Hi.. Just got my replacment galaxy nexus maybe 2 weeks ago and im thinking "should i get the galaxy s 3.. It will cost me and extra 50euro if i want to bring my galaxy nexus back to the shop and swap for the gs3. So if you were in my shoes would you do it or? Please leave your comment on what you think

For only 50 eurons on top? Yeah, I'd personally go for it.
Hell of an upgrade for that money.
The only reason I would do that - for the better battery time. S3 has a bigger battery and specs are promising a long battery time.

I can only give you the same advice I would give anyone when it comes to choosing a personal device, ROM, kernel, or just about anything for that matter.
Try both, see what fits you best. If you personally like the GS3 better, go for it. If you don't, don't. Do what makes you happy and not what makes others happy.

Galaxy Nexus (GSM) = Android updates as soon as they're available. These updates include new stock Android features, security updates, kernel updates, driver updates, radio updates, etc. Essentially, updates to everything that runs the phone.
Everything else = anywhere from 2-18 months, or never.

There haven't been any major updates. The nexus will get 4.1 and 5.0 before every other phone.

I love my GNEX. But if I had a chance to swap for an S3 and pay $100 on top, I would.
Hardware is better, community will be big, and the phone is much smoother and overall a lot faster in every way that I can think of.
We Canadians will be getting the 2GB RAM version in a couple weeks. I jumping on it as soon as it comes out.
And I will be keeping the GNEX since it is a very good phone still, even by the end of the year, it will still be a very good phone.

Because there hasn't been any yet. You're using a technicality. When Google finishes the next major update, it will be first on nexus phones. Besides nexus isn't about fast updates, its about having fully open kernel and rom code. That's the point. You'll never get code for touchwiz or sense framework.

And every update for the foreseeable future. Just because there haven't been any MAJOR updates (AKA, Jelly Bean or w/e it will end up being) doesn't mean it hasn't gotten every single Android update before every non-Nexus device on the market. It hasn't gotten that update yet because that update doesn't exist yet. Even so, it will get that update at least 2-∞ months before anything else, except perhaps the Nexus S or the next Nexus device(s). Most Android phones that are coming out with 4.0 are coming out with 4.0.2 or 4.0.3; and although the updates since 4.0.1 have been small, there have been several bug fixes and new small features in every update since. Take, for example, 2.3.4 which enabled video chat on Google Voice. If you didn't (or still don't) have 2.3.4 or newer, you couldn't use it. It just didn't exist as far as your phone was concerned. 4.0.3 made several improvements to ICS in general, including but not limited to graphics improvements, new APIs, new and improved camera functions, bug fixes and accessibility improvements. Not to mention that the updates and Android itself are built with this phone as the hardware reference point and more or less designed from the ground up with this phone in mind. Android 4.0.1 was released October 19, 2011 and it still only makes up 7% of Android handsets 8 months later. If Google continues releasing major Android updates in November/December, that means there are only 5-6 months left for ICS to be current, and it's easily possible we'll see more updates until then that will never appear on other phones.
Take the T-Mobile Galaxy S II for example. That phone was released 12 October 2011, a week before 4.0.1 was released. It received an update from 2.3.5 (released July 25, 2011) to 2.3.6 (released September 2, 2011) just a week or so ago. It will be finally receiving 4.0.x (IIRC the worldwide version currently has 4.0.3, which it received March 13, 3 months after the Nexus) on June 11th according to the press releases the past few days. This is actually one of the better examples of a non-Nexus device getting an update.
This whole 'argument' is ridiculous and is either trolling or an attempt to derail the thread or both. Or not, it's hard to tell sometimes. Either way, it will always be the phone that makes you happiest that is best for you. I'm done.
for another 50 Euro, go for it GS3 is way better than GNexus

Why do you need a T-Mobile Nexus when you can get an unlocked Nexus from the play store?
I personally don't like the Nexus due to the lack of MicroSD slot, but Nexus phones are always the first to get the latest version of Android.

the nexus physically looks nicer i think lol. but why do they always get the latest versions first instead of the mass produced Galaxy series phones? i dont understand why JellyBean's first release isn't available even on the SGS3

Your pattern about three updates each phone is very convincing. However, those phones stopped in their updates due to partition space issues (and I think the n1 didn't have really enough ram for the aosp Google build).

I do remember reading that the Nexus S users would have had to do a full wipe to install 4.2 and that's why Google didn't push it to them. That said, 4.2 is heavy enough on the Galaxy Nexus that I'm not sure the Nexus S could have handled it well. Unlike the risks and unreliability that an XDA user knows might come from installing a ROM, Google has to know that the experience for it's non-technical, paying customers is acceptable.

But I agree with you that Google needs to think about the possibility of the update not performing well for the every day user. They cant put out an update just to put it out and have a bunch of people start complaining about performance issues. I honestly dont think we will have that problem with the next android version though. Unless they totally redesigned Android from the ground up and made it a powerful OS that requires the most advanced hardware. That would be dumb of Google to only support the newest hardware though.
It sure would be nice if Google would make the updates available via download but not ota. That way you always have the option to upgrade but it is not forced on people who don't want to upgrade. This way would avoid some of the customer service issues that arise if the person is aware that what they are doing would completely wipe their phone and are okay with it.

Well having the VZW Gnex, I can almost bet that I won't have it officially anytime soon. It just got the 4.2 update.
But I plan on hopping on some of the first custom roms that have it.
So like mentioned before, you're example is very convincing. But at the same time, someone mentioned that 4.2 is running well on some of the older devices. They're unofficial, but they definitely got the update.
I am 99% shure we will get it officaly. And 100% shure that we will unofficaly. But look from this side:
Nexus one:eclair,froyo,gingerbread
Nexus s:gingerbread,ics,jellybean
Galaxy nexus:ics,jellybean? 4.1.,4.1.2,4.2.1,4.2.2 every one of them is the same android version. Jellybean. So,actually we got only one update.

Please don't yell at me for this, but I sort of hope 5.0 won't be available for the Galaxy Nexus. It'd be a good reason and an excuse to ditch the Gnex and get a Nexus 4
It'd be the convincement point for me to get my dad to finally allow me to get a Nexus 4.
PS: I know convincement is not a word, but new words are conjured up all the time, so yeah..

Who promised you this? I don't have any signed agreement from Google or Samsung that this device will get 18 months of updates. Historically that has been true, and the Open Handset Alliance business rules provided for 18 months of support from the vendors. However, when has anyone heard a word from the Open Handset Alliance lately? Technology is moving fast, and random devices have lost support due to software/hardware requirements.

This, technically we only got one major update which is jellybean, we have had several iterations of JB but it is JB none the less. Plus the Gnex has enough horsepower to get an update or 2 again. Android would only be optimized further, so I think our device still has life in it, not like it's a slow single core with 256mb of ram.

True. Even 512 mb of ram would be enough. Plus we have a strong processor and a good GPU.

Yes but only according to 2011 year standards. CPU and especially GPU are actually GNexus weakest sides in comparison to 2013 (and even 2012) - handsets.
*In 2012 there were released mid end phones like HTC One S with S4 Krait onboard.
Yeah but none is too weak to not get the update.
