTimuS_DE_V5.0) and still can't get GPS to work. Now, I am unable to get anything to flash from recovery and am currently on SuperNexus 4.0. I've tried installing using both TWRP and CWM using the zips that are included with FreeGee to no avail.
I've including the recovery log as well as a screenie of my About Phone details. I'd really like to get to the bottom of both installing ROM issues as well as the GPS issue.
Thanks!
Steve
For your recovery issue, it looks to me like you have md5 check running. So in your recoveries, there's a setting to disable md5 check. That should allow you to install Roms.
As for the GPS, maybe try updating profile/prl. Maybe?

Thanks engine.
I unchecked that in TWRP and it doesn't error, but it gets to the Successful message too quickly for a full install. When I reboot, it just black screens...
I went back and tried with CWM and am getting an "set_perm: some changes failed", followed by "E: Error in /{path}OpTimuS_DE_V5.0.zip (Status 7)" Installation Aborted message. I thought that only had to do with using older versions of TWRP and CWM, but I'm using the latest versions...
One thing that is strange, whenever I reboot from CWM, I get a "Root access possibly lost. Fix?" message. I allow it to fix (/system/xbin/su), but it still shows up the next time I reboot from Recovery. Perhaps I lost some of root???
At least I have a good backup (sans GPS unfortunately)...

For either recovery to work with backups, you have to restore with the recovery it was made with. So if your backup was TWRP 2.5.0.0, you can't restore it using 2.6.?.?
The root issue shouldn't have anything to do with recovery. It's probably just picking it up from the messed up install.
So try reinstalling the recovery your backup was made with. Then restore the backup, then see if things without.
Then try to get back to a stock rom again.

Thanks engine!! You are da MAN!!! Not sure what I did wrong, but I was able to download your New_ZVC_Deodexed ROM and was able to get it installed through TWRP. Updated the PRL and Activated the phone and lo and behold I had GPS!!!
For those that don't know - in TWRP, you can't just go in and click Wipe and then Swipe to Wipe the phone. You need to go into Advanced Wipe and check the checkbox next to /system, /dalvic /cache/, and /data. Make sure that you DON'T check "Internal Storage" because that will clear out your SD-Card.
I can't thank you enough for the ROM development that you do for this forum as well as all the help that you've done for people!
Thanks Man!
