Perfect ! Been waiting for this ! Seen it in my newsfeed as well!
I'm excited. The ported releases showed a lot of promise but were just too buggy for me. They did however fix a major bluetooth bug that has plagued both Samsung devices I've used with ICS (SII LTE, SIII) my car.
Looks like we may get it before AT&T users too.
Bastards!!

So does Samsung control the updates like they did with some of the galaxy nexus models? Or is this only for certain carriers?

Samsung released the OS to the carriers months ago presumably. The carriers tested it and bloated them up. Samsung stated that it will begin rolling out on Monday so I would assume this means at least the Big 3 will begin rolling it out first.

I asked bell a week ago on twitter and they told me 6-8 weeks..... and when i asked samsung about bell telling me that they didnt answer.... so iono i really dont think we are gonna see it monday...
I agree. Maybe one carrier will push the ota but all three on same day sounds too good to be true. I bought an unlocked telus model yesterday, knowing my luck telus won't release update until 2013 lol. Heres hoping it's all 3 major carriers!

You can't take anything the carrier says as truth. Their reps do not know the answer and anything they give is purely speculation or a rumour they are pushing forward. Carrier reps always find out a day before or on the day of release for the most part about new services/features.
This news came directly from Samsung. Does this mean everyone will get the update on Monday? Probably not but we should start seeing some staggering rollouts to customers and to the rest with each passing day.
I'll start unfreezing my Rogers and Samsung bloat in TBP on Sunday in hopes I get the update on Monday.
I'll wait for a CWM/TWRP flashable version... It's bound to happen shortly once it is released... Otherwise I'll have to unroot or something...
This is fantastic news, and great timing for all of us who snagged one over the weekend through the Black Friday deal for $0 from Telus. I already love this phone as it is!

Do you mean your work newsfeed at bell?
Hopefully we still be getting very soon. I was so used to 4.1.1 on my galaxy nexus
When I had Galaxy Note, Big 3 released the Ice Cream Sandwich update on the same day.
It is not something unbelievable.

Doubt it will be Monday. Doesn't the carriers have to add bloat and test it on the network? I would say close to the 15th.
Once it is released people will start complaining about when 4.2.1 will be released. Want the fastest android updates? Get a nexus. Want the best hardware? Don't get a nexus and go cm custom rom. I wouldn't be surprised if cm10.1 was released before 4.1.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747M
If Samsung is announcing the availability, it means the carriers have already tested it and are ready to release it. It may be all of them, it may only be one or two to start, but some Canadian Galaxy S III owners should get the upgrade notice on Monday.

they said 'it will be available as an ota update on monday' meaning that it's already been tested my carriers. and it doesn't take a week for carriers to test it, more like months and months with the snail pace they usually go by. the update's been out for months internationally, and weeks for tmo and sprint.can't wait for google now! missed it coming from my nexus s

I hope that Bell will add support for HD Voice in this release! They support the Note II after all.

There is a hardware dependency for this. IIRC, the GS3 does not have a wideband receiver.

Hey Just passing this along. Idk if our phone will get the update but since the galaxy sII is on the list there is a good chance.

Yes the official release may take some time, if ever, to get to us. But we might just some leaked builds along the way that would be more than useful.

I really hope we get some JellyBean goodness, if not, sprint can go shove it!
We will get official Jelly Bean. It's not happening right away, but it will happen.
Our phone is CDMA which is one major reason that we won't see an update as quickly as the international SGS2…

If its anything like the moment or epic, it will be when the phone is at its end of life and no longer sold in the stores. Oh, and it will probably be the last official youll see.
I don't expect to see a jelly bean update for this phone. I would genuinely be surprised if it sees official jb.
Although they said the sgsII that doesn't mean the epic 4g touch variant. More stuff to support and more stuff to go wrong that becomes sprints problem. Also, people would see how capable this exynos really is and not go get an sgs3, with the only differences being the screen and a 4g chip you're never gonna use anyway, because sprint wants the world to buy iphones. I'm getting off this sinking ship and switching to verizon asap.

The epic branding has been retired, its now the sph-d710 galaxy s2, Samsung has promised support for a minimum of 18months after release on all devices starting with the gs2 series so we will more than likely get official JB, and it won't take as long as ICS since the upgrade from ICS to JB isn't as intensive as from GB to ICS was. Samsung has sworn off carrier branded devices and starting with the sgs3 all devices will be nearly identical except for the few differences for network compatibility. Mostly radios and modems, otherwise hardware and software will now be as close to exactly the same as the original international variant and all devices will be available on all carriers as close to the same release date as possible.

I'm trying to decide between the note 2 and the new nexus for my personal line, whichever I don't get for it ill be adding on my work line, ill prob be getting the sgs3 on my personal line and putting the et4g on my work line when the note 2 launches until my upgrade comes up in the beginning of Dec. My dads got the sgs3 and will be preordering the note 2 so ill get the sgs3 once his note comes in. That's one good thing about having a technophile for a dad he buys a new phone off contract everytime it drops and gives me his old one so i don't have to use up upgrades too often unless I want a nexus or something he hasn't bought yet. He's been sticking with Samsung since the et4g launched, which I'm fine with I got sick of dealing with HTC and their locked up bootloaders after the GB update on the og evo and after the moto photon I won't ever buy another moto device that thing sucked to try and mod, I can't go with a device that you have to sacrifice something to be able to flash

They won't do a pure Android release of Jelly Bean I don't think because it would be too much of a change for regular people, even though most of us would love it. We will probably be able to get it through sprint id though. I wish they would change the colors in tw to stock Android blue though, so much better then green and white.

Apparently, Samsung still has a lot to learn with respect to providing their customers with a consistent message throughout the medias...
Yesterday afternoon on MobileSyrup.com, a Canadian based mobile news/reviews site...
Samsung Canada: Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III upgrade to Jelly Bean will arrive “before the holidays”
Now, this morning on TGDaily...
Galaxy S III Jelly Bean update may be in 2013
Ok, TGDaily provides no source to their information but still... this is kinda confusing and I would expect a company like Samsung to get their act together, don't you ?
I just ran into this Samsung announcement at BGR... There appears to be no specific timeline for the carriers.

Well both of those articles could be and probably are accurate. The galaxy s3 and notes on one or more of the Canadian networks will likely begin to receive jb during the holidays - mobile syrup is probably right on here.
And I'm sure tg daily is exactly right when it says some of the major US networks galaxy s3's will not get jb to 2013.
This information seems quite inline with what is going on - I'm not sure what you see as being contradictory or confusing.

I have to agree and disagree at the same time. I have had multiple Samsung android phones, and multiple Motorola android phones. Samsung is already pushing out the JB update for their international S3, the only one that they have full control over the updates. Ours has to go through at least a month of carrier testing before att will push it out. The i747 updates even come off of ATTs server. All of the variants have their software pushed out by the carrier, which takes a lot longer. Samsung has had one of the fastest rollouts of JB on the international S3. Moto is much slower than Samsung, or at least have been in the past. This may change now that Google owns Moto. Even the Verizon Nexus JUST got JB, but the international has had it for a while. If you want timely updates, buy an international version of a phone.

Right, didn't see it this way.
It just seems odd that us canadians would be updated before you guys down south
I don't really think timing is Canadian or US dependent, but CARRIER dependent. The fact that the US & Canadian announcements above came out a day apart strongly suggests that Samsung will simultaneously provide the North American SG3 carriers with their updates and then release dates will be determined by the carriers.
Samsung must have already released the update to the carriers ... hence the announcements.
Considering there is a bell jelly bean leak i would say the carriers have had jelly bean for atleast a month now. I expect bell to release it first

I would assume if you made it to xda you would stop blaming Samsung for carrier variants of phones getting updates. Whatever process carriers have to do to add there bloat has nothing to do with Samsung.
Blame AT&T bell T-Mobile etc.

If Samsung hasn't already given the update to all the carriers, they must of already given it to some of them. And I'm sure all the carriers will get something from Samsung (if not already) within the next two months. Then it will be up p to the carriers - some of which will take several months to get their respective customers.

This is one of the reasons why I kept my Galaxy Nexus. As much as I like my GS3, software overlays and carrier interference typically spells extensive update delays.
Who has already updated phones to Jelly Bean? I don't really see a reason to complain. Or at least not to complain about a single device manufacturer. Samsung is generally pretty fast with updates compared to others. Either way they are dev friendly so that means you should have a custom update within a month of release to AOSP.
Do AT&T leaks show up on any AT&T servers? Or is the reason we don't have leaks because it is impossible to find them?

The att leaks I have seen for previous Samsung phones were usually the result of someone who knew someone on the inside. I'm sure some of the time the leaks were intentionally put out by att for some free bug testing by the development community.
Design gears is one dev who at least in the past had a source - though I don't know how much dg spends on At&t phones or if he still has his connections. Also dg does not seem to spend much time on xda any more.

I don't see why people feel the need to say this about Samsung. This is fact for EVERY Android device other than the Nexus. LG/HTC/etc updates are no better, sometimes a slight ahead or slight behind, but they all take forever.
We all seem to be missing the point of updates. Its not the ROM itself, its the source code that we want.
so this has been a terrible issue with samsung since the galaxy s 1 days... im sick and tired of slow updates.. whats your thoughts on this ? will it change your mind on what phone to get next?

IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.

Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

First, 4.2 will not be key lime pie.
Second, its not Samsungs fault, its the carriers.
And being the carriers fault - you have to wonder. Do they each only have like 2 people working on the Updates...or wtf. lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!

this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...
Sweet!
Just a rumor though. Hopefully it's true! And usually Sammobile is very accurate.

Your Source (SamMobile) really doesn't pay much attention to US Spec phones. If you notice they are talking about international models. I wouldn't extrapolate that info to mean anything about our phones.

With our phones, it's not just up to Samsung. Qualcomm (because of CDMA tweaks) and Sprint are also involved in producing the ROMs.

Sprint is not going to waste their time updating a phone from two generations ago (GS2) to Jellybean when the GS4 is coming with Jellybean! That would be a big marketing mistake on Sprint's part. Not to mention the whole CDMA thing which complicates matters even more. We all Sprint is the least profitable of the big 4 US carriers so they aren't going to shoot themselves in the foot like that. Not to mention, those subscribers who still have the GS2 will not be as excited to upgrade to the GS4 if the android version is the same. Sprint wants them to upgrade! GS2 and GS3 will not get these updates from Sprint I am willing to put money on it lol.

Um ok, GS3 already has jellybean and GS2 has had multiple jellybean leaked roms so we know they are working on it. Keep in mind the cdma GS2 was just released for Boost and Virgin Mobile within the past couple months and has not been put on end of life by sprint yet, so it is still receiving support funding for software updates.
Also if you were familiar with the update life cycle of top tier samsung phones on sprint e.g. The GS1 & GS2 you would see 2 full years of android version upgrades is the norm not the exception. Look for the GS2 to get 4.1.2 and be EOL end of this year, and the GS3 to get its final update next year and EOL end of next year.

Premium Suite still hasn't made it to USA S3s. It's not anywhere near a sure thing GS3 will get Android K. My guess is 4.2 with premium suite and some GS4 features after GS4 has been available in the market for a good while, then Sammy will be pretty much done with GS3.

Samsung like to update their U.S phones with the latest features after the launch It's newest flagship. So, after the GS4 is available in the US that's when we'll see an update.

Honestly, as far as Carriers go, I believe Sprint is the best when it comes to OS updates. AT&T probably comes in second. And I'm basing this off carrier-specific phones, not international devices on GSM carriers.

Sprint was bought by Softbank by the way. They have mass amounts of money to spend. And they are not 4th in profits. Basically your whole statement is false. http://allthingsd.com/20130318/hesse-masayoshi-son-met-with-fcc-to-pitch-softbank-sprint-deal/

I don't understand why anyone is surprised by this. Every Galaxy S phone has been updated to two major versions of android.
Galaxy S (eclair) - froyo and gingerbread
GSII (gingerbread) - ICS and jelly bean
It only makes sense that that the gs3 would get the same treatment and be updated to Key Lime Pie when it's only had one major update (jelly bean)

I really like the phone as is, but 4.2 is pretty sweet!!!!
I believe we will get it, but they are focused on getting the GS4 selling right now so they will likely wait another 6 months or so.
Right now, you gotta pay to play with the official 4.2 phones.....or go the CM10 route which has bugs.

I don't see the S2 getting Jelly Bean 4.2 update. That phone is to old for that. I see the S3 getting the 4.2 update though, but probably not the 5.0 though. By then most will have upgraded to the S4 or whatever Samsung has out.

I respectfully disagree. After looking at the specs for the s4, I think most people will probably hold out for the S 5. It looks like some minimal hardware upgrades and mostly software upgrades, which I believe the s3 will handle very easily. just my humble opinion though
All Battery results are on a 6300mah battery, unless otherwise noted!
We'll have to wait an see. Would rather get one that is tested and none to work then see them push to release one that is buggy.
Hopefully 4.2 comes to the us galaxy s3 none of them got premium suite update feature just the 4.1.2 that's all
It could also be that Samsung, not the carriers, puts the brakes on the S3 in favor of selling (forcing) the S4. Like when Moto stopped supporting the Photon (then a flagship device) within 6 months in order to sell more new "flagship devices" rather than update existing usable consumer products. Consumers who bought into the "latest, greatest" Moto had to offer at the time thinking they would be good for at least a couple years of contract.
It's a double edge sword where someone is going to get cut, no matter if it's from the carrier who doesn't want to spend the money to add their junk, or the manufacture who doesn't want to update "old" products.
With the devices of today, and the power they have, I see the trend moving more and more to the rooting/dev. arena to make existing devices more usable for longer periods of time.
Tech is so far advanced that now, within the terms of a typical 2 year contract, not much can be added to make a consumer justify the cost unless they just HAVE to be "better" than anyone else.
Having said that, the easiest way to continue new sales is to stop developing/supporting "older" devices.
Do you think we're ever going to get JB 4.2.x Official? I heard they were going to announce it along with the Galaxy S4 but I never heard anything about it.

Yes, just not any time soon. Samsung can officially supporting the SGS3 after the 18 month release period has expired (according to the Open Handset Alliance).
The restrictions that we are experiencing is from our carriers.

hahah trying not to laugh.... but waiting for AT&T to get 4.2.x? that's a long way...consider we have yet to get 4.1.2 (not premium suite)
ICS was pushed out on the Skyrocket and SGS2 a few weeks before the GS3 came out and JB was pushed out to the GS3 a bit after the Note 2
Safe to assume June or July to correspond to the price drop when the GS4 comes out. Sell phones with 4.2 stock...then again I don;t see the skyrocket getting 4.1 anytime soon and the i777 never will (except thanks to SHOstock's awesome ROM)
I had to give up on AT&T's updates after waiting a year to get Froyo back when I got my Captivate. Samsung got the updates out quick enough, but AT&T sat on them for months on end. T Mobile and Verizon both got their updates way before mine ever came. That's why, as a Christmas gift to myself, I jumped ship and went the custom ROM route. I understand it's not for everyone and many ROMs out there are not for daily use, but with Cyanogenmod I was getting the new versions of Android just a few weeks after they were released, and now I'm on ParanoidKANGdroid running 4.2.2.
I do hope that one day AT&T gets their act together with updates. Until then...
