if you turn off the tab and then plug it in, does the battery screen come on and does the device charge?

My guess - faulty resistors in the charger or one of the wires in the cable is dead.
The Tab expects to see USB D+ and D- shorted together and floating at 1.2 volts, set by a resistor divider in the charger.
Does the cable work fine for USB data transfer?
I think the user has possibly used the wrong wording. If he's seeing the MTP mode come on that means that he's just got it plugged into a USB port on a machine whilst the tablet is on (whilst using the "charger" cable).
Simple answer if that's the case. The tab doesn't charge that way as there isn't enough power coming through the port to keep the tab on and charge. If you however switch off the tab, you should find it charges from the USB port
If not, let us know.
Actually the tab is going into MTP mode while plugged into the outlet, using the supplied Samsung power adapter and supplied 30 pin cable.
I think i need to call Samsung for replacement... although after really thinking about what I just typed I think might be simpler to just buy a new cable online.
Or is it the actual power adapter that's faulty....
Well that is quite odd then. Does the tab charge if you switch it off and then plug it into the outlet / pc?

No, his wording was explicit enough to indicate that the tab is falsely detecting the factory charger as a USB host. This will happen with iPad/iPod/iPhone chargers, and would happen with the factory charger if the cable were faulty (D+ or D- open) or if the charger were faulty.
Again, to the OP: Does the cable work for syncing to a PC to transfer data? If it doesn't work at all, that's a sign that D+ or D- of the cable is open.
Meh, some people use words such as charger and cable interchangeably in terms of their truer intended meanings at times.
I was simply trying to cover that base.
Not sure if the cable works for data ....as I do everything over the air. The cable was giving me troubles at the tab end, (loose connection) but lately has been working OK.
I also haven't been charging and using at the same time lately either. I really needto contact Samsung and talk to them about a warranty replacement, but I have a feeling I'd be better off just buying a new one off Amazon or the like....

I have the same issue. Check that with different cables. So cable and charger is not the reason
If you're running a ROM with Pershoot's kernel, you can "Enable Charge From ANY USB" (see link in my signature). If you're running something else, you can make yourself a "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" that will trick the Tab into charging off anything (again, see the link in my signature).
But before you go out spending money (even if it's just a little bit of $$$) you should see if the cable works for data transfer between your computer and the tab.
If the cable works, then the "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" will keep you going until Samsung sends you a replacement charger.
I had this problem and didn't know what was wrong for a while. It turned out the the charger wasn't plugged in all the way in the outlet. I guess it wasn't getting all the juice it needed.
Am suddenly getting this problem tonight also it sometimes turns my tablet off but won't let me turn it on till I pull the charger out.I've also noticed that if I plug it in when the tab is off the battery sometimes comes up saying it's charging
just plugged the usb lead in to 2 laptops and they both show a usb error
I started having the same problem 2 days ago. All of a sudden i plugged in the wall charger and it went into MTP mode. It will charge if turned off but I've noticed it takes a much longer time to charge. From 3% it took almost 24 hrs to completly charge. Thinking that I'll have to buy a new wall charger.
Please help
Another one about charging...
My 10.1 P7510 takes tooooo long to charge, even beeing off. If I connect it to my notebook data transfer is correct but battery keeps draining, or at least not charging. If I turn it off (either connected to PC or charger) the charging icon appears correctly. I must say that cable (and charger) are not the original ones
Is it a problem of the Tab, or cable, and/or charger ?
I think the charger did not have enough current to charge the tab while still using it. The stock charger should be rated at 5V 2A. I tried another charger with only 1A and it still worked. Anything lower than 1A will end up showing that MTP mode.

I've got the same problem myself except I had to clean the charger clean of marinade sauce (it's a long story, don't ask!) and I took the device back to my local Vodafone store (I got it on a Mobile Broadband contract) as I thought it was faulty. They claimed the device was working fine although they used their own cable and not mine. They also claimed that if it was the cable, I should be easily able to buy one.
I tried buying one in every store I could think of, including the phone repair shops and they didn't sell them at all!
It's just a shame that a tablet like this which could have been a great tablet is crippled not only with no MicroSD slot, but also using a crappy proprietary socket whereas all the other Tabs have a MicroSD slot/uses a Micro USB port.
(I've already ordered a replacement cable from Amazon UK in any case for a reasonable price)
mtp-connected and media scanner running
I bought. My Tab 8.9 last November, only started having this problem since last night. There is red cross and mtp-connected,also,"media scanner running". I am using original cable and adapter that come with the Tab. Has anyone here found a solution?
The first day I got my E4GT I tried connecting my phone to a computer with the stock HTC USB cable from my old Evo to charge since there was no wall outlet around and the stock cord was in a box in another room. I found that the HTC charger did not charge my phone when plugged into the computer. I tried the same thing recently with an LG USB cable with the same results. The only cable that seems to work is the one that came with my device. Is this supposed to happen, or is my device just messed up?

The LG cable I used was from my mom's Optimus S. It did not show any signs of damage at all. When I plugged it in, the notification light turned on like normal when charging, but actually discharged as if there was no charger plugged in instead of charging.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
It could be that the older cables have worn data pins and don't allow the phone to negotiate charging power with the PC. If that is the case your phone could be using more than the 500ma supplied by usb and draining what's left in the battery.

That's how it is with me. The weird thing is, the OEM LG cable will charge both my mom and sister's Optimus S's via PC, plus my old Evo 4G will charge when plugged into a PC with that cable too. It's just my E4GT that won't.

I was wondering if anyone has bought a longer USB cable, the one that came with the AT&T Ion is too short and the phone has to be on the floor while charging.
A cable might seem like something so basic that any cable with the right connectors should work, but apparently not. The Kindle has the same type of port and the Ion and yet the Kindle cable doesn't charge the ion (when used with the Ion power adapter, of course). So if you've found a long USB cable that works, please post it here.
I think I saw one in a Japanese store the other day that was circum $5 for a 6 ft cable, and I'm gonna go buy it tomorrow. I'll report back if it works or not.

Used Ion Power plug - 6' HTC Micro USB cable worked well.
I had a longer cable from my Xperia X10, so fortunately that worked out for me. I have succesfully used Blackberry, Samsung, and generic cables though. You can get a Sony Ericsson cable for about $6 on Amazon too.

I don't think any cable will work. Just to be sure, I tried the Kindle cable with the Ion adapter again, and it also didn't work. That cable connects to the computer fine, and the charge seemed stable, but when used with the wall plug it wasn't charging steadily although the LED light on the phone was on all the time.

The problem with some micro-usb cable like the one I bought from Wal-Mart is that they do not have an extra line that allows for data connections to computers and that extra power is what keeps the phone charging stable.

Most micro-usb cables will work but some cables are only meant for charging and wont connect to a computer.
I use this 6' cable from AmazonBasics
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...r=1-1-catcorr&keywords=micro+usb+amazonbasics
Works great for data or charge. I travel with it VERY frequently and I abuse it. Used it for just under a year with my x10 and the phone-end started getting loose. Amazon replaced it free and my new one has been going strong for almost a year. I'm honestly surprised they last as long as they do the abuse I put them through

I got a mediabridge 6 ft cable from Amazon, it wasn't as cheap as some of the others posted here (I ordered before that post). Tried it during the weekend and it worked perfectly, so something must be missing from the Kindle cable.
I just recently went to Kyoto, and accidentally left my charger in the hotel (usual pretty careful, but eh). So I just went to the nearest tech shop and bought a nice 1.5 meter cable, and it's so much nicer. Kinda makes me glad I left the damn charger.

Any micro usb will work now the only difference is that the ones that say "file transfer" are for transfer and charging, the ones for "charging" are for charging only i made the mistake of trying to get the one from my truck to transfer data.. didnt happen lol had to wait till i got to my house and use the right cable. may be my luck, would like to see if there is a true difference
Just got it this week. $3
Check this out on AMZN:
Samsung OEM Micro USB Data Charging Cable (5 ft/1.5m)

Also, anybody know if the ION will support an OTG cable?
from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Its been touched on, but just in case. The Ion uses a micro USB connection, that is the socket on the phone itself. There are lots of connections that look like micro USB, but aren't...obviously those won't work, as they don't fit. So when buying a longer cable, make sure its Micro USB (not Mini USB, by they way...that too is different)
Also, as mentioned, some older cables..especially those that came with some older cell phones, would be power only...no data transfer ability (AT&T loved including these with older Samsung phones, as they wanted you to buy a $30 data cable before leaving the store). They'll charge the phone from a wall or a computer, but with hit or miss results..some will confuse the phone, as it doesn't know what type of connection it has, others will charge very slow, etc. there is no reason anymore to buy a power only cable, especially considering all these cables are cheap. I lucked out, my logitech mouse came with a 6 foot micro USB data cable for adjusting its button configuration and charging...so i just use that with the wall mount, works great.
I ordered a bunch of USB extension cables from eBay, my cable is like 14 feet long now lol they are cheap

My phone won't turn on. I own a samsung galaxy nexus (verizon). I've had it for 16 months. I was talking on my phone then ended the call. Had it charging to the wall. Set my alarm for the morning. When I woke up my phone was off. I tried to turn it on. No luck. I did the 10 second volume down plus power button. Still nothing. I pulled the battery and did the wall charger no luck. I plugged it into my computer with the usb. It doesn't register it. The phone has no lights on it. The screen doesn't light up notifying me of it charging. The little flasher light on the bottom doesn't light up. Please help I'm out of options. I called verizon and they said i'm off warranty. I have no other options that I know of besides to get a new phone. I love my phone. I unlocked and rooted it. I have everything on it. I need to get it back on. Any and every idea will be tried. Thank you!!!!

Question: Did you use the same USB cable from the wall charger to the computer?
Could be a couple of things...if the answer is YES, I would change USB cables and see if that fixes it.
If the answer is NO, you could try to clean out the microUSB port. It's possible that some dust got into it, causing a small shunt or keeping the pins from connecting. I know my previous Galaxy Nexus had this issue...found out I had a piece of lint that somehow got into the MicroUSB port and kept the USB plug from seating correctly.

If you have exhausted all possible means then the last resort for you is to try the USB jig. Usually it can wake the device up and put it to ODIN mode. If that fails too, then its a possible major hardware failure.

Question , when you connect the charger, does it light up the battery symbol ?
Have u tryed to "center "the phone usb port with a needle or something like that ??
if not plz try this :
1) turn the phone off and take the battery out
2) take a toothpick, knife , pin or whatever will fit into the micro USB slot of the galaxy nexus.
3) VERY VERY slowly make it so that the little shelf like connector is in the middle.
4) connect ur phone and hope it gets back to life

I noticed this as well. hopefully if something gets broken its more likely to be the connector on the cable than the charging port. I have tried a few other cables as well and all are pretty difficult to insert.
Well the way I see it would you rather have it flop around and be loose, or have a night tight fit?
On a more serious note I had the same issue when I first recieved my F400S. After a week or so it got better, you can always try an older micro usb cable thats more broken in to avoid this issue.
when i first got the phone it was like what you've desribed. but after a while, it wasn't an issue anymore, i guess its a good sign that the phone is brand spanking new.

Hi,
I tilt the usb-connector up (just a bit) while plugging it in.
Greetz
It requires a downward angle tilting towards the device to insert.
Same for me, but once you're using qi charging and Wi-Fi file transfer, you'll hardly ever use the port.

Tilting the cable to plug in seems to be the norm on pretty much every G3. I doubt exchanging it will help.
Once you've done it for a while, it should become pretty easy to do.
Tilting the cable and just dealing with it are fine, but what happens when you stay finding usb cables that don't want to charge your G3 properly? I have one (very nice) 10ft cable and my phone plays a game of connecting and disconnecting while trying to charge with this cord. This courts does not give me the same problems on other devices. However the G3 charges just fine on all my other cables. Not using this cable is an obvious answer but i worry that the problem could get worse and what if I start having problems with other chargers?
For now, the solution is to tilt the cord slightly downward (or upward, depending on your perspective) as the port is just sliiiiightly more flush with the opening. My advice is to get used to doing this. A broken charger port is really a PITA, so taking an extra 2 seconds to plug it in is the prudent choice. My dad gave me a lot of good advice when I was growing up, and one of the gems turns out to be "don't force things."
As mentioned, once we get some wireless charging back covers on a more accessible basis, we'll all just use wireless charging and never plug in again. Except in the car.
The cable from my old GS4 plugs in very very easily. I haven't tried charging with it tho. I use it mainly for usb mtp.
Posted from my LG-D850
Difficult at first. It did get better for me though. I too thought i had damaged it or that it had shipped that way. And I also thought I was just breaking it more each time I charged and contemplated exchanging LOL. Make sure cord is facing the right way first (im still trying to put it in upside down sometimes), then you do have to tilt it down a bit to get in initially and then it tilts slightly up before fully inserting. It was very diificult to do the first couple days. Day 5 and its way easy. Hope this has helped and put your mind at ease This is my first Android phone and i'm luvin it!
the past new phones i had. was always hard at first to plug it in.
just gotta lube it up
Any new updates on this? I guess tilting the cable a bit is working, but will it ever get to the point it will go straight in? It really appears that this is not a defect but a LG design for the port.
