Xperia Play Android 2.3.3 push errors - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that Verizon has been getting some flak for the 2.3.4 update having a push notifications bug, but it seems the problem might be extending a bit further.
I'm running Android 2.3.3 on my rooted R800x from Verizon, and it too is having push notification problems.
I've had the problem off and on for the past week or two, where my wifi and data connection bars will turn from green to white, and I'll stop receiving notifications for things like facebook, twitter, and email. Every few days it will turn back on, and I'll get tons of notifications all at once.
I can't even update the OS either OTA, or with the PC Companion tool (it keeps telling me it needs to be updated, but can't find the update, even though I downloaded it fresh from the Sony site) and my bootloader isn't unlocked, so I'm not sure if flashtool would work.
I have CWM installed using X-Parts from the market, so I was working a bit with it, and found out that if I clear the cache, and Dalvik cache, that the connection bars will turn green briefly when it boots up, but after a few minutes, will go back to white.
I really love this phone, and I'd rather not have to buy a new one. I'd also like to keep my data, but if it comes down to it, I'll do a factory reset.

White 3G/WiFi/Signal Bars indicates google services have been interrupted. If you have really bad service in your area that may be the cause. 2.3.4 broke Gtalk so all push notifications will no longer work. I would occasionally come across this problem on 2.3.3 from time to time, usually in not so good areas, I fixed it by turning air plane mode on and then off. But that is just a temporary fix. I've been using Cola rom for quiet some time now and I've yet to get white 3G/WiFi/Signal, the only time these are white is when I'm completely out of service (areas @ work) so this leads me to believe that 2.3.3 Verizon Stock ROM is flawed.
I'd suggest Cola.

The problem is that I've been having this problem even at home, on wifi. Getting full bars on both wifi and data, and they're still white.
I'd LOVE to use a different rom, like Cola, or Cyanogen, but how would I do that with a locked bootloaded? Or is there some way to unlock it now? I haven't really been up to date, but the last time I searched, I found a solution that you needed to pay for to unlock it.

The unlocking method just became free, don't ask me how to do it because I payed to get mine unlocked, cola does not require you to have an unlocked bootloader that is (one of the reasons) why I recommend it.

Ah, thank you so much, I'll look into unlocking soon.
Though, I WOULD like to point out that I think I fixed the problem.
I've been getting the "Low Storage" notification ever since this problem started, so I moved a few apps to the SD card, uninstalled some, and now it's back up, connected, and syncing my emails and stuff now.
Don't really know why storage would matter...but I guess it does.

Updated to 1.28 on Three UK

I was running the stock 1.26 version and it was perfect. No flickering, very smooth, but the phone kept bugging me for the update, so I updated it. Update went smooth, but now I have that terrible screen flicker, it's by far not as smooth... so if you have no problems with 1.26, don't update. I'll revert to 1.26 and hope that it goes back to being as flawless as it was before.
Edit: Just noticed that wireless connections are much worse as well with this update. At the moment I can only use WiFi and even that doesn't work properly for some reason (i.e. can surf but can't get to beta.swype.com - but I can get there on my desktop using the same WLAN). All borked...
You are one of the only people who has said this about the 1.28 update. Also you can't revert unless you get a new phone with 1.26 as your HBOOT was updated when you installed this update.
Yes, I just noticed that . So until 3 come up with a better update, I'm stuck with this junk Should have stuck to my usual motto: Don't fix it if it ain't broke.
Updated mine on the day I got the phone not noticed any screen flicker at all and I have been looking for it. Dont use Wifi as the 3's 3G is plenty fast enough and I have all you can eat data so can't comment on that. Data connection is FAR more stable than on the ONE S which I swapped it for.
I don't know but this update has royally screwed my phone. Each time the alarm is supposed to go off, the phone reboots (no matter which alarm app I use). I also get reboots for random other apps.
For me it's just a real PITA and at the moment, I would consider the phone unreliable at best. I'll try flashing the 1.28 from Three again but I'm not holding my breath
Just wish I could go back to 1.26.
Edit: I just flashed Energy ROM and the phone still reboots when using Alarm Clock Extreme. It's just sooooooooo annoying!
Isn't there any way to go back to 1.26?
Edit2: After the phone just rebooted, it rebooted again when I was just looking at the notification screen.
Is it a problem with Three UK if the phone has been unlocked? I feel very much inclined to return the phone and get a replacement... phone is unsuable at the moment as a smartphone...
Edit 3: I can't even re-flash it... updater says "can't update this". Oh gosh, Three, please make it fast to the next update.

[Q] New to gio

Hi,
First post, feels like I'm a little late to the party. I have a gio which initially had gingerbread 2.3.3. The phone is unlocked, and rooted, and has the clock work mod recovery patch on it. I have tried a couple of different versions of gingerbread, and am now running ice cream sandwich: kernel 2.6.35-7-galaxyics, CyanogenMod version build 9-20120610-UNOFFICIAL-gio, build number IMM76L.
Firmware-wise, it's mostly good, but I'm having a couple of weird issues:
1. The screen goes black on me periodically, and won't come back without pushing the on/off button. This is happening every 30 to 60 seconds of use.
2. The wifi crashes, a lot. With the older gingerbread I would get the word "error" under wifi in settings, and couldn't turn it back on. I would enter *#*#526#*#* to bring it back, but every 5 minutes seems a little excessive.
With the newer ICS, I've noticed I can play on a wifi link all day long without issue, but as soon as I set the phone down for a couple of minutes, wifi stops working. If I go into settings, wifi is on, but there's no connection. If I turn wifi off and back on, it comes back to life.
I guess, I'm wondering if these indicate more of a hardware issue than a software issue. It's hard to ask for support from my carrier, given I'm using an unlocked phone bought from a 3rd party, and have no contract.

I got that problem to sometime ,
And welcome !
send from my galaxy gio with paranoidAndroid Rom
Errors that you describe has a lot of people
The team is now working on ICS AOSP so be patient wait a little meringue as soon
And yet you propose to install something else that any CM
In total there is this quite a bit
update
A couple of things I've noticed:
1. The resetting wifi problem does not happen when the phone is plugged into USB.
2. The screen turning off happens frequently, but about 1/2 of the time, the screen will turn off for 1-2 seconds, then come back on at full brightness; the rest of the time, it will not come back on at all, but still responds to being tapped. The only way to get it back is to push the on/off button on the side twice, but then the screen is locked, and has to be swiped to unlock.
I have picked up a second phone, a 5660M running stock gingerbread 2.3.4, unlocked and rooted; not experiencing either of the two above issues (and the camera preview works). If I could take the 5660 back to stock at this point, I would prefer that, as the phone is not usable with these problems. Is there a stock rom available for this phone somewhere?
update part II
Hmm, after the phone showed up with 2.3.3 claiming to be a gt-s5660, and was sold as such, I finally put 1 & 1 together. I checked under the battery, it's a gt-s5660m. That explains probably all of the problems I've been having. Pity there's no ICS build for the M version of the phone.
You can use cm9 ics on your M model, it only changes your device id to gt-s5660, just dont flash roms with ODIN except roms for the M model.
Flashing from recovery wont install a baseband, with ODIN it mostly does, so the only roms you cant flash are old roms that still need odin like gioprio.
Flashable .zips are fine, all of them

The wifi problem might be hardware, m8
I don't know, as my gio has some strange problems as well and I've had ICS, Adrenaline ROMs, everything, and the problems still persist. At least they're not really bad to handle in everyday use but still, they're annoying.
Go to wifi settings - advanced - sleep policy- never

update part III
Since going back to GINGERBREAD.MUGKG3 / 2.3.4 for the GT-S5660M, the wifi crashing and screen blanking behaviours have completely stopped. After two days of running, wifi has not shut-off unexpectedly even once, and the screen does not blank any more at all.
The gps works now; it was not before. It used to sit for up to an hour under a clear open sky, day or night, and never acquire a single satellite. Now it picks them up within 30-60 seconds, though a full lock does take a couple of minutes.
The phone previously always indicated it was roaming, and would frequently refuse to send texts or make calls. I would get full bars for signal strength, but no connectivity.
I even got hold of the fm radio app, which was not included with the M version of the 5660, and manually installed it (phone must be rooted, and file system must be mounted read/write). It works too; a nice bonus.
The camera works, but is a bit flaky, requiring an occasional restart to get it going.
Probably the biggest headache, after flashing back to the 5660M version, was that the phone locked itself again, and wouldn't work on my network. I dumped bml5 page and searched out the unlock code. I had some trouble with this. The search string to get close to the code is supposed to be a sequence of twenty 0x00 bytes, one 0x05 byte, and fourteen 0xff bytes. The 0xff bytes weren't there, and it took a while for me to clue in that if I searched on the twenty 0x00, and single 0x05 byte sequence, I could still pull it out. I got it, and wrote it down in case this happens again.
sms issue
Still ticking along with the GT-S5660M; mostly it's all working nicely. I have one question though: I recently ran out of memory for storing SMS messages. It looks like the texting app in the phone wants to put everything on the SIM card rather than on the SD card, but there's no option for moving the default storage location for messages. Is there a simple way to do this? The phone is unlocked & rooted, but does not have the ext2 file system on it.
What's the IC? I checked under the battery to confirm mine is a Canada model, and it is.
But my IC is GT-S5660L

HTC One X Messaging Issues

Hi guys, this problem just started to occur. I heard a notification sound from my phone which should have been the email tone but I was busy so i didn't check it. I noticed the sound was a little cut off at the end though. Then almost immediately afterwards, I got the sound for a new SMS. Then I checked my phone but I couldn't see any emails from before although there was a new SMS. When I tried to open the message, it would go into the Messaging app but then it would get stuck on a loading screen when I try to actually enter the message. When I go back to the main messaging screen, I can still see all my past messages, but each time I try to go into one, it'd get stuck on the loading screen. Eventually after maybe 3 minutes it finally went into the newest message i got, but when i tried to send a reply it would act like nothing's happened. The message i typed just disappeared. When I went back to the main messaging screen, I was able to see my message in the previews, but when i go back into that conversation, it would be stuck on the loading screen and now nothing is loading. This is really annoying. I haven't really used my phone in the last 6 hours and before that everything worked perfectly.
On another note, I'm noticing that during the night, my phone uses up about 30% of the battery just on idle. I have wi-fi turned on but is this normal? I only slept for 6 hours...by the way, the battery charging all seemed normal before but now I just plugged in my phone about 1.5 hours ago and it's only increased by about 3 percent...
My phone is not rooted and has been updated recently to the latest version. I also have Lookout Security installed. Any help would really be appreciated!
Update: I just noticed that my phone was blinking red and green one after another. After checking it seems to indicated that it's because it is overheating so i've now disconnected the charger and turned it off. But i can't think why it would be overheating. It's placed on a wooden table away from sunlight and any heat sources and like i mentioned earlier, I haven't really touched it in the last 6 hours so I was definitely not using anything intensive.
Did restarting fix the messaging problem ?
What apps have the highest % for battery use ?
Well, your phone probably was doing something intensive.
Maybe your antivirus was upset by the email or message.
@PhoenixFx: Yeah i did restart the phone which didn't help. I even turned the phone off for 30 minutes which cooled it down but as soon as i turned it back on, it started to get hot again. Whilst it was turned off i had it charging and then when it came back on i noticed the battery percentage increased much more so the battery was definitely fine. The process which used the most power was Viber which was at 9%, there were a couple of other processes but they were all under 5%. I even uninstalled Viber which didn't help. Looking at all the processes that were running, I couldn't see anything that was abnormal.

That could be but I don't see why it would. The message was just a regular text message.
Anyways, I have now done a factory reset and it seems to be fine again. But if anyone has ever come across this or know the solution, please let us know so if it happens again, I'll know what to do and it would also help others who experiences the same thing. By the way, how much SHOULD the battery drain overnight with the wifi turned on?
You may have gotten a virus. I got a gmail virus that wiped a lot of my emails and wouldnt let me receive. I know this is about messaging but they are made by google so it is a possibility. I suggest a full restore and to run a virus scan with one of the play store's antiviruses.

I had the same problem with the messages. They wouldn't open or they would take a lifetime to load and open. Resetting and **** wouldnt work so I did a re-install of my ROM, wouldnt work, so I did factory wipe and started fresh. So far so good.

Yeah I'm not having any issues so far. Of course, it could've been a virus but I scanned my phone regularly with Lookout and also when it happened. Very weird. Anyways, if it happens again, I'll post back. Certainly hope not, this was the second time in a month I had to do a factory reset (last time was when I updated to Sense 4.1 and for some reason it wiped my phone and didn't even do the update. I had to make it download the update again for it to install...)
Ok, it's just happened again. First i heard the notification sound for an email, but then when i turned on the screen, i couldn't see any notifications. Now when i go into my SMS, they take forever (literally) to load. This is really getting pathetic. The amount of problems i've had with this phone, not to mention the constant "loading" screen when i press the home key. FFS, i never had this many problems with my old iPhone 3GS.
Update: I've just done a scan with AVG and Lookout and both turned up nothing. Most likely that this is not a virus related issue then.
this is happening on the stock 2.17 firmware also
no notifications, if you look in the messaging app, new messages are there
i cant understand how htc cant fix this? its been present from 1.28 fw

a gmail virus? care to explain a bit more, like the name of it etc? i did have some problems where it wouldn't sync with the latest version but is now working ok..
If you text a hell of a lot like I do then the problem is the phone is trying to load all of the message threads as fast as possible. Which uses a **** ton of your RAM, hence the 3 minute wait. I current have the HTC one x+ but the phones are basically the same. Here's what i did for the same exact issues.
For constant overheating:
1.Let your phone die.
2.Put your phone in your freezer and let it sit for a few minutes until its pretty cold.
3.Fully charge your phone
4.If you havnt already done so, download the latest update for your phone
5.Turn on and keep the battery saver option on. You do not have to keep the brightness low though
For messaging issues:
Go in your messages and delete all of your old threads to people whom you no longer converse with.

[Q] No Notification Light

I've noticed over the past couple of days with my M8 that the notification light doesn't activate for anything but charging. I see that many people with Verizon versions are complaining of the same issue. Is anyone else experiencing this on their's? I already know that the only thing Tmo will tell me to try is a factory reset, or have the phone replaced (both a hassle this far into ownership).

You may just want to RMA it so you have a new phone instead of finding something later down the line thats major. T-Mo will usually send you your replacement first and you mail your messed up one back. You could also just take it back to the store and do an exchange (I think) since it's within the 14 day period.
I've noticed it too. I get the amber light when charging and green when done, but thats it. I feel its more of a software bug than anything to do with the hardware.
Have you checked the "Notification Lights" setting under Display? It lets you choose which actions will activate the light.
That said, I have noticed the light is pretty minimal when compared to the SGS series notification lights. Additionally, I do not see a stock option to change the color of the light but no doubt that will come in time with Cyanogen Mod.
Booted into safe mode, tested the LEDs, they work fine. IMO, its definitely a software issue. Also, not sure if this is for everyone but booting into safemode also hoses your home screens. Now I have to redo all my folders.

I did check and play with that, yes. I even downloaded Lightflow with no success. I'm going to lean toward it being a software issue. Hopefully a patch gets compiled at some point.
small update. I was really wanted the stupid notification led to work. I didn't realize how much I looked at it when I'm at work. So I decided to wipe and start over. I made a nandroid backup just in case nothing worked and wiped. I read around the internet that if you don't log into your google account after the wipe, let it do its stuff that it would work so I did. Before I logged into my google account my wife texted me and bam, it worked. Ok, so far so good. I logged in and it still worked. Well, I don't want to go and redownload all my apps so I went into the custom recovery (Yes, I'm rooted and am using the rom in the development section that is rooted, deodexed and a few more things, but the rest is stock) and restored just the data partition. All my apps came back and the LED stopped. WTF is up with that!? I looked at all my apps and nothing was there that would affect the LED. I decided to use Titanium Backup and got all my apps backed up, wiped again, didn't log in to my google account until after the phone fully booted. Logged in, restored my apps via titanium backup and boom, the led was working and is still working. I also use an app called Helium to keep a few apps backed up to my Google Drive and happened to have my homescreen settings backed up (folders, background, etc) and restored that. All my folders came back and the LED still worked. I now have a working notification LED!
Another small thing too. I noticed that when I let my phone boot up before logging into my account, the experience was a little different. Certain things loaded on the phone that didn't load before. My only thought on that is that I had two Samsung phones before this one that maybe something downloaded from my google account, some setting it kept backed up for me, that broke the LED. If you don't log into the account until after you let it fully boot, there is no option to restore your settings from google. It all starts new.
the backup utility I use is called Helium. You CAN use it without root. YOu have to plug into your computer after each reboot but then it will work without being connected. It'll backup the apps data and restore it after you redownload it from the appstore and can also backup both the app and data. It'll backup the homescreens settings like folders. No, I'm not plugging it but its a huge time saver.
Anywho, I now have a working LED for notifications and that is the process i used. Its annoying but I'm glad it works now. Being able to backup and restore my apps is the only reason I did it. That process can be very long and annoying so being able to restore them all in 3 minutes is the only reason why I did the process.
Hope this helps someone and helps to realize its a software bug and not a physical bug.
My LED is working for notifications I just can't alter the color which is a bummer.

There was an issue like this with the m7, or at least the sprint version. It was after the first update they pushed, 4.3 maybe, though I'm not sure. If you installed the update you were fine, but if you installed it and then had to do a factory reset, if you signed in on the first boot up, the light wouldn't work. You had to let it boot to the sign in screen, restart, then sign in in order to get it to work right. It was really odd.
So I just got my phone. Do I have to wipe it and start over to get the damn notification light to work?? Kinda irritated...

If its not working, yes. Annoying as hell but I am glad I took the time to do what my above post says. I guess I never realized how much I looked at the light.
Man, it was working for a bit, but only for gmail apparently.
I wonder, do the people that convert to the GPE RUU or flash a GPE rom have the same problem?
Yeah, the LED is definitely won't, but I also think it's a software thing. As long as it lights up when charging, the hardware is working, so... Sense bug. They also don't give you many options in the Settings as someone pointed out. I notice the issue more when using 3rd party apps, the stock Sense apps seem to be mostly working fine.
Remember - if you in any way shape or form are using any part of "do not disturb" - while it's enabled, there are no LED's as well and sounds and vibrations.
Yeah mine only works for charging. I tried restoring fresh (not rooted so didn't do titanium with old settings), however I did restore from HTC Backup. Mostly did it for my text messages. I may decide to restore one more time just to see if it works, but really this is software related. HTC should patch it up.
If anyone is still having this problem, theres an app in the play store that fixes this. Install it, run it once and uninstall. My notification light works perfectly now.

Greyed out WiFi button, WiFi won't start.

Stock/no root Tmo Note 3, with latest nk3 firmware update (ota) , WiFi won't turn on. In notification panel you tap WiFi button and it hangs partially green but not fully bright green, doesn't connect. In settings slide button is grayish but no connection, won't slide to off just sits there not connecting. A restart will put switch back to off, mobile network works fine just can't get WiFi to start.
Sometimes it works after phone sits for a while. Basic apps installed no facebook app or weird games.
This condition started recently out of nowhere, no problems after ota back in November, phone has same case since new back in Oct/2013 , phone has not been dropped or dunked in toilet.
No flashing or root attempts, download mode and stock recovery can be accessed. Not looking to flash custom ROM, rooting is a possible option if needed to solve issue.

hey bro i have exactly the same problem , but my case is slightly different i am having this problem since i have rooted my phone now i just cant find any way to solve it , i just think its a hardware problem. if u come to find any solution plz dont forget to post it here. i am waiting for ur reply.
Will do that, been looking around but nothing yet, have read a bunch of stuff in Google, similar but not the same issue.
I'm suspecting the modem but have not attempted to flash or look for modem file yet.
Not sure if I'm going to find it here anyway, this Note 3 thread is the lamest thread here, I see a lot of questions asked here that go unanswered, I have asked questions in the past that got no response, and simply ones too.
I also follow the T-Mobile S4 thread and there you get a ton of activity but here, it's like pulling teeth.
Anyway I will post back for your sake if I figure out something.

Tried reseting modem with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52735067
but still acting up now and then .
But toggling "airplane mode" on/off un-greys wifi button and it works smoothly.

So, the device has always been stock, never been rooted or anything, never had any custom firmware on it? I am understanding this correctly? And that being the case, this means the device has also never had the data partition scrubbed?
Honestly, I would strongly recommend wiping the device and installing the NK3 firmware via odin. I'm not sure you are going to find a solution.
One thing you can do first, is root the device, and download the app "LogcatX".. open the app, run a logcat, then hit that wifi toggle. Save the logcat and post it here.
I highly doubt this is fixable without a re-install of the OS, however.
Good luck
I had considered root just for debloating purposes and re-flashin the firmware but with an update around the corner I can toggle airplane mode for a bit longer.
I like stock touchwiz and also need reliability from the phone so won't be considering a custom rom.

Use Tweaked ROM. It's more reliable than stock.
Kind of funny, you mention you need reliability and because of that you won't root and install custom firmware. Yet, your device is bone stock and your WiFi is broken. Lol.
Think about it.
Wifi is just an extra, I rely more on my unlimited data plan and living in the metropolitan area LTE is always strong and plentiful. Wifi comes in handy when downloading huge files, pdf's and some large images (work related )
and using download boost. Wifi calling is handy also to have but haven't really needed it.
So it's nice to have working. But not the end of the world.
