The phone should not be uncomfortable to hold. How are you measuring the battery temp? Two things that I am aware of cause heat; one is battery, the other is the CPU. My CPU runs around 100f-102f under normal use. If your battery is getting hot, there is a problem. My phone got uncomfortably hot the first day. I ended up doing a restore through Sony PC Companion and that fixed it. I've since had buildprop tweaks cause my phone to heat up beyond my comfort level. You either need to know your phone really well and troubleshoot the thing one by one or do a factory restore / reflash the ROM and take it slow on the app and tweak installs while testing each level of change. This is the way I do it. Other's may do it differently.

Mine is at 87 f right now just in my pocket data off but after opening this app and screen brightness at 50% its at 93 and it's only been a few minutes. I have a battery app it just says temp so I assume its my battery but anyways, how heavy you use the phone will alter its temp, I've had mine up to, if I recall correctly, 120f the phone will shut off when it's at a dangerous temp like my iPhone I left in my car to charge one summer day, we called my car the hot pocket, but the high heat shut it off and every time I tried to turn it on I got an warning and a shut off so I tossed it in the freezer. Anyways long story short, the heat you feel is how the phone keeps itself from over heating. If it's too hot for you lower your brightness that helps so much, but 100f isn't that bad for running temp

120f is a bit high for everyday use, but for gaming etc its normal.

U'll have to underclock it. 1.5GHz is hot while display on.
Lower down to around 1GHz or 972MHz. (I'm using it, to me its lag free)

Overheating

So I was wondering what temps you guys are seeing when your phone overheats.
My phone reboots when it hits 37 C, which seems awful low. Anyone else seeing such low reboot temps?

Mine doesn't reboot that low, the highest I have seen it go was like 43.7 or something
I've never had my phone reboot due to overheating even at 42°C. Running CM6.01

Hmm, this is getting frustrating. I've begun to reboot at around 37 C. Is there any way to change that number? Anything to reset?
Is that CPU or battery temperature? If battery then the CPU would be much hotter.

Battery... but it's weird. The battery temperature gets to 37 C, and then reboot. When I very distinctly remember it before going 45+ C without a problem.
And now I'm bootlooping. Seems to start up, and is still too hot, then reboots again. Anyone have this happen to them? Lower temp reboots?
Sounds like you may have permanently damaged your device, if your battery temp were 40+ degree celsius your CPU temp would be a sustained 15+ degrees hotter. Running your device this hot often certainly could damage it over time.

Try a standard or increasing voltage kernel if possible.

No no, my battery isn't that hot for long amounts of time, just, like when I'm surfing for a long time or something. Trying an undervolted kernel now.
Do you have a backup battery that you can try - see if you get the same results? Batteries do occassionally stop working properly.
My phone would reboot when using GPS in the car if it was on the dashboard or mounted - I checked the temperature when it booted and didn't get stuck in a boot loop and it was around 45c.....
I returned the phone to stock and brought it back to vzw, they gave me a new battery, phone still runs somewhat hot even stock.

But mine is rebooting at 37-38 C. Which is awfully low. I'm RUU'd, S-oned, and factory-resetted and STILL it happens. So it's a hardware problem.
Gonna take it into a Verizon store and demand a replacement on the spot x]
I can advisr from personal experience on your symptoms that you have one choice ... Return to verizon for a refurb. This is what happens when you have an early incredible with a faulty hardware radio. It gets to the point where it starts trying to compensate and super heats. You must return.
Every other suggestion would be a mask to an existing well known hardware problem.
I once left my phone in a black bag on a hot summer day. It went up to 50 C with no problems. It didn't reboot or anything.
I have one of the original Incredible's from launch day, it is usually around 43-45. Sometimes it gets warmer than that playing games. Never actually had any problems. The hottest it ever gets is on Z rom's. Those things have gotten it to 50 .
I'm on CM7 W/Slayher's 2.6.37 kernel, and it's at 42 just on the home screen. Mind you this is all on stock speeds. My phone doesn't like to overclock. Regardless of kernel. It can go to 1.113 sometimes, but any more = reboot.
On the HTC Incredible site, there is a FAQ which states the maximum recommended operating temp is ~60C.
I'm relatively sure there is no problem with the battery or the CPU doing up to ~90 for awhile because that's a fairly common temp for CPUs and Batteries to withstand. I'm sure that like most batteries , at >~50C it is less efficient, but I doubt the CPU is presented with any problems in that range.
Phones present a unique set of high-temp problems. Cooling sucks in those little enclosed boxes, and manufacturers definitely don't want your hand or ear burned, and are terrified of having a battery burn up in your hand or pocket, so that is probably why 60 is said to be max. I don't like picking up my phone when it's at all hot (~40C or more) but while experimenting with my own kernels and voltages and overclocking, I've had it reboot somewhere around 60C. Was it the temp, or was it overclocked too far? I have no idea, but I lowered both and stopped taking stupid chances with it.
This thing of rebooting at 37C seems nuts, inappropriate, and most likely a defective part, or one of the many services or apps that perhaps does the wrong thing (accesses verbotten memory, bad ptr, etc..)
A bad example for sure, but at work, many of our HP or Dell Racked servers (DL380's etc), are too hot to touch while running. They have enough fans to power a 747, and it just makes it pretty clear that in some cases, processors and other components can run at amazing temps.

Overnight charging = phone very hot + won't wake up

Hi there! I had this problem with my Nexus twice now, that's why I'm bothering you.
Long story short - I plugged my phone to charge in the evening, woke up in the morning to find that the phone is VERY hot(area around the camera on the back) and switched off, and won't turn on. After doing a battery pull the phone switched on, the battery was full and the temperature was at 46C. It happened to me on the Monday night but I thought it is just something silly, but it happened to me today again. I was not using any hardware intensive application before I went to bed, just writing emails with my GF.
Any ideas?
ive left mine on overnight every night since saturday and its not overheating
Leave it in a chocolate tin to keep it cold, with ice below it, charge it in the morning and see if its a app

I'd do a factory reset and see if it does the same after another night of charging with no apps on it.
If it does the same, the phones probably defective.

Have you modded the phone since you got it? Like rooting or installing any mods.
How many apps have you installed on it? Any that may keep running in the background?
If it does it again then I would advise going into Settings, Backup & Reset and restore the phone to factory settings. Then put the phone back on charge for about 8 hours and sede if the temperature goes up again. As mentioned it may just be an app thats making the phone go hot but if it goes hot after a factory reset then you will need to send it back for replacement.
Mark.
The first thing to go from heat damage is the battery. 50 degrees celcius and up is in the battery killing temperature range.
As long as it's under warranty I guess do what you want. But I'd highly recommend setting up an app like setcpu to force a lower clock speed when temp>44 celcius, just to be safe. No sense in killing a battery while trying to fix the problem.

I leave mine on charge overnight, and it doesn't do this... so I'd agree with others in that it's either a rogue app or a duff handset.
Didn't they say that one of the CyanogenMod devs was working with Samsung on the Nexus? Maybe he implemented "sleep of death" as a feature

The phone is not rooted, it's not running any mods. The only two applications that run constantly in the background are the DoubleTwist AirSync module and Llama profile manager(and the default weather+news widget). As both have not been tested with Android 4.0 it may be it. Is there any good app to display the current CPU usage by a process? Just like "top" in the console.

Mine was on charge last night and showing 28% on screen. I rebooted the phone and when it came back on, it was suddenly showing as 48%.
I think the battery reporting may be slightly borked, but this could just be down to the battery being run in. I'm just going to keep an eye on it for now.

Thank you, I have used different task managers but none of them displayed CPU usage.
I have discharged my battery pretty much completely, and now I'm charging the phone again, with my battery monitoring app running - at 50% capacity now the temperature is 42C. Can it be normal? The task manager shows that no process is using any CPU time.
That is hot but not that bad. Upper 40's celcius (47-49) is not good. And 50 is critical. Download setcpu and downclock the cpu to 500mhz while charging to help keep the temperature low in case an app spikes cpu usage that doesn't show up in task manager.
Sometimes just flipping the phone so the back is exposed is enough to cool down a phone.
Keep in mind most electronics have solder that will melt between 120 to 180 degrees celcius (248 - 356 farenheit!). While your phone should never ever get close to that, 50 degrees celcius pales in comparison. But it can kill the battery.
Seems most people who have had the problem of their phone spiking in temperature only have it happen a couple times and that's it.
I really recommend setcpu as you can have it run your phone slower when it hits a certain temperature to help keep it cool. As well as sound a notification that it has past that temperature.
It will prevent damage while you try and find out what may be causing the spike.
Though 42 degrees celcius is relatively normal for charging temperatures.
For my phone I have it set at 44 degrees celcius. I'd rather catch it before it gets even close to bad.

Same here.
Although, its not too bad. The device gets hot at the same region (top of the phone, near there camera). I've had the phone for 2 weeks now. Done plenty of research, still trying to decide if I should return the phone (if this is hardware issue).
So far, read a bunch of forums and threads with ppl saying the same thing in different ways. Haven't heard from any one who says their gnex does not get hot during heavy use. What I have read, are some ppl saying it heats up less as more time passes.
I guess ill just hold on to my phone and hope for the best.

Just turn the brightness down, I haven't gotten it higher than around 100, and that's with the brightness all the way up.

I ran a little test while using Navigation, screen on, no protective case on. This is with a freshly booted phone, so no other apps running. Data is cpu temps using Temp+CPU Pro app.
Not charging: 102 deg. F
Charging: 112 deg. F
Charging and with silicon case on : 115 deg. F
I would think these temps are well acceptable. If your phone approaches 125-130 deg. f, then I would begin to worry. Surely, there is some overheat mechanism in place??

SGSIII Heat & Battery Issues?

Background: Rooted, stock rom.
- Just bought the phone on Saturday, charged it fully and played around with it on Sunday literally just moderate texting, making short calls, and taking a couple of pictures and the battery pretty much dies by 2 PM. Will the battery life improve over time?
This is with the settings tweaked to maximum battery conservation (15% screen brightness, NFC/S Beam off, No motion controls, battery savings on, the works.)
- Also, in that time the phone seemed to be fairly hot, I cannot recall the temperature, but it was hot to the touch. And when I tried downloading the OTA update from T-mobile, the bottom half of the phone (everything below the battery) became drastically hot. But the battery remained relatively cool. Is this something I should worry about?
I'd just like to know so I can exchange the phone while I still can.
I just got mine on Friday and I noticed the same issue. It seems to get hot whenever its doing something data intensive live streaming a youtube vid or downloading a app.
Thanks for the response.
I used it for about 15 minutes this morning reading a web page on Chrome and it seemed to get warm.
Also streamed HD YouTube as well as Spotify for about 15 minutes and it's still warm.
The thing is, these are the first really data-intensive things that I have done so far.
I'm going to go through a whole day just to see what happens.
Forgot to add that I even reduced my CPU through SetCPU to 1.2Ghz the since I rooted it
It's at 87% after 2h 20m 46s on battery.
With only 42m 23s of screen time.
It should calm down after a couple of charge cycles. For battery. Also make sure auto brightness, auto sync is off, gps, motIon control, voIce cmd, etc.
I dont use the battery saving feature and get great life. But I remember a few times it getting hot after a fresh flash but it always calmed down for me. Getting warm is normal, especially if on the charger while using.
Theres a lot of features I like but dont use much so for me its worth the few extra seconds to turn it on/off.

So I have completed my school day.
11h 25m 45s on battery
Battery percentage is at 57%.
I barely used the phone however.
Sent about 10 texts, went on Chrome and searched the web for about 15 minutes, took 8 pictures, instagram for 3 minutes.
Also kept getting e-mails (probably like 10 of them)
I turned on Power Saving mode as well.
Screen is the highest with 1h 32m 24s using 38% on my battery.
Would this be normal on the stock T-mobile rom with no updates?
I've never had an Android phone before so I wouldn't know.
But after researching, some people managed to be at around 70% usage by the end of the day. While doing more intensive tasks.

I 2nd the bad carrier coverage notion. Just as a test, I put my phone into airplane mode while watching a video. I watched the same video while out of airplane mode. The battery drained faster while on the carrier's network than not. I noticed the signal meter was at 3 bars before I played the video.

Better Through Time
I decided to instal CM10 on my phone and it really did help.
I just got home from school/finished most of my day and here's the update:
63% left
9h 45m 29s on battery
1h 21m 33s screen on time
This makes me feel so much better considering that I actually used the device more today than ever before.
(HD YouTube videos, streamed Spotify, lots of internet browsing, more calls/texts.)
Even with the added usage CM10 seemed to have improved my battery life by a lot!
Not sure if I can totally attribute it to CM10 or just more charge cycles, but everything seems to be working better for me.
Thanks for all of the help!

Same problem. I just assume that's where the processor is? It doesn't bother me. Its quite funny because the top of my screen is cold. And it doesn't get hot when I'm using it for browsing, texting, the usual. Not unless I play a game.

I have noticed on my phone that since installing Liquid Smooth rom has resulted in much better battery life than on the stock rom. However, ever since I have owned the phone, if i have the screen on for more than 10 minutes or so the screen gets really warm right above the home button. Anybody else experiencing this?

I'm assuming that Samsung's stock TouchWiz isn't as optimized as the ROMs that the devs make on here.
Which is a definite plus to having a device that has a strong community of developers behind it.
That happens to me as well. I have kind of gotten used to it. Just slip on a case so when you hold it your hand doesn't get sweaty and you should be fine. I would assume that's where the processor lives, but I am not too certain.

[Q] what is your Galaxy s3 average temperature

My Galaxy s3 gets hot
My Normal Temprerature is 90 Fahrenheit
this is normal?
i´m only turned on a wifi, or watch a movie on youtube and my phone is already hot
and with the 4g turned on is more hot around 100 Fahrenheint
i have the t-mobile version. android 4.1.1 jelly bean stock rom
Yeah mine gets pretty hot too... I've seen it hit 105. Very bad for the battery :/
Have you checked for rogue processes? Get GSAM Battery Monitor or Watchdog Lite and see if anything is consuming a lot of CPU cycles.
Also, try CPU Sleeper - it shuts one of the cores off when the phone goes to sleep which gives huge battery savings.
I wouldn't do all that doing something that it wasn't intended to be, shutting down a core. Android does a good job with all that, if it gets really really hot
Buy a new battery or better yet start from scratch see if you get it stock. My s3 never been really hot, and I know what hot is coming from the g2x and the first galaxy now those phones will burn you.

The G2x was nothing compared to the Sensation! OUCH!
And it only shuts a core off when its asleep. You can uninstall the app and it reverts so no harm there.
I have a second battery and it runs on the hot side side as well. My roommate has a white GS3 and I have a titanium GS3 and his battery lasts a hell of a lot longer than mine. It may just be defective. I couldn't get his past 90 degrees.
My battery is running 83/84 degrees, but then I recently changed to a 3200 which fits the original compartment.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, these phones are so random. Kinda like the thing with the dark dots dead pixel when screen is off some come in horrific shape from the box.

How much on screen do you get with that battery and do you have a link? Also, is it NFC enabled? I don't need NFC just curious.
Mine was at about 95-98F when I was tethering and stayed pretty constant. The phone was a bit warm, but not worryingly so (it's gotten hotter).
Honestly, I don't think it's a big deal these temperatures seem within normal parameters.

I guess for me the fact the screen gets so hot is what bothers me... and the heat on the back, it goes through my Incipio case (both the rubber and the plastic) and its hot at the bottom of the phone... the temp readings are battery only since it seems the processor doesn't have a temperature monitor - that or none of the kernels support it.
galaxy s3 high temp
10 mins of subway surfers and my s3 gets to 107-110 . Is this normal. I have hard reset the device and running on jelly beans 4.1.2 with minimum applications loaded. Normal temprature of the device when idle is 89 to 95. Only the bottom half of the screen gets hot. Took it to the service center they did nothing but reformat it.
