Hi.Please post the reason you bought the sgy here. Its not the best one in the market and everyone would have a reason they bought shgy and y duos and noy the galaxy s,htc explorer etc.
For example:-Because you were broke at that time
Because You were influenced by your dad
Because you felt it was VFM etc
My Reason
I bought the sgyd as it was my first phone and my dad wouldnt loan me enough cash to buy a better one.:crying:
I bought this phone cause i thought it was good
I bought this phone cz i was out of my mind

There's a section for questions bro.
Btw it's my first Android phone, I had no idea about android and ofcourse price is a reason behind my sgy. Whatever it is, I love my SGY.

It was vfm phone at that time (7k)
+ better in many aspects than galaxy fit (10k)
Also, sgs is nowhere near to sgy dude -_-

I didn't knew about android custom rom, cm stuff... If I knew that this phone can't play hd games and don't have cm I never buy that.. I would buy a mini or fit.
Btw I really impressed in the sgy TV ad in Indian channels..
why not ?
I bought this because it was the cheapest android phone I could get, I'm only 14 so my parents wouldn't buy a nexus or even xperia.
I earned some money on my own for the first time in my life. After buying my mom a small gift i decided to spent the rest on a new phone to replace my ageing symbian device .
I went to shop tried a few Nokias but was left unimpressed by UI then i picked up the demo galaxy y and played with it for a while and was blown away since it was my first encounter with android - bought it then and there.
And i don't plan on selling it any sooner either if i collect enough money i may buy an ipad or some other tablet but as of now sgy perfectly serves all my needs
Because I can't offered much money to buy high range mobile.
Becoz It was the best phone in my budget...
Tottaly noob to smartphones that days..
Knew nothing about android or anything...
Was having a old generation SPICE phone..
Phone looked good..was cheap and somewhere i read cheapest and the best smartphone...
Well i am still looking for the guy who made that comment...
**rooting is new for me...and i am noob to root...**
I just wanted dual sim phone.. had no idea what android was... budget was 8k.. somehow convinced dad for 9k phone..
I was not into smartphone due to touch screens.. as its not ideal for msging... well now I don't msg anymore.. due to xda I.e is

It was my birthday gift but it's awesome and i liked it and its my first andriod phone

I was stupid didn't know anything about android phones or smartphones in general and it was cheap lol if I knew then what I know now I'd probably of gotten a mid-range device as my first device really and truly can't wait to get rid of this this was good for like 7 days then all the features it lacked started rolling in.........next phone G NOTE 2!! lol
Hit THANKS you ungrateful bastard...plz
I bought this phone because... wait-a-minute! I got this phone from my dad because he had a tough time using it.
It was okay for a while because I finally had a touchscreen phone to play around with until I realized I can't play a lot of games coming from the market and that it didn't support flash. But then I discovered rooting then this forum, now i love tinkering (and bricking) with my SGY.

As the thread states my friend just got a Nexus on contract and is using it to pay off his O2 contract as he already has a sim free iPhone 4S.
I can sell my GS2 for around £200-230 so just need to pay the difference to get it up to £300
Played around with it a tiny bit and it looks ok but not really sold on it however I do love the pure google experience (previous nexus one owner)
Good deal or not?
Yeah! Honestly, I got this phone yesterday and you will NOT be disappointed. The screen, the smoothness of ICS, it's just a freaking monster man. And You're only going to be paying around £70-£100 for the phone so you can't go wrong!
Edit: Just read you already own a GS2. I would not be so sure then, it depends on how desperate you are to get ICS, because once that hits the GS2 the only thing that will be to the Nexus' advantage is the screen and dev support, which is more than enough for me to go for the Nexus lol.
Decisions decisions....
Get it! and sell it me small profit for yourself
It's really a beast! Some of my favorite things are the screen, led, and the software buttons they are geinus!
Honestly, if I were you, I would wait until next year Q2 2012 when it is rumoured that quad core phones that are coming out. I'm pretty sure there are already ICS roms for the Galaxy S2 and you're getting it next year anyway from Samsung. However, I haven't had any experience with the Nexus so I can only tell you from what I think, I haven't actually compared the fluidity and smoothness of both phones.
keep your gs2 and wait.for.ice.

Good deal, go for it while you can still get that for your GS2.
I sold my GS2 for the Nexus and haven't looked back. It's just a better overall device and probably one of the coolest gadgets I've owned.

Gotta agree. There are a few users here that I see post the same useless drivel. Makes ya wonder.
Anyway, like I said before, go for it. You won't be disappointed.
Side note: The touch screen buttons have just made other Android devices look antiquated.
I am pretty sure I will if my friend doesn't decide to keep it.
£300 is not a great deal considering a brand new one sells for around £428.79. If you do not like it, you should be able to sell it for more than £300.

nice signature. lol.
It kind of depends. Since you already have a GS2 it's not really an upgrade but a lateral move from one phone to the next. The GN2 will definitely outlive the GS2 as far as official updates and dev support is concerned, but the GS2 already has plenty dev support right now and will likely have it for as long as you own/use the phone. The screen on the GN is way better, the processor is just as good, the GPU and camera on the GS2 are the only real advantages so it pretty much evens out in my book. It really is going to come down to personal preference. The reason I jumped to the nexus line was because I was a Vibrant owner and never saw a froyo update on my phone while Samsung promised and promised. The dev community and custom gone were the only things keeping me happy with my phone. About a week after the Nexus S was released I walked into a Best Buy and put my phone running a custom froyo rom with an overclocked processor up against a bone stock display model and the display model Nexus won every battle. I bought the phone a few days later and haven't looked back since. Now there are a few caveats to the story, one being that I had a variant of the GS and that Samsung had indeed finished the froyo update about two months before the release of the Nexus S (just not for the American variants) but at the end of the day, the Nexus S is going to receive an official update of ICS and the GS isn't despite them having nearly all the same hardware components. The devs are still there and they will give the phone a proper update but it would be easier with an official kernel to play with. Just my thoughts. Personally I'd go with the GN unless you plan on playing multiple high end games that require you to have a better GPU.

The stock google experience is swaying it for me right now and it looks like I will have to pay a minimum of £80 to £100 + selling my GS2.
Will see my mate on Thursday and take it from there and will let everyone know if I suddenly become a GN owner
My wife said no I cannot trade so I said it's an christmas present to myself so may have to sweeten her up a bit haha

Actually its a very very good deal. Its 429 + vat which is more like £520. Also considering its from his friend and not some random stranger he can be pretty sure there's not some weird fault with it or something dodgy. Its pretty close to having a brand new phone with £220 off
Personally for around £100 I would probably upgrade. I agree with other posts its more of a lateral move, but the SGS2 is soooo common now, especially in the UK, and its coming up to a year old soon. The Galaxy Nexus will stay 'new' for a while. Also remember the GN resolution is the native resolution for ICS and what it was designed for. Although other phones with lower resolutions will also get ICS i'm sure there'll be some compromises somewhere.
Anyway its all opinion, but for me i'm slightly for the GN. BTW I upgraded from a N1 to a Galaxy Nexus, and my only experience of a SGS2 is 5 minutes with my friends one at the pub.
Interesting as o2 would let me pay off my remaining 2 months of my contract so i could get the galaxy nexus earlier.
They told me they do not allow this anymore and for that they have lost a customer, they never even tried to do me a deal.
I pay £41 a month for unlimited everything on my new contract which would mean i will pay £984 over the 24 month contract.
Hes going to be well out of pocket once he pays off his contract is o2 let him.
Text my mate to say I am going for the GN so now it's just down to when I go and get some cash for my phone and when I get to see him next.
Good timing as well as he was considering selling it tomorrow!
I bought a galaxy nexus and returned to my s2...
Only the screen is better on this phone and the new os, everything else isnt worth spendig money on it...

It's costing my friend around £200 to pay off O2 and he managed to get the GN for FREE on 12 months at vodafone so he will actually make around £100 from this and will also be on a 12 month agreement not 18-24 months.
On o2 he pays £37-38 a month and Vodafone will be £41 a month so makes sense really for him to sell it and for me to buy it lol
Do you guys think, that it is still worth to buy a Nexus?
My Evo 3D kind of broke (screen..) its like I could handle the damage, if I knew, that google would release a new phone in the coming 3-5months, but if you guys think not, I guess i'll buy a Nexus~

Google will probably release a new Nexus during the end of the year ,so best thing to do ny in my opinion , is to buy a Galaxy Nexus now to get all the benefits (updates mainly) , and when the new one is realised sell it at a good price on Ebay in order to buy the new Nexus
That's what I'll do anyway

Well I know this is gonna mostly be my first and last thread, sorry. But anyways onwards to the question is, is it still worth it to buy one? I've found that my local Koodo's Mobile (Canadian phone provider) is selling the Samsung Galaxy S2 X for $300 dollars off contract brand new. Which it is identical to the T-Mobile variant. I do realize that the phone itself is about a year old, and was again wondering is it still worth it to buy one, or wait until the next nexus phone or flagship phone instead?
My intent for the purchase would be honestly to get a gift for my mom, since she still on an old phone. She isn't too tech savvy, so she'll be using mostly Facebook, Skype, Youtube, Netflix on WiFi, being that the phone is so large, the pricing and all. If not would an iPhone be easier for her to use because of iOS?
TL;DR - $300 Samsung Galaxy S2X/T-Mobile Samsung S2, should I buy or not, or buy something simple like an iPhone for her to use?

I would say go for it! Development has been really great lately for our devices, we just got CM10 and CM9 is going strong!
300 brand spakin new is a steal. I got mine off craigslist for 270. I would easily fork over 30 more for a BRAND new phone.

I think I might just get it, and if she doesn't like it I'll keep it for myself. Since her contract is about to end soon, so I'll just pay for an upgrade to whatever phone. I have been eyeing AOKP on my Nook Color, that I got in the states, but haven't full commitment and stayed with CM 7.2.
I have another question which is about the phone itself, which I know I shouldn't post, but. What is the recommend kernel and rom if I should even consider rooting it, which I do plan to if I purchase it. If its compatible with Sixaxis Controller, is it strong enough to emulate say something like a PS1 or a N64, is the toolkit the easiest way to root and last question I swear, does do I have to purchase a certain type of adapter for MHL or is it a universal thing?
EDIT: Because I plan to make it somewhat of a gaming hub where I can emulate my favorite classic games, and use it like a HTPC since XBMC is being released I believe.
Aokp is fine running psx, haven't tried n64. Haven't tried sixaxis either. Actually any of the popular roms are fine.... This phone is pretty beastly. If anything you can stick to the provided kernel that flashes with the ROM or tdj maybe eugene? I'm not sure if he has updated his lately. Btw you should really flash a custom ROM if you give it to your mom because stock ics trend to be buggy.

As much as I cannot stand an iPhone, Apples BS,etc. The iPhone is definitely user friendly for basic functions. Apps that we have are free but an IPhone user isn't typically wanting to tether, NFC, or anything else we have as a feature.
I encourage you to buy one used. Maybe that way, you could not give direct profit to the already rediculous "patent thief".
Let us know what you decided.

As does T-Mobile. And about previous comment of iPhone being user friendly, android is even more user friendly. Yes d you're but going to hack the **** out of it then I recommend touch wiz miui.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah I've notice the Chinese made MIUI,is similar to the iOS in someways. I think I'll buy the phone brand new for the sake of it, let her test it out replacing her regular phone for a few days, and if she likes the hardware and how the touchscreen works I'll install MIUI for her. If not, no point returning and I might as well keep it, install a rom which I like, and replace my Blackberry. Again like I said her contract is about 6 months away, they'll call her saying "3 Year Contract blah blah blah", which then I'll do the honors of paying for the upgrade myself.
And I do say, the price bought outright blows the iPhone out of the waters.
That's an amazing price for a brand new hercules.. Not to mention it's still one of the best phones you can get.

Just get her the SGS2 and be done with it, way better phone
Get her something easy to use. I got my father a pantech crossover and he just couldn't get it. He was so good with his blackberry so I figured it would be easy. Wrong.
If you do get her an s2 make sure you set it up for her.
If your choices are the S2X and the iPhone, I would take the S2X. You're not gonna find a new iPhone for $300, and iPhones don't have expandable storage. If you want easy navigation try flashing MIUI like mentioned, or maybe JoyOS which is basically an IOS clone.
As long as it isn't rooted with all that mumbo jumbo crud, galaxy s phones are total parent friendly! I jumped my mom into the Android game with a galaxy s 4g and she loves it. Hell, every time I show up with my phone she always gets impressed by it.
300$ is a total steal for what you're getting and you should totally do it!

Just got it on contract with TMobile. I looked at the s3, and couldn't really justify paying $130 more for the s3 than the s2. They are both dual core 1.5 ghz phones with 8mp cameras that take full hd video. Whatever else it has just wasn't worth the extra $. Lots of other people will do the same math.

SHARE ALL YOUR EXPERIENCES SO WE CAN GET A GOOD LAUGH AT THE MEMORIES WE HAD WHEN WE BOUGHT OUR SGY, MAYBE ITS YOUR 1ST SMARTPHONE OR YOU ALREADY HAD ANOTHER ONE BEFORE,
BUT ANYWAYS,
HAVE FUN
HERE's MINE:
i got mine on my 1st job and 1st salary,
i personally knew nothing about android then, except that it was a phone OS,
the Y craze was mainstream then,
it was november something,
20 somethin days since its 1st release,
at first i never planned to buy a Y since i have a good old nokia 3690,
was just walking in a mall,
saw this cellphone shop,
my eyes were seduced by Y,
it was sleek, thin, and beautiful,
it spoke "buy me! buy me!" in my head,
it was 9PM and the store was closing,
so i tested it first, and i was amazed,
asked them to please wait for me while i get money from the bank since my debit card was not active yet,
i ran really quick to the ATM,
withdrew 6000 for the phone,
went back and luckily they did wait for me,
i was able to buy one of the last 2 stocks of SGY left on the whole mall
never had any regrets for my good trusty Y,
the 1st phone i've loved so much,
me and my GF even fight because of it sometimes,
because i get mad when she taps the screen to hard,
i have so many good memories with my Y,
its a part of me and of my life and i'll never forget this experience even when im old and dead
Here's mine..
I was using chat 332(don't remember d actual model) and it was getting old so I askd my father to get new phone and after 3 months of crying I got my cute y....(my father liked it more than me)
And I love this phone

Almost same story with me. My mom bought her new Galaxy Mini, it was the first time in my family anyone bought a touch phone and like you I got seduced by it Those days 3G was new and famous, and alot of ads of Galaxy Y came on TV. So finally decided to buy a touch phone, Galaxy Y was not in my mind... Went to the shop and first bought a wave phone. It had huge screen but videos were getting pixelated in it so I went to that shop the next day and got that phone changed. There were loads of options for me but the little Y had free 500 mb of 3G data free in it. I wanted to experience 3G once so I bought this phone, but my luck was really bad that the 3G offer was expired when I bought it. After 3 months I got to know that my phone had 832 mhz processor!! My friends told me that.

even if the G1 has CM10, i'm never trading my Y
Last month
I wanted to buy a laptop but they are much costly... My parents said they will buy me one next year...I have an old dual core PC and Nokia c1-01 and my friends had android fit/p500 etc...I convinced my mom for Samsung champ 3g then I thought about android....2 of my friends had the sgy....
I didn't liked it that much then I saw it has gpu and nice processor.
Suddenly my cousin came and recommended me this lovely phone.... Took the money and went to Delhi(my cousin lives there) and bought it the same day....I hadn't eaten food whole day because of craziness.....
Hehehehe
Bricked my phone the next day via stock recovery (installing repencis).....lol
I thought cwm method is long and I've got the same options in stock recovery.......
I thought I lost my phone and customer care wont repair it...... Thanks to doky......lol
My first soft brick freaked Me the most ....
Will never forget that day....
Respect devs. I Love my galaxy y because of them.....^.<
it was like a month after i graduated, i was still a symbian loyalist back then but when i heard news of nokia dumping their symbian for windows thats when i decided to migrate to android, but i was a little low on budget back then so the only thing i could afford at that time was a sgY, and thats how i me and my Y met::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I was using an old nokia before but I convinced my parents to get me a new phone went to the store and the shopkeeper showed me straight galaxy mini and I asked him is there any other phone and them he showed me galaxy y and I felt in love with it it looked so nice I rejected galaxy mini and got it and have I am very happy with it

I wanted to buy a new phone coz my n97 was getting old.. and my budget was low.. then I saw many tv ads of sgy and I liked it and search about sgy and found that ut has many feature.. so I decided to buy that. After 1weak later I buy that one.... and next day I rooted my phone for playing hd games and i'de downloaded many games like crazy and played them.. after some day I install a custom rom and some day later my phone bricked and I became mad I didn' t know what to do. some day later I unbrick it by installing chobits rom and now on xda. Hello! A guy from my company wants to sell me this phone and the truth is I am not sure if it will be a good move.
I already have Samsung Galaxy S+, it's pretty good but sometimes I feel like I want something more (and the 512 mb ram is the main reason behind that). Also, SGS+ had pretty small group of XDA developers working on it (but they sometimes do amazing job!), and I would be very happy if my new phone would be more popular here. Any thoughts on that, guys? Thanks in advance!

Here is last weeks version of your thread.
I think this phone is still good despite it being made in 2011. I bought this phone 3 days ago when I had a the Atrix HD. I honestly can tell the differnec in performance with other phone despite this phone having a old processor. And the galaxy nexus forum has way more devs then any forum.
