Hello all,
Been with iPhones for 5 years and finally made the leap to my frist Android, that being the SIII.
I love visual voicemail and learned that it doesn't come installed on the droid OS so I downloaded the app, AT&T Visual Voicemail.
I noticed if someone leaves me a voicemail, there is no icon that indicates the number of messages I have waiting (like the iPhone does) which is an issue because if I don't manually check it, I could have messages on there that are days old. I've explored the app to see if it's a setting but can't find one. I also looked into other visual voicemails but don't see that any offer this feature either. Am I missing something here or does this not exist on droid phones?
Thanks in advance and this forum looks awesome!
Download Google voice and set it as the default voicemail number. This phone won't let you automatically set it up, you'll need to go into call settings and change the forwarding options, but its not hard. You can set up a widget on your homescreen that not only shows you the voicemails that you have, it will also transcribe them. But the transcriptions are usually hysterically wrong.

Thanks Harlenm but I can't do that as I use my Google voice number for a real estate business and I get a million calls to my GV so I cannot distinguish personal from business doing it as the way your suggesting it. Just not possible as I need my numbers and vm's separately. Very disappointing that this is such an operation for something so simple.
Thanks again though!

I want to have my voicemail just use a standard greeting listing my phone number. Something like all the other carriers have... "You have reached the voice mailbox of 555-555-5555, at the tone please leave a message..."
I can't find any way to do this from the Evo. The voicemail system doesn't seem to offer this as an option but rather forces you to speak a greeting and name.
I called Sprint and the girl seemed confused and thought I should be able to but was of no help.
Can I set me greeting this way?

Mine has been that way since I joined Sprint, I never added a personal greeting.
Go to your voicemail, choose to administer your voicemail, enter 3, then 5, just keep following the directions to use the standard greetings, basically it will be 3 and then 5 again.
HTH
no luck. still no option for a standard greeting. I got it down to just my recorded name but thats all i can find.

When it ask for your name......Dont speak
It will have callers at the edge of their seats
I had the same problem. It really bugged me. But then I figured it out. Just go back in and delete your vmail recording and it will default to the automated one.
The voicemail that your accessing on your evo is no different than any other voicemail besides the VVM portion. theres an option, your not trying hard enough, read your manual.

Sprint dialed into my voicemail with me and couldn't figure it out either. She suggested that I speak my number to mimic the default greeting... The same thing happened to me when I had the Hero.

Thanks. Deleting everything worked.
There is no option during setup or in the menus and I believe during initial setup the problem is that it doesn't accept no for an answer when asking you to record your name and greeting.
Thanks again.

I believe the problem is on Sprint+Android devices
I believe the problem with the vm greeting has something to do with
Sprints Android habdsets. My Tour would greet callers with my # but my
Hero would force me to record a greeting. My Touch Pro2 greeted callers
With my # but now my EVO insists I record a geeeting.
So I just picked up my first EVO yesterday. Rooted running fresh, nice.
I installed the same version of Google voice on here, as is on my Hero, however the EVO doesn't give me the option to 'make' calls. And in the set up, it took over my messaging app. I can't even change the options on messaging. Anyone know why its so limited and controlling on the EVO?

To switch back you need to go online I believe as far as the messaging. Also try seeing uf there is a update for GV, cause in mine there is a setting to ask everytime, or to just use one or the other.

Open Google Voice > Settings > Making Calls > Use Google Voice to make all calls or Ask every time I make a call
Is this what you're talking about or am I misreading?
Did you port your sprint number to be your google voice number?

I think I did that is there any way to fix it
It seems you have integrated your GV with Sprint. You need to go in your GV account online and disable integration and remove your GV account from the app. Then you need to setup GV again, this time, press "skip" the first time you get the choice to skip while setting up and setup GV the regular way without integrating.

Fear of apple has made Samsung remove the Google search function that can search on contacts on the phone. However you can reinstall it yourself. Do a search for. 'universal Google search.'
The universal Google Voice can call and text as well as do lots of other things.
If you mean the Samsung S-Voice it can dial and text with the universal goggle search.
Also you install Google Now but again it can't directly text or call but can bring up the contact with the right app.

I have to correct myself on my last post. Google Now can do mail, phone calls and texts. I was using the wrong word or phrase. I would say text so-and-so and it would give me a list of the person's contact numbers. text or send text both work the same. It can invoke the gmail program simarly.
Saying dial or call so-and so work number makes it call out. You can also state a numeric number.
It seems to not have some rather short attention span for body of the messages and unless you can get it in to the initial search it doesn't ask you what you want to send, which S-Voice does.

To get Google voice to work you must first download it from the play store. Then run it. It will tell you that it can't change your forward numbers. The go on your browser and goto the Google voice website (make sure you hit menu and request desktop site). On the site look for settings. (Somewhere in the top right. Then choose to set up your phone. Choose your carrier and it will give you a number to call. That number will change your forwarding numbers for you. Then in the voice app change settings to show voicemail in call log.

FYI.., mine is an At&t Galaxy S3
I have a couple questions about GV. Installed the GV app on my grand daughters tablet (wifi only, no phone). Used her mothers cell# to get her GV number. I unchecked the cell number, so all calls go to Google Chat.
1. I can text, no problem. Question here, is there a way to empty trash from the GV app? I know I can on a PC, but can I only open trash in the app, is there no way to delete, not even one at a time?
2. I assumed if I called her new GV#, set to "Do not Disturb", the call would go to her Google Voicemail. Well, it rang 6 times and went to the mother's cell voicemail (with that box not checked). Is there a way to use the GV number for just leaving a voicemail (to be transcribed to gmail)? I don't want to mess with the mother's cell or that voicemail.
Sadly there is no way to delete/empty trash from the app, but creating a shortcut to her (request desktop site) Gvoice trash from a browser is the easiest way to go about it. Just delete her moms number so that Google Chat is the only option under "forward calls to"

Actually, for deleting the conversations, 1 by 1,get to the main screen in voice, that lists all your conversations, long press what one you want to delete, it'll give a list, delete being in there. Also, from each conversation, there's a trash button on top left. At least, this is how it works on mine. Lemme know if I can help any other way

No problem deleting one at a time, question is "emptying the trash". Seems you need to do that on a PC (and it's not that easy to find there). You can get to trash, but all you can do is "undelete it" from android, no "empty".

Same here, wondering if there is a way to delete whats in the trash from mobile device with out manipulating a clumsy desktop version on a touch screen!
Seems like this one would be a no brainer for the developer to have built in as a must have.... Really, who wants to delete things 2 or three times. Im sure it has caught many ppl off guard, thinking their communications were gone when their really just sitting right there under another label.

You know if you install Sipdroid along with GV you can make and recieve free wifi calls on the N7?
Sure, I bought Groove IP for 2 bucks a while back and works great on my N7. I didn't want my grand daughter making calls (unless her parents wanted her to). Just want texting to work, and it does.

I'm looking for an app that allows me to blacklist callers, ideally play a disconnect message or just reject the call. There's a ton of apps out there like that, I was looking for some feedback from people have used apps they like. Thanks!

Private SMS and call from the playstore
Thanks for the suggestion third son seeing as it's the only one I guess I'll try that
i use
Call Guard
no complaints with it so far.
I use Root Call Blocker Pro.
Allows me to either blacklist or whitelist contacts, specific numbers, numbers from certain area codes, or unknown callers. I can reject calls and send to voicemail or ring once and hang up without sending to voicemail. No complaints so far. It can block sms too, haven't tried it. There's a hidden mode where you can launch the app by entering a code in the dialer

I love and use "You Mail". Its free... It's an answering service... You can customize your greetings.... And ditch calls... Next time that number calls your phone they are greeted with "DA DA da, the number you have reached is no longer in service.. Gotta love it...

+1 on Youmail and ditching callers.
I like Mr. Number. It does all the things you're looking for and it's also free.
