Arc S input power - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought an Xperia Arc S for my wife, and received it without a charger. I'm trying to figure out if I can use my Galaxy S2 charger. Does anyone know what charger voltage/current is required for the Arc S?

any microusb charger will do the job just fine, the one you own is ok.
charging current is managed by the phone, as long as the charger is capable of supply it.
in AC charging mode, phone's battery charges at about 900ma, at USB port it lowers to 450ma to not trigger the port's current limiter.

[Q] Charger for the arc

Hi all,
During my recent trip to India, my arc's charger got fried during a power surge (EP800, output = 850mA). i went looking for a replacement but I only found the CST-80, output = 700mA but this makes my arc's screen go wonky. [The screen becomes totally unresponsive; the screen jumps; it unlocks by itself; screen powers on even if I switch it off by using the power button].
I'm currently using my laptop's USB port to charge my arc but as you all know, it takes longer to charge.
With my usage, the battery is exhausted by night. (I don't get the fantastic battery life that many claim).
My question is whether I can use chargers from different companies (with different outputs)? For example, the Nokia charger has an output of 1000mA; the Blackberry charger has an output of 1200mA. Even USB adapters (eg: Capdase) have an output higher than 850mA of the GreenHeart charger I received with my phone (EP800).
I would like to know if there's any harm in using one of these chargers? Can it harm my battery and in turn, my phone?
I hate to bump up the thread but I would really like some feedback on using Nokia & Blackberry chargers on the arc.
Can it harm my battery or phone in any way?
Just asking as I'm pretty sure that most of you would have at least one of the chargers.

I've used wall chargers from a variety of companies with varied outputs from 500mAh to 1,000mAh as well as the "Super Charger" USB ports on both Asus and MSI motherboards that have double the standard USB wattage (1,000mAh) without issue. Sony's own car charger, the AN-300, which I use daily is 700mAh.
The charging circuits in the phone should automatically regulate and stop it from charging when it's full. Charging shouldn't affect the phone's operating unless you're using an overvolt kernel or other CPU modification such as SetCPU.

I've used a LG Pop charger (700mA) for 20 hours in total at least, and my phone was perfectly normal charging, only the charger made some annoying noise (not very loud and not continious), but both weren't damaged in any way.
I think that lower Amps won't do any harm, for higher Amps I don't dare to make a guess.
I use a htc wall charger for my neo and my arc, it is 1000 mah, no problems up to now, the only thing mAh does it influences the charging time

I was mainly worried about leaving it to charge over-night (as that's what I normally tend to do).
i lose my charger too, and with other charger my screen get funny, the tactil gestures work wrong, theres is a problem with my arc?

Wall Adapter [Q]

Could you guys recommend me a wall adapter?
I heard that i should get a 1500 mA one, but the best i found on amazon is Belkin Universal USB Wall Charger EU which is a 1000 mA ( i'm not allowed to post links yet, but if you search it it's impossible not to find it). I have to tell you that i can only buy it from the UK and that it needs to be a standard EU plug.
The one amazon.de sent me charges fine, the only issue is that it turns on my device if i try to charge it when it's off. The charger is a 5v 1A.
My iPhone 5S wall charger is also a 5v 1A but it "behaves better" i guess, because when my moto G is off wheni plug it to the iPhone 5S wall charger it doesn't turn on my phone automaticaly, it charges fine and the moto g only shows the battery image on screen.
Both charge ok (1A 5v), but if i want to charge my phone when it's off i guess some chargers won't be able to do that. Maybe it's an voltage accuracy.

Any wallcharger will do as long it is 500-1500mA but i think anything over 1500mA can be used, but the device will limit it to 1500mA.
But i wouldn't recommend anything over 1500mA as it could damage the device.
The higher the mA is the faster it will charge.
Currently im using the Sony Ericsson Live Dock DK10 to charge my Moto G but im looking for a more powerful charger.

Additional amperage does not harm the device, only incorrect voltage will. The phone will only draw as much amperage as the charging chip allows.
Having said that, keep in mind that quick charging will wear out the battery faster than a slower charge.
I'm using a 750mA, 5V Blackberry charger for mine - from empty it takes about 2hrs 45mins to fully charge, so a higher amperage should be pretty fast. Doesn't boot the phone if the phone is off.

In case anyone is wondering whether the old Apple wall charger is working or not (the one from circa 2007. I broke my other decent wall adapter...), it's working almost perfectly. It's correctly recognized as wall charger and ~1A is drawn from. That's quite surprising, It had always been wrongly detected by all the phones I tried to charge with it. The only drawback is that the device can't be charged when off, the device will simply boot as soon as it's plugged. This doesn't happen with proper wall chargers (at least on JB, I don't know if something changed with KK).
To know if a wall charger is detected as such, dial *#*#4636#*#* and see if it says "USB" instead of "CA" in the battery informations. Usually USB means lower current (~500mA) and kernel wakelocks (not always this one, it depends on how the charger is detected). That's not good.
You can also get the amount of current flowing though the battery using CurrentWidget (look for it on the Play Store) or reading the files in /sys/class/power_supply/battery/.

The Asian dual sim version comes with a charger with a hard wired cable, rather than a micro USB cable (and interestingly, its only got 2 wires connected from what I can tell). Its 500mA, and mine uses a UK plug. I've also tried it with a HTC charger (the moto charger has a VERY long, unwieldy cable) thats also 500mA and it works too. There's no real need for a higher amperage, and it does tend to charge pretty fast.

[Q] Mains 5V 2A wall charger

I have a Samsung 5V 2A mains wall charger with USB/MicroUSB cable.
I'm using it to charge my XPERIA M (C1905) ... tentatively
Would there be a problem pushing 2A(spec'd on charger) into the XPERIA M?
I have no idea what the maximum acceptable Amperage under charge for an XPERIA M is.
If I use CurrentWidget as a basic indicator it notes up to 1.3A while charging the battery using the 2A charger.
As a test, I used a 850mAh Sony charger and CurrentWidget noted 700mAh when charging the battery.
So I'm guessing CurrentWidget on an XPERIA M gives ball park figures.
I'm hoping the XPERIA M has a maximum 'safe' Amp limit and wondering if I'm pushing my luck using a 2A charger.
Any thoughts on this?

As far as I know, there aren't any side effects... More amp means that the battery will be charged fast, so, as long as your phone doesn't get hot, I think it's safe...

I've done a bit of reading and the general conclusion is as you have said and if it's getting hot, there may be problems.
Over-volting or excessive voltage is the big no no and Amps is just what the phone accepts.
The XPERIA M indicates a max Amp draw of approx 1.1A
When not really required I'll probably just stick to a 450mAh USB charging port on a Panasonic KX-TG7873S land phone which is normally used for a slow charge.
It does appear at this time that slower charging does prolong battery life overall, but using a 5V 2A charger every now and then will not really impact anything.

Xperia Z1 wireless charging?

I have a Xperia Z1 and I was wondering if it is equipped with any functions that enables wireless charging (QI-enabled something)?
Tried googling but found no results other than some news on Xperia Z..
On the other hand, if Xperia Z1 does have it, is it possible to buy any wireless charging pad from ebay and charge it?
Don't know about it,too, but I dug into that tech a while ago in orderto know about pros and cons.
I have to admit, it's a convenient technology to just lay your mobile onto that charger and get it charged.
But there are two big disadvantages from my point of view:
Low efficiency - the induction tech used has a small efficiency, so there's a big loss of energy
Low charging power - the charging rate that is possible with the current tech is rather low, it takes AGES to have your phone fully charged, and I even read about people not getting any extra fuel because they used the phone during charge.
Personally speaking I like the magnetic charger plug for our phone a lot more, because it has hardly any loss and just takes a second to attach it, needing no closing of flaps upon removing.

I have a n4 as well. Charge time is marginally longer/slower. The info you have read is incorrect based upon my and other users that have used wireless charging.

Thanks guys. I do own the magnetic cable (dismantle it for the cable), however it is a nuisance that the magnetic cable only works with the charger adaptor and not with the PC..
Been trying to find alternative ways to get my phone charged other than opening the flaps and I thought wireless charging may be a better idea

I use my magnetic cable to charge the phone via laptop and it works..not sure why not for u

Nope. Mine is stock. infact magnetic charger seems to charger at a faster rate for me from Laptop
I have 2 of the magnetic cables: one is original from the sony DK-31 dock and the other from japan. Although the both look identical to one another, they function differently.
The original one doesn't charge from a laptop and has to be used with an adapter
The generic one charges from a laptop and can be used with an adapter, however in a laptop it charges significantly slower. Has to charge all night and it still won't be a complete full charge in the morning - it will be close to full.
1.) The Z1 does not have any sort of wireless charging built in.
2.) The Z1 will charge via PC USB connection, however the output of the USB cable varies based on the standard.
** USB 2.0 can charge at a rate of up to 750mAh with concurrent data transmission. Without data, the charge rate maxes out at 5A at 5V.
** USB 3.0 can charge at a rate of up to 900mAh with concurrent data transmission. Without data, the charge rate maxes out at 5A at 5V.
** USB 3.1 can charge at a rate of up to 900mAh with concurrent data transmission. Without data, the charge rate maxes out at 2A at 5V and up to 5A at 12V or 20V.
3.) Qi wireless chargers are slower than wall chargers as well. A typical Qi wireless charger transmits power at a rate of 750mAh at 5V.
To put this all in perspective, the standard wall charger that comes with the Z1 charges over USB 2.0 at a rate of 1.5Ah at 5V.
A PC USB connection will typically be 50% slower at charging than the stock wall charger for the Z1.
Thanks all for the reply. Yup, my cable is inded the one from the Sony Charging Dock and hence it does not seems to be working with the computers unless it is paired with the adaptors.
At least now I know that Xperia Z1 does not comes with wireless modules.. Keep hoping that it may have.

Mine doesnt do it either.
I removed the cable from the original sony dock.
3rd party adapters work plugged in to the computer..
weird!

Dual port 2amp Charger - What should I buy

I am aware that many of these dual USB port chargers dont actually charge any faster than 1amp.
Does anyone know of a robust dual charger that can swiftly charge my Z1, without having to turn everything on the phone off?
Also, will charging via the magnetic charging port and the mini usb at the same time, cause any issues or charge the phone faster?
If i am being stupid, please forgive me.
Take a look at the Anker chargers.
As far as I am aware you cannot charge your phone by simultaneously using the magnetic port and the usb port. Most likely the first one to be plugged in will take priority. Q

Thanks, I bought an Anker 150000 amp. It's dual. I was looking for an adaptor for a wall socket. Just worded my request wrongly it seems.
I have a Sony mag-cable, and a sony wall charger.. all are stock sony supplies bought directly from the local Sony retail store.
When I plug my mag-cable to the side, it charges it - as expected.
When I then plug the USB cable in, which is connected to the wall charger on the end, the mag cable STOPS working.
Using a voltmeter connected to the prongs on the side of the phone, the voltages dropped to near 0 as soon as the usb was plugged in.
I'm using a NUT's 4.4.4 with a locked BL and stock kernel/everything else.

I don't think you can charge them at the same time. I don't know much about them, but you might also look into 4 or 6 port chargers too.
I use the magnetic charger, it charge quite fast as. But I think the voltage limit for magnetic is 1 ma.
But for usb, I charge with Sony fast charge USB power bank, it's charging rate at 2.1 ma.
It's very speedy to charge. So I suppose that having a charger with 2.1 ma charger will fill up your battery better than 1 ma.
Anker chargers are really awesome, been using them for months...
