Do I need to be rooted to use this custom rom? If not what do I need to do?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Yes you need to be rooted to install any rom or custom recovery.
OK thank you. I rooted my previous phone and when I did. I had nothing but problems it seemed like.. but that was probably 3 years ago or so..

Since you had to ask if you needed root to flash a custom ROM they were almost certainly User caused. But to each their own.
Do you still need to use a computer and all that too root your phone? And I'm running 4.1.1 is that going to screw me at all?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Scratch that definitely User error.
There are stickies right at the top of this very section on how to root.

if your bootloader is unlocked you could flash twrp using goo manager and download the supersu zip.. then flash that in twrp to root

Its hard to say, I rooted my phone successfully, then using Odin i tried to flash a rom using a guide i found now Im stuck with this.
I was hopeing to put lighting rom on or something "fast"
So after you rooted it did you boot it up and it worked? What kind of file was the rom that you were trying to flash using odin? You should install a custom recovery, I prefer twrp and it's very easy to install. And what is this lighting rom? Never heard of it
And what guide did you follow to flash a rom in odin?

You may need to try and use odin to put the stock firmware back on and root it again. I don't think you can flash zip files using odin. You use a custom recovery. Search YouTube on how to root your phone and install a recovery. If I understand you right, you rooted it and immediately tried to install a zip file using odin which you can't do.

i guess the rong one,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004650
This thread has the factory firmware with root already in it. That should work. Follow the instructions and make sure it boots up before flashing any roms. Then search on how to install a custom recovery, how to make a backup, and how to flash a new rom. There are plenty of directions or there and resources to help. And YouTube really helps.

i might have jumped the gun odin say it passed no failures. but how long dose it take for the phone to boot seems to be staling on the start of when it says Samsung
Go to the market and install root cheaker....and if you are rooted then go to the market and get goomanager, hit menue install open script recovery, , then that should install a custom recovery to your device...you can access it by turning phone off then holding volume up home then power till samsung screen shows.. then on e twrp boots hit backup, and back up to sd...onnce thats done then,,,,, u need to read some more:beer:

Hi everyone..
I've just received my upgrade and could'd wait to try out some roms. Rooting is pretty straightforward, but after many attempts I just cant get cwm to work properly..When booting with "volume up, home and power button the screen starts flickering and gets corrupted. After that I just get a black screen!
Thanks, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

MIUI recommend Cwm, twrp does not flash MIUI very well
Edit: the above post recommends Philz touch, as that is based on Cwm then it should install miui just fine.

The screen flashes an the just black, untill I hard reset the phone..

Hi,
I was in balli's thread where i realized some people had problems returning back to 4.1.2 . What i did was
1)factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache
2)Using odin I flashed back a 4.1.2 stock rom
3)factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache
Dont know if all the steps are necessary , buts this is what I did.
PS: I didn't post in Balli's thread as I'm a new user and it seems i cant.

Nope you will have to flash 4.1.2 stock rom (preferably the one you had before flashing 4.2.2 as i did it for mine, it should work on most 4.1.2 )
But yes you have to flash 4.1.2 via odin. cwm backup restore wont work if youre in 4.2.2 go back to 4.1.2 flash recovery then use restore backup.

Well, if you have the right TWRP, and are wiping /system, /data, /cache, /dalvic, I'd say bad dl , or your SD might be messed up.
That's the only reasons I can think of.

See if you can flash a stock ROM. Also, reinstall recovery. DL the one from Shelnutt2 on the codefire server. There's also a link for it in the root guide.
After reinstalling recovery, and if it'll install a stock ROM, try a 4.4 rom again. If it still fails, I'd say try wiping your SD.
Other than that, I'm at a loss.
