I personally think stock is filled with a bunch of nonsense that I never used. I am absolutely in love with jellybean and I'm never turning back. For a fresh install I just use el26.

Yes I always keep a stock 1 click on my laptop to update prl and profile then get gps lock. It also cane in handy when I installed a bad zip and my nandroid was corrupted. I only had about 5 minutes before I had to leave the house to gwt the phone back up and ran stock all day that day.

I stay on stock rooted, its safest, great battery life and I still have 4g

Constant FC - Can't even make a call after going from eh17 back to ec05

I updated my stock-rooted ec05 to eh17 recently just to try out gingerbread, but it kept rebooting on me, so I tried last night to go back to ec05. I had downloaded the latest odin, I already had drivers installed, I even had another ec05 zip file with cwm 3.1.0.1 built in, and I had dg27.tar as an old standby. After many, many, many, many, many attempts, I finally managed to get the right combination of pit, tar, cable and usb port to get the old dg27 installed. It seemed to work ok, but seemed a bit slow. I did an upgrade to the latest ec05 using the built-in update tools. It was a 99mb download/update and it went fine. Then I re-rooted it with cwm 3.02.5 and updated to 3.1.0.1, but the actual phone part is just crap. It boots up ok, but then just FREEZES. It doesn't matter if I have the sd card installed or not, I can barely launch programs, I couldn't even make a phone call...the PHONE app fc'd on me... wtf??? the PHONE app fc'd on me... I can't even use my smartPHONE as a PHONE!!!! And I'm getting completely fed up with how slow it is and how it fc's 98% of the time and takes 10x's longer to do anything even when it does work. Thing is, my internet connection is only 512kb/s downstream...yes, that's only 512KB/s...so I can't just go around downloading .tar files everywhere trying each one until i find one that works. Plus, I knew the official gingerbread release is just around the corner, so I wanted to be back to stock for it. But I can't get this damn thing working to save my life and it's pissing me off to no end...I've wiped the cache and davlik cache so many times, it's not even funny. I don't want to just do a factory reset, because I have 18,000 txt msgs that takes an hour to restore and I have visual voicemail that I use and have tons of those saved and that requires using root access to copy the folder where the data and audio files are stored in the root in order to back it up.... so it's a pain each time I want to start over...
Anyone have any bright ideas? please???

I can't think of anything to do but reload. I would back up my sdcard. Wipe everything 3x. Reformat the sdcard. Install Deca's Deodexed EH17 twice in a row without rebooting and see if that works for you. I have been using it with no problems. If you are set on EC05 than Odin EC05 instead. I would not go to DG27 and then up to EC05. Just go straight to EC05.
@crawrj, I'm serious man, GB is shifting the partions around some how, and not getting fixed when going back to froyo.
A lot of EH17 data is not compatible with EC05 that is why you are having so many FCs. A factory data reset is your best bet to get your stability back. Restore only data that you absolutely have to have. I had a buzzing in EG22 today from a EH17 downgrade that I couldn't find so did a reset myself today. But my phone is superfast and smooth again with no errors, so totally worth it. Restore your texts when you go to bed and will be done when you wake.

Not sure what that could be. I went from EF02 back to EC05 without any problems. I went back to Gingerbread on EG22 and have been here since.

Its random when it errors out but when it does, it can be bad to the point of having to Odin. Sometimes flashing a Froyo ROM fresh fixes it but sometimes it doesn't. I can't explain why it doesn't happen every time but I have been flashing 2 to 3 ROMs a day the past week and about 25% of the time, if I don't Odin, it can't be resolved

Yup, something was changed in that EH17. I have to redo my email accounts rather than restore the accounts and data.
I been going back and forth between GB and Froya. everytime i go up and down i use odin. if you want to make sure that your phone goes back to the manufactory settings then you need to have (Phone EFS Clear) checked. that will bring back everything to the first day you bought your phone then you can start again with whatever you want.
as far as backup up the files, first root your phone and go to 4shared.com and download (my backup pro .apk) this will allow you to backup and restore everything you have at one shot.
i hope any of that help
If you wipe everything 3x, reflash a ROM and reboot, it will usually (but not always) eliminate the problem. Then wipe everything 3x and restore a nandroid. You should be good. If it doesn't work after a clean ROM install then Odin is necessary

I ran into a similar issue, went from EH06 back to my daily driver EC05 that I had a nandroid of. wound up having to wipe everything, do the full EC05 rom install, kernel flash, and then run the restore to get it to boot. Not sure what the deal there was, but still got it working.
I recently jumped back to EC05, I just wiped 3x, flashed my ROM and then restored my APKs (never the data) brought back my call log, sms, mms, alarms and dictionary and have had no issues.
I tried, Bamboozle (EF02), Go Green (EG22), Osprey (EG22), Hawk v1 and 2 (EG22) and Vendetta (EH17)
I got tired of the rebooting in the leaks, I like being back to like 3-4 days on my ext battery with midNight 5.3
10/10 sat in GPS with 2.6m acc (using EH17 modem too)
Is Midnight EXT 4 based? I'm still on Stock EC05 RFS, but wondering if flashing the EH17 modem would be better...not all that impressed with the EC05 modem.

This +1
For me the EH17 modem has been the best I have used... but as with everything YMMV!!
I do agree that the EH17 modem is good, but the GB ROM that comes with it is broken. I got a lot of FC all over the place out of nowhere with the ROM. Since then, I've changed the ROM but kept the Modem and things are running much smoother.
GB leaks have many issues still and I think its still wrong to make them the everyday driver, in addition to that, we are not getting much benefit on having GB right now, many apps that were GB only are running perfectly fine on Froyo... My suggestion is, test the leaks if your feeling adventurous but expect issues.

Wife's epic is freezing

The wife did an Ota upgrade to Gingerbread battery sucked, so I did a factory reset. It was working OK for a couple of weeks until yesterday. It freezes about 20 times a day. It's stock and it just started happening yesterday.
I'm thinking of just rooting it and flashing cleanGB.
Any chance this is a hardware problem and would be dangerous to flash at this point?

Try to pin point exactly what you was doing when this first happened. Such as what apps you've installed. Got this tip from a fellow XDA member. Might help! If it is an app causing this issue, then just un-install it.
Question...was your wife's Epic stock before you did the OTA?
I don't think it's a hardware issue. You should be ok if you reset the phone bringing it back to a good working state then root, flash ACS recovery or clock work, flash a clean GB Rom ei22 based, or a rom of your choice.
Also, try rooting and installing cwm. Do a full backup, then wipe the cache 3x. If this doesn't make stable, do a full titanium backup and flash cleangb. You can then restore missing apps and data. Careful not to do a full restore, cause you will get the bloat that is removed like ciq.

To determine if it is hardware or software you can try either flashing a custom ROM and see if that helps or Odin back to EC05 and let it OTA again in case something didn't go right with the update.
Hi Guys, thanks for the relies.
Yes the phone was and still is completely stock.
My intention was to root and put cleanGB, but I didn't have enough time last night because I ran into problems with the usb not being recognized w/ my laptop.
I ended up trying to root the phone with QBking77 Youtube tutuorial for the EI22 based phones, but ran into a problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE&feature=relmfu
It verified the file kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5 put failed to flash it. I ran out of time and didn't get a chance to use another cable.
I ended up just a stock factory wipe. It's not freezing anymore.

GPS After ICS Upgrade

After upgrading from gingerbread on my phone, GPS doesn't work at all. I didn't know at the time that I had to leave the GPS locked in GB before the flash to get it to work. My question is, since flashing back to the "StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5" makes the phone not boot, I can't just go back into GB, get lock, then go out. Does anyone know what I else I can flash to get a bootable phone that I can get GPS lock on?
By the way, I had family here this weekend and two of them also have E4GT, so I did an experiment. I upgraded those two phones to ICS with GPS locked ahead of time, and both worked fine. However, there's definitely a difference in these phones that were purchased at the same time. One of them got lock within 10 second when I sat inside at the kitchen table. The other one could never lock here. Both locked outside though.I repeated this experiment several times, and it was consistent.
The safe thing would be to Odin back to EL29 and start over. I'm using stock FE22 and there is no problems with anything.
Most ROMs require you to ODIN back to Stock-Rooted-EL29 -> Get the GPS lock -> ODIN to Stock-CWM-EL26 -> Hold the volume up key while booting to get into CWM -> Clear data, wipe cache & Dalvik -> Flash your ICS ROM of choice (and Google Apps, for Maps) -> Go into Maps and see if you get a lock.
Make sure you flash back to Stock-Rooted-EL29. This is essential because it restores all of the stock settings before modification.

So it isn't necessary to ODIN to el26+CWM if I ODIN el29+CWM?
Ok get back to a GB rom either by sfhub odin or odin el26 kernel and restore an old GB rom get a lock and leave gps on then restore or install an ICS rom...
Had same problem with cm9. Downloaded agps from market, cleared GPS from the tools menu, let it run until it got a bunch of locks, then uninstalled it and my GPS has been spot on ever since

Can I use the method in the link below to get a GPS lock, then revert back to my running ROM (AOKP)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683481

Phone acting craaaaazzzy

So i recently went to AOKP. All was fine for a few days but then i started getting random reboots. In fact, it wouldn't let me even shut the device down. I would pull the battery, put it back in like 30 minutes later, and it would immediately boot back up. I didn't even hit the power button! I odined back to FF18 stock and it still does random reboots and wont shut down. When i hit the power button, the screen does not go to sleep. I even went as far as going back to EL29 and still no luck. Any thoughts?
When you went back to FF18, did you factory reset+ caulkin's format all? What are the steps you took to flash those roms? Is the rom bare stock when the problems occur or is it after you add your own apps?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Is this the stock battery? If not put it back in, I had some issues with an aftermarket battery and switching back to stock fixed the issues.

I always wipe everything when flashing new ROMs. With the exception of AOKP where you are not supposed to wipe system. I think this was just a fluke. After several hours of battery pulling, flashing ROMs and charging and discharging, all seems to be well. It may have been an issue with my battery but idk. It has been running stable for a couple of hours now. Thank you for your responses

Who told you are not supposed to wipe the system? You're not supposed to use the Factory Reset options while on ICS since they use unsafe recoveries. When using recoveries like TWRP and agat's, they have been labled as safe. That is what mostly like your problem. Your safest route would be to EL26 Kernal, factory reset+wipe cache and dalvik cache, caulkin's format all+ rom then gapps.

Issues with Epic 4G Touch ICS

Okay so my sister updated her epic a few days ago, and has been having nonstop problems with the ICS build FF18 there are just so many bugs in this and wondering if there is anything she can do without wiping her data on the phone.
She has two options. After ROOTING and flashing a custom recovery, she can either:
1. Backup all the data she wants: apps, sms, system settings, home screen layout and call log.She can use ROM Toolbox, My Backup Root or Titanium Backup. Those are the best. I personally recommend ROM Toolbox, but My Backup Root can backup sms and call logs.
After that she can flash any ROM she wants and then restore the data of all the apps.
2. She can try to format system only and then flash any ROM she wants. This is the easiest way but it is very risky to do it.
The first method is the most recommended. It is always recommended to flash a clean install.
Hope this helps. You can find all the links you want for Rooting and Flashing in the Android Development section.

About the only option you would have then is using Kies to backup, wipe the phone with a factory reset and restore through Kies.
If you have been reading through the threads, then you should know that the brick bug is still a major concern with the latest ota.
But you really don't have any other option if you're not going to root.

I don't blame her. It's no longer a great or even good phone for the majority of people. Even with custom roms and customizations I get about half the performance. They should have never released this update to the masses.

it's the first Ics update of course there gonna be bugs that's a must for any update all the kinks haven't been worked out yet and if she hates the phone so much now then why not save yourself another 200 and root downgrade unroot it and stop being stubborn and difficult it's not going to kill her

It is the apps that are on there. She has to start from a clean slate. Get Go BackUp, backup just contacts, sms, mms, and call log. Factory Reset. Then reinstall the the apps she wants from the Play Store. This worked for me.
you need update the device to stock FH13.. maybe fixed your issue about battery drain...
Running FH13 with 2 hours on screen time and 60% battery left. I started at about 90% after flashing the update patch from FF18 to FH13.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I saw huge battery improvements flashing fh13. that is if you flashed the kernel and everything.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I dont understand what the issue is..
Solution seems clear...
Download EL26 one-click,
Apply EL26 one-click,
Disable OTA,
Unroot.
Never ever have ICS again,
Done.
