Internal Storage space - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

For some reason, I have run out of internal space on my gs3. As far as I know all of my music is on my sd card. I have a 16gb sd card and my phone has 16gb internal storage. I uploaded screen shots of it. It doesn't make sense because the memory doesnt add up. I dont believe I used 16gb of memory.....

Are you running any app2SD apps? I did once and got the same thing. If you are, try uninstalling it and you should be fine.

Not that I know of. I deleted a few things but idk whats taking up all that space. I havent used up all my memory. These are all the apps I have....

Try using a cache cleaner and clear some of your cache to see if that helps

I just downloaded app cache cleaner. Its saying I only have 2.5gb of internal memory. I really need to get to the bottom of whats taking up all this memory

Are you rooted? Have you done any nandroid backups? Check your Clockword or TWRP backup subfolders if you have. Backup files are rather large and it only takes a few to eat up a fair amount of memory.

you can use app cache cleaner you can download.it in play store

I went to recovery and formatted the internal memory. It wiped everything! I wasnt too disappointed that all my stuff was gone but I had to try something. After rebooting the phone I looked and the storage and everything was back to normal. Yes I am rooted. Ive been rooted since the second day I got my phone which was back in september. Cache cleaner did little for me it cleared up only about 1/2gb of memory. As you could see from the previous picture I only used about 2gb of memory. Heres a screenshot of how it is now....

[Q] Apps2SD worth it?

So with 2 gb of storage (is that 2gb on the internal sd? or on the phone?) is APPS2SD worth it? Don't you lose a little speed depending on your card? I'm going with my 16gb class 2 because I wanted more space than my 8gb which is a class 6.
Can someone break down the multi storage?
We got storage on the phone, storage on an internal 'usb' and we got the external sd? how do they work with each other, what holds what for apps, etc.
I don't own one yet. I have to wait until Sunday to get mine for reasons I won't go into here. So I'll answer this as best I can with just my in store observations as I checked this part out thoroughly.
The phone comes with 16gb internal(USB) storage and an SD card slot. Phones with USB storage partition some portion of that USB storage for installing apps and the components of the phones OS. My observation that was of the 16gb internal on the Epic 4G touch, 2GB was in the 'secure' partitioned area for app installation leaving just over 11 GB free in the USB accessible area for putting your own files, camera storage, etc. This tells me that the phone is nabbing ~3GB for the OS and it's internal file system. Of the 2GB in the protected app installation area, there was roughly 1.7GB free.
From Froyo forward the developer had the option adding the ability to move the app to the SD card after you install it. In the case of the 4G touch, I'm not sure if you get the option of picking whether you want to install to the unused(11GB) area of USB storage or to the actual SD card in the microsd slot. I would hope that they give you this option. When you move an app from the internal non accessible app installation area, only a large portion of the app is moved, there is still some portion that remains in this 'protected'(on non rooted phones) app install area, in this example the 2GB partition mentioned earlier.
Eventually even with moving apps to the sd card, this 2gb area will fill up, and not all apps offer the ability to move to the SD card, though more are being updated to add this feature. Though you would have to install a TON of apps(and/or install a lot that don't allow moving to SD card) to fill it.
For example the Epic 4g only has 512MB total ROM for app installation. On my rooted, SRF 1.2(Bloatware removed) Epic 4g before I install apps, I have close to 400MB free in this area. Using the move apps to SD card on all the apps I have that offer it, I have roughly 85 apps installed and still have a little over 100MB free.
Again, your mileage will vary based on the apps and whether they offer to move to SD card. But knowing this and knowing that the 4G touch has 1.7 GB free, you can extrapolate that you will have enough room to install a boatload of apps before space becomes an issue.

Thanks for the great explanation. I had a similar rooted setup on my OG Epic. Almost 100 apps and maintained just over 100mb available.
By the way, when you remove the bloatware that you CAN remove (only like 6 apps) you'll be pretty close to 2gb available. However, I've already added all my apps onto my Epic Touch, and still have 1.47gb available for apps. I see no reason to move anything to SD right now, as I assume it slows down just a tad trying to retrieve the apps from the sd. I imagine as I load some upcoming bigger games, I may find the need, but not right now.
I was just discussing this with a buddy on irc. there is absolutely no reason to have a2sd any more. out of the box my phone had 11.8gb of rom free. no way you are going to install ~12gb of apps on your phone. I just reformatted my 32gb sd card and am only using it for storage now. I love this phone.
I tested before formatting my card and when you do use a2sd it goes to the sd card (internal rom) and not the external sd card. at least how it worked for me.
I was struggling with app space memory on my Evo 4G and moved any app I could find to SD (except for Meridian Player -- widgets will not work if you move the app to SD). On my Galaxy Tab, with 2GB or app space, I've loaded a ****load of apps, most of which are games I never play. I haven't moved a single app to SD and I still have 400MB free, or more free app space that the Evo 4G had out of the box. If you're the kind of person that will download and install any app indiscriminately, you may need to start moving some of them to SD. But for typical use, 2GB basically covers it.
There's always link2sd which moves the app, library files and cache to the ext partition you setup on sdcard.
Great for app junkies like myself and the 700+ apps I currently use on my g2x. Can't wait to test it out on my epic 4g touch tomorrow!
The expression on peoples faces when they try to scroll thru all my phones apps is priceless lol

I will partially agree with this. If you download something like CoPilot or Sygic GPS nav that uses your device to store maps, this measly 11.8GB will evaporate rather quickly.
Those, you'd definitely WANT to move to SD.

How can someone possible use 700+ apps on their phone. On sure over half never even get opened.
Hit me up on gtalk @musclehead84
I just like having everything available and seeing peoples reactions when they scroll thru my phone. Link2sd is bo$$ for that reason since regular apps2sd only fits a fraction of my apps/games.
Btw just got my epic 4g loving it!

[Q] Internal mem. FULL app data files to SD card?

Ok, so I understand the whole 2GB's System Storage & 11.something Internal Storage that somehow make up 16GB right?
I bought a 32 GB micro SD card that is virtualy not even being used by the phone. I have enough space on the 2gb portion for all of my apps, my problem is that whenever I download an app like GTA3, Six Guns, or Modern Warfare it saves all the date files on the 11gb Internal instead of the 32GB micro SD.
This is so dumb, I have already filled the 11gb's with so much app data and I wanted to know if there is a workaround or something, maby disable the 11GB's Internal storage so that I can have 32gbs for all the data dump. Anybody had this problem???
Its very annoying right, I cant get link2sd to work either because of the way this s2 is partitioned. Depending on what ROM or version Android your running you might be able to unmount internal sd in storage options, or maybe try the data bind method thats somewhere in these forums.

Questions about internal storage or lack there of

What apps could I use to monitor my internal storage ? I download a lot of games and since they won't solely rely, or install on the SD card they're taking up space on internal. Though even after uninstalling I'm guessing there is remnants left on internal because usually I'm still having low space issues. Is there an FAQ somewhere with information on how to keep it down ? Any help would be appreciated. I'm updating to latest Cyanogenmod right now, but figured this time around I'd consult you all here and what you're all doing to help out with the minimum space that's available ? Obviously not installing a lot of games would be the better idea. I have 32gigs external and that's just it. I hate that I have all this, but typically using none of it. I do plan to upgrade to the Note II shortly. Though for now I'm still using my Epic and I can say it's still a spiffy phone. Thanks for any help guys/gals.
You could do a data wipe/factory reset. That will wipe your data partition where you app data is. Use Titanium backup to backup the apps you want and care about first. Sometimes only backing up what you use and doing a data wipe is a great way to "start fresh". I do that every once and a while. I usually find out that I have several apps that I wasn't using and don't miss. Other than that, it's SD for the rest as we don't have a ton of space.

[Q] anything like HBOOT to repartition internal memory?

Hi!
As I understand the Xperia S has a huge internal memory of 32GB, but this is parted into two partitions: One for Apps (known as /data on my HTC Desire) and one for all kinds of user data (/sdcard).
Right?
I know I can move most parts of most apps to /sdcard with internal functions. But not all apps.
So I would like to have more space for apps - is there anything like HBOOT / http://alpharev.nl to repartition the internal memory for the XS? Anything to make the app partition e.g. 5GB instead of 2GB?
Or: Is there any custom rom which uses the whole internal memory at once with no extra partition mounted to /sdcard? As I understand, this is the way google wants to handle this in ICS. One big internal memory for all purposes.
First, there is a SD card, a data one, a system one, a cache one, boot and maybe some obscure ones. Second, as I'm aware, no known way to increase it. And you don't need a huge partition. You can have a hell lot of apps with 2 GB. The data goes to SD card anyway.

to be honest, I am not sure about this.
At the moment I have a Desire with /data 1,5GB (via ext4 partition). I have only 200MB(!) left!
I have no big games on the phones. Some apps are moved to sd, additional. And there are no many big ones on my phone.
e.g. Facebook has 50MB and cannot be moved. G+ 30MB and I want to use the widget, so it is not moved. Amazon App Shop 30MB, cannot be moved. wetter.com 20MB and this is after moving!
And these are all of the huge apps on my Desire with only 200MB free. the other apps are odds and ends.
So, projected to the XS I would have 700MB free in the moment. And there are many apps I had to delete on my Desire and I want do install them. e.g. the Simpsons game 100MB and cannot be moved ...
/data 233MB free of 1511MB:
/data/app 426MB
/data/dalvik-cache 387MB
/data/data 300MB
/data/app_s 97MB
I, sometimes get to go through my apps list, I look at each one of them, and think: Do I really need this app? I can't uninstall it and download when I need it again?
It may help you.

hm, this sounds like shortage management. And when I by a new phone I do not want to do shortage management, particularly on a phone with 32GB.

But seriously: my smartphone is my digital Swiss army knife. I do not want to think about "do I need this app the next week?" And even worse "there was an app long time ago which would help me now, but which one from the bunch of similar named app was the one?"

dont know if this is what youre looking for:
well for storage you have 2gig phone memory and 25.80 internal memory,
all of the apps installed on your phone if you didnt move to sd will go to the phone memory which is 2gig,
all of the datas, obb files,pictures,movies,etc.. will be loaded on internal memory,
so the 2gig memory on your phone will be big enough for all your apps, meaning only the .apk files are stored on phone memory
and not the data.

Internal storage gone!

just installed the new rom, CivZ-FLEXBEAM-4.2.2-REV3.0-N5110-MH3. Factory reset, wiped cache, wiped the advanced Davld something.
Got into system, without installing anything yet, and here's the internal storage!
It's a 16Gb version yet it only shows maximum of 9.87Gb, and only about 2Gb free space available!
Could anyone please help?

That, to the best of my knowledge, is normal. Mine shows the same. Large portions of the drive are walled off for System files and the like in 4.2.2. I read where a very similar situation exists for the SGS4. Not sure exactly why this is but until someone devises a method of safely re-partitioning the internal (same happened with one of the versions of Nook Color Tablet) we'll have to watch the available space and use uSD as much as possible.
Sucks doesn't it?
yeah, it's always been like that. one of the biggest complaints was about the amount storage available on the 16gb drive.

I do wonder if some android guru might be able to figure out a method of safely re-partitioning to reclaim some space? That's what happened a while back when the Nook Tablet was released. Of course, it was due to BN reserving space for downloaded content and not system files. Just hard to believe 4.2.2 "needs" that much space to operate. On my N7 4.3 System only takes up 5.7MB.
But it IS a different device I suppose.
if you get an aosp rom, they're still around 200-300MB. it's all the touchwiz stuff that inflates the roms, but some of that touchwiz stuff is why we got the tablet in the first place. but still, reserving 6GB for the system partition seems a bit overkill to me. if i could get a full functioning spen and multiwindows in cm i'd switch.
There has to be something wrong. My free space is not that low, and I have more space taken up by apps. I'm using the stock rom firmware though.
I'm not sure how to post captures here. But I have 2.13gb of applications and 6.47gb free.
Not sure if this will work, but here is mine.
Your graph of the used storage space is also smaller than mine.
darn, i didn't notice that you meant the free space was wacky. try backing up everything to the sd card and then formatting the data partition. or worst case just wipe and start fresh.
Dang! It just hit me! I have like 4 GB in backups in CWM on the internal. Am moving them to uSD pronto!
Check yours.
That did it. Added 4.5GB to internal.
