Ok so i have VERIZON and i was using an old slow LG VORTEX. I weaseled my way into an early upgrade (through their customer loyalty department) and decided to get the Galaxy Nexus CPO. It was free (50$ minus 50$ mail in rebate). I dont have a lot of extra cash to get something cutting edge so i figured that for the price it was a great option. With JB (and i see paranoid android has 4.2 testing) i think i made the right choice. But the question is, how long will this phone be valid? its dual core 1.2 processor still seems pretty quick (i know its not the best) and the developer community seems to still give it plenty attention. i was coming from a single core 600mhz low end brick so im sure i will be happy with the performance.
I know you have all had your phones for a while and might be looking to upgrade soon, but im just getting one so again, did i make a good choice?
The Nexus S reached the end of it's OTA life when Nexus 4 came out, so next year whenever the new Nexus comes out is when I expect support for the Gnex from Google to end. But the development here on XDA will probably last for a while longer than that.
Look at the original Evo 4g still getting roms..since u don't have a huge budget I'd say its a solid choice
after watching this i feel i made a good choice,

I know the developers wont give up, hell i got 4.0 on my LG Vortex. so im sure this phone will remain up to date for at least 18 months.

You made an awesome choice. Don't worry.
There is no right or wrong choice, you either like it or you don't. That's all that matters

The Nexus S and Xoom have very small partitions (236mb for XOOM not sure about S) that wouldn't fit 4.2+. I'm sure with it's 1gb partition the Gnex is pretty future proof.

I am debating returning my sgs II, while I still have 15 days left to return it to wait for the Galaxy Nexus. I love the hercules, and im not returning it because of problems, I just want ICS and I feel like even though its a top rated phone, it will take forever to get ICs on it. I also think the Galaxy Nexus GSM version will be available around the same time as verizon version. Anyone have any input?

I think you will be waiting atleast a couple of months after it released on verizon before you see the GSM version. Plus there are quite a few devices either identicle or very similar to ours. So I think once one gets ics the porting will be much easier.

Yeah its a hard decision because I really like this phone....just don't wanna pass up the time I am able to return it for full price, and then regret not returning it. You really think it will be a couple months for a gsm version? Why do you say that?
return it, cancel it, and get another SGS2 from another store
then you auto extent to another 15 days
Be careful with this. Took my Tmobile gs2 back because of the screen issues and rebooting. Got a new one with minimal line issues and it seems snappier, but the guy told me it was the last exchange in the store. Me thinking I had 10 more days. Apparently since I returned an amaze and bought a BRAND NEW phone, the 14 days did not reset for me. I was always told anytime I had a new device it would reset the return period.

Well, I bought outright, so i actually get 30 days to return Its only 15 days if you buy with contract at a discounted price. And I have thought of that also...i still have til the 15th so ill give it a few more days and see if we get any news about the nexus I guess.... i dunno
Galaxy Nexus comes mid November 17 to 28 according to the fans in the GN forum.
personally i'm not excited at all about the GN, it's like a side-upgrade compared to SGS2
if you want a HD 720 device that is as best as you can get for Tmobile
otherwise SGS2 is the top of the hill at the moment spec wise
Considering how long it took for the Galaxy S2X to show up on Telus doorstep I wouldn't hold my breath for any upgrades.
It sucks as two good phones will be out but you'll have to decide of which two has the more important features and myself I love the screen on the Galaxy S2X

They did. But you will still will be waiting 3-4 months for a gsm version also keep in mind importing it might be more money then just waiting for the release. It is suppose to be released on Verizon right after black Friday. It was stated by various android sites recently. I wouldn't upgrade to it. If we get cm support or miui we will probably get ics within weeks after source drops.

im keeping mine ,the leaked speculation for the next galaxy phone are incredible...5mp camera and no sd slot ,that imo is going backward .i know the resolution is there and so is ICS but i can wait for it and if the next galaxy phone is anything close to being as planned then i would think it would be the right decision to keep the phone....unless you just got a bunch of money to blow then go for it
stick with the GalaxyS2 boss! like someone said earlier in this thread - we'll get ICS support fairly quickly with a ROM after source hits. specs are better on our phone and the lack of microsd card was a bit of a deal killer for us.
i'm getting galaxy nexus with 1280x720 resolutions! that is like putting your home desktop monitor in your pocket! haha
and 4.65 screen which the GS2 can never give me!

I'm debating doing the same. FWIW, I think the int'l GSM version of the GN will be available perhaps even before the Verizon version. If you're willing to pay full retail, it's an attractive option.

So now after a few months on the market. Is this phone still worth purchasing or is there something significantly better coming along within 3 months that will blow this out of the water. If the products that are coming out are comparable I still see this as a viable option for an upgrade from the Thunderbolt (or am I insane?).
Anyways, hope to get some feedback regarding this to assist. Thanks!
Kind of hard to answer since most new phones are announced at mobile world congress which is next month. As of this second on Verizon there is nothing better. You can argue the rezound is equal with each having pros and cons but nothing is in the pipeline yet.

This Mobile world congress convention that you mentioned. The phones that are going to be announced here will still have release dates that are months away from the actual event right? So best case those 'new' phones will be coming out ~5-6 months from now or are they actually being released to the public at this event?
If the resound is the only comparable phone, the Verizon Galaxy Nexus does indeed still sound way better (for me at least).
it depends on what your looking for, better hardware specs, pure android with great support with updates, or themed android with a lack of updates. Not saying those phones announced at CES are crappy, but if you want a phone that is guaranteed dev support/android updates then i'd recommend the Nexus. Yea they may have other phones that may beat it in hardware specs, but will those phones get the updates and the support that the nexus is and will be getting??? I seriously doubt it, not saying that they won't get support at all, but if u want the best experience of android, i'd recommend the nexus, i had the Epic 4g Touch(Galaxy S II) and i liked it, but i LOVE my nexus, it does everything i need it to, no complaints here, and the battery is great i get right at 2 days on one charge, u should get it, u won't regret it

I am on the verge of pulling the pin and just getting it. Is the amount of development activity similar to what it was with the Nexus One (my last nexus phone)? I remember crack flashing nightly with all the goodies that were available. I took a looksey in the development forum (I will be with Verizon if I get it) and saw a few good things in there.
Are any of you guys currently running a custom ROM and if so, has the custom ROM development still in its infancy or is there some decent work being put out by all the developers (donations to custom developers are a part of the cost of the phone in my book )?

If I was going to buy a phone today I would still get the Galaxy Nexus. 6 Months to a year from now will of course be a different story. If you live in the United States we always seem to wait forever for the best stuff. EU seems to be ahead of us when it comes to the latest and greatest phones.
Good Luck!

Sure, for about 9 months. Then the GN gets Jellybean, or Jello, or whatever. Meanwhile the GS3 gets a "Value Pack" which is subsequently pulled before it's even done because Samsung wants to sell the GS4 to you. Vote with your wallet, and vote for hardware which will get 2 years of support. Even if you flash, having up-to-date drivers makes it a lot easier to build custom ROM's.

Since you aren't living in the United States. MWC will announce Galaxy S3 and the U.S. will get it like 8 months later because each carrier wants something to "woo" their customers with exclusive features and all these small little variants of the Galaxy S3.
By the time that all comes out, it'll be launched with a old OS and Nexus 4 will be announced.
I stay committed to only Nexus devices simply because they will last longer. Especially with a great development community.
Sometimes, the community makes the phone.

Or maybe it is a unsatisfied owner feeling like venting/discussing the very current (and yes well covered) subject with other owners in a DISCUSSION FORUM.
Sorry but in my opinion... someone that jumps right into someone else's conversation (it is obviously not a conversation for you, you make it clear you disrespect the comment and submission) and yells "troll" is him/herself the troll.
Grandma didn't say it exactly like this but it went like this...
"if you don't have anything good to say... then STFU"
Something like that.
By the way OP... I hear ya, so do a lot of others. It pisses me off every time I see a press release mentioning some new ICS unit and here we are... still waiting. I rooted and am using a 4.0.4 that makes it "usable" but it still has crappy phone/data coverage/reception and Verizon has been promising that "patch" since early in January well before the launch day buyer's return deadline. We shouldn't have to root and take chances like that... lucky for me I'm an IT engineer and am comfortable with it but I would have been much happier with a 'bone stock" unit that works right.
There are a lot of threads on this... but then again there are always a lot of threads on everything so... whatever.
Verizon is dropping the ball big time... my only hope is that the update they come out with will be better that the leaked 4.0.4 and that is what is taking so long... and at this point in time is still not an excuse.

Unfortunately there's not much we can do for the official OTA though, for that you'll need to contact Google or Verizon.

Make the switch, you won't regret it. The specs on the Nexus are not only better (aside from camera and lack of sd slot) but development is light years ahead of the Amaze. There will of course be a new Nexus in the next 3-4 months, but it won't be $350 that's for sure. I came from an Amaze, and a T-Mo S2 and don't regret it one bit.

ugggghhh its just so irritating. they release phones with awesome specs but then you cant developed for it....
i hate it when people say "oh we'll get the latest update from cyanogen xx.xx...."
which is BULL****... considering half the time cyanogen wont ever be as refined or close to being complete on said device considering the lack of kernel source/lack of support from the manufacture... people buying non nexus devices are just being delusional. i have come to that conclusion. maybe manufacturers need to beef up the specs of their nexus device in the upcoming years
i believe the only non nexus device that i believed had a blossoming of development is the T-mobile G2\htc vision (i personally had that phone and had lots of fond moments flashing roms in)

Have to disagree with you on the "blossoming of development" part.
Have had the captivate. Which to this day. Is still going strong. And had a jellybean port before the gs3.
I had the epic touch 4g and the att gs2. Which are both still amazing phones going strong. And I am now onto the gs3 which isn't even 2 months old. (U.S release) and the number of ROMs and support for it is overwhelming.

I actually am getting a nexus on Tuesday, coming from a Droid Incredible which has working ports of - Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.
Its a device that won't die with great devs still, sense 3.5 roms were last developed by Newt/Joelz/Wildstang/Puremotive.
We had an amazing dev and community spot, its dying down as others are upgrading.

+1 on that bro, I can't wait for it to be here. And for fun's sake I even spent all night watching an Unboxing video. The only time I have ever touched the Galaxy nexus was in a Sprint store. I looked at the Gnex Screen, then back at mine. Mine looked ****ty compared to the Galaxy Nexus' Gorgeous Screen Resolution. It looked so beautiful. Messed with the UI and felt so smooth. And that was ICS. They say Jellybean is 5x Better than ICS. The moment I get the phone I'll root it and install a good JB Rom.

With black friday coming up, it's inevitably that the GS3 will be on sale. My question is, with the Nexus 4 coming out, is the GS3 still worth my upgrade? I don't know what I want to do right now, the Nexus doesn't have LTE and living in the SF Bay Area, I actually have access to LTE. But, the Nexus is quad core, and has updates as it comes out. Another question I have has to do with custom roms, specifically CM10. How stable are these releases when it comes to all the features such as camera, etc? And how's battery life? Lastly, does anyone know how the auto updater works? Is it basically like regular OTA's from any other company? Or would I have to reflash every time and update comes out?
Anyone else also stuck in the same predicament, feel free to use this thread to discuss pros and cons of each phone.
We already have a few nexus 4 or gs3 threads in here... The concensus is get the SGSIII. Cm10 is as good as the nexus variant. OTA Updater works if the dev is using it. Just Google it to see how it works.. Pretty simple.

Sorry about that, I didn't see them, but I'll be sure to search harder next time. Thanks for the information though
The s3 is my first Android device but I absolutely love this thing. There is great dev support around here so we're never behind as far as OS updates go. Personally the quad core benefits would be minimal for me in day to day use. And, the inclusion of LTE on the s3 makes it a significant plus in my book.
Sams will be selling the S3 for 99 cents on black friday with 2 year contract
Just get the S3 for now and try it. If you don't like it ENOUGH, return it before the grace period is up. No one here can tell you what you will like/dislike about the phone. That's up to you
