Easy GPS fix for JB ROMs - 12/04 Updated - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This is NOT my work. I found it in another forum and linked to in in the CNA JoyRide thread a couple of days ago. It works so amazingly I want to post it here for more to see. Original thread can be found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1747943
Look for the gps.conf inside the system/etc folder. Make a backup copy of the original file if you prefer. Replace the content with these below and push it back to the system/etc folder. No need to even reboot and you can expect to get a GPS lock within seconds and it's very accurate!
NTP_SERVER=server 0.us.pool.ntp.org

I did try flashing a stock ROM, update PRL &Profile and get a lock and then nandroid back. It worked at first and then stopped working. Tried that multiple times and it was so frustrating. My GPS was working after a clean install but stopped working after I set up my phone and installed a few irrelevant apps. I flashed the GPS fix zip but it didn't help either. The above method worked instantly, no need to make a zip and flash, just replace the file and it's done.
I'm not a dev so even if you tried it and it didn't work, I wouldn't know how to fix it lol. I'm only good at a little research and finding things that are already there. I have at least 6 or 7 people report back and said it worked amazingly on our phone, plus the people from that thread. So hope you enjoy it
-------------
Update:
Thanks g_ding84 for making this file and flashable zip. This should work in all JB Roms, TW based or AOSP Roms, and also reported to be working on TW based ICS Roms.
Premade file: http://d-h.st/i3i
Flashable zip: http://d-h.st/yRy
Replace the gps.conf file in system/etc folder or flash the zip in recovery.
Also this fix is included in g_ding84's rom you can check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993102

12/04 Update:
If the above didn't work for you, try replacing the content with these below. Clear data from the google map app, reboot.
NTP_SERVER=server 0.us.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=server 1.us.pool.ntp.org

Some said the first script had some incorrect format but it worked well for me in CNA and a lot of members reported back and said it worked great, too. However, after I installed the FK23 leak my GPS stopped working after a couple of days. I tried the first one but it didn't seem to work that well so I edited it, cleared data from google map, rebooted and got a lock within 10 seconds with an accuracy of 10 meters (about 33 feet). If you're on a stock ROM you can also update PRL and Profile after you change the file and then reboot. Let me know if it helps.
Here's the updated zip (Thanks a lot g_ding84)

LOL this was how I felt when i tried it. Didn't think it was gonna work at all. Replaced the file and it worked just like that! Before that it would spin forever and even after I got a lock in a stock rom and flashed back it still showed my location as 2 blocks away from where I was....

You can use root explorer and find that file, edit it with notepad on your computer, and then push it back to that folder. It's pretty easy. Not sure if the file is different in different roms.

thats simple ill do that thanks!

So do I delete everything in the file and paste that stuff in or do I add them in?
Because I was just gonna add them in.

OP sez:

So I'd think you should delete and/or replace, rather than add in the new lines.
But it also suggests you make a backup of the original file, so you might want to do that, too. :good:

Thanks buddy

Worked great, just edited the file, saved it and rebooted. First lock took a bit but going great now! Awesome find OP! (PA 2.4)

Its easier to just open in with root explorer and edit the file with text editor. Save and close. As stated you don't even have to reboot

Just started running bonsai on my epic 4g. I came over from tmobile (vibrant, Teamwhiskey) I've seen some screenies of people running bonsai with Stock/AOSP Mms. I've done some searching but can't find anything. help?
thanks guys
Just replace the Mms.apk with the AOSP mms.apk.

Think he needs the APK still X.
Here it is if you haven't found it. Make sure to hit the thanks button for that guy that posted it. He's a badass. lol

Oh btw, just replace the existing one in /system/app or push it using ADB.

Thanks for the link, but that one says its the text-about-voicemail mms.apk, is there any way to avoid that? I'm probably splitting hairs here but just curious, lol.
Also, i'm at work (no adb) I couldn't just fire up the apk on my phone, i'd actually have to push it through, right?
The text about vm is not avoidable. I think someone said you can block the 9016:// messages through sprint maybe? im not sure exactly. I use to care at first then i realized I don't really get many VM's. And if you're at work you can just move it into the /system/app folder. You dont have to use adb push. That's just another option.

I tried moving it into the system/app folder and it just gave me a parsing error, can't get it to receive texts. I put the old Mms.apk back in the apps folder and it threw the same error.
*edit*
I re-zip-flashed bonsai and it seemed to repair my texting ability. I tried the process again (replacing Mms.apk), then went into CW Recovery and wiped dalvik, booted and it still is on the samsung themed bubble Mms.apk. For sh*ts and giggles i tried tap-installing the Mms.apk and it wouldn't install, just as i figured. Suggestions?
Yeah tap-installing those system apps doesnt ever work. That's weird that you replaced the file, rebooted, and you were still on the old one. Although, technically there shouldnt be any need to reboot. I've switched out /system/app/Mms.apk and other apks without rebooting before. I do this all the time when theming. /boggle. Sorry, i'm not sure what more suggestions I can make. If you want I can try making it a flashable zip and maybe you can try that?

I'm running bonsai 4.0.1, not sure why it isn't working either. I'm not a dev but i'm no tech slouch myself and I can't figure it out. I'll try it again tonight. Also, teach a man to fish, don't give me the fish. If you happen to have a link for a tutorial to make flashable zips i'm all ears and ready to learn.
p.s. thanks button clicked.
Take a generic working CWM zip that replaces /system/ files. Delete all the crap out of it [dont delete Meta-Inf folder] with winzip, winrar, or 7zip. Drop in /system/app/Mms.apk . Most important thing is to maintain the file structure. As it will use it to push the Mms.apk onto the phone. Thats how i always do it.

[Fix] Network Location Updates (Cell Towers)

If you are having trouble with your network locations (cell towers) updating in the background, breaking location-aware apps like Tasker and Llama, try rolling back the com.google.android.location.apk in /system/app to a version from an older build. I am currently on Calkulin's EL29 based ROM and this has finally solved my cell tower location updating issues. Using either Root Explorer or adb, copy or push the linked file below into /system/app, replacing your current version (which will either be networklocation.apk or com.google.android.location.cpk, depending on which ROM build you are using), then reboot. The cell tower history should update in the background once again.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7821039/ET4G/com.google.android.location.apk
The purpose of this fix has nothing to do with connectivity to cell towers. It is only to facilitate the reporting by the system of which cell tower you are currently connected to, and which towers you have been connected to, in order to enable location to be reported to applications on the device that rely on network location as opposed to GPS location. For example, this fix enables Llama to function perfectly for me, so it changes my sound profiles based on my current location. It will also allow weather widgets to correctly determine you current location based on cell tower location instead of GPS.

Interesting, as mine is actually called com.google.android.location.apk. I think the apk name changed somewhere along the line from this to networklocation.apk, which may actually coincide with when the functionality broke, but I have no way to confirm that right now.
very intersting, would be funny if that was the case. strange thing is i dont remember this being an issue with calks 1.7 rom which i believe was based off of el26. it started with el29 for me. but i could have just not noticed. i tried taking the apk from 1.7 but the version number was the same so i used the one you pulled. we will see what happens.

I'm having the same problems using Astro when I try, any ideas? When I tried to rename it, I also got an error saying it was a read only file I believe.
EDIT: Nevermind, used Root Explorer and copied it after changing mount to R/W and it is fine. Then I installed it using the package installer in Root Explorer. Not sure if I should have done that or changed the name to the networklocation.apk and overwritten the old networklocation.apk, any ideas?
Thanks, really hope this works.

You do not need to rename the file or install it. Just replace the existing apk file (which would be called networklocation.apk or com.google.android.location.apk, depending on what ROM build you are on) it using root explorer, or push using adb.
I replaced the apk and now I get the following error each time I reboot:
Sorry!

[MOD]Phantom's Build.prop Tweaks

Taking this down for now, I have a rom coming out tonight
Hey all, some of you may know me from other sammy forums. I currently don't have a galaxy s iii yet, so am limited to what I can do in terms of development at the moment, but would like to release some build prop tweaks for you guys to get things running a little smoother.
The build.prop is attached at the bottom, just unzip and adb push to /system or place it there using root explorer and change permissions to match the existing file.. Enjoy, I will have more to come soon
For the latest lf9 Update.

Make sure you mount /system as read/write and not just read. I think most default to just read and you have to specify the write option/permission somewhere in the settings (at least with ES File Explorer).
To make the changes, I simply took the Vicious rom zip, opened it with Winrar on the PC. Went to the gps.conf file and opened with notepad. Pasted the changes, and choose file, then save inside notepad. Winrar will ask you if you want to save the changes back into the zip file. Choose yes. Upload the zip to the nexus,then simply flash it in clockwork.
As I was already running V3 of Vicious, all I did was wipe cache, then wipe delvik and flashed the modified rom.
I take no credit for this, simply was bored at work (everybody took off for the 4th)
When i get home I'll download the 4.0.4. stock toro image from google and see what the gps.conf file says.
This worked... im rocking V2 of VanirBean by jdkoreclipse...i was having issues with the gps not locating and locking on...(rocking V2 cause its stocky stock brah!) I used root explorer to edit the gps.conf remember you have to open it up as a text editor...anyways typed everything that OP had and saved and rebooted...cheers! awesome thanks.
You can get the stock jelly bean kernel in v3. You just have to flash it after you flash the ROM.

works great
Can you make a flashable zip for all Roms?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Still didn't work
I've also tried the GPS fix flash.
The hilarious part is that it always shows me at New York New York casino in Vegas when I'm actually in Houston, and has since Thursday night.

Would it be wise to edit this gpsconfig file right on the system folder of the ROM you are currently running? I'd reboot before I looked for any changes. I'm also running V2...trying to stay as close as possible to stock. (I'd love an exchange security disable though if possible)

Found this fix on rootzwiki. Confirmed working on Vicious JB V3.
edit the gps.conf inside the system/etc folder to say
NTP_SERVER=server 0.us.pool.ntp.org
server 1.us.pool.ntp.org
server 2.us.pool.ntp.org
server 3.us.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=0.north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_2=1.north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_3=2.north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_4=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_5=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
ACCURACY_THRES=80
SUPL_PORT=7276
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
I edited the gps.conf file inside the V3 zip and flashed in clockwork mod. works great.

I followed this to the T and my GPS still sucks. I might even just reflash everything because GPS is the only thing holding me back from absolutely loving JB right now. Im on Team Liquid Vicious-Toro V2

if you reflash, try including the GPS fix from my thread by putting it in the .zip before you flash it. It's been working great for me on my rom, but seems to cause problems when added to an existing rom. I'd be curious to see if it works when included with the rom. Thanks
Gps.conf to us servers. Reminds me if old hd2 days lol
For those it isn't working for not sure what they are. But the hd2 had the same issue and some servers worked better for others. There is us servers, north America servers, and east and west coast. And other host sites

IM trying to avoid reflashing if at all possible. I am going on vacation Wednesday and coming home Sunday and if there isn't any real fix for me I am just gonna have to break down and do it again. Thanks for the reply!
I think it worked!!

That's what I did, and it worked fine

[MOD]No increasing ring tone - LJ2 - i317

Well I'm not sure why Samsung does this, however it drives me nuts. So here is the phone.apk without the increasing ringtone stuff.
Flash in recovery.
You must delete the "SecPhone.odex" in /system/app after installing. Until I can make a time to have the zip do it. Thanks
Click here to download
Enjoy!
I was looking for a way to disable this.. thanks!
Thanks man.. awesome mod...needed this
I flashed from recovery, rebooted and it said updating apps,starting apps, had my wife call but it still does that lame ascending ringtone. I tried rebooting and now every time it reboots it says updating apps, starting apps.. sucks lol takes a little longer to start up now. Any way to fix? I also found the file you talked about deleting but it said it was read only.

Wow I was waiting for this mod!!! Sham on you Sammy for making this wonderful Dev make it right. I for sure didnt forget to hit the thanks button on this one!
Worked like a charm. Had to delete the odex file, then the mod took. A cache/dalvik wipe took care of the "upgrading apps" screen. My ringtones start loud and stay that way. Many thanks!

I can't seem to find the "secphone.odex" file. Only secphone.apk.

Are you running a custom ROM? If so, you're probably already deodexed.
OK. I got ya. I still get the "updating apparently" on restart. I have cleared caches.

Not sure I can be of much more help if you're on a deodexed ROM already. I've stuck with rooted/de-bloated stock for the time being. Wiping the caches solved it for me, aside from the first boot after the cache wipe, of course, but I'm still fully odexed aside from that one file I deleted.
It worked for me this time, thinfs different from the first try, im now on the lite de-bloated stock rom and modded kernel

So it looks like I need to modify the zip install to remove the .odex file.
Makes sense since de-odexing turns the .odex into a classes file inside the apk, which is then edited. I'll edit the zip today to remove to .odex file.

Did this ever get done, sir?
antiochasylum said:
Flash in recovery. Even if you aren't de-odexed this should still work. In the zip I did not have it delete the .odex extension in /system/app. So after you flash this feel free to delete the SecPhone.odex, or leave it, your choice.

I installed and it did not work. I then used Root Explorer to delete /system/app/SecPhone.odex, cleared caches, rebooted and it works fine.
Thanks for the utility it was greatly needed.

I fully agree with you, this volume increase doesn't make any sense however, is there a way to revert back to the previous state should something go awry? Thanks.
