I just upgraded to Blu Kuban ROM, and I want to try a better modem here in Miami.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Try fi27 first. Then its just a gamble. At least with cuban you can pretty much download all ics modems. Although there are still people on el29. Good luck man

Yeah like patrao said its a little like Russian roulette, you just gotta try em and test em to find one that likes your specific device and area. There seems to be some small differences between the hardware radios and towers where even ppl in the same location get widely varying results on the same modems.

thanks guys...a dumb question....how do you test the new modem? look out for dropped calls? speedtests? what do you look for?
I usually use speedtests for data, and in about phone/status check the dbm the lower the better signal u have. Usually -90 to -95dbm is decent -86dbm is perfect and -120dbm is essentially no signal at all.
Edit: for speedtests I use ookla speedtest.net app and FCC test app, I will also tether both USB and wifi and run speedtests on the PC and write down all results and then avg them out for each modem and then go with the one that gives me the best/most consistent results. I usually run my tests over a 24-48hr period per modem, and its best to test from a tw rom so u can update prl and most importantly profile after flashing the new modem.

Did not see any previous treads that mentioned this condition.
Its been going on for a while since I started flashing ICS. Three different builds by different Dev's and I get the same results Slow download speed and CRAZY fast upload speeds, with good 3G and 4G connections, I live in a metro area with tons of anteneas and towers around me. Using control Epic (Wifey's stock Epic) on same networks while running speedtest at the same time on both Epics.
I still get data, but its butt slow while stock Epic just wizzes along with Youtube, play store, Emails, whatever it is concerning data. This time around WiFi is not affected that works fine on both phones, streaming, downloading, both are equal. On on build i had reverse WiFi speeds also, but not this time.
Anyone come across this BUG??? Currently running Calk's E4GT 2 v1.2, FC18 Modem, ICS 4 ICS theme. Great looks fast Rom everything works, (kinda)
Rouge recovery.
When I revert back to stock/rooted EL29 all is normal again. Fast D/L - slow U/L.
Pp.:confused
PS. Second time around with this question.
Common where are those android brains, is this stumping you guys!!!
Give it your best shot, I'll consider any idea or suggestion. Don't just look , post.!!
try changing your modem?
Will try fc22 see how that works. maybe reflash rom too.
did it work?
No. Still the same. Luckely I'm around WiFi most of the time. On FC22 modem. Now.

I'm having the same problem. I'm also in a metro area (NYC). Fast data on stock/gingerbread ROMs. Slow data on any ICS roms. and i mean slooooooow.
I've flashed multiple ROMS, kernals and modems, no avail.
I actually get decent speeds in Manhattan (but not stellar) but in Brooklyn (a mere 12 miles away) i get .10 Mb speeds, no exaggeration. I find it hard to believe that someone is going to tell me that Brooklyn won't have the towers i need for decent data.
Wifi works perfectly on both ICS and GB.
We can't be the only two having this problem. I've googled it and searched the forum but I can't find an answer. Could it be that ICS isn't officially out for the e4gt yet so the ROMs are having flakey service?
Please help, anyone.
On a side note thought, the ROMs that I have tried have no other major issues for me. great job to those who developed them!

They are upgrading the towers in Brooklyn. I received a letter a few days ago.

I know sprint is upgrading the LTE towers but a far as 3g/4g speeds is that the reason also?
Why do gingerbread ROMs work but ICS ROMs do not in BK?

Ive had the same issues. No real giid modems for me either. Ive tried 90 percent of the modems. The one where I get best service is the ff11 modem. Remember to update profile and prl.

So I constantly stay up to date with all the ics modems. My only question is are they really that different? It seems to me no matter which one I have speeds are the same, cell connection is the same does it really matter if I just use one and let it go at that?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
if you see no difference, than why do you keep flashing them?
If you don't see a difference go back or stay doesn't matter. For some the modems are night and day. I stay at fc15 because it works the best so far in my area. The later ones were giving me scratchy calls.

For me, the signal for data up/down improved sometimes, but not consistently enough to say.
But most definitely, without doubt, the GPS was a night and day improvement, after FC18.
Yea I must admit I am not the jump on it because its new type of guy. I mean I was on UnNamed Rom which is EL13 until I flashed Gummy rom, so to me its a what works well for you type of thing. That being said I have only tried 3 of the ICS modems and must admit FC22 got a GPS lock right away. To date its the fastest in that respects so I will stick with it.
I change them in hopes that one will be awesome and my internet goes faster. I don't have 4g in my area. And to everyone else thanks for the input.

My signal strength is jumping around like crazy...from -106dBm then back up to -64dBm...and everything in between, in a matter of seconds. This has been happening since FD24.
I have been using Sfhub's stock rooted nodata roms. I tried the FD02 kernel repack with rougue recovery on FD26 rom & modem, and it seemed to jump around alot less.
Could the kernels be the issue? Or the modem? or the Rom itself?
Update for FF02:
FF02 seems to be better for now...will do some tests later. I had it jump around only once yesterday.
Try throwing your phone at the wall, fixed mine

If it is jumping fro -106 to -64 and back, it is probably scanning because it lost signal. When you first boot your phone, often it exhibits the same scanning behavior.

That's what I figured...and that fact is absolutely murdering my battery life.
You think a data reset will help?
I wouldn't say there is a great chance, but the possibility exists.
The "cleanest" install possible is the following:
1) install Full ODIN OneClick
2) remove external sdcard, if any
3) from android, format internal sdcard
4) from android, perform ##786# reset (providing your MSL, which can be retrieved via "getprop ril.MSL" from terminal or adb shell)
If you format your sdcard, make sure you move your backups to your PC or other external storage.
What does the ##786# reset do exactly?
Rinzler said:

It resets NVRAM as well as your Android user data.
You dial ##786# in the dialer on a stock rom.
It will reset stuff like your phone #, your data login, and other values stored in nvram.
It will cause your phone to perform hands free activation at the next boot, which will populate that information again as well as update profile and prl.
Hands free activation only works on Sprint's native network so don't do it in a place where you can't reliably get signal.

happened to me right after i flashed fe07 modem. i moved back to fd26 to see if its the towers or modem. all seems fine, but i will be keeping an eye over the next day.
FE07 had absolutely abysmal 3G data speeds. It took so long to download the Facebook app update that I immediately flashed an older modem to check against it - FC24 runs like a CHAMP.
I tested fe07 for a day or so. I didn't notice much other than it would drop to 1x often. I ran a speed test 3/4g between fd26 and fe07. Fd26 clearly performed better for me. I went back.
Still rockin EL29 here. All the new modems sofar for me have sukt dik. And YES I let them settle in B4 pulling any test. SOOOO I dont want to hear the BS here, like whatwent on with my other post in a similar topic. Yeah got me sum points taken away..lol..

Lol
I don't discuss modems because for every release 1/3 think it is better, 1/3 think it is worse, and 1/3 think it is the same.
No matter what you say, some people are in violent disagreement.
Just pick what works for you.

I got the "you roamed too much call" yesterday. I don't force roam ever because I'm in FL and force roam doesn't work here with sammy phones.
I was running several of the recent modems last month and used 5GB of data roaming. Almost 100% of my data. Was the first and only month this has ever happened....in 8-9 years. I reverted back to older modem and roaming stopped. This was on top of the fact that I keep wifi on at all tines at home because my house is a dead spot. I also have an air rave (whatever its called).
I only listen to music, email and surf web. Quite surprised by the call.
I explained to rep that I only go to work and home. That for whatever reason home and work are dead zones. Of course he checks and tells me coverage is great in my city. Then he says sprint can boot me, or I can ask to switch for free. Told him I didn't want either. His solution was for me to put setting for roaming sprint only. I asked him how I would use my phone if I only roamed sprint? No answer.
Very frustrating since I wasn't force roaming, have 6 lines and can't afford other carrier and I actually like sprint.
Sent from home How do I turn my phone on?
My phone came with El29, and after seeing loss of signal often I started experimenting with modems. Tried fd19, fd24, fd26, and fe07, and I still get bouts of loss signal. It's not an issue of bad reception, because my OG epic has no signal problems.
Hows the signal on FE10?
I had the Evo 4g for about 1.5 years and it was a great phone. It started having problems so I decided to upgrade to the Samsung S2 on Sprint. Ever since I got it I have low signal most everywhere, can't connect to 4g unless I'm out under open sky, and my phone flips to roaming a lot. I have updated everything but still no fix. I'm rooted but on stock ATM. Please I need some suggestions for fixing this with tweaks or a better rom. Specs below.

Ignore the low signal stuff. Our phone is just really accurate. Nothing wrong with our radios. You'll still be fine if its low signal usually

A lot of times when I am roaming or have really low bars I can't make or receive calls at all. I seem to remember having similar problems with a Samsung device on T-Mobile. Is the hardware side of Samsung's weaker than HTC? If it was just low signal but I could still use the device as a phone I wouldn't care, but it is just an expensive toy a decent portion of my day as it is right now.
Try clearing your nvram and reactivating.

Part of my point in all this is that I am in an area that has good Sprint coverage, the only difference between my usage is the phone. I was consistently on 4G with my Evo now I very rarely can connect or stay connected, I always had cell service on my Evo, now lots of dropped calls and static and unable to send/recieve texts unless under open sky.

Your best bet might be to try a bunch of different modems. [modems here = radios on other devices like HTC]
You'll have to root and add CWM to flash them. Modems are build 'independant'. Meaing you could be on EL29 and use an FG20 modem if you'd like. By far the best reception (both 3g an 4g) has been on the FG20.
If you want to keep your phone on EL29 stock use sfhub's 'Autoroot' and add EL29+CWM-Rogue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Hit up the 'Modem repository by rwilco12 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
After each modem flash I suggest updating the PRL and Profile too.
Find one that gives you the best signal for your area.
There are also '3g/4g speed tweak' posts in this forum That will work on GB and ICS builds.
Good luck.

You would think they would've mellowed this out of the all the phones by now, but you may be experiencing the infamous Loss of Service (LOS) issue this phone wrought when it was first released.

You can either use odin or a dialer code + your MSL.
There are new PRL out and I get a better signal now and better 3g speeds. Update prl and profile first. Next try different modems, I like FE22
Thank you everyone. I just updated the PRL and Profile again. I'll see if that makes any difference and if not I will start running through the modems. If I find something that works I'll post back.
i tried different modems and i found the number one for my galaxy s3 that is L10VPBLIF,,so for 3g is very fast and keep my signal vey strenght ,,,what about u?....
The optimal modem will be different from person to person based on location. LIF might be best for you, but it might not be as good as LIH(for example) for someone somewhere else.
I personally don't notice enough of a difference to care, I try to download large things on wifi anyways, because it always seems faster than 4g
It's mostly placebo anyways.

I can tell you with CQI, RSRP, and RSRQ numbers to back it up that LIx basebands are better than LJ7 for LTE. Why Sprint went with whatever they did in LJ7, while being FAR better than ICS basebands, disappointed me. I know this because I have mapped 63,839 data points in Sensorly in the past month for a realistic LTE coverage map versus Sprint's flat-out lies they show on their own map.
Mutiny,
Do you publish that information anywhere? I'd like to see what you've mapped in KC.

I have been trying a variety of ROMs and Modem. For instance, tried the LJ7 modem yesterday and that just didn't work. I couldn't get a decent data connection on 3G or 4G. Then I went back to the LI3, which I had been using for a while and I had a great 4G connection for a while. Then it dropped out and no matter what I have done thus far I can't get it back, even when I step outside where I can usually get a signal. I mentioned to someone yesterday it's like the Sprint LTE service is operating like a rotating airport light (the green and white lights that I recall from my youth I watched race across the night sky). The beam of service sweeps by and you get it for a flash. I'm really missing the consistency of WiMax on my EVO.
I have been a Sprint customer since late 1997 and to date I can't recall a more frustrating episode with a system roll-out.
I ran across this DSLReports article too and thought it was interesting. http: // goo.gl / ntXCC
Thanks for your post and if you share your research count me among the highly interested.
