[Q] Google Now - Jelly Bean ROMs - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Both ROMs I've tried (hashcode and Jandycane) have Google Now working (kind of - it doesn't crash), but it keeps telling me I need location services turned on. In the settings they are turned on, but it still doesn't work and doesn't show cards. Any ideas?

.gapps constantly crashing

So when I am just doing whatever, my phone locks up and a message saying (somgthing).gapps has either stopped working or has crashed. It happens typically once a day. I can be on Facebook, or the Google play store and when I tap a button, that happens. Any idea? I am stock ROM, but rooted. I'm assuming you guys will need more info, I'm just not sure what to say that could help.

More info is definitely needed.
1.) What ROM and Kernel are you using?
2.) Have you done any modifications to the said ROM or kernel?
3.) What gapps package are you using?
Try clearing data for Google framework

If you have CWM installed try fixing permissions.
Go into settings
Accounts and sync
Find your Google account
Turn off Internet sync
Give it a try it worked for me!

This. Try Google first, there are many threads on this already. Internet sync worked for me so try that before you start clearing all sorts of data like me lol

I'll give that a shot and see if it crashes anymore. What does that disable? Chrome syncing I'm assuming? I guess just the tabs?

Thank you! Any idea what that even does? Since I disabled Internet sync I haven't had the .gapps crash once!

Google Play Error

Ever since I got my SIII, I've been having problems with the Play Store. Anytime I go to purchase a paid application, I get the error "Unable to retrieve information from the server [DF-DFERH-01]. Googling this error only shows me a bug that affected the GTalk a few months back. But the even more odd thing is, its starting to happen on my N7 as well. I can download free apps fine. It looks like it's having problems initilizing Google Wallet for the purchase. Wasnt having these problems with my other phone (EVO 4G LTE on Sprint). Is this a known bug with T-Mobiles networks? I've tried it on multiple wireless networks, as well as HSPA. Even had my buddy sitting right next to me try and he could download fine. I'm rooted on CM10 today, but I've tried 3-4 other ROMS with the same problem. Almost positive its tied into my Google account. Did the basic troubleshooting steps such as clearing the Play Store data/cache/uninstalled a Google Play Services update, and re-added my Google account. Is anyone else experiencing this? And if so, is there a known fix?

I did actually. I switched to ParanoidAndroid for a second to see a new build. I screwed around for a few seconds then uninstalled it.

How would I tell that? It was set to stock when I flashed PA. And I set everything back before I flashed back.
Could also be a problem with your account like you mentioned. I think some people have had problems when having multiple services associated with that account. Maybe create a new account and see if it still happens. Dont know how inconvenient that may be for you.
But if its happening on different roms and devices then its surely the account. Maybe contact google support?

Go to Google Settings app, then go to location then turn off access location. Make sure Location Services is OFF as well.
Do you happen to use Google Now? For some reason, its location implementation makes it use Google Maps although you the user have never opened the app itself. I've had this problem myself too and I ended up disabling Google Now

what is that a app?
Go into Map settings>Location settings and turn off Resort grin this device and Enable Location History. This should solve your problem.
I had same problem I solved by searching on google. The trick is to disable and factory reinstall it.
When you go in app manager then map click Disable it will the propose you to install factory version say yes and renable it then boot just in case and Map won't consume the battery.
It worked for me and alot of other people
I don't why it do this some kind of bug in map that is delivered with phone but resting solve it.

**Figured out, I think**Anyone get the new Google Search?

I installed the new Google Search and the new Play Services in the hopes of getting the new always on OK GOOGLE to work, but so far no go. I know it has to be turned on from Googles side, but has anyone have it not work, then start working?
EDIT-I think I figured out how to make it work:
For those who dont have it activated yet, I think I figured out how to turn it on.
Google search>menu>Settings>Voice>OK Google detection>Menu button>Help & Feedback>scroll down and hit Audio History>Touch the plus next to See Your Audio History. At this point you should have to sign in to Google to turn on Audio History. Go back in to settings>voice and make sure Audio History is on.
After I did this the options appeared in OK Google Detection to use the hotword OK GOOGLE from any screen and from lock screen.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SEARCH 3.5.15 AND PLAY SERVICES 5.0 FOR THIS TO WORK
There's an Xposed module called Ok Google for 3rd party activities that will allow you to call out Ok Google from the home screens.

Yeah, I only enabled it to test and it worked while I was typing the last post. I'm on viper rom btw if that makes a difference.
Wow,... Your in the minority, from what I've read. It hasn't been turned on yet for my account by Google. Search 3.5.15 came out today and I was hoping, but not yet. I still don't have the options yet in my settings.
Have to click the search bar first, but works for me.(in u.s.a. with stock launcher)

There's a new Google search that has to be turned on by Google for it to work correctly. But after they do you can just say OK Google, even in a game, and it will work. But Google is slow so far activating it to everyone.

Then it doesn't work as I am explaining it. Once Google turns it on for your account you can just say OK Google, anywhere including the lock screen and screen off while charging, and have it work. No need to touch anything.
Basically just like the Moto X.
I forgot to mention that my search was updated yesterday to 3.5.15, newer than what came out last week with the new always on search, but it still hasnt been turned on by Google for me.

I haven't been to these forums in a while (been bogged down with life crap), but I'm glad I came here today! This is the first I'm hearing about this. I've been envious of this feature ever since I read about the Moto X.
The options were there on my HTC One, and it's working. Now I just have to be careful not to talk about anything the NSA might be interested in! Ha ha.
