[Q] Factory Reset lead to problems with Titanium Backup (using CWM) - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've looked around and cannot find a solution specific to my issue. If someone can direct me to where I can find a solution I would be grateful.
I have a Samsung Epic 4g (Galaxy S) and have CWM on it. I recently did a factory reset of the phone and after resetting, Titanium Backup (not Pro) is stuck on the "asking for root rights...." screen, even after Superuser Elite asks to allow it.
I've seen things that say to uninstall the updates to SU and I've tried that. I've tried uninstalling SU Elite and Titanium Backup then reinstalling and I can't figure it out.
I'm somewhat of a novice when it comes to this, and brand new to this site so I'm hoping someone can help me with this while walking me through it if need be.
Thank you greatly.

Re-root maybe?

Sounds like you may have lost root somehow.

That's what I was thinking, but once I booted up my phone after the factory reset, superuser was still there. Doesn't that mean my phone is still rooted? Not to mention, I've booted up cwm a bunch still after the reset? I'm confused.

To be sure, why not download the app root checker from the play store? Then you will know what you got.

Awesome idea, I wasn't aware. However, I downloaded it, ran it and it verified my root access with no issues. HMPH. I have no idea what to do.

DEFINITELY A RE-ROOT, I say.
Superuser is just an app managing "ALLOWs" and "DENYs". The real issue should be that you lost/broke your su binary in /system/xbin... If you have CWM then easily recover by flashing the latest SU zip package found at http://androidsu.com/superuser/ . Good luck

Team Epic has a CWM flashable that should also clear any binary remnants and get you back rooted the right way.. You can then flash TWRP and all that afterwards if you want.
epiccm.blogspot.com/p/about-epic-cm.html is the site link...mught help you.

Well, you have all been a big help. I downloaded this latest su zip and was about to see if it was the issue. Right before I did that, I said "what the hell" and tried flashing via rom manager one more time. You guessed it, it worked. All the headaches for no apparent reason. However, I thank everyone. I'm a new member to the site and it's refreshing to see many try and come to your aid.

Ok need a lil help I think I messed up

Ok so after a few unsucesfull attempts to root with one click. I tried the gingerbreak no pc method. Root went fine it seemed and I have super user and root access. Ok so I installed rom manager and tried to flash clockwork 2.5.1.0 so I go to rom manager, choose flash rom, go to clockmod 2.5.1.0.zip hit ok and all that eventually it reboots into clockwork. But the only options are: reboot, flash update.zip, factory reset, and clear partition. So I chose the update zip one. It failed said it couldn't find updaten.zip so I tried that a few times no luck reboted and tried again..no luck so I went through 3 b utton push thing on a reset and clockwork doesn't open. I have to go through rom manager and when I do those are the only 3 options. Also when in clockwork. The camera button is not the ok/enter button as it should be I have to hit the home key for ok. So I tried to flash the fix for 5the home screen. Same issues. Where di I go wrong? How do I get going again? The phone works fine, wifi teather is working now. Just can't seem to get clockwork working or flash anything

Okay, a few things first:
1. Narrow down your problem, your description is far from clear and concise
2. If you're having problems with ClockWorkMod, search their threads for your answers, or post your question there
3. Why are you using Gingerbreak? That's for, Gingerbread. You shouldn't be messing with a leaked and buggy Rom if you don't know what you're doing.
My suggestion is to go to the Clockworkmod thread. Check out version 3 in my signature. All your problems are likely answered there. But I can't answer them for you, regardless, because you neglected to mention why you resorted to this frazzled method. If you want to pursue this method, you'll have to go back to the forum you got it from for your answers, but I recommend starting over.
GOOGLE any question you have with "XDA" in the search bar and I promise that your question has already been answered.
Well I tried to do one click 4 times and could never root. I fund this gingerbreak method in the samsung epic 4g dev area. I ran it and I have root. I had no other idea what to do at the time to gain root. I have rea through the clockwork area but none of the help answerd seemed to have the same issues as me. Sorry. Ill keep reading. I been tryin. At thi since Friday afternoon n just getting frutrated

The reason the One Click didn't work is because you didn't turn off your AV and it kept deleting the single most important part of it.

A couple dumb questions:
1. Is your computer detecting your phone?
You may have a cable problem.
2. Is your phone properly recognized?
You likely haven't installed the drivers listed on the OneClick page for 32 bit and 64 bit computers.
3. Have you attempted to Odin back to stock?
In the first line of my signature you will see a link to Syndicate Rom Frozen and CWM Odin. Download that rom to your phone. Then follow the other link and download the EB13 pre-rooted with CWM 3.0.0.6. Odin the necessary files as the page tells you to, then boot into CWM, and flash Syndicate Rom Frozen. Follow all directions where applicable. When your phone is happy, shutdown properly. Three finger boot into CWM. Backup your phone, and then RESTORE that backup immediately. Journaling will be on. You will be happy. Any future problems from there will have been answered in the Syndicate thread.
Edit: I see k0nane beat me to the punch! I still recommend following the directions as I laid out above, this should be an easier fool-proof process for you. Otherwise, I yield to k0nane's expertise.

Very true, but the directions for Gingerbreak actually told him to use it for this computer-less root method.
Thanks for all the help so far. So what's better than rom manager?
Is there a way to just install clockwork right now? I am not wanting a custom rom or anything else. The only reason I am rooting at all is to fix the lock screen date.
If I could just install clockwork from where I am at now that would be helpfull.
Id like to keep all my settings and apps n such just as they are I finaly have this thing kinda doing what I want I really don't wana mess with it too much more.
Thanks for all the help so far.
My biggest issue with rooting so far has been my lack of access to a computer that I can use to do the roting. I get pc access but getting access to one I can download to doesn't happen often
Thanks again

I have the same issue, I actually downloaded CWM, Roms, and everything to my phone and then loaded them to my work computer. Use dolphin mini if the default browser gives you issues downloading.
Syndicate has a flash-able fix for the date, is that what you want to apply? I just put it on for the hell of it, but I have to tell you, after May, you won't see a problem with any other month. If that's your only reason for rooting, you may just want to stick it out for this month, just saying.
Yeah that's really the only reason I'm rooting.
Thanks for all the help!

Need some help please.

I have installed the cwm with no problems using ODIN. I then transfered the SU zip file to my sdcard. I booted the phone into recovery mode, found the zip file and ran it. I rebooted the phone , superuser was there. I then downloaded titanium back up from the market and installed it, it gave me an error about not having the needed permissions. I then downloaded rootchecker to see if i was rooted and it responded with not rooted. So then I ran the cwm again, and did the zip again and still not rooted. So in my ultimate noobness i figured I'd do start from scratch again and did a factory reset. Of course the CWM was still there and superuser is still on the phone. Now when I try to power the phone off it locks on the goodbye screen. I thought I did alot of reading on the tutorials and what not before I gave this ago. Any suggestions or help would be greatfully appreciated.

just make sure you follow the steps for correct model. that's how i always start from scratch. afterwards reroot (which is also included on the site i posted) and install all your stuff. come back and get your prefered rom and voila. good luck
You need to make sure it's the right su file for your ROM version. ICS 4.03 uses 3.07.
Edit, originally thought you were talking about CM until I realized you were talking about CWM.

Sorry, I'm using Darkside Telus ICS not CM. I used su 3.07 to root.
I would assume each CM ROM has it's own gapps zip.
They are either baked in or you have to flash them separate. Usually its part of the thread if you have to or not and they will be included
Deff misread you post.. my bad.. my original response would have been still my solution. I would go back to complete stock and then reroot . Just one thing. If you already done that, did you fully factory reset from withing the phone. Maybe that could be the problem. Go to settings/ back up and reset/ factory reset. This will wipe everything that was previously installed. Make sure you do this after you unroot. And then start over from scratch. You should have no issue.
"feeding this unicorn carrots til the finish line"
Seeing as these responses your getting have nothing to do with your question .. I have a suggestion. Since you have CWM have you thought of just flashing a stock already rooted rom?

"No Tripping Flash Counter" root isn't rooted

I installed the rooted ROM at [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter [SPR L710VPALEN] (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774722), although I stopped before installing CWM.
It appears I don't have root. I even try to let Superuser update itself from a 3.0.x version to 3.1.1. I am never prompted to grant root access, and it eventually says "Superuser has been denied Superuser permissions".
If Superuser itself cannot get root, then how can this be called a rooted ROM?
P.S., I would have posted in the thread, but I am apparently too much of a n00b per the forum settings.
I know this doesn't help you, but Superuser worked fine for me after using the same method. All I can suggest is to try flashing it again.
Edit: make sure you don't have both Superuser and SuperSU installed. They can conflict with each other.

I only have Superuser installed. It's what came with the ROM. I haven't installed anything else since doing the ROM.
I already flashed twice, got the same results each time.
However, after the flash but before it started installing updates, I ran Superuser, clicked Info, and the entire line above tap to check for updates was green. However, after allowing the first update to install, the line had the left side red:
-rwxr-xr-x root shell /system/xbin/su
It was the same after the third update. I wonder if something about those two updates is disabling root?

Thanks. Just to make sure, are you saying that the original instructions (in the thread linked at top) are wrong to suggest you have a rooted ROM if you haven't installed CWM?
Also, that would mean http://www.androidauthority.com/gal...ot-l710vpalen-stock-rom-flash-counter-103351/ is incorrect.

CWM is used to install root and rooted roms. I have root for my wifes phone but I do not have CWM and all works fine. She actually would never use recovery but I do know how to flash one on there if necessary.
I am quite sure the tutorial is not incorrect and just a misunderstanding somewhere

I'm scratching my head because there's not much to misunderstand here. The instructions are simple; either you've installed the ROM or you haven't. Since Superuser appeared for the first time after installing the ROM, and the phone prompted me to install two updates after installing, that tells me that the ROM installed correctly.
Wonderful. Just followed the instructions for installing CWM that were linked from http://www.androidauthority.com/gal...ot-l710vpalen-stock-rom-flash-counter-103351/. Not only did that not give me a working copy of CWM, that also made CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD report Yes (1 counts).

I see what your problem is. You're taking the OTA updates. Those erase /system/bin/su and unroot you. Before you take either OTA, install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from the Play Store, and back up your root. Then take both updates, reopen, Rootkeeper, and restore root.
No CWM needed.

Bad news: While it is correct that the OTA updates are killing my root, Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper won't work. Even with it installed,

Will check on alternatives.

I tried once using the instructions at .http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-sph-l710-sprint-clockworkmod-recovery-99305/. Not only did it not install, it incremented my binary counter. Fortunately I was able to use Triangle Away to reset that.
I'm still not clear how CWM will help me. This is supposed to be a rooted ROM already. Not sure why I would need CWM.

Which zip would not flash in recovery?
The only zip you will flash in recovery is team epic root from recovery. And it must be flashed in the recovery that was installed with Odin.
If you let the phone restart after flashing recovery in Odin the custom recovery will be replaced by the stock recovery.

As a TOTAL noob: appreciate the easy explanation! Waiting to do this myself, but have a few quick questions first. I've done a lot of reading up on rooting but I'm still not entirely clear on a few things so I'm hoping someone can explain it to me like I'm five:
1. Can I accept over-the-air updates from Sprint on a rooted phone? i.e. when they push Android 4.2. If not, do I unroot and reroot to update? Do I have to uninstall everything?
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?
Thanks so much!!

This is not going to be a straight up yes or no answer. If an update comes ota to your phone, you will be able to receive it providing you:
1. reflash stock recovery before accepting it.
2. haven't flashed a custom rom
3. haven't removed any required software. The ota will look for certain software and files. if the required software and files aren't present the ota will fail
None of this should concern you though. There are ALWAYS ways to get the updates while being rooted
2. Is there something I need to install after doing this? I previously rooted an HTC EVO and remember having to install Superuser immediately after. Anything similar here? Looking to ultimately run wifi tether so any advice toward that end would be greatly appreciated.
These instructions seem like you are doing many things. You aren't. There are really only 5 steps. I just broke all the steps down in detail. Really all this is:
1. Downloading all the files to your computer
2. Installing your Samsung Drivers to your computer
3. Copying one file to your phones sd or external sd card. (Team_Epic Root_From Recovery)
4. Flashing CWM Recovery to your phone with Odin.
5. Flashing TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip with CWM Recovery
The Team Epic File that you are flashing in recovery installs superuser, busy box, and in addition removes two files needed to make recovery stick.
3. I'm a little confused about rooting/flashing and some basic definitions. Are they the same thing? I hear a lot about CyanogenMod - what is it and is it coming into play here?
Rooting is really nothing more than giving you the user, the right to access root or system files. It has very little to do with flashing as you can flash updates with stock recovery.
Flashing is simply installing something in a tar, img, or zip format. tar files are flashed with Odin, zips are flashed from recovery and img files are flashed or pushed with adb (Android Debug Bridge)or fastboot.
Cyanogen is a rom. roms are very simply the phones operating system and user interface. They're called roms because their files are kept on read only memory. There are many roms out there for our phone.
Awesome, appreciate the prompt response - thanks so much!!
Thanks!
Thanks for putting this together. My new gs3 arrives tomorrow and I have already prepped my computer with your files in anticipation.
I'll report back how it works out.
Thanks again!
One more thing
When I do get my phone should I activate it first or root it first or does it matter?
I know it voids the warranty but I guess I could unroot to take it in for service if needed?
Thanks again.

I would activate it.
This works with the 4.1 update, correct?
I previously had the Galaxy S1 (Epic) and went through several custom ROMs before finally going back to a stable release with root because of dissatisfaction with the ROMs. My phone never really returned to perfect functionality after this experimentation, and always had some buggy glitches and many FC's. Now that I have a perfectly running GS3 with Android 4.1, I would love to be able to wifi tether and install apps like adblock and Titanium Backup Pro, but I am hesitant because of my past experience.
Do you think there is any reason at all that simply doing this root procedure would change the functionality of my perfectly smooth-running GS3?

[Q] Broke my SuperSU app by installing busybox?

(My first post on the forums! You guys have helped me out so much in the past, and I'm excited to finally communicate with you. Wish me luck!)
I recently installed the 4.3 OTA update on my Samsung Galaxy S3, using the zips and instructions from these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
It went perfectly, without a hitch. Everything was running great, and I was loving everything about stock, de-samsungized 4.3, root and custom bootloader.
I was very interested in the dSploit app, and installed it, found out I needed Busybox. I installed it using the busybox installer. This is where the trouble begins. SuperSU needed a binary update after I installed busybox for some reason, even though I was fairly certain I already had the latest binaries. I tried running it through the automatic update with my teamwin bootloader, but it only booted into recovery and nothing installed. After googling it for a bit, decided to re-flash SuperSU. Suddenly, I began recieving the message "Unfortunately, SuperSU has stopped working" every time I tried to access anything requiring root priviledges. Anything that had already been granted root access (including Titanium Backup, thank goodness) seemed to work fine as long as it didn't need to request additional privileges. Unfortunately, I'm now locked out of ES File Explorer and the xposed framework (all prior installed modules continue to function though)
My initial thought was to wipe and reload using the process I used to get here in the first place, but I'm running 4.3 now, and I understand that downgrading is impossible now, and no flashable 4.3 stock roms seem to exist.
So I'm lost, guys. I need my root back somehow... If I forgot any information you think would be relevant and/or helpful, let me know and I'll provide anything you need. I've been googling and searching the forums for days, but I haven't found anyone with this exact problem.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling SuperSu?
Since SuperSU was flashed to the device via Odin, it is registered as a system app. The app store only has the open option, and I can't access the app in the system folder without root privileges, which it won't give me, so...
Yeah. Unless there's a script I can run through recovery, that's a dead end.

there is a zip of SuperSU you can flash from recovery

I've tried this. In fact, that was when SuperSU began force-closing. I just need to completely uninstall it and start fresh, I think.

Have you tried the cleanup/unroot options inside supersu settings? Then starting over?
I might not have stated this directly before, but the SuperSU app won't launch. I tap on it and immediately get the "Unfortunately" error. I have no way of accessing anything within the app.

Ok well then find one of the 4.3 roms in development that you can use. I'm on s3rx 3.0 and other than some hiccups (still a wip atm) that are liveable, its pretty stable. You can flash this safely in recovery without the bootloader/modem package since you already took the OTA without risk of bricking. Its prerooted so no worries there. Good luck

Thank you for that. It's always good to have a fallback option.
I'm still wondering though, is there a script I could flash that would completely remove SuperSU / BusyBox / superUSER (CWM) to scratch and allow me to re-flash CF-Autoroot? Barring that, how difficult would it be to code one myself?
FIXED IT.
Apparently, flashing the latest version of SuperSU from the developer's website (1.86) will not work on Android 4.3. I flashed version 1.65 as provided in the original 4.3 Rooting Guide, then updated it in the Play Store followed by a binary update and re-installed BusyBox, and everything is back to running order. Thank you all for your help and advice!
