Jelly Bean 4.2 Seems Buggy: Worth the effort? - Samsung Captivate Glide

http://www.legitreviews.com/news/14538/
I can't post in developers section, but maybe someone can persuade Dman to focus on 4.1.2?
Just saying.

Not buggy. Why would Google release it if it is...
Plus GNex got it already, My GSIII will have it in a matter of days, GNex threads rated 5 stars...

I think OP might be referring to how something like December is missing in some stock apps.

Yeah, Google probably won't patch it or anything. Let's just write the whole thing off.

Ya who cares about December anyways, not like there is a major Holiday associated to it!
Not!!
I am positive Google will patch it, they already stated they were going to.

quoting KenEsq at provided link
4.2 has been a disaster here on our Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7s. If there were any easy way to go back we would in a second. Google should be ashamed of releasing this mess.
1. We had more app crashes in the past three days then we had in the previous 6 months.
2. Battery life is about 75% of what it was on the Galaxy Nexus.
3. There's something wrong with the way the touchscreen on the GNexus is calibrated now. Touch an icon near the edge will initiate a page turn/slide rather than launch an app.
4. Numerous slowdowns, lagging.
5. Missing month of December.
6. Time on the GNex is bizarre. Other apps that also report time aren't in sync with the system time and that seems to be off a great deal.
7. The new lock screen on the Nex7 is a mess. It's slow/laggy. It can take multiple entries of the pin code for it to work and then you may be greeted with a black page. If you have one widget page selected (time) every power on will greet you with a partial view of the blank widget page.
8. Many apps including the Amazon Appstore (they patched it yesterday) lost their ability to have persistent login.
Should you not believe my reports head over to XDA you'll find a slew of additional information. Suffice it to say if you haven't "upgraded to 4.2" yet...DON'T!
End quoting
But whatever. Maybe it's all made up.
I love Android too, don't get me wrong.

Nobody is saying that its made up. We're saying that Google is working on the problem and a bugfix is in the works

But this isn't just a "missing December", fixing everything should take some time, and for what? What’s so new and shiny about 4.2? I only heard of the photos combination thing, which is nice, but that’s it.
I didn't say it doesn´t have a fix, I was only wondering if it's worth waiting for it/solving it instead of focusing on a nice, complete 4.1, which is already half done.
@Aquethys
I was under the impression Dman had stopped developing his 4.1 ROM to focus on 4.2 (now I realize it’s for The Collective, not the Glide). Since it is not 100% clear whether he will continue working on 4.1 or start a new 4.2 project (for the Glide) when he finishes, I don´t think it is a total waste of time to exchange opinions on this subject beforehand (not that we were his bosses anyway, he may as well take some well-deserved holidays). We are tech guys, “counting our chickens before they hatch” is what we like the most
Ps: I’m not an expert, but the fixes you mentioned sounded more like bypassing rather than solving.

All the stuff mentioned above can be fixed.
1. Calendar. Use another apk.
2. Battery Life. Custom ROMs can take care of this. Lots of ways to manipulate this. Also, it's only been released to source in a matter of days. Give it a couple weeks. C'mon..
3. Calibration. Again, custom ROMs. Some even have calibration options.
4. Lag. Overclock, underclock.
I could go on and on...
This is really pointless arguing over whether or not we should build 4.2. It's like counting our chickens before they hatch.

Why is there no ICS ROM for epic touch?

Google opened the source. I believe Samsung did as well. There's a ROM for international s2 working with TW is there something i'm missing? Also, why is google allowing TW on ICS I thought the purpose of ICS was to eliminate having to wait for manufacturer/carrier updates and consolidate phones and tablets to the one OS to maintain and innovate.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
The Google's Android Alliance is dead. I believe that since manufacturer's are already going back on their word, they're still changing things up a bit. Besides, who would get an HTC if it ran the same software as Samsung's phones? (Or vice versa). The unique feel between all of these devices are marked by their UI, otherwise the phone with the best hardware will dominate all. (although I wouldn't mind an AOSP ICS rom for ourselves.)
More money could be invested in the hardware instead of cutting corners to save money for the programming. The net result would increase the lead over iPhone users. Which gives us better hardware, immediate updates, and more software as app Sellers would favor writing for Android. Just my 2 cents.

The Nexus builds are nice but they aren't perfect. I use it as my daily on my NS4G but the battery life isn't the greatest. The devs probably decided to just wait for the official since we are supposedly going to be one of the next phones to get it. They could do it but there would be no 4g and Google quietly pulled the OTA update temporarily due to battery life issues. The gapps tax my battery big time..especially Google+. We will get our turn. In the meantime, try one of the themes with ADW EX or Go Launcher and you can have the look

No official build yet.(period)
I just want you all to know that there is no official build at all for this rom yet. No beta at least. Sprint doesn't have it yet either. Sprint isn't testing the rom nor has Samsung sent them the rom. So, don't expect the update in the next month.
The way is works is Samsung sends it to Sprint. Sprint test it and Samsung fixes any issues. Sprint test it again and when they find no issues it gets sent to the consumer. Sprint doesn't even have it yet to test it.
And, there are people working on making a non official build but it doesn't work great yet. It is missing a lot of key features. I am thinking we might see some usable roms at the end of the month.
Sprint is currently fixing the ICS for the Nexus S. When that is complete they will start on the Epic. You might see that update in 2 weeks. The epic should be done in 6-8 weeks(this is a early guess, I will know more in 3 weeks).
Development is horrible for the epic touch on xda because every single thread, regardless of the original post, turns into a flame war. I have been told by two devs that this is the reason they stopped developing for the epic touch on xda.

A quick word about JB hate.

We've seen lots of complaining in the last couple of days about what is and isn't working in these ports.
It seems GPS may or may not be working correctly, that it may or may not be due to the Leap Second.
WiFi, Bluetooth, volume... if you have these issues, they can mostly be remedied. If not, gratz.
The fact is, these Roms are ports of development previews on a phone slightly but importantly different than yours running an OS that hasn't been released yet.
I was deeply amazed and impressed that some developers had working ports to CDMA the very night it was announced for GSM.
I'd you are running one of these JB ports and you find that it works well enough as a daily driver, consider yourself fortunate and hit the thanks button on the OP, maybe even donate.
If you are trying it out, but find that it lacks the stability or functionality that you require, click the thanks button on the OP anyway because they spent the time to give you something now for free that which you would otherwise have to wait weeks for, or, considering VZW's track record, maybe never.
This is how I'm looking at it- I'm getting to preview the latest update for free before it officially comes available. Just like those lucky bastards at Google I/O, except how much did they pay per ticket?
Thanks, devs, for doing what you do.

They paid $900 per ticket. But they get $1200 or so free of stuff. So they actually received 300 for going to it if you look at it that way.
Nevertheless I'm very pleased with JB. Everything is working beautiful for me. I using daily driver now without any issues. Just the stock JB at that. I'm not much for all the features of Roms. More into kernel tweaks which I do miss from glados kernel. But Franco is doing fine for now.

i think people are forgetting these roms are from nandroids! lol!
I most definitely appreciate the efforts. I ran the Vicious JB stock port on my VZW Gnex but in the end, I couldn't stick with it because the Verizon framework apps don't work on Jelly Bean yet. This means I couldn't use the My Verizon or NFL Mobile apps, and that's a deal breaker. I understand that you can blame Verizon for requiring the back end framework in order for their branded apps to work, and that's all fine and well, but at the end of the day, I couldn't run them.
Be that as it is, I still appreciate the efforts of those developers to have a working CDMA port the same night. Thanks to all who do what you do. I'm a software developer myself so I know how tedious this crap can be.
Half of the JB "hate" posts are not "my app doesn't work, JB sucks!" but rather "my app doesn't work, I'm posting it in case someone has stumbled upon a fix"
The problem is 80% of the people who own a GN are:

That sort of depends. There are some changes that have to be made to a ROM for the GSM model to be 'ported' to the CDMA models. So, it's a 'port' for those phones, because only the GSM developer preview was 'released'.
They do realize other top phones are just getting ice cream sandwich, and we Nexii already have Jelly Beans sweet taste in our mouths?? Ridiculous!

IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.

Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

By the time we even get Android 4.1, Android 4.2 will already be out in the market.
First, 4.2 will not be key lime pie.
Second, its not Samsungs fault, its the carriers.
And being the carriers fault - you have to wonder. Do they each only have like 2 people working on the Updates...or wtf. lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!

this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...

4.3 finally scheduled - somewhat

I haven't seen anything posted about this yet, but 4.3 is finally scheduled for the s3, at least in france. Hopefully by january we'll see a 4.3 rom released. I know you can get 4.3 now using AOKP or cyanogen but I actually like touchwiz so I'm looking forward to getting this.

I see Android 4.4 was announced we had expected the Android 5.0 release date to be some time in October 2013. We now expect to see Android 4.4 KitKat launch during that month. In the face of that point release, we think it's now likely that we'll see Android 5.0 shown in mid-2014. It a lot of babble but On 13 June 2013, VR-Zone also claimed that Android 5.0 will be optimized to run on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM.. We will see . I have doubts we will see ...

If it's released in November I would expect to see it get through T-Mobile and be released to us by January, maybe February. I don't know why everyone always insists that it takes a half a year for ours to get updated, when all the updates we received from 4.0.4 - 4.1.2 happened within a few months of each other. Often in only 2 months.
I'd imagine that Samsung is going to push to get everything updated before or at least right after Christmas. The main reason we are skipping to 4.3 is for compatibility with future devices such as their smartwatch. They'll sell a lot more for Christmas if they are already compatible with the S3!

And you are probably wise not to. As the device gets older, it will take longer to get any updates. If I am right about the timeframe for this one, it'll likely be the last timely update we see.
If I'm wrong and we have to wait a year, then so be it. I don't plan to let it reduce my enjoyment of the device if that is true. Never understood why people get so worked up over an update! If they're not happy with it, there's always other options available.
My only real issue is with people claiming we are always last, or it always takes 6-9 months for an update, and then feeling like that gives them reason to complain about poor customer service. Personally, I'm fine with it if it does take a year. In the end, anything and everything you see written about it, including my last post, is pure speculation, nothing more. I keep getting asked about what I expect to see though, and while I don't usually like to predict anything, I figured I'd go ahead and post my thoughts on it. That's the thing, I'm not complaining, I just replied with a time frame when we would get the update, no need to get upset and go on a rant. I cant even remember the last time ive actually touchwiz on my s3 for more than a few minutes, I could actually care less when the S3 is updated. I'm happy as long as there's support for cm/aosp/aospa/aokp and hopefully Ubuntu touch in the near future, but I think we have a better chance of T-Mobile updating our poor outdated "smart" phone than getting a fully working port of Ubuntu touch.

I would think around January or February we will get the update. But also am not getting my hopes up.
I thought of making a new thread but figured it made more sense to post here, question for anybody using one of the currently 4.3 roms. What are the common problems and issues with any of the existing 4.3's? Is there a 4.3 that is good enough to use as a daily driver? I haven't tried any myself yet mainly because I have tread enough yet to make an informed choice.

The 4.3 ROMs in the development sections are custom ROMs (cm, aosp, aospa, aokp...etc). This thread is covering the 4.3 update from Samsung which we do not have.
What may be a daily driver to others may not be a daily driver for you. Go through the 4.3 custom ROM threads and read a few pages to get an idea of what issues may or may not be present and flash the one that suits your needs.
If you don't want to flash a custom ROM, then your only option is to flash the 4.1.2 touchwiz ROMs available until T-Mobile releases the 4.3 update.

I would consider those to be in beta, sometimes alpha stages. If for no other reason than they sometimes have problems reading the nv data. Doesn't happen to everyone, but it happens enough. After flashing, baseband, serial number and imei (maybe more) all read unknown or zero. You have to either reboot several times or flash another Rom, to fix.
The nv data isn't lost, as is sometimes the case with the IMEI. As I understand it, the Rom just isn't reading it.

why has touchwiz rom development grinded to such a slow pace?

pardon me if this had been asked recently. while the roms out there are top notch, I feel like im getting bored. why is there never new roms or updates? is it because we still have 4.1.2?
I bought this phone because its the greatest phone for me. battery life. size. power. etc. thought it would be one of the better supported.
dont get me wrong. I love the rom im using. its flawless. so I shouldnt complain. but it also has a feature to use torch on lockscreen by pushing the home button. love it. but I cant find it as an add on. so im stuck on this rom.
and im nervous about aosp roms. I love them. I really do. but battery life decreased by about 50% during the week I had an aosp rom installed. so im partial to touchwiz.
I have a great set up now. its just discouraging to think people are giving up on the note 2. which imo is still the best phone you can buy. not over the top on specs but good enough. huge battery. screen res that is not beyond what my eyes can see. and a cpu that doesnt have to blsze at 50 million mhz to run the phone and every app I need. enough ram. etc
This is the same song-and-dance that Samsung has displayed since they started making flagship Androids. They promise timely updates, and not a single one of their phones has ever received an update that can even be conceived of as "timely."
The way Samsung treats their customer base is exactly why TW ROM development has grinded to a halt. People are sick of it. There is nothing new that can be done/added to 4.1.2, so TW devs are waiting for 4.3 to drop (if and when it ever does) to resume TW development.

Or, the devs have done as much as possible with what's been released of TW thus far.
To the OP: The pinnacle has been achieved. Go forth and use your phone and not be bothered by the lack of dev lately: there's nothing left to do until more TW is released by Samsung

Tips for a pleasant XDA:
Search before asking. Someone has likely already asked.
Spell your words completely, and use punctuation. It confuses people when you use "u" and "ur" and "dat", or when you wrongly use "there/their/they're/your/you're".
Be nice. Don't be rude, just move on to another post without leaving a comment. We are not 7 years old.
And PLEASE, do not ask for the "best" anything. We all have our preferences.

Agreed my HTC one went from 4.1.2 to 4.2 to 4.3 already while my note 2 has yet to get an update.
That is sad lol
We should not complain. This is nothing compared to the wait i had to endure with my x10
Because AOKP rules and I get over 6 hours of screen on time with the stock battery/kernel
You said your nervous about AOSP roms because of the battery drain......I was always told the Rom needs to settle and drain all the way down and charge all the way up a couple of times before it settles and you will see the buttery smooth stuff....lol...(Great Battery Life)
Once a month, I let my battery completely die and charge it all the way up (while phone is off)....
I have great battery life on all the roms I try. I can make my phone last 4 days doing regular stuff most of the time before a charge...
I do always come back to Jedi X19....Its just more my type. Beanstock, PACMAN, and others are good too...I just have better experiences with multiple apps while working with TW roms. On the other hand, all the customization you can do with an AOSP rom is insane and I miss it......
To each is own......Battery life sucks on stock roms...Even with freezing apps, its nothing compared to a custom rooted rom.

4.3 TW rom for the Note 2 should be out in a month or so. Development will increase again since they will actually have something new to work with. Unless you are looking for a TW rom that gets updated weekly and the only changes made is the style/size/color of the font.
AOSP development tends to slowdown (almost to a halt) everytime a new version release draws near, as developers don't want to spend countless hours making a new feature that might very well not work in the new version. Once the source code is out development will skyrocket for AOSP devices, while our forum may take a few additional weeks to actually start seeing any action.
Last, I don't consider this device to be stale and dead, I just think that it's in a limbo of some sort. Since I only run AOSP roms I'm not mad at Samsung support, but I am very intrigued of the way samsung has ingnored it's MOST EXPENSIVE phone. I really expected a lot more from them. But as I said I'm runnig 4.3 (AOKP) and I'm extremely happy with my Note 2. Don't see any other device out there that would make me ditch the Note 2. (well maybe I'm a little curious of the Oppo N1).
