What exactly do you want to do? What system is it you are using? Android? Symbian? Windows (Phone)? Besides that I do not know of any book about it, and i doubt there is a book that specifically works with nfc.

IDK for sure yet The book doesn't need to be specified strictly to NFC, and I am thinking of using it like unlocking my bedroom door with my android phone or open the garage door. Stuff like that.
So you want to use your android phone as a smart card (or rfid token, basicly the same thing though)? Well, word of advice, wait some more time and see how the market is developing. This is not possible on stock android and especially not for hobby programmers at the moment. Only works if garage door and bedroom door use ISO14443 types of card and your willing to root your phone. And then you need to see if your phone is actually capable to do what you want.
Some topics to read in for you (no need for a book here, researching the web is enough):
Secure Element
ISO14443
Card Emulation

My phone is rooted. I decided just to look into arduino rfid instead. I wanted to make read/write rfid cards.
Exactly, I've already done all sorts of emulation, NFC related voice function programming using a raspberry pi and an NFC breakout board. If you want more knowledge than people doing a web search go to adafruit.com. You will find plenty of cool projects and they even wrote some excellent tutorials if you need for working with arduino and NFC or whatever way you go. Look under NFC/RFID section tons of info on the page with the NFC breakout board.

This usecase means you want to use your phone as a card / tag. A usecase hardly usable if usable at all for hobby programmers or third party devs.
This is what you said after my big post:

That means the phone should read write a card or tag. That is something different and is actually possible for third party devs and hobby programmers.

It's cool. I love to fly.
I saw this a while back but it was only for iOS back then. I'm glad to see them coming over to the dark side. I'm enough of a nerd as to go out and buy this. lol
Edit: Wait, I think they still may only support iPhones.
Edit again: There are apps in the Android market! Time to get on eBay! lol
im planning to get one of these toys
The British Car show Top Gear tested the iPhone version of that in the News Segment of the East America Special.......
http://www.ecrater.com/p/10813807/parrot-ardrone-quadricopter-controlled-by
I have 2 of these (see http://headloaf.co.uk for some stuff I've done with them).
There is already a development thread on ardrone-flyers.com with regards to Android control but I am sure that they will apreciate some input from this community too.
This is a great 'toy' and the community at ardrone-flyers.com are always looking to improve it even more. We've even managed to mount GPS to it and control it using 7ch TX rather than WiFi....loads of fun to be head with these!
It is designed for iOS use buy there are several scripts that can be run on the drone itself (as the drone runs off a linux base) so that it can be controlled via PC/Laptop, Mac, Android - these can all be found on ardrone-flyers.com along with some scripts for object tracking etc.
They are also some similar toys, which are working with bluetooth, even with older mobiles
That's freaking cool!!
Maybe after I pay some bills off and figure out how to pay for a wedding I will revisit this I love to fly RC planes and helicopers and I love playing with my phone so this is 2 awesome things in one!
Cool ... ... one day I'll get my hands on this techie stuff and control using an Android
that is Fking wicked just like the heli i build myself back when i was kid using foam and RC set.
but this is using the PHONE!!!!!!!! as the controller AWEOME!
i wonder how far is the range of those things

Range is 50 meters, but according to this:
http://www.ardrone-flyers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=807
You can stretch that out to 150-200 meters using some hardware and a little good old fashioned ADB.
it is cool cant wait to see some more of your future work
pretty sweet! can't wait to spy on my parents with this.
Even on ebay the price tag on this thing is high in would love to have one but I just don't see spending 300 on this plus parts if you want to mod it out

Play with other users via a Wi-Fi network
Another major feature is the use of several AR.Drone on a network.
Thanks to its own generated Wi-Fi network, players can create a game party where others players can join and play against each other.

Does this mean it creates a WiFi channel in which the phone connects to so it would work anywhere within the Generated WiFi range, e.g. my giant backyard?
EDIT:
* What type of connection is established between the AR.Drone and the iPhone?
The AR.Drone is connected to the iPhone by an ad hoc Wi-Fi link.
* Do I need a Wi-Fi router to operate my AR.Drone?
No, the AR.Drone creates its own Wi-Fi network. The iPhone(or device) can then connect to it just like with any Wi-Fi network.

Wow!
I also got one but it`s a pain in the axx to connect them with each other each time. Since Android does not support Ad-Hoc Wireless , we have to trick the AR Drone into Telnet thru your PC.
This means you have to carry a PC/Laptop with you to play with AR DRONE each time you want to turn on your Ar Drone
Kinda sucks ha ?
Read this LINK , this is how I get them to connect to each other .....
Anybody knows any better method to connect them ? I mean how to enable AD HOC on Android , I tried all the methods but none of them worked so far ... Is there an application or something ?
My phones are HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S

Well - this thread got me going a couple of days on getting a Drone
But have not found the time / probably won't either ... one thing I did read though is that it is possible to have the AR Drone connect to a WLAN (infrastructure - not adhoc).
It has some limitations concerning the IPs you use and probably security - but perhaps it is less a pain to carry around an extra router with your configured AR-WLAN
Google it - it was not hard to find
This is unrelated to Android but well worth posting.

Moo.com is a custom printing company that specializes in high quality business cards and "mini-cards". Their latest product is a business card with a writable NFC chip inside. They've taken to calling it the "third side" of the business card.
No technical details or pricing yet, but if you place an order for one of their other products, they'll throw one in for free.
It's simply a NFC tag embedded into the paper. Should not be that expensive.
that is relative damastus. NFC tags are currently about $1 each ordered on ebay from china (anyone found cheaper?)
$1 for an NFC tag is not much $1 for a business card is like buying a solid gold business card. IE you won't be selling too many

Interesting, will see how this works
I only need one card to be NFC enabled, and that'll be in the clear card holder on the front of my binder. Then people can just tap it to add my business contact to their phone.
EDIT: Of course, currently I'm just going to stick a sticker on the back of my current card... But if I can get one free the next time I order cards, might as well.

Is there any advantage of having NFC enabled business cards when I already have a NFC enabled Phone with a Business card app? I am new to NFC, so its possible I am missing something.
the advantage is you can "do" interesting things with your business card (embed stuff in it electronically)
now you CAN do the exact same thing with QR codes as well (and they are free) but NFC requires ZERO initial input from the user if they are already "set up" to use NFC (it its already turned on etc.. etc..)
just touch the card to the phone and it "does it" while the QR code requires them to install a camera scanner and requires them to load it run it align it with the card get it in focus etc.. etc..
Just a more "transparent" form of QR basically but for some operation that transparency makes the difference between useful and useless.

This I understand. I was just telling that a NFC enabled phone can act as a card, what is the advantage of a separate card.
I am trying to be humurous here
so your just going to hand them your $500 phone and say keep it ? hehe
point i they can take the "card" with them. they can't take your PHONE with them and it retain the NFC active transparent content.
should also be GREAT for word of mouth once NFC is more common place.
let me give you an example. you have a large client who can possibly get your MORE clients. you give them one of these special NFC cards.
now when he see's someone else who also needs XYZ he can say he I know this guy here scan his card and he pulls out your business card and touches it to the back of this other person's phone and poof they got your info too.
lots of interesting usage possibilities. just needs to come down in price.

Portability, mostly. You don't have to fire up your business card app, and hand the phone to someone. I know a salesman who has an NFC tag on his portfolio - at meetings he uses that to share his business info, then gives out business cards. He said it's mostly for the coolness factor, and to break the ice (he sells software to geeks like me )
That said, I don't expect to see these get real popular at $1 a pop. At 10 cents, yes. As someone else pointed out, a QR code is free. Moo will let you add a QR code to a business card or mini card.
q426669 is right, a simple NFC sticker would do the job as well, but this supplier: TapMy.Biz actually managed to integrate the chip inside of the paper itself. So it actually feels like paper and the chip is totally invisible. Price is a little more than 1$ just that you get the mentioned added value I just described. Also they do the encoding for you which saves you time. I tried a few suppliers and they where the only one that actually ship right now, and don't deliver total crap.
Like nerys71 said NFC business cards are a great way to be remembered, so for some it might not be worth it to invest so much in a business card but like he said for some it really pays off. It really just depends in which industry you work in. A flower store for example wont get as much out of, but a grafic designer (links to his online portfolio) or app dev (links to the app in the playstore), or a simple startup (has vcard info on it) might benefit a lot from that. Investing in your business card can pay off. Check out this funny video which fits the subject: youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=4YBxeDN4tbk

those are a bit more than $1 they are over $2 a pop even if you order 100 of them (whats $155 Euro's in US $ ?)
155 euro is about 200 usd. If nfc becomes more popular I reckon ways will be found to make it cheaper.

Great idea! But to simplify things, why not just use an NFC tag programed to run the app of your choice and adjust any settings then stick that on the mount?

Originally that was exactly my intent. I wanted to show a very cool use for NFC by integrating it into my car dock. (I even blogged about that too ).
I couldn't exactly get NFC to work the way I wanted to. So far, there doesn't seem to be an event that I can trigger of for when an NFC tag is no longer in range. I believe it was possible to do what I wanted via NFC, but it would have wound up being a little more complicated than I wanted. Maybe as hardware and software improves, NFC will become more useful for things like this.
Those mounts are nice I guess but I got a suction cup one for $4 that works very well, the one you listed was around $65 for the two parts. My Bluetooth adapter was $15 and you spent $99. Seems kind of crazy man.

Yeah, I got a little spendy on the mount, I won't argue that. For what it's worth, my previous mount was the binder-clip mount that I talked about in the first article. That thing was great, but the vents in my "new" didn't work quite well and I wanted something with integrated power that didn't involve all sorts of power cords running across the dashboard.
For awhile, I actually toyed with the idea of disassembling a cigarette lighter power adapter and hard wiring it into the center console and then routing that cable up through car's ducting.
I'm pretty happy with what I got for the price, but the installation is really nice plus I can swap out the bits on the mount and use it to mount other devices too. I really liked that feature.

You could always have another one somewhere close to set it back. But I never even thought of a trigger after you remove the NFC tag. Thought it was implemented.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised when there wasn't a way for Tasker (or something else) to kick off an action when an NFC tag was no longer in range too. It seems like something that should be easily implemented down the road.
I thought about doing a 2nd NFC tag to clear it, but I didn't really want to have to touch my phone to something else every time I exited the car.
The closest I could think of, would be to create a Tasker Task to set a variable, use something like NFC Task Launcher to launch that task. And then to create a profile that says as long as the phone is powered, the variable is set then it's in the Car profile. Then, the exit actions for that profile would be to set the variable back to the original value.
Theoretically, that would accomplish something along the lines of what I wanted but it didn't seem like a better option than using Power + the Position Sensor.
Now on the off chance that I wind up having problems because there are other situations (other than driving) where I have the phone plugged into power and in that position, I may have to think of another scenario.
I'd probably just get a head unit with a USB port but like you mentioned it'd be super easier to hardwire an adapter into a 12v wire and put a USB port in the dash.

This is where i was thinking, cause i use my phone to stream videos when plugged in, and usually watch them full screen.
But i just watched a YouTube video demonstrating the NFC tags. And he had a profile for "Movie mode" and all he did to restore the other mode was tap the NFC tag again. So i wonder if there is a setting for like "restoring" what the NFC tag changed. What are you using to program the NFC tag? NFC Tasker from the market? I think if you use a PC reader/writer you have more functionality.

Yeah, in your situation I don't think my solution would work well. Unless you did something quirky like watched your movies with the USB port on the phone sticking out to the left and in the car dock have the USB port facing right (or vice versa)
The guy in the video tapped the same NFC tag again to revert his settings? I'd be interested to see how he did that if you've got the URL handy. Although I imagine that I'd have to un-dock the phone, re-dock it (to clear the car mode), and then un-dock it one more time, that's not nearly as convenient as it is right now.
To I've been using NFC Task Launcher and Tagstand Writer to read&write my different tags for use with Tasker. In my case, using NFC Task Launcher I was launching a particular Task configured in Tasker. NFC Task Launcher has a library of things it can do on it's own, but nothing quite like I knew I could do via Tasker.
I'm unsure of what actually gets written to the NFC tag, I think for the most time it's URIs. I'm quietly hoping that there's some really cool applications for NFC that just haven't been developed quite yet.
I'm not aware of any PC NFC reader/writer apps, but that's because I've just been using my phone to do it. If there's a more robust app out there, I'd be interested in checking it out and seeing what all I can do.
Cloud somebody please tell me the NAME of this connector? I have another device that has the exact same one and I want to connect an external antenna to it and need an adapter for it (to FME). But since I do not know its name, I don't know what to order. It is not CRC-9.

No idea what it's called, but do be careful and order the right one as a larger diameter pin can force the contacts inside open permanently, thus disabling the internal antenna even without the external antenna connected.
Beamed from my Maguro.
Thanks for the heads-up. That already happened to me while messing with it. Then I messed with it a little more and it went back.
Anybody else know the name of the connector? Or where else I could try to ask this question?
Actually I tried to check in iFixit website here but could not find it. I think it would be useful to go to a good repairing shop and ask them to help you know more about this component.

external antenna connection/jack
AFAIK, they are all the same size. But save yourself the money, the external antennas are pretty much useless with newer cell systems. You can try a repeater that mounts on your windows but even then you have to figure out line of site with the cell tower you pull from.
It's not worth the risk. Internal works well enough. If you insist on external antenna get something Bluetooth based.

A: It's called dog! They're all the same.
Seriously, like I wrote in the first post, it's not CRC-9, I already tried that one, and although it looks like it might fit in, it doesn't! I also tried two others from an electronics shop and they didn't fit. (unfortunately I don't remember their names) There are several types of similar connectors like this one and most of them are not compatible to each other.

Thanks for the answer. I had tried, prior to opening this thread, to ask at a couple of electronics shops, but nobody could help. Then I tried again this week at another shop and the guy said it's "MMX" but they don't have it. But I'm guessing he actually meant "MMCX", because "MMX" doesn't seem to be a type of connector. I'll just probably order that one, and see if it fits...
So I tried MMCX. It doesn't fit either! The search continues...

some time ago i read on a galaxy s2 thread that the connector is only to be used by manufacturer to test the antenna and not meant as an expansion for after market accessory. The guy said that he actually broke a little pin (or anyway a little piece of metal) inside the connector by using an external antenna and now the phone only works with the external antenna. Just in case you didn't know..unfortunately i can't post the thread, it shouldn't be hard to find anyway.
I know, I know, don't worry about that! All I'm trying to do is find out the name.

Some call this part the "MS147 connector", but AFAIK it's a CK589-AMGC
Hope that helps
Hey guys, I'm obsessed with NFC at the moment, I'm also studying in year twelve, unemployed and have no income whatsoever.
So being the cheap person I am I find work arounds.
Did you know its not hard to find yourself some free tags around the city ?
I'll keep this updated as I find more, and won't remove things cause even trash floats around forever.
Let's get to the point!
There's several things around Sydney containing NFC, that usually aren't even formatted.
Found so far I have;
• Luna park yellow passes, they contain blank writable ICODE tags with 106 bytes. (NFC forum compliant)
• UTS open day 2013 yellow bands. These have ultralight tags, also NFC forum compliant. These only have 46 bytes but are still free so don't complain!
• Opal Cards. Well we cant write to these but if youre lucky enough to find one on the road like me, you can use its unique ID to trigger apps. These are NFC Forum Type 4, Mifare Desfire EV1 4k cards.
• Single Use Opal Cards, these were introduced when the paper tickets stopped being sold. They contain Mifare Ultralight C tags.
I'll attach photos, so keep an eye out and don't feel bad picking them up!
I hope I can help some cheap people to get into NFC and love it as much as I do!!
tl;dr list:
free tags inside:
UTS yellow wrist band - Mifare Ultralight
Luna Park Yellow unlimited pass - ICODE
Opal Card - Mifare Desfire EV1 4K
Single Use Opal Card - Mifare Ultralight C

Awesome find!
Hey! Awesome find bro!
I'll have to stay on the lookout! You've got me wondering about those "thick" barcodes which make alarms go off in stores if you walk out with them (REALLY tired today, that's the best description I can give). I wonder how many things around us are actually compatible with NFC?
What app are you using to identify these things as NFC by the way? I know there's many that can do the job, but as I'm not too experienced with NFC, I might as well take tips from someone who's had success already
This is really interesting. Although not from Australia I'll keep an eye out for NFC tags around Atlanta. I am interested as well in finding out how you identified them.

ill update soon with more,
The thick barcodes are a simple magnetized bit of metal that sets of the reader, at the counter they demagnetize it., which is why you shouldn't put credit cards on the counter.
i use taginfo by nxp to ID the tag type, but its generally guessing with what things are actual nfc tags haha
if i think something might be (i saw someone scan a wristband) then i find one and scan it!
