if you turn off the tab and then plug it in, does the battery screen come on and does the device charge?

My guess - faulty resistors in the charger or one of the wires in the cable is dead.
The Tab expects to see USB D+ and D- shorted together and floating at 1.2 volts, set by a resistor divider in the charger.
Does the cable work fine for USB data transfer?
I think the user has possibly used the wrong wording. If he's seeing the MTP mode come on that means that he's just got it plugged into a USB port on a machine whilst the tablet is on (whilst using the "charger" cable).
Simple answer if that's the case. The tab doesn't charge that way as there isn't enough power coming through the port to keep the tab on and charge. If you however switch off the tab, you should find it charges from the USB port
If not, let us know.
Actually the tab is going into MTP mode while plugged into the outlet, using the supplied Samsung power adapter and supplied 30 pin cable.
I think i need to call Samsung for replacement... although after really thinking about what I just typed I think might be simpler to just buy a new cable online.
Or is it the actual power adapter that's faulty....
Well that is quite odd then. Does the tab charge if you switch it off and then plug it into the outlet / pc?

No, his wording was explicit enough to indicate that the tab is falsely detecting the factory charger as a USB host. This will happen with iPad/iPod/iPhone chargers, and would happen with the factory charger if the cable were faulty (D+ or D- open) or if the charger were faulty.
Again, to the OP: Does the cable work for syncing to a PC to transfer data? If it doesn't work at all, that's a sign that D+ or D- of the cable is open.
Meh, some people use words such as charger and cable interchangeably in terms of their truer intended meanings at times.
I was simply trying to cover that base.
Not sure if the cable works for data ....as I do everything over the air. The cable was giving me troubles at the tab end, (loose connection) but lately has been working OK.
I also haven't been charging and using at the same time lately either. I really needto contact Samsung and talk to them about a warranty replacement, but I have a feeling I'd be better off just buying a new one off Amazon or the like....

I have the same issue. Check that with different cables. So cable and charger is not the reason
If you're running a ROM with Pershoot's kernel, you can "Enable Charge From ANY USB" (see link in my signature). If you're running something else, you can make yourself a "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" that will trick the Tab into charging off anything (again, see the link in my signature).
But before you go out spending money (even if it's just a little bit of $$$) you should see if the cable works for data transfer between your computer and the tab.
If the cable works, then the "DIY Universal Charging Inline Cable" will keep you going until Samsung sends you a replacement charger.
I had this problem and didn't know what was wrong for a while. It turned out the the charger wasn't plugged in all the way in the outlet. I guess it wasn't getting all the juice it needed.
Am suddenly getting this problem tonight also it sometimes turns my tablet off but won't let me turn it on till I pull the charger out.I've also noticed that if I plug it in when the tab is off the battery sometimes comes up saying it's charging
just plugged the usb lead in to 2 laptops and they both show a usb error
I started having the same problem 2 days ago. All of a sudden i plugged in the wall charger and it went into MTP mode. It will charge if turned off but I've noticed it takes a much longer time to charge. From 3% it took almost 24 hrs to completly charge. Thinking that I'll have to buy a new wall charger.
Please help
Another one about charging...
My 10.1 P7510 takes tooooo long to charge, even beeing off. If I connect it to my notebook data transfer is correct but battery keeps draining, or at least not charging. If I turn it off (either connected to PC or charger) the charging icon appears correctly. I must say that cable (and charger) are not the original ones
Is it a problem of the Tab, or cable, and/or charger ?
I think the charger did not have enough current to charge the tab while still using it. The stock charger should be rated at 5V 2A. I tried another charger with only 1A and it still worked. Anything lower than 1A will end up showing that MTP mode.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I've got the same problem myself except I had to clean the charger clean of marinade sauce (it's a long story, don't ask!) and I took the device back to my local Vodafone store (I got it on a Mobile Broadband contract) as I thought it was faulty. They claimed the device was working fine although they used their own cable and not mine. They also claimed that if it was the cable, I should be easily able to buy one.
I tried buying one in every store I could think of, including the phone repair shops and they didn't sell them at all!
It's just a shame that a tablet like this which could have been a great tablet is crippled not only with no MicroSD slot, but also using a crappy proprietary socket whereas all the other Tabs have a MicroSD slot/uses a Micro USB port.
(I've already ordered a replacement cable from Amazon UK in any case for a reasonable price)
mtp-connected and media scanner running
I bought. My Tab 8.9 last November, only started having this problem since last night. There is red cross and mtp-connected,also,"media scanner running". I am using original cable and adapter that come with the Tab. Has anyone here found a solution?

I would like a longer cable that will also allow charging from computer USB, car charger USB port, etc...
Basically I don't want to be limited to having to have that brick of a Samsung wall charger with me, and of course the longer cable.
Can anyone recommend one? I've looked on Amazon but all the descriptions just aren't clear enough...
Unfortunately I have been reading that the "bulky" charger is the only one that will charge the tab properly. My suggestion would be to buy a USB extension cable to solve ur short cable issue.

I leave my tab plugged in overnight to my pc using the supplied samsung usb data cable. It charges at a slower rate but is typically charging about 70% over a 9 hour period.
I also have an USB3.0 2.0m extension cable (tried an ASUS transformer for a week), which allows charging and data transfer ok

That will allow the Tab to charge from any 2A charger (most common would be iPad chargers).
The tab will go into USB charging mode (e.g. charging disabled) with iPad chargers unless you use the cable above or modify the charger.
I haven't had time to investigate, but it MIGHT be possible to allow charging from unmodified iPad chargers with a kernel modifications. Not sure - it depends on whether we have separate ADCs for USB D+ and D- or not.
this will work, you could also buy the cable without the charger.

Tab, not Tab 10.1 - The original 7" Tab will charge from a PC, the 10.1 will not.
The cable will work with the Tab 10.1 just like the 10.1's stock sync cable - which means it will transfer data but not charge when connected to a PC.
Guys, I keep reading in this thread that the tab 10.1 can't be charged via a PC, well I'm here to tell you it can and does. Every night I leave mine connected to my PC, and in the morning it's charged! Admittedly it's a slower charge rate (seems to be around 6 or 7% per hour), but it charges never the less. I use the samsung supplied cable and nothing else.
Of course, it won't charge if the tab is in use via a PC USB port...
My new Nexus and it's charger have had a falling out:
My charger won't charge my phone, but charges other people's phones. And other people's chargers charge my phone!!?
What's really weird is that my charger charges my phone when it's switched off but I've done a data wipe and it still won't work once the phone is powered on, so my question is:
What the motherf*ck?
Anyone seen this before?
I rooted, clockworked and installed paul obrien's customised ROM with the volume fix and extra menu and search buttons. And my phone was fine. I've got other chargers knocking around, although they're not the same. Should I be worried?

What charger are you using to try and charge your Nexus? Mains or usb? I only got a usb cable in my box and they are pretty much just standard micro usb cables. You should also be able to use any 5V mains to usb converter which you plug the usb cable into to charge your device so as long as you can find some combination that works then I wouldnt worry too much about it.
However if you are concerned then send the phone back for a replacement while you are able to.
Mark.
You'd think the first place you'd go to would be Google or Samsung. Why wouldn't you give them a call first?
I have found that some of the lower power (1 amp or less) chargers are having trouble with the larger phones with bigger batteries. Interestingly, my old SGS2 desktop cradle/charger wouldn't charge the SGN (which fits into the charger - sticks out a bit but the phone sits on the mini-USB fine) with the charger that came with the desktop cradle. I replaced it with the higher powered (10W?) usb charger that came with my ipad2 and, lo & behold, the phone will charge.
Not sure if this helps or not but I've discovered that not all chargers are created equal.
Yea, some of the higher powered phones/tablets won't charge over the lower power chargers... hence why tablets won't charge over a PC-USB connection.
Sounds like the charger is faulty... unless nothing charges the phone.

Sorry, if I wasn't clear (and for spamming the forum?) but I got a UK SGN via phones4u on o2 and I received in the box a USB cable and an AC wall charger with a USB socket on it.
I don't think you guys are getting how weird this is:
If I connect my Nexus to a PC with the USB cable that came with it, it doesn't charge.
If I connect the USB to the supplied AC wall adapter and plug it into my phone it doesn't charge.
If I connect anyone else's smartphone phone to my Nexus charger, be it just USB cable or with AC it charges.
And if I connect anyone else's USB cable and/or charger to my phone it charges!?
My phone will charge from the supplied kit only when it is powered off, hence a software issue and not a hardware issue which is why I didn't call Samsung.
I've done a factory reset, I've restored to backups made prior to the issue occurring. I haven't admittedly done the full unroot and stock restore as yet and would rather not. I just wondered if anyone else here had experienced weirdness with the supplied charger?
Many thanks guys, sorry for the sarcasm earlier, it's just that I'm not lazy, I read and read up on things before posting questions. And I've posted very few questions on XDA since I registered here after buying my Milestone. I'm only posting in the general discussion thread so didn't think it'd be a big deal if I bumped this. The reason I did is I only have a limited time before I no longer qualify for a hardware replacement from the supplier if I claim it faulty. (which I kinda don't think it is)

Bumping this thread since I'm having almost the exact same problem and found this thread after searching. How did you solve it?
My situation is like this:
If I connect my Nexus to a PC with the USB cable that came with it, it does charge.
My phone will not charge from the supplied kit when it is powered off.
Feels very wierd, the other two chargers I have tried were a 700mA ZTE Blade charger and a 2A Asus Transformer charger, both are charging my Nexus perfectly fine.
Is it me or does this thing not charge while in use? I'm using the a/c adapter btw
It works for me when hooked up to my laptop. It goes slower depending on how many resources are being used. My G1 wouldn't charge while navigation was on for instance and my Nexus S barely charged at all while I was navigating.

All I'm doing it texting and surfing. I' trying to charge it before I board my 8 hour flight to Europe. I have two movies on here I want to watch and the charge has only gone down since I plugged it in. It just slows down the rate. I'm starting to think my Galaxy Nexus is a dud. I barely get 9 hours with light use. My brightness is always below halfway.
I guess I'm alone on this issue, or nonissue I should say
With the AC adapter that doesn't happen to me but with the car adapter I can't figure out a way for it to charge instead of lose battery while using Navigation and Bluetooth. All car chargers are detected as USB and I have tried several adapters... (purchased and returned 3 different adapters including Samsung one and have 3 other adapters myself)

Make sure the car charger you're using is at least a 1AMP charger. Anything less than that and the phone will use a USB charging mode. You can see the ampage of a particular charger on the bottom/backside. Its usually in very small print but its there.
BTW the Galaxy Nexus can actually run off wall paper alone(i.e. no battery inserted) on a 2.1AMP charger that comes with most tablets these days. I use my Galaxy Tab charger for it!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
as unremarked said, you need a 1AMP car charger to get it to work. i had to buy a new one.
As far as the AC charger, the one that the phone came with i had issues charging, but i went back to a black berry charger i bought as a replacement for my nexus one, and i can be playing cordy on that and the battery stays charged.
I have a verizon charger leftover from my Droid 1 and I drove across the country a few days ago using navigation 100% of the trip. I also had a few hours of conversation and regularly streamed podcasts and music. I did all of this with the extended battery at a full charge always. The charger was never even noticeably warm. The trip took 3 days and I didn't charge over night so each day started below a full charge.
I suspect you have a problem with one of three things. Either the phone has a bad charging component, your battery is defective or your charger has less output than it claims.

Its the one that came with the phone, 1A 500V, pretty standard these days.
A few comments:
All USB cables are not alike. Not all transmit the proper power. So with your AC adapter, you might try other USB cables to have the phone see it as "AC" and not "USB".
The Verizon car charger does work properly with the Galaxy Nexus, and is seen as "AC" power. Interestingly, if you use the 2nd USB port, even with a cable that does function correctly, it is still seen as "USB" and not "AC". So only the primary connection there will provide full power.
I'm also still looking for a car charger, other than Verizon's, that will be seen as "AC" - I'd get the Verizon one, but don't like the "curly" cord, since I'm duct taping it across my dash, and it's a lot more bulky than a regular straight cord.

If it takes 2100ma to keep it on it would never ever charge on any charger.
Also, considering the fact the battery is only 1750mah that mean the device would only stay on for around 45 minutes before being fully discharged if it wasn't plugged in.
Somehow your figures are a bit off.

How does a USB cable "not transmit the proper power?" What is "proper power" as opposed to "improper power?" Power goes through the RED wire in the USB cable. That's a USB spec. Either it carries current or it does not.
Some devices need to see 2 USB pins to be jumpered in order to set charge on (the Galaxy Tablet is notorious for this which is why you can buy a special cable adapter to create this jumpered charger pin if you are not using their "special" charger. This adapter allows you to to be able to charge the tablet off USB which it normally won't do, faking the tablet to make it think it's on the AC charger, albeit very slow).

What I meant is that using the official Verizon car charger, I connected my Galaxy Nexus with the built-in micro USB connector, and my phone showed it to be charging, and the source recognized as "AC". I then tried connecting it using a couple of different cables, using the secondary USB slot on the Verizon charger:
When I used the cable from my wife's LG Env Touch, my Galaxy Nexus didn't show it as charging at all. It apparently wasn't receiving enough to even be recognized as "USB" charging.
When I used the cable that came with my Galaxy Nexus, plugged into the same USB port on the Verizon charger, my phone showed it being charged, but with the source shown as "USB".
So the type of cable will impact whether or not a given adapter will even charge the phone. And the charger itself also has an impact.
To get the phone to charge, and the source recognized as "AC" you are going to need the right charger and cable. As I said, the Verizon charger, using the built-in cable, works fine.
When the phone is off and plugged into the wall, it charges. When the phone is on, and I plug it into the wall or computer, the phone doesn't know it's plugged in.
I ordered a brand new usb charging flex jack and replaced the old one, still the same problem. What gives?
EDIT: I am stock. Not rooted.
Does this happen on the original cable also?
Have you tried wiping?
Is Fast Charge on?
Fk. It doesn't even charge from the wall! When the phone is off, it has the animation that says it's charging when i plug it in the wall. I left it plugged into the wall overnight. This morning I took a look at the phone, and it didn't charge!
Oh noez, what should i do?
Also, I don't have the original cable. I'm using an HTC one.
EDIT: Dafuq?! I found an LG charger. Apparently the phone knows that it's charging when I charge with that. The thing is, that charger is just a charger; it's not a usb cable+ an adaptor. So I can't use it for adb and such.

You should mention what ROM you're on (and version) so that no one else makes the same mistake I did in assuming you had a custom ROM and that Fast Charge is on. It's a feature that makes sure that whatever charges it is recognised as AC 1amp charger as some chargers aren't designed well enough (I believe it involves a single solder point) to report themselves as capable of 1A. If it doesn't report as AC to Android, it will charge at 500mA instead (it assumes USB power). It sometimes causes problems with connecting to PC via USB.
Get another USB cable, this time none of that fancy **** go straight to OE Samsung or something.

Also, I'm stock. I am not even rooted.
My nexus just started acting stupid when I plug it in also.
Mine sat in a drawer for a few weeks and when I plugged it in to charge, it wouldn't.
What I did was this.
plug device into charger
remove battery for a few seconds
replace battery
press power button
phone powered up and began charging.
Even now, it still sometimes doesn't recognize the charger and I have to unplug and plug it in until it does.
I use a rocketfish cable.

Thank you dmappdev,
I followed your procedure (feel like talking about surgery here, which isn't too far from topic); I'm convinced that it helped in some way, directly or indirectly... as at first, my Galaxy S Advance still wouldn't recognize/charge my phone with:
1. its own charger,
2. my old Galaxy Ace's charger,
3. a universal wall usb plug used with the S Advanced own USB-to-USBmini cable.
My last idea was to use, quote: an old Nokia USB cable connected to my PC... and that worked.
I was much too happy my phone had remembered how to charge to stay mad... But I still tried those three means for charging again, and only the phone's original charger worked now. So the phone's charging ability has been "awakened" in some way, but only for the original charger ...technology is improving, but not the ethics on making life easier for the consumer.
All this was yesterday. This morning (there's more, yes), I saw my phone indicating a 100% charge although it had been disconnected from charge for several hours - something that had already happened once yesterday, before the unable-to-charge situation; a simple reboot took care of the problem, the battery status now showing a more realistic 53%.
Any comments to any of the above? If not, thanks again for your tip anyway !!!
So this is an update to a previous issue I had...
When I first got this phone, the included USB3.0 charger charged much faster than a standard microUSB charger. But then it stopped charging fast. It pretty much stopped charging at all really. Like maybe 1% battery added in like 20 minutes.
So I sent it into Samsung and they returned it saying they couldn't replace it because the wall adapter part was actually from a Note 2 which doesn't support the 3.0 wire (even though it was absolutely the one that came in the box). Once I got it back, I found a brand new set of the same wire and adapter (it was covered with the packing plastic wrap and all that stuff which is what makes me think it was actually a replacement). I plugged in my phone and it charged quick again for about a day. Then it went back to charging slow again.
I still need to get down to T-Mobile to see if they'll exchange the wall adapter which supposedly doesn't work with the USB3.0 cable even though both times it worked at first. It's their mistake but I have a hard time believing they'll own up to it... The model on the adapter by the way is EP-TA10JWE with an output of 5.3V 2.0A.
Assuming they don't exchange it... What do you guys think are my options here? I ordered a 3rd party USB3.0 cable from Amazon and that does the same super slow charging as this (and it didn't come with a different wall adapter anyway so it was kind of a stupid purchase on my part). I tried plugging the cable into a computer with USB3.0 and it didn't make a difference. Is there a different wall adapter that is known to work with the fast charging on this phone that I can buy? Is it AT ALL possible that the connector on my phone is the problem and I need a new phone? That would be terrible, but if it's something I need to do I will. It charges just fine and the same speed as any other phone when I use a microUSB cord and adapter like the one that came with my old S3.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
That's weird brother. I checked my charger and i have the same model number and mine charges extremely fast. Maybe it's a problem with the device it's self.

no not rooted (i was thinking about it and then this whole thing started)
I've noticed the same thing with mine ..and definently trickling on USB 2 .. I thought USB 3 was suppose to be all the hype about how it would do when u turn fast charge on in a rooted phone with custom kernel.. The charging is slower than my note 2 on USB 2..

its so weird that it DID charge faster for that first couple days (and again after I got the new one)... And I have 2 friends with Note 3's that say they charge faster than their previous phones (one of them had a Note 2).
I just don't know what to do...
The enhanced speed with USB 3.0 is for data transfer, not charging. Using a USB 2.0 or 3.0 will charge your phone at the same speed.

Well first of all, every review says it charges faster with the included 3.0 charger... So I don't see how you could be right about that... Not trying to argue, it's just that was one of the features that everyone talked about... And second of all, the 3.0 charger that came with it barely charges at all anyway anymore, so even if that was true, either the cable, adapter, or phone still has a problem... Phone charges fine, maybe 3 hours for 100% charge with a microUSB cable... About 1% in 10 minutes (that's as long as I can bring myself to bother testing the 3.0 charger for). And that's if the screens off. If the screen is on it actually just won't charge at all, it's like it drains quicker than it's charging with the screen on with that 3.0 cable... Again I say "cable" but it could be the cable or the adapter or the phone that's the problem... I'd love to find a way to figure out which it is...
For some reason the 3.0 charger charged lightening fast today ... Maybe the jedi ROM had to settle in for a few days maybe?
