I can recieve text messages, but it only pops up and I cannot view it in messages.
Anyone know where the messages db file is located?
Which folder so I can delete and start over
bumping for justice....
this could very well solve my problem since i can view them in popups (via handcent) but when i go into the conversation screen or message inbox, there is nothing there.
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
Rename the mmssms. Db file to. .Bak. Or delete
That will fix it

were you having the same issue as ME?
Yes exact issue as you.
Well it wasn't my phone, it was for a friend.
But yes it fixed it 100 percent.
Try it
Make sure to reboot first after deletion.
I've been getting random complete loss of all SMS data, so I just tried this and then used SMS Backup+ to restore my messages. So far it's fine, but I have 2800+ messages, perhaps that's the issue? Hopefully it solves my problem though.
The problem is back and with a vengeance.

Not sure if anyone else had this: I did a ROM upgrade on my XDA IIs, then restored all my data from a back up on my PC. most things seemed OK (though some GPRS settings were lost), but some old SMS messages and emails now show in the relevant folders, but have no 'envelop' next to them. I can't open them (you see the window try to expand, but nothing happens), and I can't delete them either! Even 'empty folders' doesn't work.
Does anyone know if there's a way of taking them out manually via explorer, or am I just stuck with them?
Thanks for any help
Vince
im having the same problem with my phone. i can send messages to deleted items but when i try to delete those althought they go away the number thats in deleted items shows in blue
Hello all!
Yesterday I made a backup of my call logs and SMS/MMS messages with PPCPimBackup, and today I reinstalled my phone using the official T-Mobile ROM, and i used PPCPimBackup to restore the backup.
Too bad, it didn't work. The call log was restored, but with the text messages it gave the following error: "ERROR_CSV_BAD_RECORD at line 936"
So I opened the backup with winrar, opened the .csm file containing the messages, and deleted line 936, compressed the .csm file back in the backup file, but it still would work. It said the file was corrupt, so I probably haven't compressed it right or something like that. Any way to still restore my backup, or is it permanently lost?
I can still read the messages from the .csm file, so maybe there's another program that can make a new backup from this file?

Hi Thaan.nl,
You shouldn't have done that. Compression is nothing to do with the file corruption. Deleting line 936 has mentioned by the error is not enough.
Your backup was fine, I can assure you, the problem resides in the csv parser, I know it is not perfect, and I already mentioned it.
Don't worry, nothing is lost (except line 936).
BTW, get the .csm file out of the .pib, open it with an editor like ultraedit which can show each individual record and showing line numbers.
Try to remove the whole text message that couldn't be parsed by the parser and do the restore. You don't need to put the .csm back in .pib, you can restore it directly.
Did you use PIM Backup 1.5?
If you need any help to restore your backup, don't hesitate to ask...
Cheers,
.Fred
Beware of this product. I restored backup messages to my mail account. After that I will no longer be able to send out any mail. The system says that my outgoing smtp server is incorrect, although it is correct. I tried deleting the account and recreate it but it does not help. The only way so far was to do a hard reset. It happened to me and caused me to do about 10 hard resets before I finally pinned it down to this being the culprit. I am able to recreate the problem very reliably. The addresses and appointment parts are okay. It's just the messages part that you should not use.
I have gone through too much pain with this, so I thought I should share it with all of you and be warned.
Cheers

Hi There!
I'm using PPCPimBackup (Version 2.8) to get all my contacts from my K850i to my new Xperia X1.
I created a whole phonebook-backup from the K850i in different formats:
contacts.csc, contacts.pib, pb.ldif, pb.vcf, pb.xml.
PPCPimBackup could only use contacts.csc or contacts.pib. When i try to restore one of them i use the field delimiter "," and map the values.
When i start the restore, i get the following error-message:
Error (ERROR_CSV_BAD_RECORD) : Bad record found at line 128.Nothing done.
Does someone know why this problem does occur?
EDIT: I solved the problem by reading other threads... Because the "corrupt Line" was the last line in the contacts.csc i added a "RETURN" to last line and now the program works great!

i am trying to empty my sms inbox but the option to delete/empty an entire message folder is deselected.
i go to: text messages > menu > folders, and option 3.Clear Text Messages in unable to be selected.
anyone have any ideas to re-enable this option?
thanks!
Ummm what Rom version are you using, did you update your phone at all ever since you recieved it. Cause all you do is pretty much go to menu > folders > menu (again) and delete message on every folder that you want to delete it from.

i am using rickys latest rom. i know how to do it, the problem is the option to delete all is not highlighted and available for selection...although i can see the option.
Oh yah I know what you mean try this go to your inbox where you can see your messages and you will have to delete each manually, and then empty the trash... this is the only way you can pretty much do it...
Does the ROM have Q Inbox Extender included?

is this the only way you can do it too? i swear that i used to be able to empty all messages from the folders menu...
same problem with mine- when deleting messages manually 1 by 1, the loading thing just spins and never actually deletes the messages. someone please help, my phone is so slow its almost useless
@johnnylavah:
Install Q Inbox Extender. It will give you the functionality to remove all messages.
@suprajztwenty:
Sounds like your cemail.vol is corrupt. Remove it, you will loose all your MMS, SMS and e-mail. It will re-create when you soft reset and should fix your issue.
easier fix, go to settings-accessability- sms threading-DISABLE!, then delete your messages, and go back and turn threading back on...hope it helps

Hello guys!
When I turned on my phone this morning all my sms was deleted. Is it any chance of getting them back?
My phone is now in airplane mode to prevent data to be overwritten, if the are any left
I have no idea how this happend, but there is a chance that SwiftKey Keyboard has something to do with it. It has been acting up lately, and it has permission to read the phones sms.. The app is now deleted, but the sms are still gone
please help me! :crying:
I have a rooted HTC Desire (Bravo) with CM 7.1.0
Did you by any chance save your SMS on the SD card? They may have lost if you did so and the sd card starts acting up.
Remove the sd card/ battery and re-start the phone and check.

No, I think they were stored in the phones internal memory.
But just to be certain I tried removing the batteri, sd-card and sim, but without any luck, still no sms

With a root file explorer, go to /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases. That is the sms databases' location. Are they still there? Are they empty?
Yes, there are still files in the databases folder
6 files: mmssms.db
mmssms.db-shm
mmssms.db-wal
telephony.db
telephony.db-shm
telephony.db-wal

With root explorer, i have an option to see words in the database, therefore my sms. Do you have that option?
How big are the mmssms databases?
I'm using Root Explorer (File Manager) 2.20
I think I can open the database-files in a text viewer.
Should I try opening mmssms.db in text viewer?
mmssms.db -----------> 1.00K
mmssms.db-shm ----> 32.00K
mmssms.db-wal -----> 50.18K

mmssms.db is the database that holds the sms. It's obviously empty.
The other two might be some kind of backups or something. First, copy mmssms.db to a safe location, then rename, mmssms.db-wal to mmsama.db, and reboot. If it didn't work, try the same with mmssms.db-shm. If that doesn't work either, then your sms are lost forever.
I didn't work
Are you sure that there isn't any other way to retrive sms?

Somehow your databases got emptied, and sms aren't stored anywhere else. So no.
The only other way is by having a nandroid backup. You could restore a part of them at least. Do you have one? If not, then you lost all your sms for good.
I understand :crying:
But thank you anyway, much appreciated
PSA I guess is what this might be, just had an issue with moving SMS's from one phone to the p6 and thought I'd share in case it helps someone else.
Been getting my phone set up and one of the things I did was use SMS Backup and Restore to back up the messages from my 2Xl over to the 6p. It was roughly 120K text messages over the last 4 years.
The import 'seemed' to go okay but it didn't. I don't know if its a volume/count issue or a android 12 issue or a p6 issue but the messages app was kind of fried after the import. It would freeze/hang, send messages into oblivion etc and had 6(ish) just blank icons and blank entry lines at the bottom of the text list that 'side flashed' like they were loading but never did. I let it sit for about 12 hours thinking it might be an index issue or something but it just never recovered. Sometimes I'd hit send and it would go out, other times I'd get the ding but it wouldn't show up on my side, and from what I can tell never went out. I tried to delete conversations and they'd sometimes disappear from the messages app but on a reboot they'd be back.
Best guess is the SMS database got jacked up by the restore and only a complete delete would fix it.
I then tried to use SMS Back up and Restore to delete the messages from the app using the feature under Tools in the app and it also just hung on "Deleting" and never finished after about 6 hours.
So... I ended up having to use a terminal to kill the smsmms.db and db-journal files out of the telephony folder, reboot, wipe messages cache and storage to clear it. I was just one step short of doing a firmware re-install with the -w option but this seems to have worked the way I expected.
If you have a need for this step for some reason, on a rooted phone, install any terminal app from the play store, run it and then type the below. The commands for those who are familiar with terminal is get superuser (you'll be prompted by Magisk to allow), change directory to the place where the SMS database files are stored, list the files there, I only had the two, remove each file.
su
cd data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/
ls
rm smsmms.db
rm smsmms.db-journal
Close the terminal.
Wipe Messages cache and storage.
Reboot.
You should now have a blank slate in the messages app.
Not ideal for me but I'm not sure yet if you can copy just individual threads over. I don't need all the "Hey you want to sell your house?" and "Medical coverage is going to expire" and "here's your MFA code" threads or threads from years ago.
All you need is SQLite to open the smsmms.db file and delete all the cruft
