Hi all.
I have some questions regarding the new camera app in 4.2.
Why is there a difference between the camera I open from the lock screen widget and the actual camera out of the menu? For example when I take a picture with the widget camera, swipe to the left so have a look at the picture, I can only "delete" it. There are not the regular options like "share" or anything. I first have to go back, unlock, open gallery, find picture and then "share". Why is this??
Also, when I take a picture and afterwards have a look at it in the gallery, it actually captured more of the thing I wanted to take a picture of (I think about 10% at top, bottom, left, right). Has anybody else this issue?
And of course, the very frustrating lag when turning the device from landscape into portrait or vice versa, but like I read in other topics this is everybody's issue.
Thanks all!

That is for security reasons. Otherwise anybody who gets a hold of your phone could share your pictures anywhere he wants. If you disable your unlocking option (or set it to "move finger") you'll get the full menu including the icons for sharing.

This was most likely the reason.
But, correct me if I'm wrong, the camera can only be accessed via the 'Slide' screen lock, which isn't secure at all.

Yeah you're wrong. There is a huge camera icon sitting on the first page of the menu. I don't think anyone will miss that.
Why have the real time face effects in video recording been removed?

The camera actually take more than what we view on screen. That's annoying when I take a close up picture, it become farther view than what we seen on screen

you can also acces the camera using a lock pin. i didn't try with other security means (pattern, faceunlck, etc..) but i guess it's the same thing. personally, i like this feature a lot.

Just wondering for those of you who have the device already, have you guys found some neat features/tricks using 4.0 that haven't been documented or heavily advertised?
I would love to make a list of these features for other users to explore...
Lets get this started
List:
Reserved........
I know it's documented, but it was still a surprise to me - you can now finally delete apps straight from the app drawer, by dragging them just as if you were going to place them on the desktop, but then putting them in the recycle bin on the top.
No affiliation with apple. Or siri.

Nobody's talking about the search app. It's way better than the one in Gingerbread. Much easier to find stuff in your phone : music, app, sms, docs, etc. The old one was returning web search suggestion in 90% of the result... useless.
Search in browser let's you edit suggestion if you want to add something to it. But we lost popular web site suggestion
Just read it on Pocketnow but you can make folders in the favourites bar. Apologies if obvious.
When in the stock browser and you change orientation, tap the screen to make it rotate.

which runs TouchWiz, so it's not stock Android
Rotate the phone to the right whilst in any stock app (so the speaker grill and front camera are on the right). Notice that the back, home and task switch buttons have moved to the top of the screen so that they stay on the right.
When using an ics app hold down on an icon in the action bar to get a description of what it does

Not heavily advertised, but it should be:
The quick control in the browser. Almost the same as on honeycomb. Activate it in the labs settings of the browser. Love it!

NICE find! Thanks!
This is known about, however you said undocumented and I haven't a single document for the Nexus/ICS apart from on one which came with the phone, telling me how to fix the battery.
Hold the volume down and power key, and you take a screen capture. Which is very handy on occasions

If you tap the volume button which makes the volume bar appear, you can then press the icon to the left of the volume bar and it toggles between ring and vibrate.

In settings/about phone. Tap repeatedly on the android version number (4.0...) then a little android appears. Keep ur finger on it and it grows into a screen animation.
If u didn't know about this,I guess u r now thinking this is a joke. Or is it?
Need someone to test; try swiping the web pages up/down using 2 fingers
, is it a feature or a glitch?

I thought it scrolled page by page. try by flicking with 2 fingers.
I just noticed that when using the camera, a swipe to the left brings the last taken photo.
I'm on a 4.1.2 rom
Usually I pay attention to new android features, but I didn't remember reading about this one, so I thought I would share...
This was even announced along with 4.1 at Google I/O this summer
Unfortunately in 4.2 your can do the same thing on the permanent lock screen widget, exposing your gallery to everyone who might come across your phone.

no, not with a secure lock screen. it shows a padlock then asks you to enter your password

Yep, just tested it. Really stupid.
Though, on the flip side, I tried something I didn't realize before - tried to access the phones internal storage via USB and it wouldn't show anything until I unlocked it once after it was connected.

Oh, you're right. I could have sworn that it didn't need unlocking, but it seems you're right.
You can use this app too. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34093005 It works well.

OMG the swipe saved a potential high jacker of my photo Two clicks... I don't get why everyone is up in arms about the lock screen camera. When using a secure lock it will only show photos taken during that session or nothing at all. If your unsecure then it takes two swipes to do what two what taps will do on every single other phone running iOS 4+ or Android 4.0+. Seriously swipe to the camera icon or tap it on a iOS device and then tap gallery... Voila all the gallery is there....
Seriously I don't really get all the hatorade being thrown towards Google over swipe to camera... Its fantastic IMO, abit slow though
Yup, this was there since 4.1.

I'm not sure we talk about the same thing; at some point the discussion shifted to lockscreen, but what I originally meant was: when you use the camera app (when you can see on your screen what is seen by the camera) then you can swipe to the left to bring the gallery; I know you can also click on the thumbnail preview at the bottom, but swiping is easier when you use the phone single hand
While in the gallery view you can fling up or down to delete pics.
Hello, very often when I see interesting things, I take out my phone, enter the four digit passcodes, then go to different screens to find the camera icon. Then, I finally found and waited long enough for the camera app to be active, interesting things have already been passed. What is the fastest way to launch the Camera app? Thanks.

i use an app called home2shortcut, which allows you to set the home button and the soft key presses and combination of presses to whatever you want. I have the home button set that one click brings me home, 2 clicks opens a voice dialer. home and then menu opens a app called rotation locker which brings up a small window and i can choose portrait or landscape and finally home and then back brings up camera. so no matter where i am i can always bring up camera quick. In addition do what the other guy said above and add the camera app to the lockscreen so you can slide up from it and it will open camera.

burst
hold down the capture button for burst mode
Remove your lock; with swype lockscreen there is an option to where if you hold the lockscreen and then turn your phone to landscape it automatically unlocks the phone and opens the camera

I love you. More than you shall ever know.
my bad, misunderstood, there is also a camera shortcut on the N2 lockscreen that launches straight into the camera. and many other app lockscreens that provide similar functions; widgetlocker, active s lock screen.
On Android 4.2, you can set the camera as a lock screen widget. Wake up the screen with the power or home key, and swipe to the camera. Takes less than 5 seconds from pressing a button to taking a photo. Any photos previously taken are cannot be viewed unless the pin/password is entered, so security is maintained, even with a camera widget.
Any ROM running 4.2 will work, or you can wait a little longer until the official 4.2 build from Samsung comes out. Should be soon.
There is some app called 'quick camera' it's quite fast but it all really depends on your phone rom version and the software and hardware of your phone

Hi all, I want to disable that annoying music and slide show that starts every time I open an album in the Gallery app. I can't for the life of me see where to disable that; any ideas?

You can disable the one in the main part of the gallery, hit the 3 dots on the top left and you can show/hide which images/folders you want.

Hi, thanks, but that's not where I am talking about. If you hit the Gallery icon on the desktop, then tap the "All Photos" row, at the top of the All Photos screen there is a preview movie that scrolls through all your images with music that auto plays after about 3 seconds.

Yea don't think there's as way to remove that one. Don't really see the point of it either, I mute the music to at least stop that part. The only other solution I can think of is to use another gallery app like quick pic.
I think it's really obnoxious and useless and it got me in trouble when it blasted that awful music in a really quiet environment when I was trying to show someone some pics. It's such a bad feature in fact that I am considering selling the phone for one that gives its user more control over system functions like that.
Thanks for your help though, appreciate it.
Just use Quick Pic. Very close to stock aosp gallery.
Selling the phone over an app seems fairly extreme. ?

Also, Root the phone and you'll be in control of everything. ?
That's how much it annoys me
I don't use it. I use Quick Pic. But yeah, I don't like the stock gallery either.
Just deselect the content

Same like me quick pic the best better than stock gallery
With Android 6, there is now a way, at last:
Settings -> Apps -> Zoe Video Editor -> Disable.
Reload your gallery.
Goodbye crapware!

Yes. While the camera app is open and the front camera is selected, tap the 'settings' icon (the geared wheel) and you'll see an icon that looks like two heads in profile. They will be both facing the same direction by default. Tap them so they are facing away from each other. Now, while the image will still appear on the screen mirrored, the resulting picture will appear normal.

It is just a preference. Things normally have to be flipped when you use a FFC for selfies and video.
