All,
I have a question regarding what kernels are 'compatible' with various versions of CWM. The reason I ask is because the CWM threads I see are usually bundled with a specific kernel, and without finding specific info about that, I'm led to assume that there's a dependency there.
Until yesterday I was running Bubby's stock rooted kernel. FWIW this is my 'upgrade' path:
Zedo V3(Bad LOS) -> Bubby's stock pulled EB30 with root retained - Great performance, maybe 3 instances of LOS in the 2 months that I've been running it.
Perusing the dev section I saw that NoCIQ was available but required CWM to flash. A search for CWM yielded a few threads. Wanting to have a rooted, and not stock kernel, I settled on the LostKernel/CWM5 package. After a few hiccups getting back to no yellow triangle, etc. Things seemed to be running fine. And they still are...mostly.
The one difference is that on my way in to work this morning - I ride train that passes through several 3g/4g coverage areas so it will switch back and forth between them periodically, including a tunnel where ALL service is temporarily lost.
I noticed that when going through a small area where there is no data coverage at all(this is typical), that when I got back into a coverage area that I had complete LOS! Toggling airplane mode brought data back but to regain cell service I had to reboot my phone.
This is, again, after 2 months with virtually no LOS, travelling the same route every day. One instance is not a reason to panic but having it the first day of using a kernel that's supposed to reduce LOS has me a little concerned.
Now to the point of my babbling. What I want to know is if I would be able to put Bubby's kernel back onto my phone and still have it be compatible with the CWM5 that was installed via chris's lostkernel package?
Thanks in advance for any help.
The kernel consists of a linux kernel + an initramfs (which is basically an initial filesystem but mapped to cache memory, so technically part of the kernel)
On Samsung, the same kernel+initramfs is used for both Android and Recovery.
kernal+initramfs is what people around here call a zImage. When you flash a kernel/zImage, you get whatever recovery came in the initramfs of that kernel/zImage.
So CWM is not necessarily tied to a particular version of the kernel, you can match different versions of CWM with different kernels. However kernels (as the term is used for Samsung phones) do come bundled with a particular recovery, so you flash the kernel you get that recovery, whether that be stock or some version of CWM.
CWM/kernel
Heya.
Lostkernel is from source. Thus it will reduce your LOS but notget rid of it. Sofar for me the only kernel with CWM that is from a stock pulled kernel that has no LOS so far for me is chris41g pulled/CWM. Sorry for not adding link but just look in development and you should see it.
Also this is the Dev.section, you should post your questions in Q&A.
Hope this helps ya.

A great recommendation. Chris's stock repacked kernels with CWM5 have been performed well for me

Apologies for wrong section, I guess since I thought it was dev related it was appropriate, duly noted for future reference and mods feel free to move if necessary.

yes that's it. Are u on ek02 or eg30? U could still use ek02 so yes that is the stock kernel with cwm. U can also over clock the stock kernel with an app called tegrak. It is a paid app in the market. I highly recommend it for overclocking stock kernels.

maybe i missed it but why do kernels have to overwrite recovery?
just seems like recovery should be untouched by anything except flashing a stock kernel or another recovery.
Yes thats the link.
He also has the same kernel with ACS recovery, I highly recomend the ACS recovery, there are a couple extra goodies in it such as pre ROM flash wipe and pre theme flash wipe, but has the same functions as CWM recovery.
Hey but as you can see I still have no thanks yet, even though every post I have done has been ta answer questions that I have had myself and read many posts to find a answer or solution.
So If I did help ya plz hit the thanks button. Sorry tasound soo desperate for a thanks but just one would make my year.LOL.

Hey thanks Chris I luv ACS stuff. The best on XDA for the et4g.
Thanks for the responses all, certainly clears things up and gives me solace that I can swap kernels if needed.
To clarify, do I need to install the EK02 update before I flash the EK02 kernel?
Also, the EK02 update is not released yet, correct?

It's a Samsung architecture thing - kernels don't overwrite recovery, they INCLUDE recovery within the initramfs. Change the initramfs, you change the included recovery.
On other devices (including Snapdragon-based Samsungs and Tegra-based Samsungs), there is a separate recovery partition/image that has its own kernel, but not Exynos/Hummingbird based devices.

Nobody is 'ok', if you read the first few posts, you'll see that I get 'reprimanded' point made, and taken. Now besides that does that mean that the thread can't be responded to and the help given? Does that make the thread non worthy of a response? I'd move it if I could. Should I go create the same thread in Q&A and start over?

I can't believe more people aren't recommending it. Anyhow, got a thanks from me for the same reason. Chris, I am wondering if people are hesitating because they think they wont get the same performance as they do on your stock repacked with CWM5. The performance is as good with the great recovery

EK02 modem/kernel
No youdo not have to flash the EK02 update to flash the kernel. You can flash the kernel first. Actually you can flash in any order. Kernel/modem/update. I sofar have EK02 kernel and modem installed but have not flashed the ROM update yet.
Also this is not a official release from sammy yet. But have it from good sources that this will be the final build they will release soon.

Hey everyone, this is my first post... I've read through the entire Juggs ROM post in the development section of XDA, but I can't find anywhere why he doesn't include the newest modem in 4.1... Anyone have any idea why not?

I can try to find the exact reason, but I know flashing a modem with a rom has the chance of flashing incorrectly and going horribly wrong. Hence why the method is to just be safe and do it via odin. I will edit this post soon enough with the actual reason as well.

hello guys,
I'm new to the XDA forums and a bit of a noob. I have a rogers S3 and I'm currently running the latest CM 10.1 nightly from today. I love cyanogenmod and really want to try out a custom kernel for a better combo. I'm having trouble finding clear info on custom kernels available and compatible with my device and rom. I was very interested in the KT747 kernel by ktoonsez because of all the governors, schedulers, oc and uv options, etc. I don't know if that is compatible with cm10.1 and if it is where I can find the right version....I tried searching the forums to no avail so decided to start a new thread. Somebody please help steer me in the right direction.
Im pretty sure I saw people on rogers and people on cm10 using it. You can go to his thread and just search for cm10 rogers. I'm sure you'll find some info unless someone who knows for sure can answer you.
Or try posting the question in his thread....if you haven't already

Thank you. Is there anyway you could post the link where I can get the kernel. I don't want to be one of those annoying people, but I really have no idea where to find the right version of kt747 that will be compatible and what version I even need. Thank in advance.

I'm still a bit confused because when I go to that thread, there are 3 downloads available. AOSP version for ICS and JB 4.1, and there is a third one that says JB 4.2 but it doesn't specify whether or not it is touchwiz or AOSP. I'm running CM10,1 which is android 4.2.2, so I do I download the JB 4.2 file?? I'm sorry to be annoying I just don't want to screw up my phone so I want to be clear before I do it. Thank you in advance.

I'm currently running stock 4.3 that has been rooted. I'm looking for a Kernel to flash that will eliminate some of the lag and not completely destroy the Note II's battery life. I appreciate any and all recommendations.

Not too many choices
Agni pureSTOCK or Devil2-2.3.2 t0lte dual. 20140102
Honestly, you're going to have to try them and see how your phone reacts. Some people's phone just go ape sh*t using Devils kernel, some take it well.
Nobody's phone is the same, yet everyone expects them to act the same. No one has the exact same apps, same kernel, same bootloader, etc etc. Yet, they come unglued when something does not work.
At this moment in time I am running [ROM][4.3][Dec-2013] AT&T I317-UCUBMK6/MJ4 *Stock* Rooted Odex/De-Odex/Odin. With my apps and a couple of other build.props tweaks.
This came out recently (Devil2-2.3.2 t0lte dual. 20140102) so I'm trying it now.
I think Agni pureSTOCK is at v3.9.3. It's under Version Note II but I thought I read it works for ATT NOTE II also. Which I assume you have since that's where you posted the question.
I'm going to test that also. It takes a couple of days for the phone to settle in, so it would be unfair to flash a kernel and expect miracles. So a good practice is have the stock as backup to flash it the custom kernel barfs.

I suggest that you find the best suitable ROM (for you) and then ask whether perseus kernel works. Also mention what feature in perseus that you are looking for so that people can suggest alternates if perseus doesn't work
Otherwise its an open ended question and its unlikely that you will get the answer that you are loking for.
