Anyone else having an issue where read messages don't stay marked as read? I've been having to re mark emails as read daily.

Yes. Even my note 1 was terrible with this. I'd delete messages even and they pop back up multiple times randomly. It's been pretty agitating, and I've gotten to the point where I just stopped the notifications.

Did you try using a 3rd party email app to see if it made a difference?
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note II (SGH-I317) on the infamous AT&T Network.
Yes, no change. This is yahoo, road runner, gmail, and the att.net via yahoo that all do it repeatedly on any device except via web browser. Tried an ipad, iphone, note 10.1, the first note phone, and both of the note 2's I have had. The apple devices don't copy the alerts for only the roadrunner account, otherwise all 4 accounts repeated the same problem.
Have you found any solution? I am not sure why all those different gmail and yahoo accounts would act so strangely but it is typical for me. Haha

Nope, unfortunately no solution as of yet but it's annoying as he'll, and I know that much!

This probably won't help, but I'll put it out there anyway. I've noticed that when I go into any web based email client (Comcast, for instance) the mail on my phone from that account...refreshes, is the best way I can put it. Mail I've already deleted from my phone pops up again as new and I have to go through and delete it again. That has happened on pretty much every phone I've used. Never really looked into it too deeply, but it is annoying.

Definitely true! I never had an issue with any devices for years now until my note 1 hit ICS official. I am not sure how it coincides but that is the only thing I know of that changed. Strange stuff. I have the same trouble, especially clear from device to device.
I may just try a 3rd party app to see if that helps. Maybe K9 Mail or similar. Will report back.

Just a few thoughts of what I've seen in the past. You may already know all this but FWIW, whatever.
1. pop3 email accounts are crap. Usually when you delete, it still stays on the server until you delete in webmail or something with true access to email.
2. Setting up email accounts with imap will delete off the server. It's not perfect like Exchange but better than pop.
3. I've often used the settings in gmail to push or pull email from my other none gmail accounts. For example my home internet company will only send usage alerts to the email account they provide. They also don't allow access to see the email unless you are on their network (at home) or go to their site and check their webmail app. So I use gmail pull tool to automatically check for new emails every so often (Gmail decides the frequency) and pull the new mail into my gmail account, then they show up on my phone. One time I accidently created a loop of three email addresses, one pushing and one pulling email so 1 email continually delivered over and over until I realized what I had done. "Broadcast storm anyone??" You may want to check how many devices are getting access to that email address, it could be something like #4.
4. I've seen a problem where my home desktop PC has Outlook installed. When outlook is open I think it would receive the email before my phone and save it to the PST, so my phone would never see it. Except there was a setting in outlook to "Leave emails on the server for X amount of time. Which was great because then my phone would see them even though outlook pulled them into the PST file. However I also noticed when I deleted the email from my phone it would reappear and I think it was because I had outlook leave it on the server. If my PC was shut off I had no problems. Another way I could clear it was to go to a webmail site and login to my email and delete them off the server. Then they would still be in my PST from the first time they arrived and I could also delete them off my phone only this time they would not reappear because I had gone into the server and deleted them. I bet this is as clear as mud right. Meh
One of these above may be a factor.
I am using apex launcher and the symptoms have minimized or fixed.... but this is an android issue... android doesn't do push like the iPhone...
on the iPhone...you delete an email and a couple of secs later.. it is gone from the web... and vice versa...
on android you have to wait till it syncs... it doesn't do push...
these are the things that make me want to go back to iPhone... i wish we could install iOS on this big phone!

Yahoo mail app does push for certain, and so does hotmail, even to the native email app. I just cant seem to get the yahoo mail app to zoom ever, and it makes reading messages impossible. I get the same repeated emails in ios also, so it isn't free of similar issues for me at least.

I had a bit of a debacle with the DI18 Gmail app yesterday. I received a really important email and replied to it promptly through the Gmail app, hit send and then took a nap. Two hours later, I wake up and see that my reply was STILL SENDING.
Even worse, I checked my Gmail on a computer and it said the email I replied to WASN'T EVEN READ.
So I flashed the ACS-modified DK28 and it seems to be working better, but now it seems the most important calls I make are MUTED on the other end, and they still connect.
So I'm left with a dilemma: is there a good working email app (Gmail or non-Gmail) out there that just WORKS??? (I've tried K-9 Mail but I didn't really like it) Or should I stay with the working DK28 version and have randomly muted calls?

Honestly there are not many alternatives. You already tried K9. I am not having any issues with calls or gmail. Not sure what is going wrong on your end. Did you wipe everything before flashing?

I remember I always had a problem with sync in stock DI18 for some reason, like when I first got the phone. (Actually, on stock DI18, there wasn't even an option to sync my Google Calendar on an account that had one.) That's why I started working with roms and rooting and etc.

No, I'm just using Google accounts. Sometimes they work, sometimes not.
MailDroid is a good option.
I was having the same issue. Make sure auto-sync is checked in Setting->Accounts and Sync. If that doesn't in the Gmail app you can go to your outbox and manually force the email to be sent.
I like the galaxy tab one

Yes, Maildroid is good but it has an ads.
SEVEN is a push type email app that I've been using since my 755p days, back when it was packaged with my Treo, it was called Sprint Email...but it was created by SEVEN. It's not downloadable from the Market, you have to goto SEVEN's website, click on their beta program and then jump through random hoops until you can download it. I had it on my Moment and now me Epic and I love it. I run 6 different email accounts, from Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, and AOHell and they all work perfectly, show images (from Harbor Freight ads for example) and even shows unique icons on the taskbar for each email account. Just make sure to set it up correctly, otherwise it'll do things like not check email during certain hours or on the weekends (a feature I'd never use) or below certain battery percentages. No ads and a great app, and it even comes w/ a beta IM app.
I keep getting these weird texts from 6250 saying VZWNMN 1 and VZWNMN 2. Anyone else see this?
Me to. Comes prior to every email. VZW said they never heard of it.

I used to receive these, but I figured out how to stop them!
1. Login to your MyVerizon.
2. Find your number and click on Change Features from the bottom right.
3. Select your device/number.
4. Then scroll down until you find Contact Management and click remove!
And they're gone.
EDIT: Don't want to take credit for this, I got this from Droid Life, but I re-wrote it.
Thank you kind sir! This helped!

I've synced/added gmail and yahoo mail accounts at setup and found that only the yahoo account was affected. Now I just use yahoo mail through their app and the functionality is much better/no VZWNMN emails.
This problem seemed to change from ROM to ROM(some were affected, some not).

I had this problem when I went from a Sense rom back to CM7. I think it happens because on the Sense rom, during setup, it syncs your contacts and email to Verizon. When I flashed a different rom, it could no longer sync.
This has to be one of the most annoying things Verizon has done. I don't mind it syncing. It is actually kind of cool. I don't know how many times I have deleted a very important email and had no backup.
But texting me everytime I get an email is annoying and a pain.
For awhile, I was avoiding ROMs(like MIUI for me) that seemed to have this VZWNMN problem more than others I was using.
I've found that using a market email app(for me, Yahoo!) is better than trying to use the installed android email app for non-Google email. Functionality(like folders) is much better, too.
If you use Titanium to back-up apps, you don't need to re-sign into your email app when you change ROM's, just restore and away you go...
I might be the only one having this issue, but the default email app for Exchange doesn't keep the words together when it goes to the next line.
Here is an excerpt from an email:
"In todays fast paced business environm
ent, we all have to wear multiple hats to
remain competitive in this challenging ec
onomy."
See how the words just continue on the next line?
I can't find a setting to fix this.
And if I can't get this fixed, is there any other *good* apps other than touchdown to connect through activesync?
Mine doesnt seem to have this problem. I not sure what would be causing it for you.

I have the same issue with default Email app. I also see the full headers which make reading email really difficult. The actual email text is hard find with all the header and other text.
I use Exchange Active Sync adapter to connect to Lotus Notes email. Never had problems with other Android stock emaill apps.
I tried other Exchange email apps and have settled down with Moxier Mail.
Edit: I tried resetting the account on stock email app but it didn't help.
Hope this helps.

Resetting the accounts didn't help mine either. I can't wait until this thing is rooted...
Found the *kinda* fix. If you set the phone to download the entire message instead of just 2k or 100k or whatever, then it fixes the behavior. It's only when you download a partial message that words are broken onto the next line.
Posting this in general, as I'm not asking a question. I'm stating my findings. Though, feel free to chime in with your experiences.
I'm quite frustrated with mail on my One X. It drives me so insane, I want to go back to my Gnex or iPhone because mail works flawlessly on those. I have read others claiming they don't have this issue, but that's bull. I have had the AT&T version and now the International version and this problem is very real.
I have two accounts set up as Exchange accounts: One is my work e-mail, the other is Gmail. I also have Gmail set up through the native app.
Mail will work fine for a while, then just stops coming in. Today, it was my work e-mail account. I went into Accounts and Sync and there was a "!" on Calendar. It seems like when it can't sync one component of the account, nothing else comes in. I could be wrong. Most certainly, mail stops coming into the Mail app from time-to-time. It's like it just goes to sleep.
It will then inexplicably start working for a while, then stop again. It drives me batty. The moral of the story is, I can't rely on my phone for e-mail at this point, which is kind of a fundamental function of a smartphone. It's even more frustrating when I see the mail come in on every other device and my One X just doesn't get it. If I open Mail, it comes in and sometimes it will work normally for a while after that, but then it stops again.
Really hoping HTC fixes this soon, because it's a serious issue. The only thing I haven't tried is using a 3rd party client, but I don't want to do that because then the mail conversations won't be threaded in my contact history. And honestly, I shouldn't have to.
Also, disclaimer, I am NOT set to Smart Sync on any of my accounts. They are all push.
I can confirm that I am having the same experience and its really pi##ing me off!
Occasionally I get a message stuck in the Outbox as well and then it just keeps on resending the mail. 27 times once!
It also really sucks the battery when it plays up like this.
Always seems to happen after low or no connectivity.

It happens to me with WiFi here at home. It's not just Mail but also other apps that need to sync like Weather. It's not because of the apps but because even though it shows my WiFi is connected, it is actually disconnected.
I went to another house with WiFi the other day. Perhaps they have different settings... Either way it never happened there. NEVER. I received e-mails right away on my Mail Exchange... Right away. My Weather never missed the update schedule.
Btw, have you enabled the security thing with Mail For Exchange? Something to do with the server. I have only enabled it yesterday.

Is it because of sync setting?
I have 2 work email account, one set as push and another set to auto sync every 4 hours, both works fine no matter i'm on 3G or wifi. Besides, my Gmail using the native gmail app also works fine. The moment i saw a notification on my desktop then immediately the phone will notify me.
This is a very real issue for me, i was just about to make a thread on it myself. I have 2 email accounts, a hotmail and a gmail, neither refuse to sync. I Cant see new or old messages, sent, deleted etc on either account. It did work at one point but then it stopped again for no apparent reason.
100% battery
doesnt work on network or wifi
everything else syncs fine, inc dropbox and weather.
using default mail client.

Er... Is it because it is set to sync only when you open the app?

There is definatly an issue on HTC's side.
My exchange mail isnt working well as well. Set it to push...the first few minutes/hours AFTER I turned off the screen pushing works more or less good.
Test mails arrives a few seconds/sometimes minutes after I sent them to my own mail account...but when the phone is idling for some more hours it wont sync the mails anymore...it starts syncing the mails again when I turn on the screen.
Really annoying imo. On gingerbread push mail was working fine..mails arrived seconds after you sent them to the maila ccount that syncs the mails on the device.
I think the issue is smartsync in the settings.apk.
It tries to handle the data connection of the device to give better battery life..but therefore breaks for example proper mail syncing.
On gingerbread you was able to deactivate that feature, it was called "constant mobile data" or similar..if you unckecked it, your mobile data went to sleep after a while when your turned off the screen....on ICS you cant control it yet...Hope htc will fix it for the next OTA.

Well if thats the issue then its poorly designed. I'm seriously considering exchanging for the S3.
Regardless of when it is set to sync, it should sync when i want it to. So if i have manual sync, then when i refresh it i should be able to see new email, correct?

Yeah, that's what it seemed like to me: That HTC was defaulting to smartsync, even when it was set to Push, because it'll start working fine for a while, then stop again. This is really my only issue with the phone currently and it's also one of the most critical. It needs to be addressed sooner, rather than later.
This has been happening to me too. It is not new though. It happened on my HTC Sensation. E-mail would gets stuck in the outbox and tells me it has failed when in fact it is sending it over and over and people end up with multiple e-mails from me. It is extremely frustrating. I also get the exclamation mark when trying a manual sync. It ONLY happens over WiFi and it is not all the time. It happens on different WiFi connections, not just mine and it can sometimes be fine for days. The annoying thing is, I do not know I am unable to receive e-mail until I try sending one and it fails. As soon as it fails I know the problem is back and I have to switch WiFi off.
Glad I am not the only one with this issue. I may end up trying a third party mail app if it isn't fixed.
Yes, this is very annoying.
Happened to me once too, and I had to remove my account and re-create it.
Fixed it - but that's just really a work around for a problem that shouldn't exist...

This doesn't work for me. I wish it was that easy.
Hi All,
So NK3 was forced upon me and immediately after the update our corporate exchange active sync email stopped pushing. We use the app called 9 Folders Email. No settings have been changed on our side, we have uninstalled and reinstalled 9 Folders Email. The only way we get our email now is by manually going into the app and refreshing it.
Any ideas?
Thank you
I've got three activesync accounts on my phone and they all work fine. A bit slow to load compared to my old S4. But I get push email for sure.
I also have 3 exchange accounts at the moment and don't have a problem with any of them retrieving mail with "push" option.
However on NK3 75% (not exaggerating) of my battery would get eaten daily just from exchange.. I had other major problems than syncing (almost seemed as if it would never drop the connection after it was done and wouldn't let my phone sleep).
I have since downgraded back to NIE and no longer have any exchange issues, and I am pleased to report that with the same 3 exchange acts on the phone.. exchange service uses like 8-12% battery..
I know not everyone experiences the same results but honestly I think NK3 has big problems.. and exchange is one of them.. at least it was for me.

How many sub folders in your mailbox do you have set to sync? The more you set to sync the greater amount of battery it tends to eat.
I typically set a couple of key folders to sync so those are up to date at all times, the rest update when I open them. Seems to make mine more manageable in terms of battery.
But odd that push seems to stop for some on NK3.

That is interesting, I never thought of that.
my home acct has like 4 folders syncing, my work account has 22 folders syncing, my other exchange has 1 folder syncing, all those in addition to the inbox/trash/sent/etc default folders
I wish I had tried not syncing the folders before I went back to stock, but FWIW I have all 3 accounts on NIE firmware, with all those folders syncing and 1/10th the battery life being used in comparison with NK3 firmware.
but thanks for the advice, I will definitely remember that for the future.
Our IT department had to change our server URL to get push working again. All is fine but as I posted on another cell forum....These are the last devices we will buy from AT&T. We will keep our corporate account with them for now but the remainder of our devices will either be T-Mobile phones OR phones from Global Phones in Miami....NO more locked boot loaders and updates we cannot control..
