So, a few weeks ago I flashed freeza's Sprint Touchwiz Jelly Bean 4.1.1 (L710VPBLJ7) Odex from ICS. It's been running beautifully without issue. I was able to install this ROM after installing ClockworkMod without issue since I was running a stock, but rooted version of ICS.
It wasn't until today I noticed that I can't perform a lot of tasks that require root
Apps that run:
- WiFi Tether: Launches without error, but I no longer see the SSID that was visible when I was still on ICS. Can't see it on laptops, tablets, etc.
- Root Explorer launches: I tap Mount R/W and nothing happens. No errors about not being rooted.
- File Explorer: I tap Root Explorer and get a message saying "Root explorer cannot be enabled. Make sure your device is rooted." (see screen shot)
- Super User: It shows lots of logs giving root access to various apps. I tried updating the binaries, but it fails (see screen shot).
I've attached a bunch of screen shots to see if it helps you guys figure anything out.
I'd appreciate your feedback.
Thanks!
Try installing SuperSU from the Playstore and uninstalling the regular SU app.

Are you using the TrevE modified version of WiFi Tether? The other one will not work on this rom (while it did on ICS).

No bueno. I tried updating the binaries in SuperSU and it failed.
I can't uninstall the regular super user app. I originally rooted my phone using TeamEpic's method, so I believe it it came with that.
If all else fails do a clean install

I installed the version directly from the dev's website: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/. I'll try one of the experimental versions.
Still, root access from a lot of other programs are not possible.
Is there a way to re-root this rom?
Thanks!
EDIT: I installed the latest beta listed on the link and installed the latest experimental version. That one turned out to be the TrevE modified version that you mentioned. This time, the beacon was visible to my laptop and tablet, but they could not connect to the phone.
I uninstalled and went back to 3.1 beta 14. I set the profile to the SIII and launched it. It failed the first time. Close the app, re-launched, and the tethering started without error. Again, back to not seeing the beacon.
This one is a definite head scratcher.
mikeregister: Obviously wiping and starting over would probably work, but that's not how troubleshooting works.
Thought I'd share an update...
I came across the below thread. I installed the version mentioned and WiFi tethering once again works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34038908
Now, onto the matter of re-rooting to see if that fixes things.
Let me know if you guys have any ideas.
I ran across the SU failed to update a couple times on my photon, there is an SU update fixer in the playstore that you can run and it fixes that issue, if you're still running into it after you attempt to re-root.

I tried the SU fixer.
It said no problems were found. I checked the "force" button and when I attempt the fix, the app crashes. I can't get a screenshot while it's attempting to fix to post the results.
Find the CMteam root package, and flash that in cwm/twrp. This gives you superuser, but fixes root, then you can install supersu if you want.

I would start here, this zip will clean out any binary remnants and all that, you will then need to flash TWRP if you want that for recovery.

That's the zip I used to originally root my phone when it was still running ICS.
I re-ran it yesterday to see if it would fix anything, but it didn't. After the phone re-booted, the OS began the Optimizing app xx of xx process, but it didn't fix anything. WiFi tether runs without errors, but Root Explorer and File Manager with root say my phone is not rooted. I confirmed it's rooted via Root Checker again.
Just to make sure, are you referring to TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip? That's what I ran on ICS and re-ran yesterday.
What's your take on flashing TeamEpic-RemoveRoot-from-Recovery-signed.zip and then re-rooting with the link you referenced?
Im about to search for the file im talking about, if you have twrp, you will still have twrp after...
Well ths file link posted for epicteam root v5 was the file, should work 100%.

I'm running CM7 #211 and yesterday my SUperuser app decided to RANDOMLY auto update itself. I didnt even know you could download the superuser app from the Market. Now all my apps are force closing. I uninstalled the update but my ROM is still F'd force closing on everything. I've tried clearing both caches and fixing permissions and it's still messed up. Any ideas? HOW DO I GET SUPERUSER TO NOT AUTO UPDATE?
I wiped my phone and restored to a backup last week and everything seems fine for the moment.... I just need to figure out how to force the market not to auto update any of my apps.
Since froyo rolled out, you have an option in the market to auto update. The part that sucks is this is within each app so if you have thirty apps, then you have to go into all thirty apps in the market and de-select the auto update option.
And yes, SU has been available for some months in the market as well as in XDA.

im running CM7 nightly 211 with the newest SU and it works just fine. if you go to the SU app and update the binary it will fix all the FC.
The latest night will have the updated binary and SU in the zip.
Update the binary? Is that done from within the superuser app?

yep go to the app. click menu button then preferences.
at the bottom you will see "tap to check for updates"
that way you can enjoy the new app and have the new binary's. without breaking CM7
Thanks I'll try that.
In TB you can disassociate apps from the market which is very handy so those you don't ever want to update such as themed or custom.

My superuser app was also auto-updated contrary to my will, i feel raped
First i need to say that everything in the update went fine, updated superuser app and binary are up and working OK.
But regarding what you said, i have eclair 2.1 and so i have the old Market 2.3.6. I also have the option "Allow automatic updating" present in all of my apps, so i can use it or not, it is up to me.
BUT the problem is that in Superuser app this option is not available. See pics:

ttp://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm203/lanosalf/2011-10-7-14-46-45.jpg
PS:
Add the "h" to "ttp" to get "http" and complete image link.
The XDA forum board don't let me put images, it says"to prevent spam new users cant post links..." or something That's okay but, in my opinion, links inserted in between [image] should be permitted.
EDIT: ALL OK NOW. When version 3.04 appear in Market, it also appears the option "Allow automatic updating", so know i can uncheck it if i want, and i did...

On my phone superuser doesn't show up in titanium backup. While other system apps show up in red. If anyone knows a way to make superuser show up in titanium please post it.
Guys, stop freaking out about the SU update. Just do like Synisterwolf said. You'll be fine.
Getting constant f/c on mine, even get them after clicking to update the binary.
Looking over the reviews for SU in the Market many are running into this problem with the latest update.
I had no issues with the update in CM7 but updating past SU app 3.0.2 and binary v2.3.2 running McSense 2.4 was a whole 'nother story. Basically locked down every root permissions app on my phone. Was able to nandroid back to 3.0.2 and disable updating in the market for that ROM. I'll just ignore the nag until the next update.
daj
BTW how are more people not talkign about this? Just about every review across many different roms and phones says the same thing:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/superuser/com.noshufou.android.su
I have no idea if this will help anyone with the SU program or not, or what effects it might have on certain roms.
So after hearing about the force closing on SU I grabbed my phone which I had just updated the binarys on the other day, and today installed a SU update. FC's all over the place as been described. No way to uninstall it from the market, (didn't try the main applications app) so I went to my astro program and from there I was able to uninstall it....well not the entire thing I guess but just the latest updates.
I can now enter back into it without it FC on me. I went to market and made sure auto update was now off and didn't update it when prompted as you open the app.
Seems to work now but I honestly never use it per se unless it prompts me to grant SU permissions when doing something else, so ymmv if doing as I did.
Just thought I'd put it out there in case it helped some folks.
Updated the app to 3.0.5. As long as I don't update the binary past 2.3.2, I'm good running McSense 2.4.

It's very likely that you won't. For me, 3.0.4 worked for the most part, but it never worked with adbWireless. I updated to 3.0.5 and started getting very frequent force closes. Superuser 3 is not ready for prime time. I'm back to superuser 2.3.6.3 su binary 2.3.2 and will stay there for a while.
Ok people this will fix the FC on superuser 3.0.5 with binary 3.0!!!!!
1. Go setting/application/manage applications and clear data on superuser
2. Go to market and install update
3. open superuser and preferences change automatic response to "allow"
The list will not show apps but log will and the first time the app accesses little lag but no FC.
Not sure if you already installed 3.0.5 if will fix... Can try clearing data and then change automatic response.
Tanks RL.
I read something like that lastt night and changing it to "allow" fixed the f/c for me.
But this whole thing is so stupid. So many times someone takes something that is perfectly fine and updates it till it is broken. If it's not broke don't fix it. Especially something as important as this.

Tried again using this except I uninstalled all updates first. Everything looked OK at first but I started getting FCs when opening TiBU. Cleared data for both SU and TiBU and tried again and it worked fine but as I started opening other root apps, the FCs came back. YMMV

WTF...First there were a million updates to Super User till the dev broke that about a month ago.
Now I update Busy Box in the market today and my WiFi connection won't work properly...Not having any idea that it could even be Busy Box's fault I started doing a serch and others are having the same problem after the new Busy Box update.
And I just installed the newest ota update so I don't have an old nandroid to restore to.
The WiFi will work sometimes but slow and not seem to respond at all other times...weird.
Can you uninstall updates through Settings > Applications?
Edit: Actually, is busybox even necessary anymore? I just realized I'm on McD's ICS ROM and I don't seem to have busybox installed. I've restored all of my apps through Titanium and it never prompted me to install.

Now I am having problems with TB, don't know if its busy box related. Just tried to integrate maps and now it is gone from my phone.
I updated earlier and have had no issues. I dont see how it would mess anything up as it was just an update to the app (which is basicly just an updater) not the busybox binary which is what actually performs all the actions.

Thats what I was thinking. But all of a sudden have just started having some weird issues. Maybe a coincidence.
And now had my first problem with TB integrating an app, but I think TB uses another version of Busy Box so I dunno.

I believe your right, TB has busybox built into it.
I'm also expieriencing broken WiFi after updating busybox last night. Now running 1.19.3 - woke up today and my phone was super hot (110 F), battery was at 80% when I unplugged it and WiFi is stuck on 'obtaining IP address'
I'm unable to get wifi to work on my home wireless where I have WPA secuirty setup, or on my work's wireless where I have no security.
I've been trying various suggestions posted in other threads and on other forums but nothing has resolved the issue. I'll keep at it when I have free time today and update this thread if I have any success..
EDIT: not sure if it's worth mentioning or not, but Root File explorer seems to be broken as well, opening up to a blank screen that just says 'Root Explorer' on top. Have to hit the home key to exit the program.

This is correct, it has it built into the app.
I got it working by setting a static IP. Hardly a fix, but wifi is working now.
I have no idea what the root cause of this is.. or if it's even related to busybox.
Apologies if I've hijacked the thread (having completely different hardware and all) but I believe we share the same issue. I'm planning on flashing to a new ROM soon if I can't get DHCP working again.
EDIT: Root Explorer still not working though, & eventually force closes if not exited with home button.
If you believe the new busybox is the problem just open it up and install the previous version.

--Update (day after). Flashed to cm7 last night and everything's good now. I don't have the patience to troubleshoot lately.
Hey there,
when I open superuser and swipe to the Info page I see that my su binary is outdate. So I select update, tells me
new version = 3.1
installed version = 3.0.3.2
So i press the update button
[..]
new binary will be downloaded ... okay!
getting root-access... failed! (pop up comes and tells that superuser root access has been granted)
strange thing is all root access is working as expected (adfree, es file explorer, etc), uninstalled superuser, reinstalled it, tried again, no luck, booted a couple of times, no luck
Sure this update isnt really necessary but still I would like to update. On my GTab 10.1 it worked without a problem.
Searched xda forums for this bug and asked google, no luck.
Any hint for me?
Thanks
I read in one of the other forums that this is a problem with the 4.0.4 and above (jelly bean) versions. There is actually an updated version of the SU.zip in the androidcentral forum:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ge...ry-update-gaining-root-access-fail-error.html
it is the fourth post, and the link it gives you is actually here in xda, but I´m at work and cannot log in android central. If you dont already have android central account, register and download it.
Reflash the SU.zip though ADB (as you did the first time you rooted) and the problem should be fixed.
I think you mean this posting:
There is currently a problem with the su.zip used in GSM GNex with 4.0.4, in order to make Superuser work properly, just instal [Only registered users can view links. ] (ClockworkMod flashable) and Viola! Problem fixed.

I found this su.zip on an other android forum but all are talking about flashing via CWM. Well I am on stock rom without CWM and I am not planing to install it just now before jelly bean comes out. Then I wont receive the OTA update etc.
Guess I will stay then with my current version (root access is indeed working) and wait for jelly bean and then will have a look again how to root when it has been discovered.
I thank you very much for your information, I am also sitting at work
So I just picked up a sprint galaxy nexus and so far I like it...Kinda wondering why i keep getting a notification that chrome has a update but it fails to install. I have tried clearing the data for the market and chrome app. I have even did a ODIN restor back to stock to try to backup my google wallet so I could use it even tho I was rooted. (unsucessful). Anyone have any other ideas? I had this issue by the time I got home with the phone before I even had a chance to mess with it lol. I left and it started the JB update after that some apps updated but chrome failed. I played around a bit and ignored it..But then after doing rooting and unlocked boot loader it tried doing the update again and failed. Then I was messing around with google wallet and relized I needed to setup pre-root and odin'd back to stock and again after that the chrome update failed...still not sure which browser going to use as primary but it seems very weird. other than Root/boot loader and nova launcher I have not done anything to the phone.
why do you keep using odin?
use fastboot, it's the officially supported tool, even Google uses and has tutorials on it.
if you have CWM installed, then the official update will NOT work when started from android os.
that said, if you have root access, you can just remount /system to rw and uninstall/delete chrome apk from /system/app.

I did try fastboot's restore the first time but it just went to the dead (or whatever) android guy so I looked on the forums and saw a thread with a sticky about removing root/going back to stock so just did that and it showed odin. Thanks for the suggestion I will give it a try later when I have a few spare mins to play.
So, my sprint GS3 is rooted with SuperSu pro. The Android version that is on my phone is version 4.1.1 I never had a problem with the phone until one day it prompted me to upgrade the software and I accepted. The update was never successful. I have a picture attached that shows error message it gave. SuperSU pros' icon also doesn't show up anymore on my phone. My phone is still rooted because I can use Titanium back up pro. It has been acting up more and more ever since that first error message.
I've tried searching for similar problems on this website as well as on others but haven't found anything that's similar. I hope the picture helps and someone else who's experienced a similar problem can shed some light on mine because it's driving me crazy.
Have you verified Root, like with Root Checker ? It's Free in the Play Store. Have you tried to Update SU ?
It sounds like you were rooted and tried to get the 4.3 update. Luckily for you it didn't take. If you want 4.3, I would suggest you flash the Knox free version. Just follow the install instructions in the OP and it'll get you back rooted. If you want to stay on 4.1, try flashing super su update through cwm if it won't install from the play store.
