Ok, i had a G1 & i never rooted it, now i have the the Desire & havent bothered rooting it as i think Android seems to be cool from stock.
But theres a few apps i want to use that require root access to use, so my 3 questions are.
1, if i root my Desire do i have to install a different rom? As i like the way the stock Android runs
2, is there a sort of "1 click root" like the iphone jailbreak, as ive seen apps like "easy root" that claim it instantly roots your phone, bit then on here people talk about gold cards ect...
3, if i do root the Desire, will i still get the network pushed OTA updates? As im on vodafone & they havent pushed 2.2 out yet so i want to get it from them, also if i will get them, when i update will it un-root my phone like iphones updatespatch jailbreaks.
Thanks in advance for replys, as i said im not interested in usijg custom/different roms, i only want to use apps that require root access, like cache cleaners ect... but i still want the stock android + sence with my OTA updates.
Thanks

1. there are rooted version of the stock ROM available, check the Dev forum
2. Follow this - http://rootmydroid.co.uk/guides/desire/howto-root-your-htc-desire/
3. No you won't get it, and returning to stock should you want to will obviously remove root. It's best to get your stock Vodafone ROM to have for warranty reasons...
It has been 16 days since I have my Galaxy S3 and has not felt the need to Root yet. before I had the Evo 4g, Samsung Galaxy S2 and after 2 or 3 days playing with them went and root it them. with this one I have not felt the need of rooting yet. reason?, maybe the Stock rom provides all I need or want. I particularly like the notification bar and all the options it offer. also the limited customization of the lock screen. also the option of battery persentage. but, who can stop the urge to root?. lately I saw the battery improvement on a thread and the better reception by flashing a radio(LF9). so my urge to root and flash is back. what do you guys think?.
I have had mine since the 7th and I have yet to root. I came from an epic and had that thing rooted after a few days of having it. I just haven't had the need to do it yet. This phone is solid and has all the little things in the stock set up that I would always flashed to have.

Perhaps finaly Phone companies has figure out that if they give us more candy we won't root. just a thouth.
I'd do it for tethering alone
If you think the stock Rom looks good and you don't want aosp, or any other tweaks rooting can provide, then don't root.
If you do root and don't like it you have the option to go back to stock and even un-root. You can even stay on stock Rom but have root. All up to you.
I like the stock ROM mostly, but I rooted within days just to get Titanium Backup Pro working. Like others have already posted - I had an Epic 4G before this, and quickly switched off of the stock ROM to various custom rolled ones before CM9 was available.

I rooted only to remove bloat with Titanium Backup and to easily restore all my apps from my Evo 3D. Also, as new updates come out, it may eventually be harder to obtain root. Figured it's easy, so I may as well now. As development picks up I'm sure I'll be flashing new stuff sooner or later.
I'm running the stock rom, infact after the last update I didn't even reinstall CWM. But I did root the phone as soon as I came home from the store. There are just too many things you can't do without root. The biggest for me is Adfree, but MyBackup, SDMaid, and a bunch others need root to fully function.
Yeah, I'd chime in and say at least root now and leave it stock until you find something you like better or don't like on your current setup.
Root
I came from the Infuse 4G on ATT. It was rooted running CM ICS. I have had this for 10 days a d not rooted yet. I would but with no computer I don't have any way right now as far as I have read yet. But I do like most everything and would only root right now for TiBu.

I only have linux boxes (and I'm too lazy to find a windows box), but I managed to root my sprint SGS3 today via the same method as the TF300 with one minor change:
I just made the symlink to /dev/block/mmcblk0p14 instead.
Code:
ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p14 tmp
The rest of the instructions can be found here here .

Sorry, I guess you probably still can't do that without a computer. You have to run as the 'shell' user, and I don't know of a way to do that other than adb.
Yes
I told myself I would not root until the 2 wks. return were up
Didn't make it a day. Not being rooted is like buying a car and having a governor on the throttle. I might not want to go fast but I want the option.
Well,,,,, I did it..... could not resist the temptation of rooting. after 17 days on stock wich I was happy I rooted just a few moments ago. now in the process of trying my first custom rom. downloading now Strongsteve Odexed Blue. and from there many, many, many more to come. Happy Rooting!!!!!
Hi guy,
Got my Rogers Galaxy S3 a couple days ago and loving it. The only thing that annoys me is the bloatware it comes with, which I don't need. I have googled this and came across people just saying to root the phone and install Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware. Has anyone tried to remove the Rogers bloatware and was successful?
I also know you can use root uninstall to remove bloatware. Is it safe to remove the Rogers applications?
I do not have a S3, but on all my other samsung devices(nexus s, gnex, captivate) they can remove any software when rooted.
I would second the recommendation to root and use Titanium Backup to remove the bloatware. I also am with Rogers and deleted most of the Rogers bloatware, minus the My Account. A stock rooted rom with a few tweaks is the way to go for me lol. But, there are many other roms to choose from if you are so inclined. Also remember to always make a Nandroid backup before doing anything! ha ha ha!! It has saved me a few times!
yes that is one of the most popular ways to do it, through rooting then titanium back up. I've done it and now I am also running CM 10.
Ya know where you go to uninstall a program? well you can freeze/disable them No need for root if you dont want to.
You could also install a custom ROM, but you would lose the TouchWiz features.
There's this mod that I use called Ashaman where basically you use your custom recovery to remove not only carrier bloatware but system apps that you might not need as well. (svoice, swhatever, live wallpapers). But of course you have to be rooted but it's still perfectly safe. The developer of the mod is implementing a restore option of bloatware in the near future as well. You should check that out.

After searching the forums for this I think I am safe to ask for a list of what can be deleted and removed vs what cannot. I have my phone rooted, I have installed Titanium, no-bloat and Rom Tool Box but there are some processes and oddly named features that I have no idea what they do.
I know that there is an installer that has been installing everything back every time I reset.
Does anyone have a list of Rogers and Samsung bloatware that is safe to remove with the above software.
Cheers

Counter?
I read somewhere about Samsung devices having a counter or something (so Samsung can know if you root i believe). Do these root methods up the counter or is what is the deal with that? sorry for being so uniformed, I have only had HTC and Motorola phones.

Yes they have a counter. You can get triangle away which will reset the counter. In original andriod development section, go to cf auto root and it should explain everything for you.
Thanks qbking77, love all your videos!
Thanks for the helpful guide :fingers-crossed:
So if we choose option 3, the All in one method, instead of option 2 that would allow for OTAs. What steps would one take to revert back to stock recovery to be able to except OTA updates? Just mainly concerned about the multitasking fix when that becomes available. I know devs will likely get it working and made flashable for those with the custom recoveries but Im just curious for my own knowledge.
Also, if one was to choose to take option 2 for a while, would you run this process over again and choose option 3 to re-root and install the custom recovery?
Extremely new to sammy devices so just want to have all my ducks in a row before I do the root. Not really sure if im going to flash any roms or not until a cm10 drops, but I may get bored in a day or two and decide to. So I wanna know which steps to take after initially choosing option 2 or option 3 during intiial root.
Thanks for the responsiveness how-to's!

You can use triangle away to reset counter after root but after you flash rom count will increase to value 1 .
From that point Triangle Away wont reset count which is bad news for those that use AllShare Cast Wireless Hub.
Hub does not work with flash count value 1.
From there only way to reset count is to flash stock tar
daemon still not running error
Any one else getting this?
OTA update, need to unroot first?
Hello,
So I did select option 2 for rooting, with no custom recovery and I wanted to know, when I do get this new OTA update for multiview, will I need to unroot first or should it install with no problems? I am assuming I'll probably lose root after I update with the OTA. Thanks again!

QBKING77,
Thanks for all of your videos. I routinely check out your Youtube sight before I do anything to my phones.
I am running the stock ROM and am not rooted. Will I be able to root my device if I accept the OTA or should I root first and then flash a pre-rooted stock Rom with the OTA? I have nothing against rooting, I just don't have the time right now, but I don't want to have to wait weeks until someone figures out how to root the new OTA ROM if it can't be rooted right off of the bat.
Thanks again.
Hey qbKing77, I have been checking out your videos on Youtube and those along with this thread have been very helpful. I am looking to root my Sph-L900 but I am new to rooting. One question is I love all the S-Pen functions and options. What options will keep this while rooting? Should I just root and keep a "Stock ROM" or can I bring in something like JellyBomb or Blazer (preferably JB cause I love the Customization he has done with it.). As of right now I'm not looking to lose those functions, also if i flashed that JB ROM after an OTA update will the Multiwindow be available or wait for an update to the ROM itself?
Again new to it, and I understand the guidelines of the Forum I am no noob to forums or tech just to rooting itself.
Thanks

So if I use QBKing77's "Unroot" method, that will reset everything(aka unroot), this will also reset the counter to 0? And if I wanna go back, just reroot again?
I am coming from HTC phones(my last 3 were a Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2 and EVO 3D) so just as BDawgTrap, I am unfamiliar with the counter that Samsung uses.
Thank you for all your helpful videos,I'm now a subscriber.I do have a question though,I'm rooted with option 3 and wanted to DL the newest sprint OTA system update. What needs to be done to do so?

You should be fine doing it the same way as if you had the prior firmware.
I had already manually added the LJC build to my unrooted note 2 and just did the rooting process and it went smoothly.
I am now rooted.
I've already bought it. I'm just waiting for it to come in the UPS/FedEx.
Here is the one I bought.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0099QRVZS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I've owned 3 Android devices prior to this. A Samsung Galaxy S, an LG Thrill 4G, and currently I have a Galaxy S3 that's seen better days. I rooted all three of them so I'm no stranger to flashing a custom recovery and ROM.
But as $350 is a lot to drop on a new phone (I had a gift card) I want to make sure I'm doing things right, especially with a new device I've never even operated before.
How do I install a custom recovery on the international Note 2? That's all I'm worried about for now. Because then I can do a complete system backup so I'll have a way to restore in case flashing CyanogenMod somehow ****s up.

Go to the General section, maybe the Q&A section, find easy guides to root. In fact, Chainfire's Auto-Root CF is what you want. There is a process that will install CWM recovery along with root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933542
I really suggest, before trying an AOSP ROM like CM that you first install a current Samsung 4.4.2 ROM. Then you'll be able to experiment with the awesome S-Pen features that were ported from the Note3. Really very excellent and worthy of a look. I will not suggest any because this thread will then become a debating thread over best ROM.
Good luck
i rooted my GN2 on the day i got it using Mskips unified toolkit its so straight forward and can root install custom recovery along with a mirriad of other functions.
Also used his tool root a couple of S3s and s3minis all worked flawlessly
