evo 4G HELP NEEDED.??? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello to all
i just got a htc evo 4G hboot=2.160001 radio=2.15.00.0808 and hardwared=0004
there is out dated info out there.don't want to brick phone . can somebody please point me in the right direction as to what file to use to root this phone and what recovery to use along with the right supper user file. and what GB rom is recommended. thanks a million.

Use http://revolutionary.io to root your phone and gain s-off. ClockworkMod recovery is installed by default when you run Revolutionary. You're better off installing a Amon Ra based recovery. Personally, when I had my OG EVO, I preferred to use Smelkus, which is Amon Ra based. As far as ROM's, well, that's pretty subjective. What works for one user may not work for another. Just keep in mind that Gingerbread ROM's are the most functional, as ICS and JB ROM's don't have working 4G or front-facing cameras.

Thanks iI downloaded that file I install the drivers but when I click on it it just sits there saying trying to find phone must be missing something
I have USB and unknown check off and hotboot on.??? Once again thanks for the respond

Make sure that USB Debugging is on, and Fastboot is turned off. Make sure you don't have HTC Sync installed on your PC-if you do, remove it. Also, make sure any anti-virus software on your PC is turned off. Make sure your phone is booted up (not in bootloader) and set to 'charge only'.

How do I flash recovery with S-Off?

So I had to take my phone to Sprint. They flashed the original RRU back onto it.
I still have S-off though. So in order to root my phone again, do I need to go through the unrevoked method? Or is there a way I can just somehow flash clockworkmod recovery (through Hboot?), and then I'd be good to flash new ROMs from there?
Thanks.
adb amon ra
Search the forums, I remember reading about this specific issue, I believe you need to just push a custom recovery onto your phone and flash a rooted rom. Are you experienced with adb? Or I'm guessing you unrevoked 3'd your evo. Load amon ra and push that recovery back on.
if you're s-off try place on the root and flash this, then you should be good, you can flash a new rom.

I did try the search. No luck. Not good with adb but if I just have to put an image into my root directory and then flash it in hboot I can do that. I would just need the image

Well I have 6 phones on my account with them, so they didn't say anything.
They know to either fix my phone or lose 6 monthly contracts.

I can't see where you're referring to on the unrevoked website. I've been to both www.unrevoked.com & www.unrevoked.com/#evo and even www.unrevoked.com/recovery and the only options I have is to actually go through the entire "Painless root & reflash" process. I was hoping to just download only the clockworkmod PC36IMG image.

Older EVO 4G HBOOT 2.10.0001

This phone was rooted already, then today I returned it to stock since the cyanogen7 that was on there did not... somehow... have the menu option to "update profile" I needed to change my phone number. I wanted to re-root, but I'm having trouble where to begin.
In the Power+Vol Down boot screen, it shows S-OFF, and HBOOT 2.10.0001
I cant make Revolutionary work because 2.15 is the lowest HBOOT it accepts.
If I choose the "recovery" option in that list, I get a black screen with a red triangle/exclamation point icon over an icon of the phone. I have to take the battery out to get the phone back on.
The phone does work, btw. But I miss the stuff I get when it's rooted. Anyway... what do I do now? How do I get the recovery/cyanogen7 on there if I cant get superuser permissions?
I used some other method back when I rooted this phone, but I haven't seen anything yet to spark my memory of the steps.
U are already s-off. No need for revolutionary. Go to dev thread and look for amon_ra recovery. Download it and follow directions to flash it. Then download whatever rom u want and flash that. The red triangle just means you have no recovery.
Support TrevE !!
I thought Revolutionary was how I got the custom recovery on the phone, which I need before I can root? I;d like to put CWM on there, since I have a paid version of Rom Manager already, and I believe they work together well.

If that's your hboot then you rooted with unrevoked and don't use rom manager and clockworkmod everyone here will tell you it leads to problems

So if my HBOOT is 2.10, it means I originally rooted with "unrevoked", and there may be problem with that and the Rom Manager/ CWD setup?

You did originally root with unrevoked. Sometimes it doesn't flash the recovery [known fact] in which you do as Paranoia said above, as to download, flash, and install a recovery.

All you need is to flash a custom recovery in the bootloader and you will be set and yes everyone will recommend amon RA (supersonic RA) over clockworkmod recovery

Okay, I did the Bootloader/PC36IMG.zip thing, and then I loaded the cyanogen7.1 zip and applied it. I got a load screen loop one time, but after taking out the battery and booting again, it loaded into cyanogen. I dont see the Market in the menu tho...
Rom Manager is installed though, but to do anything it wants to install CWM. So do I let it? I need the market, obviously. If Rom Manager is to be avoided, what replaces it? I liked how everything was in one place, with auto backup's and recovery of the phone, etc...

You just need to flash the latest gapps in recovery.
Okay, that's in process. But the question remains, should I uninstall Rom Manager or can I use it? If I shouldn't use it, is there anything that replaces it? How would I go about backing up my phone and data? I've paid for Titanium a while ago, so I know I can use that to backup app's, but what about the phone itself?

You'll have to uninstall rom manager as you need CWM recovery. To back up, simply backup all your apps and data in tb, boot into recovery, select nandroid restore/backup, selecet backup, and you NEED the first 3 checked [boot, system, data]. Also if its your first, backup wimax as well, then copy it to your pc for safe keeping, in case you ever lost your wimax keys.
Figured I would ask here instead of opening a new thread...I have an evo running hboot 2.10 and 3.30 software that I would like to root. I've used unrevoked back in the day but its been so long. So I was thinking about upgrading and using revolutionary. Is there really any difference that would want me to re learn unrevoked, or just upgrade the h boot and software and use revo? any insight would be appreciated

There is no reason to "upgrade" to revolutionary. Unrevoked is the same thing as revo. Just unrevoked doesnt work with the newer hboots. If your already s-off in bootloader there is no difference. U can use any rom regardless if u used revo or unrevoked. The whole object of rooting is to get s-off. Once you have it there is nothing more you can do. Ive used both on unrevoked on my original evo. And revo on my newer refurb. There basically the same. Easy auto root pretty much.

if you had been reading up on rooting and really doing your research then you should have learned that you never accept an update right when it comes out because you lose the ability to root until a fix is found (and it often takes some time).

just tried htcdev method to unlock phone. phone now shows unlocked. success with booting twrp recovery, will try to flash rom utilizing same method as EVO 3D users with HBOOT 1.50, should be the same. will update.
Edit: Okay, just booted up SWAG ROM. Unlocked using HTCDEV method. Pushed the kernel via adb fastboot, boot.img from the unzipped ROM folder. Then flashed the zip which was on the root of the SD card, just as described in the EVO 3D development forums, using twrp1.1.1.

Here's what I came up with. Still may do a video. Hope it makes sense, it was very early/late when I wrote this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458491
Slightly off this topic, but along the same lines, so I didn't want to start another thread.
I rooted back in November, prior to the latest OTA update - and had a pretty good understanding of what I was doing - I think.. heh
I NEVER flashed a new ROM, Kernel, Radio, etc. Only backedup, rooted, removed some bloatware, and that's it.
I still have superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip (I think?) in my root folder of my SD Card. Nothing else.
I backed up my Nandroid to my computer, as well as all the TitaniumPro backups of bloatware.
I saw Brad560's two posts - both Barebones and Stock ROM's.
In the Stock post, he listed Deodex'ed, Odexed, and Original UnRooted ROM. This confused me, as I'm still trying to wrap my head around the flashing part. Then I saw a reply about Radios?
I think at this point, I definitely want to remain rooted, but would like the "official" release from HTC/Sprint (in root form, stable, as close to the original as possible, for now).
Which ROM should I grab?
Will I need to flash a new kernel? I don't have any desire to overclock or anything.
And will I need to update the Radios separately?
Thanks, sincerely appreciate any help.
Just read in brads thread and all your answers will be there.

Thanks for replying.
I have read it. That's the first time I had heard of those things, which is why I asked here.
I think some folks forget what's it like to learn this stuff.. and while many here have been around for awhile and have absorbed over time, there are people like me (a military pilot btw lol) who has a tough time grasping some of the verbiage. I had the rooting thing down. Flashing a ROM seemed easy enough, though hadn't done it. Then someone throws up 3 versions in that post and 2 in the other. I get his barebones stuff - for the most part - he stripped stuff out.
Anyway, I suppose I will take the plunge and pick one of the ROMs, then suppose flash the latest radios.
Thanks!

For the time being, only way to "root"/unlock is via HTCDEV method which requires you be connected to your computer via USB sync cable.

[Q] HTC Evo 4G not turning on or goin to recovery

well i changed the battery and still nothing. i cant even fastboot flash a rom or recovery on it using my phone. i really think i bricked it. i have never bricked a phone so i really dont kno if i really did or not.
Usually the easiest answer is the correct one.
What did you do right before it started faulting?
Are you sure both batteries had a charge at all?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
i dont remember what i did right before it faulted but i do kno neither of the batteries r charging.
Did either battery have a charge on them prior to putting them in the phone, or did you just try and charge them in the phone?
Sent using my HTC EVO 4G and a magic wand
the batteries charge just fine in another phone. when i try to turn the phone on it will go to the white screen with HTC evo 4g on it and then it will go black and show the same white screen again. it keeps doin that until i pull the battery.
Can you get into the bootloader by pressing volume down + power? If so, try to boot into recovery and wipe cache and Dalvik. Then reboot. You might also try a different ROM.

For example, on the EVO shift S-ON means you have to flash the boot.img separately from the rest of the rom

I'm in the same boat, but I'm somewhat confused and just need clarification. I've rooted my moment and two evo's in the past, but this one is diiferent.
I achieved simple root with s-on with a coworkers EVO last night with hboot 2.18. All he wants is wifi tether and that's it. He's still on the stock rom.
I searched for hours and hours and can't find a definitive answer. Can I flash a new ROM from the sd card, or do I have to do it from a command prompt?
I have to be careful as I'm doing it at work and it's not my phone. I can't mess it up and send him on his way.
