Hello everyone.
Im a HTC Faithful and currently using an Evo 4g still. This phone is starting to show its age and im thinking of picking up a Epic Touch.
But looking at the dev section, it doesnt seem that there are that many roms in progress, let alone any updated ICS roms. There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on.
Im just wondering where all the ICS roms are. If i moved over, id prob want to stick to ICS.
Anyone move from Evo to Epic Touch and feel that there are enough roms? That its being supported as much as other HTC phones?
Any input?
Depends. The Stock Touchwiz Roms from samsung has plenty of development here. The AOSP side we just barely got a CM7/KANG that has quite a few bugs. For some those bugs arent a problem, but for me it didnt pass as a daily driver.
Also the whole Clockworkmod-fused-with-the-kernel/rom on this phone will give you a headache if this is your first time rooting a Samsung Phone.
It would be my first Samsung rooting. I have looked over the instructions and saw it's somewhat different from HTC style, but nothing I can't handle.

I personally think samsung is easier when it comes to rooting, etc. I came from an evo 3d, and that was kind of a headache, especially themeing because of the .m10 files that it had. I kinda lean toward samsung though, if you cant tell by my sig.
No where
I see that no one has answered your main question...There are no ICS ROMs available as of right now...The deves are creating a base for it so when its possible to create one, they can implment it faster.
Uhhh. I guess the dev's are working on them.
I'd be stoked if you can work faster than they can, or pay them to work faster...
But it's not like changing a battery, there's a lot of work that goes into cooking a ROM.
They want to get CM7 complete and stable as a base to use for other Aosp roms. Samsung's official ICS for our device will have touchwiz and I think 95% of us don't want that. We need Aosp roms and kernels nailed down before we progress any further. Once the devs have a stable functional base to work from other doors will open. It takes time.

I'm not knocking the devs or anything. I understand how ROMs work and have built my own in the past.
I guess I'm just surprised that such a popular device doesn't have any devs working on ics while ancient devices like the Evo and HD2 have multiple roms.
What matters the most to me are phones that have a large modder base. I semi expected to see this place packed with devs and other crazy stuff. Caught me off guard that it's quieter in here then in the Evo section.

thank you for the helpful post. I'm glad that someone felt the sense pain with me.
So... Until sprint comes out with a superphone, would you recommend just getting this phone on CL and moving from the Evo?

There may not be ICS but this is still a hell of a phone. In the market oyher than the Google phone just coming out this is the top of the line. I came from an Evo and I love it

I think its more because Samsung is not releasing the source code, once they put it out our esteemed devs will bring ICS very fast. HTC is very fast about everything giving out source, update etc. I am just waiting for HTC to come with some phone which is a little bit better in specs and I am getting that. Samsung phones just looks beatifull. I want a phone that works as good and is backed up by support from the Manufacturer.
The fact is the Evo is no longer that great of a phone. It's nowhere near the same league of phone that the GS2 is, ICS withstanding.
Honestly the new Touchwiz isn't that bad. The only people making a big fat fuss over it seem to be previous HTC owners. Let me tell you, sense sucks big fat donkey balls compared to Touchwiz. I was a Go Launcher devotee prior to owning the Epic Touch. Touchwiz has proved to be ok for me.
I would still be completely happy with my day one purchase of Epic Touch even if we don't end up getting ICS until mid next year, gingerbread on this thing still flies compared to every other phone out there.
Furthermore, the OG Epic had a slow but steady dev community. Half the roms I flashed on the evo ended up being kangs or just plain crappy old skins. There were a few really good ones, salvagemod was the best vanilla AOSP. But really, the OG Epic community put out some real quality stuff, albeit at a slower pace.
Honest answer: jump in, the water is fine. Yeah, ICS will be quite nice once we get it, but in the meantime, there isn't a better phone you can get on sprint than the Epic touch.

Develepors here ARE working on ICS. Its all over these boards. There are A LOT of roms being produced. I'm not sure how you missed that... this IS a superphone. I'm not sure how you missed that either. This phone is MUCH simpler to work with than HTC brands. Since you've built roms before, open up a ET4G rom and compare it to the evo4g. You will see what I speak of...

Literally was writing this verbatim! LOL. I'm guessing OP posted without looking anywhere but the EVO forum and this Q and A section or the dozens of ICS threads would have reached out and smacked him in the eye.
Coming from HTC HeroC > LG Optimus S > HTC Evo 4G > HTC Evo 3D to this I was a bit shocked to not see as many devs picking the device up as well. I think everyone is missing what OP is saying and taking it as a bash, it is a surprise that more devs are not migrating towards the E4GT when this is obviously sprint best device to date. This device has the potential to be the next Evo 4G, development wise. It is crazy fast/smooth out of the box. It is also the easiest device I have rooted to date. When I left the Evo 3D for this near launch I did so for the screen size and the Exynos Processor, not for development. Even if no AOSP roms were to come to the device, one of the modified stock roms with Go Launcher on it is all I really need, though I want CM9, lol. That said we now have CM7 in the works, and CM9 will follow soon. Our AOSP devs are leaning more daily, and taking a lot of heat for what they are doing. Even if they are getting help from _______ (fill in blank), they are still taking all they are getting and putting it together for a awesome AOSP type rom. Who else is doing that for the device? Exactly!
But yet some still bash and call them Kang Bangers
I say go for it, find a deal on CL or FleaBay and jump. You will not be disappointed one bit

I definitely agree with you in that the Evo is old news. Which is why I'm considering the upgrade to begin with. It is showing it's age more and more.
Thank you for your input.

Considering how Nice and respectful I have been on this thread, I'm glad that you can understand EXACTLY where I'm coming from. Thank you for the information.
I'm not here to knock sgs2 nor am ragging on the hard working devs. I'm just staying a fact: there aren't very many different kinds of roms here.
And if you look in the Dev section, there are no ics roms to flash. No alphas. No betas. Nothing. I'm sure people are working on it... But there are none there RIGHT NOW.
Some of you need to chill out. I wasn't insulting you or your mom. I was asking a few questions and making an observation. Lighten up trolls.
I'll be picking up one of these this weekend, and aside from rooting and flashing calk's build (that man is amazing), I'm going to be teaching myself how Sammy does it's roms.
Does Sammy not release source code? Aren't they legally required to do this?

I really don't see anyone trolling you here. Looks like a pretty tame thread to me. My comment was probably the "harshest"if you could call it that. My main point was that you stated that no one was working on ICS and I was pointing out that it would be extremely difficult to miss the fact that several devs are in fact working on ICS, MIUI, CM7+9, AOSP and more TW custom ROM's.
I don't think any of us disagree that we wish there we more things going on, but I also think people forget that the EVO dev process was not overnight. Go back to the first EVO posts and you can see that it was several weeks from release before the customization started and a couple months before things really got going. And when the EVO came out, there was zero worthy competition. Pretty much everyone jumped on the EVO train.
I don't think that anyone here is upset by your post, but I do think it discounts the efforts that have been going on for well over a month to get ICS and the other goods to this device.
"There was even a nice leak of the SGS2 ICS Rom and that hasnt been worked on." I think that statement was the one that bothered me because it clearly showed that you were making assumptions without doing any research. And we have enough people in this forum doing plenty of that already. In fact, I have never seen more dev cooperation on any other device. Take a look at the ICS thread from the beginning and you'll see some amazing teamwork. Unfortunately derailed by demanding and entitled community members and leeches, but still alive and kicking in IRC and private spaces.
But I digress, the main point, you probably wouldn't be disappointed by picking up this phone. IMO, it is the best out right now and a quick look around will show you that the number of ROMs is about to hit a stride. The dates of release can show you that new work has just arrived and its beginning to look a lot like EVO-town in here.

Coming from the Evo 4G and writing guides and helping people on those forums for a while, I bought an E4GT.
Compared to the Evo just development wise on XDA, there aren't as many ROMs or as much development going on.
But phone wise, its a great phone and a great upgrade from the Evo 4G. Personally I use Launcher Pro/ADW so slapping that over TouchWiz is great.
Rooting is simple. There are auto roots going on and not as much of a pain as the Evo 4G. Also flashing things like Radios, ROMs, etc are faster as well because of the difference in phone speed and boot speed.
As for ICS, there was something in the works, but I think there hasn't been any much development on it.
To somewhat control the the masses of Jelly bean threads that are currently arising, I made this thread to collect all talk about it.
Anything related to JB belongs in this thread. We don't want hundreds of threads with the same information, so please use this thread instead.
Yes I know I fooled you with the title, but I somehow need to get your attention

So here we have it, the galaxy nexus on JB. Incredibly smooth:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN3EXAFRxKQ , head over to the mini galaxy s 3 and the galaxy nexus comparison that begins at 3:50, you'll see how smooth the Nexus seems to be in comparison to the S3
I've got a question:
We all know the Sense itself is a bit of a power hog, not only the battery, but the interface as well. With all the changes implemented or the possibilities given to the developers with the introduction of Jelly Bean, is it in theory possible that we have an HTC Sense UI running as buttery smooth as the Galaxy Nexus's UI? Or are we all being hyped for nothing?
Even the browser experience on the Galaxy Nexus seems bad ass! If i recall correctly in the video i linked you to, zooms in and out of webpages without even the slightest bit of lag while the phone is loading. Not to mention scrolling on the page, simply incredible. This is something though that should be easily achievable on the One X. I'm just interested in the Sense UI atmm. It is beautiful but at the same time the stuttering gets on my nerves.
So, is the jelly bean RUU out yet for my phone? I really want it and hate that HTC take so long to get updates to us I mean this is the bestest phone in the whole world but HTC really suck by not making it as good as it could or should be in my dreams with the fast updates and the s-off with unlocked bootloader and exquisite camera that compresses too much but the phone is really awesome so can you tell me when the udpate will be on my phone????
just jokes guys/gals,
Thanks to the OP for starting this. As a member on several other forums I cannot believe the amount of crap that gets posted on the one subject but in 74,365 different threads
Even amongst XDA, (must admit I have limited myself to a few specific devices and not strayed too far), I am completely amazed at the people who refuse to search before posting or just blurt out any new thread when it comes to this particular phone. Just take a look at the s-off debacle FFS
Back on topic, I'm actually looking forward to the release of jelly bean for the HOX, fingers crossed we have been able to achieve s-off by then too

I hope it gives us the buttery smooth experience on Sense that we are all believing in and not just a flop.
Haha! If that's indeed the case, than iphone has every reason to continue suing. Cause if anything ever set the iphone and android apart then it was smoothness Vs more possibilities (decent smoothness)
but it will turn out to be smoothness vs smoothness and more possibilies = Fatality.

I was allready thinking on how to drop myself out of the window... This becomes such a standard sadly :/
Maybe XDA should do like on other techi forums, you can't access certain area's without having answered a few tech-based question... This would reduce the amount of "noobs which will never even try to learn/understand something...
Back to topic.
The biggest problem is, that if you see the topic allready has 300+ pages you won't read them all in the hope to find an answer, which may be outdated, the only and best solution (and I'm hoping it will be the case here) would be to update the OP as often as possible with all available information and links

This is a port of Jellybean, based off of the roms for the two nexus devices that were released yesterday. I'm working to add in all of the key features at the moment, and it's going pretty well, so you can probably expect to see some kind of Alpha release fairly soon.
It's based off the porting work done for CM9 for our phone in the topic here, with some help from randomblame in the #cyanogenmod-dev channel. (Thanks!)
Known issues
Wifi
Audio
Camera
Probably more
Ironically, the issue we've been trying to resolve with CM9 for this phone, the rotation bug, appears to be fixed here. Not sure whether to laugh or cry

Update
I've started to port the Galaxy Nexus image instead. The new version is a lot more stable, and I guess I've had a bit of a change of heart with regards to updating. This version is more complete and comes with all of the updated gapps, which means we get all of the awesome stuff that was shown at IO.

Remember to flash the boot.img in the zip.

I had this thought a while back.....
Sense is obviously HTC's standard in-house UI, but they also know that a lot of users would love to be able run the stock android UI.
Given the delay it take to integrate Sense with stock android. Wouldn't it be good of them to release a stock android version for those that would like to use it, whilst they are ironing out the integration issues.
That way if you want to use Jelly Bean sooner you can, or you can wait for the Sense overlay release.

They will never do this. Skinning android with Sense/TW/etc is their form of branding. They do have other options though: http://www.davejunia.com/2012/06/what-android-manufacturers-need-to-do/

That's actually a pretty good idea.... But then they get another excuse to delay the Sense release, which most of us don't care, but that will have all the kernel upgrades and what not, also they would never want to undermine the importance that they are putting on Sense as a marketing item... So let them do their bit of delayed development.... We can in the mean time, head to some ROM that already has the new 4.1 features like the one that I have posted above... If HTC releases something like this then people will start appreciating them rather than *****ing about performance issues as the stock ICS will be by default way smoother than SENSE...

The other benefit is the increase in user base.
IMO HTC phones, as far as build quality, are the best.
Android is often synonymous with the word choice. If HTC gave users the "choice" of being able to run the latest Android UI not long after the new Android UI is introduced, or to run Sense if that's what they prefer, surely they would increase Market Share/User Base.
New update coming soon to HOX? Including 3.1 kernel? New Android Jelly Bean? Dont you guys think that this sounds to good to be real (to be from HTC) :cyclops:

Lolz. Before someone thinks I am trolling..
I was just being sarcastic (/s).
Sorry about that. Thanked everyone who replied.
I LOVE MY ONE X
PS - An actual icecream sandwich wouldn't be too bad. Gotta solve the melting issues though. Jellybean is easier.
Can I ask a dim question? Will branded handsets get Jellybean the same time as non-branded ones, or will we have to wait longer as it goes through network testing?
Does that mean all the issues with current ICS based ROMs on the DZ will be able to be resolved completely?
Or will it just affect the camera related problems?
Also will CM team then release an official DZ release?
I only ask because it seems like the DHD guys are making some progress with HTC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30099204&postcount=731
Cheers guys.
Well IF (and that's a pretty big IF considering that we've had plenty of headway with camera stuff on the DZ/G2 end) they were to actually release for example full sources and such it would probably aid to the camera.
However on the DZ/G2 side we already got the andreno libs and such from them over a week ago, it's... complicated.
and PS: the link you provided isn't what I'd call "progress", until we actually see something from HTC. Remember this is the same company that 'confirmed' on 4 or 5 separate instances that the DesireHD was getting ICS from them and to not worry, only to all the sudden not get it.
I wasn't aware that HTC had released new libraries for the device, hope everyone can put them to good use.
Yeah maybe no official progress but you have to commend them for their effort so far.

It's already incorporated as best as can be into the Andromadus branch that I know of and just bout any rom that kangs off that. (getting it going on JB is still a different story since they're meant for ICS).
What I saw is that the most recent quarterly earning reminded HTC that they actually need to keep their customer happy to get the hard earned money.
Even though I am sure I won't buy HTC again until they show some real commitment to update their devices, keep pressuring the heck out of them is a good idea so just tell me if there's another petition.
i have a tbolt, and as such, i haven't followed the dinc2 dev scene whatsoever. please bear with me.
my g/f's dinc2 is completely stock (unrooted/s-on) at the moment, running the 6.01.605.05 firmware. i'm totally comfortable with rooting it and getting s-off and all that jazz, but i don't really know where to start in terms of roms. there are a crap ton of options!
she's pretty much married to sense. it's all she's ever known. so i'm thinking i better stay away from aosp. that being said, what's the overall frontrunner favorite as far as sense roms go? and just in case i can convince her to ditch sense and go for the lean and mean beauty of aosp, what's the overall frontrunner favorite on that side of the fence?
p.s. i need to stick with stable roms. she won't tolerate any of the typical bugs/quirks one finds with alpha/preview builds, so please no jb. if at all possible, i would love to get her running ics because gb is just painfully outdated at this point, but if the ics builds aren't relatively solid, i'll have to stay away from those too. her exact words were: "if i let you do this to my phone, it better just work damnit!" and "none of this crap where you tell me they just released another update or tweak or some such thing and you have to borrow my phone again to install some new version that has some new feature that i don't even need."
so there you have it. she's not much of a flash-a-holic, hah. hit me with the suggestions, please and thanks!

i have a tbolt, and as such, i haven't followed the dinc2 dev scene whatsoever. please bear with me.

I wouldn't run the leak yet. I'm not sure it can be considered stable. You said she likes sense, so I would recommend Nitsuj17's UKB, which is fairly stable, or one of the rooted "official" versions. It might be hard to come by a copy though, since the hosting server lost all info. I don't know exactly where to point you since I don't use the sense ones. I would suggest trying Condemned Soul's CM7.2 even though it isn't sense based. If you put a nice launcher on there, she may not miss sense as much as you'd expect.
Does she get mad and throw things? If she does just leave her phone alone.
Sense is going to be touchy unless you are good with an older gingerbread based Rom. If your girlfriend gets bothered by anything less than perfection, you best convince her to go AOSP and rock CM7.2.
I think if you hold out for a little bit you'll find some solid ICS roms getting perfected for the sense crowd.

My gnex is starting to piss me off. Kit kat wont run worth a crap(tried 4 roms and kernels) 4.3.is stable...for the first month or so. so ive decided im going back to the basics and would like to try a 4.2.2 that is ran perfect. any recomendations?
Oh my god, why won't "ROM recommendation" threads stop? This must've been the 10th thread of its kind in this month... (although it's about 4.2.2 not 4.4.2, lol)
Experiment yourself, everyone has different use cases and even the same ROM behave differently. For example, I always stick to official CM nightlies no matter the Android version, but people keep saying they lack features / lag / eat battery, etc. while I never felt that way. It's really up to you to decide. Good luck with whatever 4.2.2 ROM out there

yeah thats why i made the thread. i had no issues with figuring out a 4.4.2 rom to try since they are talked about and updated almost daily but since 4.2.2 is so "old" i really didnt know where to begin looking. FAQ had list of roms but i dont think they have been updated so thats the main reason why i created this thread
