Why does the Epic test 'significantly faster data speeds than the Evo'? Can't see any featured that would account for that.
http://www.kevinism.com/?p=2588
Well, it has a keyboard, some people like the slightly smaller size, it has a keyboard and supports Bluetooth 3.0. If these are important to you, you're likely to think it better than the Evo.

i think you read it wrong:
"Sprint’s version of the Galaxy S sports numerous advantages over its T-Mobile “Vibrant” brethren. First, it adds support for Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network, which has already spread across numerous urban areas in the U.S. In testing with HTC EVO 4G, Sprint’s next-gen network showcased significantly higher data transfer speeds (especially useful while tethering) and the ability to simultaneously make voice calls while transmitting data (not possible using Sprint’s traditional 3G CDMA)."
I believe its saying that testing done on the Evo 4g's 4g network shows significantly higher data transfer speeds than the T-Mobile Vibrant (which the author assumes will be the case on the Epic as well).
poor word choice by the author, but thats his intent. not saying Epic's 4g is faster than Evo's.
Ah... I think your right.... my bad.
The Epic just isn't sexy enough for me. It looks so cheap and old. The EVO is beautiful.
Completely agree.
Gorgeous hardware.
Along with the Iphone its easily the best looking smartphone on earth right now.....although. Ill take the Evo...most out pundits go with the Iphone in the aesthetic dept.
Not really a review as much as breathless fanboy anticipation. For all the vaunted prowess of the Hummingbird processor, all of the Galaxy S phones routinely display lagginess not usually seen on the Evo and the battery life claims as way overstated -- most reviews of the Vibrant and Captivate peg the battery life on par with the Evo and nowhere near double.
I don't think it looks cheap. I just thinks it's too round, I like the Evo's over all shape alot better.

Same. It's definitely not an "ugly" phone exactly... But it definitely doesn't scream "high end" like the EVO, iPhone 4 or the other Galaxy S devices. The keyboard could have something to do with it as well as the roundess. Honestly, I think the best looking Galaxy S device so far is the Captivate. I love the hard edges with the curved top/bottom. It looks very elegant and original and less like an iPhone knockoff like the Vibrant and the regular Galaxy S.
Its Samsung.. like the old saying goes "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
I had a Moment. That was my one and only Samsung phone. Even if the Epic handed out BJs, I wouldnt buy one.

You remember all the hype and millions of dollars that was spent marketing it?
look how fast it took for HTC to send out a OTA for the sdcard etc..
Samsung hasn't changed a bit..have they fixed GPS yet? on any version? No!!
Is tere any kind keyboard attachment for the EVO, like if its in landscape?? I've seen some BT ones but not sure if they would work for the EVO because there's nothing that says it does. Just thought it would be cool to have.

Not trying to be a **** but wouldnt you buy an epic if you wanted a keyboard? Yes the build quality isnt there but I wouldnt think it would make much sense to carry a keyboard around.

Your completely right. It would make since, and the Epic, I think, had the best keyboard I've seen on a phone. But my buddy has this attachment on his LG dare and it gives him a full keyboard and I just thought it was cool. It would make typing out long text easier and faster. But I agree there really is no need for one, it was just something that crossed my mind and that it would be kinda cool

I'm definitely interested in one of these if anyone knows of one.
Why wouldn't just get an Epic if you want a keyboard? How about for the same reason I just traded my Epic for an Evo - the Epic, while it has a nice keyboard and a gorgeous SAMOLED display, is a buggy POS with non-working GPS, amongst a whole host of other problems. And my second Epic was better than my original. Glad to be a newly converted Evo owner.
HTC's custom Bluetooth drivers don't support HID devices like keyboards properly, and I really doubt anybody's manufactured an Evo keyboard attachment just for CM6 users.

yes the epic does have its woes like gps. but buggy it is not. you must have gotten a bad one. cause all the epics that i have played with were much more faster than my evo. the epic's i have played with were as smooth as butter.

How is problems with GPS not a "bug"? I mean, GPS is one of the most important thing a smart phone does.
"Except for not doing the most important thing it should be able to do, the phone is perfect!..."
That's like saying, "Except for the wind part, tornadoes aren't so bad..."

i agree the gps does suck on the epic. but i was really try to get the point across that buggy is one thing the epic is not. as far as the 1 thing a cell phone should do. to me that one thing is take and place calls. and i do believe the epic is a great phone at doing just that. the epic has a great speaker and mic. acutaully i think the epic speaker is just a tad bit louder and clearer than the evo. but not by much.
Apparently I got 2 buggy Epics then.
I have 2 AP's in my house (one upstairs, one down), and it refuse to pass between the two, whereas all Evos in the house do it just fine. Bluetooth connectivity was random. Sometimes, it would connect, sometimes it wouldn't. Sometimes it would connect, but audio wouldn't go through. When charging, it would reach 100% and then drop to about 95 and then back and forth, and back and forth. Non-existent GPS. Evo will lock 6-8 birds IN THE BASEMENT. Epic wouldn't lock any, even outside.
I think I'll end there, as I could go on for multiple paragraphs with the bugs. And EVERY single one was existent on both phones. I got a replacement, because the one I bought on launch day was just chewing through battery. So at least I know that was a hardware problem and not necessarily consistent amongst all Epics. The phone has a ton of potential, but they really need to fix the software. TONS of little bugs keep it from being a super-phone. SAMOLED is drop dead gorgeous, but everything about the phone feels cheap.
The frustrating part is I could've been off AT&T months earlier if I'd just bought an Evo from the start rather than waiting for the POS Epic. I'm glad that some people are loving their Epics, but I just couldn't in its current form. I gave up, and couldn't be happier with my current Evo (except maybe the crappy screen).
If i exchange my EVO this will be my fourth one. Dust, screen seperation, light leakage .

I'm also curious....As much as I love my Evo, I cannot get used to not having a physical keyboard. I have used the stock one, and also used fresh and Cyanogenmod. I have the HTC_IME special keyboard and just can't get used to it. I have noticed that the gingerbread one seems to be a lot easier to type on....I just can't seem to find on how to download it along with installing it. But people who have the Samsung Epic 4G I'm curious what everyone thinks about it.
my girlfriend also has an epic its nothing special with the dev work going on there. If you get an epic expect to have a very stock experience and the gps is rather finkey on that phone
Please do!!!!!
I came frome an epic.
Shotty build quality
Gps rarely worked right
Has the physical keyboard but would miss letters all the time.(button was hit but it wouldn't register.
Screen is nice but not big enough for me.
Always alot of wobble from the screen and the keyboard.
I kept mine for 4 months. I loved the screen but the issues it had and a lack dev support compared to the evo made me switch.
Love the evo, im used to the onscreen keyboard and I like it alot better.
Choice is yours.

ROFLMAO! I read Sultan.of.swing's response, and I was like "damn, I don't remember responding in this thread". Then I realized it wasn't me. I was in exactly the same boat. Just traded my Epic for an Evo, and couldn't be happier. GPS never worked. Keyboard just felt janky, and made the phone feel so unstable and wobbly. I LOVED the screen on the Epic, but that was about it. Every time I hit the power key, it felt like it was gonna slip out of my hand or fall apart or something. And the fact that it STILL doesn't have official Froyo is just sad. I highly doubt I'll ever buy another Samsung phone. I've had so few problems with my two HTC phones (Nexus One and Evo), that they really made the Epic feel like a toy. That's the best description I can give of the Epic. Yeah, it may have better specs overall, but it seriously feels like a damn toy.
For some reason I hate the Epic name attached to it. I know its Sprints way of putting there label on it but it sucks IMO. Before it came out and I would go to the Shack or Bestbuy to ask if they would have it they would say either what?..or yes its right here and lead me to the Epic 4G. I was so excited about the hardware and how much Samsung has changed (especially the circumstances of the development of this hardware/software versus the original) that I didn't even think about it...
...but when someone asks me what my new phone is I just flip the back to them and tell them "Galaxy s2", not like saying "Sprint's Samsung Galaxy S-II Epic Touch 4G" would mean any more to them.

Agreed. Granted this phone is actually rather epic in nature. The last Epic didn't seem so, well epic... This one is epic out of the box and we've got an exciting development community already that I'm sure will be epic, for various reasons.

Well with Verizon they had to pay Lucas to use that name, so I'd milk it for every penny too if I were Verizon. Also I understand the concept of brand recognition by keeping "Epic", but still Epic 4g Touch is a horrible name.
I either call mine Galaxy S2 (since as others have pointed out its freaking emblazened on the back), or "Enterprise D" as its a huge Galaxy-class that looks surprising thin from the side.
What the hell is wrong with people, who cares. This is the only phone that has like twenty thousand names, you can literally call it so many things and pple know what you're talking about. You can use it's absolutely full name and called it, Sprint's Samsung Epic 4g Touch, call it the Galaxy S II, call it the ET4G, call it the hottest phone in the motherfuckin world right now abbriviated to hpmfwrn. I call it GS II or ET4G. What is important tho is the only case in the world where the Exynos processor meets a 4.52 inch screen. The only instance in the world where that happens. The ET4G is pure perfection. Call it pure perfection if you want.

thickness due to slide-out keyboard.. doubt it'll get thinner.

Why are you guys getting moist over this phone? Preliminary specs show a single core 1.2ghz Hummingbird CPU, 4"qhd screen...i tuned out after those two alone.
I remember when i had the og Epic, i hardly used the keyboard that much and always wished it was thinner. Holds no candle to the Epic Touch at all whether it includes LTE or not.

I miss my keyboard though. It's funny because the phone that made me fall in love with the keyboard was the HTC Tilt/TYTN. I loved that phone even though it was thick as all hell.
If they can somehow slim the design I'd switch if the specs were on par with what I have now.
I don't understand why Samsung doesn't just make a keyboard attachment that can snap onto their existing phones.

They can. They don't because they have far too many phones to make it for. I don't even have to look to know that the iPhone definitely has one of these available that is precisely what you are looking for and probably 10 others of varying degrees of suck. How many iphones does it fit? Probably all of them, definitely the last 2.
I'm not advocating for the iPhone at all. It's simply a dynamic of having just-once-device vs a world of other devices. I guess it's a physical and/or economic manifestation of the paradox of choice...one of the few places that less choice is beneficial...at least on paper.
Me? I'm all for options, even given this dynamic.
I have to chuckle at those who miss the Epic keyboard. It was the worst phone keyboard I've ever used. It's what forced me to learn to use touchscreen keyboards and finally prefer them. I can't imagine going back now, and especially to the Epic.

Interesting, but I THINK that is a pic of the Conquer 4G. I have those exact headphones (Sony MDR-EX85) and I'll say that that handset in the pic isn't very big or thick (using the earbud as a size reference).
An updated Epic should be nice tho, I do sometimes miss the keyboard on my OG Epic. It was just too thick.
