Should I Switch to the M? - Droid RAZR M General

For the past 2 years I've had the Thunderbolt. I never got around to rooting it until the problems I was having were so painful I threw caution to the wind last week. I'm rooted and running SkyRaider at the moment with plans to try NuSense next month (maybe sooner).
Our contract is up at the end of the month and the wife is after me to get her a true smartphone (she just has email now). If I'm going to have to change our plan and do a new contract for her anyway I'm debating on whether or not I should ditch the TBolt and get the Razr M. It seems to have great battery life which would be awesome.
So changing the plan is a no-brainer to save about $60/mo but I can't decide if I should upgrade the phone while I'm at it. It's finally behaving like I'd expect.

Its quite an amazing little phone..the only downside to it is I've always had flagship devices that get unlocked and have a lot of ROM options ..this phone does not but all in all I'm loving it

The RAZR M is a great phone but it is unlikely to be a device that sees much by way of developer support.
If you're happy with good hardware and a stock ROM experience then go for it. If you prefer to have a lot of custom ROM options then i suggest looking elsewhere.

Coming from Atrix 4G, I'm going for it (waiting for my M to be delivered) even if there is no HDMI, no fingerprint...

Why don't you think there will be developer support? You're thinking we won't be able to flash much? Are development efforts going towards other platforms instead?
I'm a flash newb but I like the flexibility. I just flashed NuSense ICS today.
Sent from my NuSense'dThunderbolt.

We won't get much support mainly because of the locked boot loader and this isn't a flagship device ...devs tend to move toward those
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app

This device has a developer edition, so the bootloader can be unlocked if you get it, and developers will get it... And even with the bootloader locked, safestrap seems to be working already (i haven't tried though). People interested in developing for this phone will get the dev edition (or the Australian xt905, maybe Japanese version can also be unlocked?), others can use safestrap to use custom ROMs.
Also, i think this phone is very interesting because it's the only recent phone with modern hardware that is not huge. Many people have been waiting for something line this (including me), and some of these are developers.
I have hopes for this phone to get some dev love, and cm10 alpha is already available...

Definitely a good phone
I've had the razr m for a month or so now and I am very pleased. It is lightning fast and my battery life is excellent. I'm getting 2 full work days out of a single charge. Granted, I don't play around on the internet a lot during the day but it is by far the best phone I've ever had. This is my third smartphone and second Motorola. The signal strength is head and shoulders bettter than a samsung and a little better than a HTC. It can fit in my pocket, too. I can't imagine what else I could want that this one doesn't do.

I didn't realize it was still new. I might wait a few months and see what happens.
I'm bummed that phones seem to be going the way of the iPhone with non-replaceable batteries. I hike and I like being able to carry spare batteries.

Battery packs alleviate the non removable battery issue. Albeit not as compact as a couple spare batteries.

I do have a PowerMonkey which might give me 1-2 charges if I'm stuck on the trail. If I can get 2 days out of a charge that might work fine for a weeklong hike. Still up in the air.

[Q] Smart to get droid incredible now?

Hi, Im due for an upgrade on april 3 and dont know what to get. It will be my first smartphone and I'm strongly leaning towards a brand new droid incredible my budget is 50 to 100 and i dont mind refurbs. I really want the thunderbolt but its out of my range unless the price significantly drops in a week. Sooo do you think it would be ok to have a droid inc. Comments,Concerns, personal opinions.
Much appreciated,Aaron
I can't say its a bad thing. I love my Inc! And I'll be stuck with mine for close to two years still. Join the party
Well the phone is already pretty long in the tooth. So when u buy it keep in mind that u may go through some extreme phone envy in the coming months. It's a good phone but certainly outmatched nowadays. My advice? Save up and wait for a better phone

I used my upgrade on an iPhone 4. Took it back, ignored the tbolt and got the incredible. IMO its like the nexus 1, it'll never die. Its a great phone and will continue to be. I like it better than my fascinate, Droid x, and iPhone.

Pocketing HTC Incredible
Really great phone, coming from a non-smart phone you may not be use to the lesser battery life so I suggest you think about getting an extended battery. This is actually my first smart phone too, it prompted the rest of my family to get droids (lol)
From the reviews I've heard about the TB is that it's not all that's cracked up to be. It's main feature of course is 4G- but many places don't have that coverage yet.
It's also rumored to have significantly less battery than the incredible. It's CPU is very comparable to the incredible's, although the graphics are reported to be a decent upgrade.
If you go with this phone I don't think you will be disappointed. If you root it and run a custom ROM on it, I think you'll love it
Personally I see no need for an upgrade anytime soon. The TB is not a good enough upgrade IMO, and in terms of battery life I see it as a downgrade.

Stock... maybe. But this is a forum full of developers, hackers, and rooters ... and with a rooted Thunderbolt and a nice kernel ... stock battery won't be a big issue...

So to answer your question simply: Yes, it is an upgrade.
One of the reasons Im buying the droid Inc is to root it and flash a custom rom? So does the unrevoked root work on 2.2.1 OTA update?

Yes, it can root the 2.2.1 update. I personally love my Incredible and I've had it since the day it came out. I'm waiting for a nice 4" LTE phone with a dual core processor and screen resolution upgrade, and of course, a front facing camera and a strong development team . If you buy it now, you won't regret it, especially for the $50-$100 price tag it has now.
This is a great phone super reliable and it has a great community support go for it. You will not regrets.

I would buy the phone again in a heartbeat. My friends phones they just bought still can't compete with the inc. Yes it is a smart choice
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If it were me I would wait a bit and get a Thunderbolt when the price drops and maybe you can come up with more money. The Incredible is great but the Thunderbolt is better imo.
You need to ask yourself if you will be happy with the phone for the next two years. I had a droid X but took my wifes upgrade to get the INC, this phone rocks!
With dual core phones already coming down the pipe I can't see the TBolt staying a high-end phone for long.
If you don't think that you will have phone envy, get the INC...you will love it. But if you are a complete phone whore like I am, I would suggest waiting for a few more months. Even if you still only have $100 there will be newer phones by then and there is always a deal going on with phones now.
best of luck to ya,
Personally I'd wait, I convined my dad to wait it out for the Inc2, I bought my brothers upgrade off him for $50 cos I wanted the TB but it's too large, i will wait for the inc2, and when my upgrade beomces avail april 2012 we'll see whats good then.

[Q] Who else is getting the Galaxy Nexus?

Well first off, my Incredible has been a POS ever since I dropped it and cracked the screen, even though I replaced it, it doesnt work right.
Not only that, Im tired of Sense. I was pissed that we got Gingerbread 8 months after it was announced and also even if I get a new HTC phone, Sense has just become too bloated for me.
So how many other people are going to become Android Purists and get the Galaxy Nexus?
you should do a poll.

If you hated Sense that much I'm actually pretty surprised you haven't rooted and put on an AOSP ROM. The DINC has had an awesome development community and we've been lucky enough to have a ton of really great ROMs ported for us and we were never tied to waiting for HTC or being stuck with Sense.

agreed. We have never been short on ROMs. I have found that there have been some really awesome ones with sense. Mctwist is running smooth as ever.
I'm probably going to get the galaxy nexus after it comes out and is clear from any major bugs, but that is just to upgrade because there is nothing wrong with my incredible. It has literally been incredible since the day I got it. It's rare for phones these days to actually be able to do that.
I am getting the Nexus and then using my incredible as a back up.
Will finally have a back up phone that is android.
Still torn on this myself. I will definitely have to see it in person, and I'd like to see how the developer community works out.

Same here. I like a lot - a LOT - of what I've seen and heard about the Vigor/Rezound, but I simply want to give the Galaxy Nexus a solid try. ICS from day one, cutting-edge updates. The ICS presentation in Hong Kong sold me, I don't want to wait weeks to months (I suspect a viable AOSP Inc build within a week of the AOSP ICS release - I'm not as confident on the Vigor, since we don't know the bootloader status yet, and this IS Verizon we're talking about) for ICS on a Vigor.
They're (rumored to be) coming out close enough together, that if I end up disliking my Galaxy Nexus and just like the Rezound better (you can bet I'll be in a B&M VZW store getting my hands on it) I can return and switch.
I really like my Incredible a lot, and I'm floored with the strong dev community for it, and what I've seen of similar things for the EVO family and so on. I hope the same for the Vigor/Rezound will be true. But then again, I've seen an overwhelming majority of anyone with a Nexus phone saying how happy they are with theirs.
For one, I'll be getting it just because it's a Nexus device. I enjoy my Incredible and will continue use it as a backup. I've tried all kinds of Roms and I just wanna try something different. I enjoy Sense but the recent versions have just not been fun for me, maybe that's because of Verizon's locking down or something.
It looks nice, but I am going to watch the hype for a bit. It is hard to move on from something as smooth and still as well supported as our INC.
I am going for the Droid Razr, never have and never will own a Samsung phone. Motorola and HTC have proven themselves in the Signal Strength and Quality category for many many years.

not an issue in any of their newer phones either.
I was completely going for the Rezound before I realized that it's still a mystery if it's going to get an unlocked bootloader or not. That's a deciding factor for me.
The Nexus is a great phone, but again another huge letdown is the SD card slot. I use my phone as my iPod so I need the space for my music collection.
I have no problem waiting with my trusty INC until I can see better how these phones will turn out.
Waiting for the quad core phone that is not even coming to verizon is just insanity. It'll be such a long wait, I'll bet you almost anything that the Q1 Q2 date will be pushed back, not to mention that phone is for AT&T, verizon may not see a quad core phone for another year.

That's a pretty big issue for me too, and seeing that motorola pointed the finger at Verizon for the locked bootloader on the Droid Razr, I'm not expecting to see any sort of official bootloader unlocking from HTC (even if they wanted to) for the Rezound. Wouldn't be surprised to see something down the road from revolutionary/unrevoked, but I'd like to be able to buy a phone, turn on USB debugging, plug it into my laptop, do a quick 'fastboot oem unlock' and be done with it (nexus).

I had it, used it, uninstalled it. Streaming over 3G isn't that great in spotty coverage, plus I really dislike the app and how it functions, the UI mostly.
The more I think about it though, the more I think 32GB will be enough. I'm leaning towards the Nexus but still going to wait it out. With the prices they're being sold at I don't want to make a choice that I'll end up regretting.

Coming from the D4

Should I get the M? I have an upgrade in December, and I really love the form factor. My main concern is, I want a phone that will be supported for at least a full year. I like my 4, but I feel like its an afterthought to Motorola as far as design and in software support. I feel like you need to have a highly successful phone (as opposed to the niche market phone the D4 is) to receive support for a respectable amount of time.
The honest truth is I will most likely want a new phone by the end of 2013 as well (I have a real hard time sticking with a phone for a full contract), but is the M a good phone that will get continuous love for 2013? Does the phone seem like it will be able to handle anything 2013 might throw at it (as far as software)?
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2
Development promises from Motorola can be questionable at times, like the ATRIX 4G. All rumors so far hint that this will be supported till the end if 2013. I like the phone, love the performance. Your question is so broad, it really comes down to what you like. If you really like the M, you'll get it. If you played with it, and you're asking for an opinion on whether YOU should be locked into a two year contract, maybe you should continue weighing your options. There is no physical keyboard by the way. ;p
I left the RAZR for the M, and love it. No regrets.

Now that Google bought Moto, they have committed publicly to trying to keep the phones more up to date.
I'd say there's a good chance it will get Android 4.2, but seeing how independent Google is letting M be, Motorola may cut support like they did for their Atrix 4G, Photon, Electrify.
If they cancel it, the first thing they'll do is delay it to 2014Q1. Then they'll cancel it, but give you a "trade in" option for $100.
I'm considering switching to the M from the Droid 3, I have an upgrade coming in March 2013. About the only thing that would change this would be if a Droid 5 came out that was designed like the M with a keyboard, but at this point I'm thinking I could live without a keyboard. I'm hoping under new management that Motorola will have quicker updates, they've already made Motoblur much better and are using on screen buttons giving a more stock appearance. With how quick the JB leak appeared, I imagine 4.2 won't take that long, considering its a such a small update to 4.1. Even if the M never sees 4.2 it wouldn't be that big of a deal since its such a small update.
The M is the only phone in a while that has decent specs and is physically small. I want something small and pocket sized, I have a tablet if I need a big screen. Development for this phone is already starting, Dhacker29 is making ROMs and recovery, while Hashcode is working on safestrap. I really want it now, but I have to wait until March to upgrade. Hopefully I can get it for free w/2yr at that point.
Me and my wife were slated for upgrade July of next year and they let us upgrade early because we kept calling and complaining about our d3s. She got the 4 and I got the m. I like the m way more, its not a perfect phone, but it is really great! I am way slower typing, and do miss the keyboard, but its a good trade off for how nice this phone is. I would trade a 3 for the m in a heartbeat, I would hold on to the 4 a little longer.

Are you in a 4G coverage area. I know some people have been given early upgrades since Verizon wants to switch people over to 4G, but I live in a 3G only area so I don't see why Verizon would allow me an earlier upgrade. I guess its worth a try though. I haven't been using the keyboard much on my D3 because its stopped working well (I have to press hard to get keys to register and then sometimes I'll get double characters). I've been using Swype and have grown to like it. The worst part about the D3 is the fact that its always running low on RAM even with bloatware frozen which makes it lag even though it has a 1ghz dual core.
We are in 4G area, and we complained about the lag, the rebooting and the keyboard not working. What did it though I think was complaining about the indoor cell signal on the D3 (we were trying to get a network extender) and that's when they offered an early upgrade.

Bye all, thanks and good luck.

It's been a month, and having no further evidence that a software exploit for permanent root/unlocked bootloader is near being released, I'm dumping my HTC One. Hate to have to leave HTC, but with carrier restrictions and not having the ability to customize my device without sending it 2000 miles away, I'm not going to sit on this phone and watch it die for 6 months, then be stuck with it.
I've debated back and forth, and refuse to send my device out to get S-off. I don't think many developers are going to be interested enough to buy the device if they don't already have it knowing this is the only option of doing so. But I do thank Sonic for helping a lot of us out.
Thanks for the help most of you have given me, good luck, and hopefully an exploit comes out by Friday morning.

After being a crack flahser for 2 years, I decided that I was spending 6-8 hours per week flashing ROM's. Why, because I could. Other than the few customizations I did, my primary use for an unlocked and rooted phone was to use Google Wallet. Since my new CC offers me an NFC card, I don't even need Wallet. That said, I purchased the One as I wanted a FAST phone without having to tweak it and spend hours unlocking and swapping ROMS.
Point being, the ONE may not be the phone for you if you want to unlock it and customize it further. This is one of those things that you should have been aware of when you purchased it. If knowing there was no exploit availble, and you purchased it with the hopes that there would be, that was your mistake and I agree, you should get rid of it. NEVER purchase a device that has not already been exploited if you like to flash ROMS.

If after the release there is no exploit , I will then send my SEXY Blue BEAST out to Sonic and let him sprinkle some magic on it , and then we will have Tranquil on our Ones.

This. The only things that bother me with sense is the cluttered status bar, the wifi persistent notification, and few other other things.
I just picked up my One last night, having been swayed by the irresistible Best Buy price this week. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt, which was my first Android phone and one on which I had a lot of fun learning to root and ROM. I did that to my heart's content on that phone.
Having said that, I came over to this device because, well, yeah, the price... but also because it's such a massive hardware upgrade over the Tbolt. I moved over to this phone with my eyes wide open. I know there's no exploit at present for the One, and I accept that there may never be one. I'm not crazy about Sense, so one of the first things I did was to run Nova Launcher. Bye bye Blinkfeed, etc. I'll be fine running this phone stock unless and until.
I agree with the general consensus here: don't get a phone you won't be happy with stock.

Congrats on the major hardware upgrade I had the Thunderbolt for a little while, wasn't a big fan, then got the Rezound. Loved the Rezound. But yes, the HTC One is an amazing device, even stock. I also didn't like blinkfeed, so I am, too, using the Nova launcher.
To the OP, thanks for stopping by, good luck with you future devices. I'll hold out for a hopefull exploit after 4.3 is released, and like others have said, if that doesn't turn out, hopefully I can send my phone to Sonic to get s-off.
Should never buy a phone with the expectation that it will be unlocked. Especially in such a short time frame.
I don't think it was necessary to make a post about getting rid of your phone, but to each their own.
I hope you find the phone that works for you. Just don't buy a phone you aren't happy with out of the box. Sounds like you should either buy a nexus phone, a dev edition phone, or wait and buy a phone that the community has already exploited.

I think I agree with most people when I say this, I didn't buy the One for it's root or ROM capabilities I bought it because the phone is awesome. I personally think HTC did a great job with Sense 5, before I used this I was on the Thunderbolt and it was still a good phone I'm glad u went with HTC. The only reason I care for root now is adblock and uninstalling Verizon's apps.

Thank you
Thank you .............................
Still have confidence in XDA Dev's
I can sorta see both sides of this. To me the HTC one is the best phone I have owned BY FAR! S4 was great phone but I like the build, screen, and speaker quality of this one better.
I get the "Don't by the phone if you aren't happy running stock" line of thinking. However, I buy these phones with full confidence that XDA developers will find an exploit within a reasonably short time. Every phone I have owned way back to the Driod X were rootable within a short time. Am I wrong for thinking that?

I'm not going to tell you that you're wrong for thinking anything. You would be wrong, however, in buying a phone with expectations that devs would root the phone and then throw a fit if they don't. If you think they owe you something - I'm not saying you do - or if you think you deserve their efforts on your phone of choice then you would be wrong in that.
The advice to buy a phone you love AS-IS is great advice because if you don't get what you're hoping for, you're still good with your choice.
Is it wrong to hope the devs get you squared away quick? No. Is it wrong to demand it of them? Yes.

Is this phone still worth it?

Hello all. I come over from the Nexus 5 forums, and as much as I love my N5, its definitely starting to show it's age with it's out-dated specs, terrible battery, and inadequate storage (I have the Sprint 16gb model). I was looking at different phones to move on to, and even though money is sorrrrrtttttt of a factor (not really), I've been bouncing around what's available and affordable, since I'm sitting on an upgrade right now. My choices are:
Samsung Galaxy S6 - Best camera, decent starting development scene, non-removeable battery and storage, lackluster battery.
LG G4 - Can get for $100 at Best Buy. Good camera, good screen, good battery, removable everything, no development scene.
Or...
LG G3 - Can get for $1 (Read, ONE DOLLAR) at Best Buy. Good camera, good screen, good battery, removable everything, established development scene.
My biggest concern when it comes to buying a phone is how good the development scene is, or how much potential it has. The LG G3 is already established as a fine phone, its just... The G4 has updated specs on an already high-end phone. Which begs the question, is it worth spending $100 for the top of the line, or better to spend $1 for an extremely capable veteran that can still hang with the best of them?
Halp plz.

if i were you, i would get the gs6, if not, then g4 it is.
i am thinking about getting a g3, but after googling about the phone, i found the it has very bad battery life,
but i am still thinking
This a bit of a tough call... I was in the same situation a few months ago. I ended up going g3.
So far the phone has treated me well (Coming from an original HTC one BTW). I do wish the battery life was a bit better, it really is just average. Though I'm betting it would still last noticeably longer than your Nexus.
The dev community for the g3 is pretty solid, About as established as you could hope for...... on the GSM models.
Keep in mind that the Sprint model of the g3 does not and will not, have nearly as much dev support as the the other models. And this is gonna be the case with any phone you get on sprint unless you go nexus 6 maybe.
If your worried about development primarily then I would ditch sprint and revisit this. Haha
Not super constructive, I know.

That's kind of the one thing I never really understood about the dev scene with these phones; how come its almost always the case that the CDMA variants usually end up getting the shaft with development? Maybe it has something to do with the radios or something, but I never really quite understood it.
I'm also a very impatient person. I will try to hold out for something as long as I can, but then temptation just ends up driving me nuts. With that being said, I AM thinking about holding off for just a little while longer and maybe try going for the Moto X Pure (Is that the US edition?), because even with all these fancy spec upgrades on all these newer phones, I still don't think they can properly run in the grand scheme of things under their own weight, i.e. TouchWiz, LG UI, etc. Stock Android is still the best way to go with all these upgrades, I believe, and that's what I'm gonna try and hold out for. Still waiting on the fabled Nexus 5 2015 release, but that's a whole 'nother story.

I would stick with the nexus line, its a disgrace that an 2 years old flagship has to wait almost a year for a crucial (from security reasons) update. I came from nexus 4 and i regret i left nexus for it.
I had a lot of problems with apps also, for ex. deezer or napster. U just need to be aware that all devs are writing their apps for the nexus in the first place.

LG G4 is the best choice, except for CPU performance which is objectively excellent, but poor relatively to other devices like the cited SGS6.
I think you're not an "AnTuTu maniac", so buy it without any remorse, you'll have a 64-bit terminal with both removable battery and expandable storage [emoji106]
If you want a recent and expensive terminal, be aware of G3, as it's no longer a top of the range and it's based on the 32-bit CPU architecture.

Ya I've been around xda for quite a while and I've noticed the same thing with CDMA phones... The best answer I have is that generally they are harder to dev for because of their firmware, they tend to be more locked down, and not as many devs purchase those devices.
That's a smart move in my opinion... The new moto x, Sony z5, and nexus are all gonna be out in the next couple of months. You might really be kicking yourself in the a** if you don't wait and see haha.
I personally think Sony phones are very underrated I'd have a z3 right now if Sony would stop screwing around and get their devices back on more US carriers. I think the z5 is gonna be nice.

It's still the best phone I've ever owned so far.
If you are going for 2 years contract, definitely get something else like gs6 or g4. If you are thinking about a cheap prepaid plan, buy g3, s5, or m8 - phone only.
That's right. Don't get a G3 on a contract. In fact don't buy any phone on a contract. It most certainly does not cost $1. You will pay many many hundreds of dollars over 2 years. My advice is to buy the Moto x pure for $399.
