[Novice] Question about wiping?? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So when i flash any ROMs i always do the instructed wiping before anything else but I've come across some ROMs that instruct that you wipe the system? What gets erased when you do so?

The system folder. Use es file explorer and go up to root directory to see for yourself. It has apps, data and many other things.

So it pretty much keeps record/history of everything you do/install while in recovery mode?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app

Okay I see what your taking about now. So how do I wipe system when I'm in recovery?

flashing a new rom wipes system. not sure why they would be asking you to specifically wipe that.

Flashing Frosty JB

Hey, im kinda new to flashing and rooting. I did manage to root my T999V and i want to flash frosty jb but have no idea how. The instructions on the thread for it are kind of unclear for me so can someone please give me a really easy way of doing this?

Youll find a better definition if you google it, but basically all your apps run in a virtual machine type environment called the dalvik vm.
dalvik cache is where the apps code is stored and used by the vm.

To use the ota patch you'd have odin back to stock LH2. But if you're gonna do that just Odin the LJ4 fw.

That doesn't even do it. Just user data. Still has any kernel/ROM/system mods.
Clean slate would be to flash stock ROM using Odin.

Does this happen every time? Or just that one time?
If you could, boot into TWRP, make a nandroid, do a factory reset. If it works, then it was [probably] a little glitch. If it doesn't work, go into the advance menu and copy the recovery log to the sdcard. After that upload it here. That'll help a lot. Also, you know, if it did work and wipes your data then you'll probably want to restore your nandroid.

Wow, um, let's see; you could try to redo the data partition. I don't know that that'll fix anything though. Plus it would wipe everything in /data including your internal sdcard ( /data/media). I've never seen or heard of anything like this. You could also talk to Dees_troy (sorry if I'm spelling that wrong), he did make TWRP.

All I can say is just flash another recovery.. And then if you want try to flash TWRP again. That should solve the problem.

How did you download and flash the recovery? On your phone through goomanager because it could be a bad download.

Cleaning up SD card after multiple flashes?

I've flashed dozens of roms in the last month & for some reason cwm (I think this is the culprit) creates all these 0/ folders & it's really annoying. Now all ym downloads, music & apks are ALL over the place. Is there a fix for this? Or is there something I'm doing wrong? Please help.

Its not CWM, its 4.2+ roms, they partition your sdcard and store everything in /0 rather than in /

Make it fresh and format it and install everything you need or want on it. That way you know what you have installed.

Flashing back to stock

If I flash a backup back to stock, will I have to do anything special? Or will I just be rooted and unlocked on a stock ROM? Will I still be able to use Epics camera mod? Etc.

If you made a backup of a custom stock ROM, like Optimus, Nexogen, etc., you'll be fine. Nothing to worry about.

Before. So if you go back and forth between. CM, AOKP, Stock, etc make sure you wipe everything but internal SD. And use TWRP 2.5.0.0 in my opinion.

Actually, i would recommend also formatting internal storage. Just because partitions are different from android 4.2+. Just to avoid future headaches. Just my .02.

@engine95 one last question bro...I keep hearing different things but I'll ask you O Wise LGOG Guru.. If I backed up my EFS before I flashed a custom ROM and that was the ONLY backed up EFS, I would be fine flashing that back up now since I'm on the original ROM it was backed up from.. Right?

I'm not the guru. I just get lucky. As for EFS... autoprime has that area.
But from what I know, and from what I've done.... you should be just fine. I've done it even on nexogen, and OpTimuS with no problems.
People are modding their phone so much to get kk to run it , that it's creating alot if problems IMHO.

Yup.
If everything on your phone is as it was when you created your EFS backups, you'll have no problems.
Be just be aware that even that backup may not save our butts. As we all know these phones can be picky.

LGNPST is the only other way.
FreeGee's files should be in root of your SD under freegee. If you backed them up to your computer or cloud, just copy it back to root.
The problem was that stupid 0 folder. I moved the files from the 0 folder to the other freegee folder at the root of my storage and voila..."your efs has been restored up"
