Whats the REAL deal on metal cases? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see people say the aluminum cases will kill your reception. Magnets on the flaps of cases will mess up your gps and maps. (compass)
Even an aluminum bumper seems is a bad idea yet I see them for sale everywhere.
How much of this is FACT and how much of this is fiction?

I have the brushed aluminium back on my note 2 I had a similar back on my note I have had no problems with reception or wifi or anything like that.

But is it actually metal, or just painted plastic? Real metal WILL affect your signal.

I had a magnetic flip case and the magnet interfered with the compass and the spen digitizer. I could see the compass altering 15° when putting the phone into the case.

I'm pretty sure they are painted metal as they stops nfc from working.

Unless they have the NFC antenna in the replacement case, like official covers have, then it wouldn't matter if they were metal, plastic, or paper. No antenna = no NFC.

magnetic covers from retired el-cheapo flipcover affected compass and got me lost a few times on MAPs. as for Aluminum Bumpers, i haven't seen one for Note2, but my $60 Element case for iphone4 dropped the signal by a bar with it on. Sold it after a month's use

i ve got one too, the brush aluminium back cover with no nfc on it, so far had no problm with it, network reception, gps, gyro what so ever, except no nfs function, but after reading this thread, it catch my attention, so is there any official testing or sort of on the matter? or maybe can ask our XDA Devs here to conduct some tests to conform the troubling matter, if the metal covers do effected the reception n screw up the sensors we might have to revert back to original back cover or cases...

I discovered these a few weeks back. They look nice and have a unique look to then.
Many colors are available for both white and blue GS3s on Amazon. The above color option can be found here http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0093DKVEU/ref=mp_s_a_124?pi=SL75&qid=1348739940&sr=8-124
@winbytrick I actually just ordered one and a Kidigi charge dock. Now I need a spare batt the, dock charges a spare.Should I go OEM,what do you think?

Just received mine today.
Everyone should know that these are slightly fatter than the stock version. The advantage is that if you use your phone naked, it provides a little extra buffer for the camera lens if your rest the phone screen up. The downside is that if you use a wrap-around case, it may not fit anymore.
Luckily I knew this beforehand and decided to go with an aluminum bumper to match the new aluminum backplate

Note II's chrome bezel scratches real easy?

I've had a case on my note II ever since purchase, when I took it off, I see tint scratches around the phone. Is it just me or are others are experiencing the same thing?
Thanks for your input guys.

You'll have this with any chrome-like finish on a phone unfortunately. I've got iphones, an ipad and three android devices, all with chrome bezels and all with fine swirls and scratches...

Happened with note 1 so this time around I put best skins ever wrap around it before putting it in the case.

Yup -- it is what it is.
Mine scratches easily and has flaked off in some spots like near the head phone jack.
I didn't bother with skins I figured after the glue hardened it would pull the paint off anyways if I tried to remove it so I don't see the point.
Cases are enough for me as I can't see it anyways with one on.
Stop worrying, it will happen some way or another and enjoy your great phone!

On my previous phone (an Infuse), I had cracked chrome near the micro-USB jack. But my Note 2, after almost three months so far, with no case, has no scratches on either the glass or the chrome.
I belive it is in the design. Samsung intended it to be soft plastic in order to absorb shock. So any lil bump can nic the paint off.
I put my Skinomi on as soon as I got it. Sooo, hopefully not.
Yea mine has a few battle scars. I wish that samsung would up their build quality a bit. Coming from an HTC Inspire (Milled Aluminum Body) the cheap plasticy feel was quite a shock. But overall I love the phone and eventually got over all the plastic.

Aluminum/chrome battery cover

i just recieved this aluminum battery cover for my s3 and it looks amazing!
but..it did make my phone a tad bit thicker so my old case doesnt fit anymore
i dont mind that it made it a tad thicker it actually feels better now in the hands
is there any good cases out there that would fit for this? my idea was to buy the
aluminum battery cover then buy a bumper but now im worried that the bumper might
not fit right as well considering my phone is more thicker now
if anybody has any pictures of any cases/bumper that will fit on my phone pls post
some on this thread would gladly appreciate it
Most any full TPU case will probably fit.
Almost no slim/open style cases though. Like the Rock case style probably won't fit.
Where did you get that? I like that!

Slim Fit Mercury Case

I love this case. I got it in turquoise mint and I love it. The case is a TPU silicone (sorta) case. It fits but its flimsy enough to easily take on and off. Sadly, what I didn't know is that when shined in the light, the phone case is a bit glittery. But hell, I don't care.
This case also comes in many colors. Plus when I got the package, there was a cheap cut out Thank You card. That means a lot, considering all the stuff I buy from amazon is in bubble wrap and just a....disgusting plastic wrap.

Only thing I don't like about those cases are the cutouts for buttons. When I get a tpu case I want to be as protected as possible. I'd go crazy looking at those holes for the antenna and sd card slot. Just extra places for dirt to get in.

I do have like two extra port holes on the case that I don't understand why they're there.

The top one is the antenna and the one on the left is the sim card slot. That case made for the Korean model that our phone took design after. Just those 2 changes. Are the only difference.
Well now you ruined the mystery to him lol

Have had this case for a couple months now; best of the four TPU-type cases I've had yet. It stays on very well, doesn't lift up screen protectors (!), and protects enough such that I still have no damage after a couple drops (3-4 feet out of the pocket style). The glittery styling on the back is nice yet subtle too. Yes the cutouts are a bit odd on a US model, but all things considered it could be worse!

Brushed Metal Aluminum Case (Ebay).. thoughts?

Think this is a good buy? It's only $7.25, looks nice..

People have complained about the Incipio Aluminum cases messing with cell reception, this would likely do the same. Unless its just plastic that looks like aluminum.
Also, it seems to block the IR port.
It does look nice though :\

Hmm. I don't know. The description says:
"It is constructed of brushed aluminum metal and hard poly carbonate (PC) to ensure long lasting durability and protection."
So it seems it's made of BOTH?

Interesting.. so a bit of a cheap feel to it?
I love the look of the one I linked, but I won't get it if it will mess with reception.. thanks for the replies fellas!
Looks like it provides very little if any protection. Pass.
Its not too bad. It does not affect reception at all. I personally think it makes the phone a little big. The top sticks out a little making the power button harder to reach. It looks nice but I don't like it.
