I'm very new to developing and I was experimenting with the terminal. I typed stop and hit the return key and my phone screen went black. I then performed a battery pull and now my phone will not start. Can somebody give me instructions on what I did and how to fix it? Any help is appreciated
Have you tried booting into HBoot
battery pull, hboot, recovery, restore backup. if that doesnt work then maybe try fastboot? do you know what that command is meant to do?
UPDATE: I held down the power and volume up buttons for about 5 seconds. The device vibrated, but the screen stayed black and now the LED is blinking orange. How do I proceed from here?

I know that the "stop" command followed by an application will stop that application. I don't know what it does without an application after it

Have you tried a different battery? That doesn't seem to be a software issue.
Its the power button and volume down.
if nothing seems to be working then fastboot is probably your best option

I tried a different battery and the same thing happened. Even before I ran into this problem, when I would hit that button combination this would happen. Does anybody know what power + volume up (not volume down) does?

Did you have some problems with the volume rocker, especially with the vol+ button, recently?
It's the same that would have happened if you held down vol+ and power.
Also, which operation did you stop?
No problems with the volume keys but my phone always did that if I held the power button and the volume up. And I didn't stop any process I just typed in "stop", and hit enter
Hm, I just did exactly what you did.
-Ran "stop" in a root shell
-Display went black
-Pulled the battery
-Booted it up again
Didn't have any problems with it.
As far as I know, the flashing orange light at boot is triggered by the debug mode (vol+ and power, but you can't do anything in it) or a corrupted bootloader.
However, a corrupted bootloader caused by this command is very unlikely, since it doesn't actually do anything to the device's partition table.
Did you do anything to the bootloader or anything related to that before you hit stop? You might have screwed it up in another way, maybe without even knowing since the device will run without a problem, even with a corrupted bootloader. Until you reboot, that is.
Anyway, I'm still guessing that you're just entering the debug mode for whatever reason.
I will try it with a battery that I know is working. The splash screen isn't showing up either so I think the Android OS was corrupted in some way. Also, if I do have a corrupted bootloader, how would I fix that?

By sending it to HTC.
I don't really know if there are any JTAGs for the DHD.
Tried using a battery that I know works. No luck. I tried booting the phone up and booting into HBoot, but nothing happened

Ever since I went to cm7 nightly, I can't boot into recovery clockwork anymore. Holding volume down plus power does nothing anymore. Yeh I know I can get into it after booting up and going into clockwork but what happens if I can't boot someday and need to get into recovery?
You tried turning off, remove & reinsert the battery, hold volume down first then press power?
why would i remove the battery? Im not gunna take off my defender case each time i wanna do that
Ive done everything else though yes.

Because I asked if you'd tried it, which you haven't.
You thought that maybe the case might be pushing the volume buttons?
took the battery out and held down volume down + power and still nothing.
Is this feature totally turned off in CM7? I dont even see an option to turn on/off fastboot.
Im assuming this issue is the fault of the rom?
Is there another way to boot into the phone and install a rom without holding down volume + power?
EDIT: Did a complete overhaul and everything seems to work now. thx
Can you confirm that the volume keys work while switched on?
my volume keys work at all times

it's defo nothing to do with CM7, the bootloader is a deeper level of software and exists independently to the operating system. do you have adb? maybe you should try the " adb reboot bootloader " command, after you boot into bootloader, remove your battery and see if you can boot back into bootloader normally
Just a thought but have you disabled fast boot? Made that mistake myself and spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong.
thx guys but i got everything worked out 4 posts up
So continuing from here...
I don't know what is wrong with my phone. I had cm-11-20140113-primoc-sk installed and tried installing cm-11-20131126-UNOFFICIAL-primoc back after Wiping Data, Cache, and system. I got through all the steps until reboot to flash boot.img. I rebooted and it just turned black. Nothing functioned afterward. I'm not even sure it is off because I can still see a faint backlight on. There are no lights, computer doesn't recognize it, power and volume buttons don't do anything, and I can't access HBoot or recovery. Am I bricked?
I've flashed several ROMs with this phone and this is the first time this has happened. I had more than 50% of battery when doing this.
P.S. the faint backlight is still on.

Hold down the off button for 8-10 seconds and let the device turn off. Now reboot.
You can re enter recovery by holding the down volume button when you turn it back on

I tried that already. I tried almost all button combinations I knew.
Usually if its on and you hold down the off button the soft buttons will flash but nothing is flashing.

That is odd, prehaps your power button is a bit more mashed than mine. I'm guessing the battery has probably run out by now, but could you try adb or fastboot to see if the device is still recognised? From there we might be able to send it reboot commands etc

I don't think the power button is mashed up. I know the OneV tends to have a mushy power button but mine is still functioning well. Today when I pressed the power, the red led flashed several times. That means it has low battery right? I'm guessing it is off now? I'm not sure.

Well if those didn't solve your problem what I did was let my M8 run out of battery and then plugged it into my computer holding power+volume down and that allowed me to get into the bootloader and then into fastboot. I then erased the cache and entered recovery where I had a backup ready.
I'm experiencing the same problem, and still working on solving it. But for those who are stuck in the boot screen and need to shut off their phone so that they can boot up into recovery (power + vol down), hold down BOTH volume buttons and the power button and the phone will shut off in a few seconds. I couldn't find this anywhere and was getting annoyed waiting for the juice to run out so I tried a few things and this worked.
edit: turns out it's just volume UP and power to 'battery pull' the phone, not both, although that will work because you're pushing on up

You can also try this if you're not willing to wait for the battery to drain. I also ran into that very same problem, being stuck on the htc splash screen.. However this is how I fixed it. Like one of the posters above i too held the volume button up while at the same time holding down the power button. My HTC One M8 would just reboot back to the splash screen. So, i went through all of the steps above again but this time as the screen went off still holding the power button down. I immediately slid my finger from volume up to down. I continued holding it in the volume down position until the boot loader come up. I selected recovery from there and did a cache wipe and restored a NAND backup. I hope this helps someone.
Found a pretty easy fix
It's a somewhat common problem as I can tell,w hen the device stops on the splash screen (where it says "POWERED by Android") ,, and it has a pretty easy fix, which does not require drain the battery or erase the cache from ADB and so on ! What you do is, you hold down Volume UP + Power Button and keep it pressed till the device will re-restart itself and will boot in to the system (unless you completely f-ed up your system).
Good luck
I have found a way

Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Power button until you see a black screen. As soon as you see it press the Volume Down key and the Power button at the same time. This should get you to your bootloader.

thanks a lot. that did the trick.
Ok folks, normally I figure these things out but this one has me a bit concerned.
I was in ViperROM HUB and installed a font package, it needed to restart in recovery to install, so I allowed it. I turned to my computer and when I next looked at my phone the screen is off and refuses to come on. When depress the power button I get a vibration feedback but the screen won't come on. I tried VOL DOWN and POWER but nothing is happening. Im gonna let the battery run dead and see if that will resolve it.
Has anyone encountered anything like this before?

Hey!
I dont think its bricked.
Ghost helped me out with my problem, see below solution.
Try holding POWER + VOLUME UP for 20 seconds and it should restart.
However my case was different I was stuck in HTC logo screen and no way to restart.
On the M8 it is Power and Vol Up to perform a "battery pull".

Thanks grega_slo and gaiden0000 for the quick response and spot on advice.
I did that before but it didn't work, it works now…guess I didn't hold VOL UP long enough.
Yeah I didn`t know about VOLUP either
It scared the crap out of me when I S-OFFed the device and was stuck haha

never seem to hear a 'ding' or any other sound but no matter how I time it - power/vol up then power/vol down still results in htc splash then just black. Phone was quite warm (not quite hot) when I went to bed last night and this morning battery was at "0". When I first plugged it in and pushed the power button it alternated from the battery charging display to the TWRP locked screen but I couldn't seem to get it to stay on the TWRP screen no matter what I did. Now that I've used power/vol up I don't seem to get the battery or TWRP. just black or when trying power/vol up I get the splash. Power/vol down gives nothing - just black
EDIT: Just tried - let battery go dead. Plug in to computer hold power/vol down. Screen goes from battery icon to blank and back to battery icon.
EDIT: Pulled and reformatted sd card in Evo 4g LTE. Retried fastboot command still just shows "waiting for device". Even tried adb reboot bootloader and reply "device not found"
Could I use adb to reflash ruu? If so would the command be adb flash (filename)
Was beginning to lose hope of ever fixing this but a HUGE shout out to Simer03 who provided the critical piece of information - namely - add a ROM zip to your sd card. Hope nobody else ever has this problem but just in case
Post #4 here
Nothing is going to work unless you can either enter the boot loader or boot into the os.
You should still be able to access hboot unless that is corrupt. At the very least you need to hear the ding on your pc so you know the pc has recognized your device is connected.
Try again with vol up and power, hold until it reboots you should then hear that ding. If not check you have the necessary usb drivers installed on your pc or try a different usb cable.
When I power on my m8 it gets frozen on htc one screen.
when i press power+volume down it just simply power on
Please help.
Do this:
1) Hold power+vol up for a minute or so, to force a reboot
2) The moment the screen goes dark to reboot (but before the HTC logo screen appears - you actually have about 3 seconds to do this), let go of those buttons, and start holding vol down only. Don't let go until you see bootloader.
3) If you fail to get into bootloader, you probably just got the timing wrong (either started pressing vol down too late, or let go too early). Just repeat steps 1 and 2, until you get it right.
Nothing happens holding power+vol up

It would have been broken (or was malfunctioning) before. It didn't suddenly break.
If you've never had any problems with the vol rocker, its probably fine.
Try charging the phone for a few hours, then try again. Try the button sequence with the charger attached.
You can also try letting the battery run out. Then after that, charge it and try holding power+vol down.

No. There is no way to do anything, unless you can either boot to OS or bootloader.
You have to keep trying to get to bootloader, one way or another. Its really your only option.
What happens if you just hold power (for a minute or so)?
